"43. "When ps3 hits the stores there will be 1.2 million players in peoples homes before the end of the year"

Bwaaahahahahahaha. That'll be a neat trick considering that they're only shipping 500,000 this years."

I didnt make this number up.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/sony-1mln-to-1-2mln-ps3s-for-north-america-in-06/

"Thats assuming Sony can sell the units it produces. People seem to take it as a given that the PS3 would sell out of however many units they produced"

Well obviously. Since the ps3 will be this years "tickle me elmo" And people are flipping out over the shortages, I went out on a limb and just figured that all systems shipped will be sold....lol... my bad

"it's like having choice! only, they choose it for you!"

Yea dsub, that article isnt biased at all.

My favorite part was in the "Most of the movie studios support blu-ray, but we can live without their movies! And if they want our money they will move to our side!"

I don't know if the numbers are right or not, but if there are only 50k hd-dvd players in consumers hands at the moment, come november, there will be 500k blu-ray playing ps3s in peoples hands. That number will only rise. And if you say people that buy a ps3 will not buy blue-ray, think about who are buying these first 500k ps3, probably not the people that don't already have a hdtv.

And the betamax issue is dumb. Sony lost betamax vs vhs for several reasons. They aren't repeating those mistakes with blu-ray, and they have a HUGE studio backing. Whether or not HD-DVD is better than Blu-ray or cheaper right now is not going to decide the war. In 1-2 years time the price of both (if they are still warring) will drop considerably, then it will come down to studio backing.

Just as with opinions on the internet, the ones that win have the majority support, whether they are right ones or not.

The PS3 has 256 MB of graphics RAM.
360 has 512 MB of unified RAM.
If anything, the 360 has more potential for detailed textures/polygons.
The PS3 will have to compress data in order to reduce loading times and to fit enough texture/polygon data into its limited graphics memory.

"15. If Universal came over to the blu ray camp, that will be the end of the format war. blu ray would have officially won."

Think about this for a second. Like any of the other companies, Universal wants to choose the winning side of the format war. If your conjecture was correct and Universal could really guarantee success by backing Blu-ray instead of HD-DVD, it undoubtedly would do so in a heartbeat. Since it hasn't, the issue probably isn't as black and white as you think.

to 57:

the PS1 and PS2 have both sold 100 million units in the past 11 years (the PS1 in 10 years, the PS2 in 6). the X Box has sold 25 million units total.

i think it's safe to assume that out of 100 million Playstation owners (potentially "Playstation fans"), Sony can manage to produce 1.2 million that will buy one this year, or whenever 1.2 million units will become available.

the PS1 and PS2 also sold 10 million units within a year of launch. no other console in gaming history (even the NES and SNES), sold 10 million (though i believe the SNES might have come close. i'm not sure though).

the Playstation brand is synonymous with gaming, pure and simple (i know Nintendo fans bristle when someone says that, but it's true. having played games since 1985, i saw first hand when it went from Nintendo being synonymous with gaming, to Playstation). Sony also has higher consumer trust than say, Microsoft, in the eyes of the mainstream consumer (and possibly casual gamer), as outside of faulty PS2s, the other products that Sony makes are generally high quality (anything produced in such massive quantities is bound to have defects in a small percentage of them. hell, the brand new, only 7 miles when i bought it Chevy Cavalier needed to be maintanenced a year to the day due to a faulty cylinder, and will need an entirely new engine. thank god i'm still under warranty).

anyway, my point is simply that the Playstation Brands userbase is so hard, it's not out of the question to assume that, between the US and Japan, 500,000 gamers will purchase one this year.

for me personally, next year is the year in which the PS3's mettle will be tested. by the end of 2007, PS3s will be more than available for those outside of the hardcore gamer, and if the system isn't pushing close to 10 million (or numbers comparable or better than what the 360 is doing), i'd be worried about the PS3's future. luckily for Sony, they have two Final Fantasies and a Metal Gear Solid title to push unit sales.

also, am i the only person that doesn't think the PS3's launch lineup (what's released so far) doesn't suck?

i mean, between Resistance: Fall of Man, Warhawk, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and possibly Lair, i'm going to be one satisfied customer. having played Warhawk, Resistance and Untold Legends at E3 this year, i know at least 3 of those 6 titles are a lot of fun, and will tide me over plenty until next February and March, when Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, and Stranglehold come out.

i just don't see what all the fuss is about over the net. the people that don't want to pay $500/$600 for a PS3 simply don't have to buy one. there are alternatives. for those that like what the PS3 can do, they'll purchase one with no hesitation (well, maybe a little). Sony may not personally be offering a choice for consumers, but that doesn't mean that there aren't other choices out there (ie, the X Box 360 for a comparable experience, and the Wii to satisfy the gamer who wants to try something different).

for me, all 3 systems offer something unique and interesting, and i'm going to own them all at some point (some before others, of course). i don't see the need to bitch and whine daily on the internet about things that will eventually change (like console cost)
