Peter Moore's out-of-context soundbites aren't really the issue. The real issue is that his idea of the perfect Xbox 360 consumer is a hardcore gamer. All of his comments taken on balance indicate that, from the HDTV to the young male demographic that he specifically mentions. He's not even making an attempt at reaching out to women or other non-gamers.

And that's why the Xbox 360 will be stuck in third place this time around. MS is not even *trying* to broaden the demographic beyond what was attracted to the original Xbox. They originally said they were, but now they seem to be completely 100% admitting in public that, well, no, they aren't. This is actually pretty shocking, IMO.

I think this is better news for the PS3 than the Wii, though. The Wii is not really mass-market at $250 plus the cost of extra controllers (which are required to use the system the way Nintendo wants us to)... neither are the PS3 and Xbox 360, but the point is when all is said and done, all three of these systems are hardcore systems at this point that appeal to their base of fanboys and that's pretty much it. There's no built in advantage for Nintendo there, just sheerly because of the price issue.

As for MS, they're now basically ceding the non-gamer market. Which basically leaves Sony and Nintendo to fight it out, and Sony's got the advantages of better third-party support and Blu-Ray. Assuming they can get the price of the system down fast enough (and let's face it - they're the ones that set their own pricing, so they could make it $200 tomorrow if they felt like eating the loss), Sony's going to have more games for the PS3 *and* they will have the cheapest Blu-Ray player out there. That's going to do more to broaden the market than a motion-sensing controller ever will.

Anyway, to stay on the topic at hand, does Peter Moore even have any idea what he's saying half the time? Is Bill G paying attention?

"A socialite is a person (male or female, but more often used for a woman) of social prominence who is considered to be an influential social figure. "

@Woody

This is the correct Dictionary definition, yes.

But "Socialite" also as an implied connotation of one that feels that are better or superior to their peers.

In this sense, I think Peter fits the bill perfectly.

@epobirs

yes...I read the interview....painfull as it was.

My comment about Indians not laughing or being amused was in direct response to Kip Beatty who implied his comments are merely teasing.

I do not believe, as I said before, that even IF (IF IF IF) this was really "teasing" that it is an appropriate way to tease in lew of their impending Indian release date.

I never once implied that improving the Indian economy was, in any way, the responbility of MS. I'm a capitolist through and through.

Public figures, however, MUST be aware at all times how their words can be interpreted. If you don't believe me.......ask the pope.

My, my Epobirs...I'm surprised we got this much of a rise out of you since most of these comments are much more of opinion in nature.

Actually in this instance, I don't think I'm being childish in feeling a little dissed by Peter Moore's comments. It cut to the heart of something I feel very passionate about; that video games should be something anyone can enjoy. I did bother to read the article in its full context, but I felt his statement disenfranchised me as a consumer. Perhaps if he qualified his statement a little better, I wouldn't have felt so distanced, but all I could think of when I read it was: 'Well I guess Microsoft doesn't want my business'. Of course, I'll be the first to admit that since I grew up working in the PC market, I've had a shaky relationship with Microsoft, but I would have taken offense if any of the three console makers gave me that kind of line. I understand that from a business point-of-view, his target audience is his best customer, but from a client service point-of-view (which I've worked in for years), and a marketing one, you never want any client to feel they worse than another or that you don't want their business. It's a cardinal rule that someone in Mr. Moore's position should know.

As for the food thing...I think it's a little more of a public perception issue. I think the same reaction would have occurred if they were discussing an Ethiopian launch. It's not that we don't know there are people starving in other third-world countries, or that we don't have poverty here in the states, however some countries have a much large public perception that poverty and starvation is a wide-spread problem. I have friends from India who travel there regularly and I was corrected just recently that for all the media talk that things are improving, the poverty issue is still about the same it's been for years.

I probably would have made the same mistake as Moore did. It's one of those things where I'm sure he didn't realize it could be perceived as 'un-PC', however that does not mean that either myself or Peter Moore is above criticism for the comment. I have to apologize for saying something wrong all the time. Intent does not completely excuse offense.

To #15 maximus, you are assuming that all the PS3 owners will buy Blu-Ray movies. It's possible but I am sure most of the PS3 adopters are gamers. ALso I think it is too early for studio exec to pick sides (as most of them at this moment support both formats) when the movie library of either format haven't passed 100 mark, compared to hundreds of thousands possibly for DVD.

[q[My goodness, some people have no sense of humor. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Peter Moore understands that it is very unlikely anyone would prefer starvation to standard def television. I guess he didn't take into account Joystiq readers and their inability to discern hyperbole[/q]

So Kuturagi's "get a second job" tongue-in-cheek comment was just humor? I agree, so now all you MS haters can eat a...BK stacker!!(what did you think i was going to say?? I dont hate on you guys that much)

Anyhow now whos "copying" who MS?? Again all those arguments about Sony "copying" MS are just thrown out the window:)

I will certainly be enjoying my WiiStation3 combo this christmas, can't wait for Zelda, Resistance and later Heavely Sword, Mario, Metroid!!!

I'll wait until one format wins, or what's more likely, we have dual format players that are a shitload better that some cheap version in a console.

I do see what Peter Moore might be getting at. A new controller for the Wii sounds really exciting and cool (BTW, I'm a a Nintendo Fan and have preordered my Wii) but if it's too weird to play with or too tiring, it might end up turning people off, especially from games that they play for long periods at a time, like Zelda, Mario or Metroid, not things like Wii Sports.

Guess time will tell!
