It's finally happened: the calm before the storm. With the Tokyo Game Show closer than ever before (as if it would actually get farther away...), news across this interweb has slowly ground to a halt. Sure, there are always unfounded rumors to explore, but let's not tread in those waters for now. Let's have a discussion. We've all been preparing for the onslaught of next-gen consoles and games, so let's take a few moments to pay our respects to the past. Namely, let's think about the basic genres and let each other know our favorites. This moderately intrepid reporter will give everyone else the sort of outline to go by. If you've never dabbled in a certain genre, no worries.
- Action - probably the original Devil May Cry.
- Adventure - often lumped with action... but, let's say Fatal Frame 2 (survival-horror... no, no. It's an adventure game. Just a scary one.)
- Platformer - Don't play many platformers... so we might pass over this one... unless we count Prince of Persia. Lots of climbing and stuff. Any of them, really.
- Role-Playing Game - This is my most difficult decision. But... the title goes to the game that got me into the genre: Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium on the Sega Genesis. If you never played it, but love RPGs, emulate it. It's fantastic.
- Shooter: Goldeneye. Why? Because it was the first FPS for the consoles I ever owned (other than Turok, but... ugh). Plus, it was fun blowing stuff up through your watch.
- Racing: Don't own many racing/driving titles. I suppose it goes to Gran Turismo 3.
- Sports: Mega Man Soccer! Don't knock it until you've tried it!
- Party: This is sort of redundant, but this is the game you break out whenever you've got company. It's Super Smash Bros. Melee by far.
- Strategy: Either Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre.
