In case you missed it, during friday's 1up yours podcast the fellas all mentioned Oblivion for a ps3 launch, not a "do you think it's coming" but a yeah, oblivion is supposed to be a launch title.

It's not a secret launch title, but just a game we haven't heard about before?
So it's probably not a third party title, or else we would have heard about it from the developer.
My guess, either wipeout or twisted metal.

Now regardless of what the game is.......the question is....IS IT A GAME THAT IS WORTH PLUNKING DOWN $ 600.00 FOR???

Because lets be honest....as intriguing as RESISTANCE: FALL OF MAN looks and that old school love of WARHAWK.....the PS3 Launch lineup really needs something to make those people on the fence take notice.

Even as an early adopter......I'm finding it hard to justify not hawking one of the PS3s I'll pickup on Ebay to some uber-fanboy who doesn't even own an HDTV.

I can already see the PS3 being this year's iPOD....i.e. people will rush out to get the PS3 DELUXE pack...and not even have a 1080P set or not even be a movie buff who needs BLU-RAY (much like the tons of people running out to get iPODs...and not even having a single MP3 file to put on it and not having a clue how to put one on it anyway).

Hell if I care, that's the issue with Guitar Hero II on the demo disc. Anything PS3 related is superfluous at best.

But just for the record, I'd like to wish for a ZOE 3 as well. I'm pretty sure that could coerce me to finally spring for an HDTV set of some kind.

it doesn't really matter how on the fence the mainstream is about the PS3 considering that, out of a userbase of over 100 million, i'm pretty sure there will be 500,000 hardcore Sony fans that will gobble those units up come November 11th and 17th.

if anything, the fence riders will have to wait until late 2007, or even 2008 in order to snag a PS3 if they truly, truly must have one.

also, you'd be amazed at what type of game it takes for someone to justify the purchase of a console.

take my X Box, for example. there was one game, above all others available for it that made me decide, "that's it, i'm getting an X Box."

can you guess which one i'm talking about? no.

Halo? nope.

it was Fable. i had no interest in an X Box at all until i heard about Fable. i bought the game, beat it within a few hours, and was incredibly dissappointed. all in all, it's a pretty mediocre RPG, and i knew it wouldn't live up to it's hype, but i felt it justified me purchasing an X Box.

between Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, Untold Legends, Virtua Fighter 5, MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Heavenly Sword, Naughty Dog's Untitled Project, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, and Shadow of the Colossus (to name a few), i have all the justification i need to buy into a Playstation 3 purchase, whether it be this year or next, or the year after that.

there were 40 million gamers that started their gaming life with the Playstation 1 (prior to the PS1's 100 million units sold, the SNES had sold, total, 60 million units. Sony grew the market by 40 million by the end of the PS1's life cycle, and into the PS2's). those 40 million people haven't forgotten the feeling they got when that zombie dog burst through the window in Resident Evil. or facing down that T-Rex in Tomb Raider. or the heartache of seeing Sephiroth spear Aeris in Final Fantasy VII. or battling Liquid Snake atop a demolished Metal Gear Rex in Metal Gear Solid. those weren't Nintendo or Sega or Microsoft moments. those were Playstation moments.

those sorts of experiences bond you to a particular brand (much like how after playing Chrono Trigger on the SNES, and Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES, i knew Nintendo was the one for me; at least until i got my Playstation). despite the $500/$600 price for the PS3, it's fans remember those moments i noted above, and they haven't forgotten them. for the chance to experience something like that again, they see the price as being more than worth it.

"We're just wondering how OPM is supposed to oversee the review of the game when their Managing Editor already said she's not buying a PlayStation 3?"

Being Official, I'm sure their offices get sent PS3 test kits. Many magazines have development test kits so that they can play game code that's not quite gold yet, but is close enough to be reviewed. The only way that this can happen is if the magazines and websites have hardware that will allow them to play non-retail discs (read: DVD-Rs).

Well said. I think that it is for this same reason that many people will also give their money away to Nintendo. Nostalgia is a strange beast! I will always remember my first gaming moments on first console. *cough* Atari 2600 *cough*

In other words, Sony is up to their little bag of tricks promising you the world and then giving you the finger when you expect to geet it. And anyways how big of a deal can this be truthfully? Its not going to make a diference any time soon, given all the production problems that $ONY has.

Oh, how clever. I see M$ isn't the only company whose fiducary lust has earned it the right to have the letter "S" replaced with the dollar sign in its name. Should someone alert the presses? This seems as if it would be rather noteworthy news.

...

I've heard compelling polemics both for and against the dominance of the PS3 this generation, so by this point I've become rather dismissive of them all in general. (Despite how well written they are, unfortunately) It's quite difficult to read a market as potentially volatile as the gaming industry as nostalgia, while a strong force, isn't necessarily delegated to the experience of one console in an age of diminishing exclusives. It certainly doesn't help that there are certainly fewer anthemic franchises in our current marketplace than perhaps we were privy to in the "golden age" of 16-bit gaming either.

From my personal perspective, it ultimately doesn't matter if the PS3 maintains, exceeds or slides from their current stranglehold on the console market as I'll inevitably purchase the console either way. However, I don't have a problem waiting until the console drops to a more reasonable (my subjective opinion of "reasonable") price either. These are video game consoles, not essential amenities. No seriously.

It's got to be twisted metal. Twisted Metal Black launched 9 months after PS2 launched, Twisted metal: Head on was a launch title for the PSP, and there were plenty on the PS1. The PS3 has to be getting a twisted metal title early on, because all the ones in the franchise have basically gone greatest hits. It's a game that will sell and add to the game library.

It's probably NOT going to be some completely unknown game, because if nobody has heard about it, nobody will really care to shell out the money to try something they know nothing about. It's probably something you know of, but don't exactly know. With twisted metal, they don't really need to hype it because you already know basically what it is. Just show a few screenshots and a video or two and sold.

"If that wasn't mysterious enough, the OPM folks have given us one final clue to chew on... the unknown and unannounced launch game's title is five words long"

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969. Sony isn't worried about losing GTA IV exclusivity because they've got this. Doesn't anyone remember there was a 4th city to GTA 1 (as an expansion pack)? GTA 1 = 2D versions of Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas, and London 1969.

In response to # 13:

I agree that there are individuals who will buy the system with no games whatsoever at launch.

But lets be honest....this time around....looking at the long run....its not going to be a cakewalk for PS3.....600$ is still 600$. BLU-RAY or not....because the jump from DVD to BLU-RAY is not the jump from VHS to DVD. Johnny Six-Pack IMO could care less about BLU-RAY which I think irks alot people as SONY is definitely pushing a format down the consumers throat.

There has been only ONE system that was a success that sold for more than $500.00 (and that's in a cost adjusted price)....and it's the grandaddy system that EVERYONE owned and had almost the entire market unto itself....the Atari 2600.

I own every game systems ever made and tend to be the maven on technology to friends and family....so when asked "Is the PS3 worth 600??"...I've found very few reasons to justify a PS3 purchase to a mainstream or casual user over a 360 or Wii right now.

Granted this changes when the you factor in killer apps of MGS 4 and FFXIII come into the picture.....but those are a year....very possibly 2 years away....

PS3 needs a demonstrable launch game demo (like CoD 2 did for XBOX 360 last year) that says BUY ME instead of a 360 or a Wii!

Going against GEARS OF WAR on 360, the functionality of XBOX LIVE, the Wii's Unique Controller and Nintendo's Stable of Star Properties...... I don't see a game in the launch window that can do that.

I guess it's a good thing that the PS3 is 99% backwards compatible.

Well put #21, intellectualdiot

I have to admit I have not seen anyone other than myself to use $ for Sony and I did borrow it from M$. I was trying to make a point that Sony much like Microsoft or Nintendo is trying to make the most money possible from the consumers, But unlike MS or Nintendo, Sony is trying to do so with a arrogant attitude. As I'm assuming you are very familiar with comments that Sony has made about selling systems with no games. But in addition to this Sony is gambling that their propiertary technology will pay off in the long haul, i.e. UMD, Blue Ray.

I will also admit that I am an xbox 360 fanboy, one that acknoledges and understands that competion is good for all those involved in the game making industry. So do I want to see Sony fail completely, the answer is no. Without competion one risks game development becoming stagnant. If one fails to understand this simple concept he/she is a fool.

What I do not like, which may suprise you is Sony delaying the launch in some countries or the slow production that will fail to meet demand this holiday season, I will tell you this, a company who doesnt listen to its consumers or developers will ultimately fail i,e. Sega.( Sega guilty of the later) I just feel that Sony has failed to meet many of its promises to its consumers. If any of you Sony fanboys wish to attack me, do it , but do it on the merits that are legit and well founded, and not those of a blind fanboy who cant see past the propaganda.

I can hear it now everyone after me "who cares that's an old game anyway". Man the PS3 is going to have the best launch line ever every genre has a game. Coupled with the fact that the PS3 version looks sad to say times better than the XBOX 360 version. The damn system isn't even out yet and the XBOX is already looking old. Free online two confirmed 1080p games for launch, should I talk about Unreal Tournament 2007??? Nah what's the use run amok fanboys.
