Tokyo Game Show videos aplenty [update 1]

Videos have started hitting the net from the Tokyo Game Show 2006, and they're already impressing us. It's nice to see so many new RPGs coming out. Here are some of the best for your viewing pleasure.
Lost Odyssey gameplay -- to quote Keanu Reeves, "Whoa." FMV RPG? OMG! FTW!
Blue Dragon gameplay -- this is entirely drool-worthy. Imagine Akira Toriyama characters getting swept up in a Miyazaki epic.
Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dreams trailer -- looks beautiful, but we need a Japanese translator to know what's going on.
Lost Planet trailer -- a mech that transforms into a super high-tech snowmobile thing? Woot.
God Hand gameplay -- a spanking good time was had by all, except maybe the women getting spanked in this clip.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 trailer -- more beach volleyball, women in bikinis, and plenty of bounce. Next-generation bounce. In the ball. Duh.
Xbox 360 HD-DVD demonstration -- it may not sound that sexy, but it sure looks it.

Lost Planet, Lost Odyssey... why's everybody getting lost all of a sudden?
taliesin-nine @ Sep 20th 2006 8:41PM
Lost Planet looks fun and stylish... as does the Xbox360 hd demo, I wanna play that!
Nate @ Sep 20th 2006 8:44PM
we need more orgional FPS' like lost planet, theres to many halos and dooms and quakes
bluebren @ Sep 20th 2006 8:46PM
O___O TRUSTY BELL
*whine* But I don't WANNA buy a 360~ :c
dsub @ Sep 20th 2006 8:48PM
Nate-
Lost Planet is a third person shooter. Not a first person shooter.
GameAddict @ Sep 20th 2006 8:48PM
Sony can't catch up.
Cage @ Sep 20th 2006 8:49PM
"we need more orgional FPS' like lost planet, theres to many halos and dooms and quakes"
Not every game with a gun is considered an FPS. That is a third person shooter.
Anyway, the Japanese gamers cant complain about "not having games we like" as I'm really not interested in the RPG games but those seem to be the games loved over there. We will see if its just Japans loyalty to their homegrown game companies or whether they really do like varieties of games.
rockintom99 @ Sep 20th 2006 8:50PM
Damn, this freaking sucks. I was totally pumped for the Wii. I was totally over the lack of omgwtfamazing graphics. I had decided...
Curse you Microsoft! Maybe I *will* go the Wii60 route... Damn it.
CJC @ Sep 20th 2006 8:52PM
Oh man, that's a lot of XBOX360 RPG goodness. I'm most certainly going to need to buy one now.
Dr.Swiss @ Sep 20th 2006 9:04PM
For some reason GameVideo's videos never want to give any sound, which is strange since it's embedded in flash. I could play these fine but they never have any sounds. I could then jump to say google video or youtube and those work fine.
Anyways, they look awsome. I'll be getting a Wii come this November but I can totally see myself a 360 owner sometime next year as well.
Lou @ Sep 20th 2006 9:04PM
dang lost planet looks good. is it comming out on ps3?
rockintom99 @ Sep 20th 2006 9:11PM
Dr.Swiss: I get that problem too, but there is a very easy answer: change the volume slider.
Cody S. @ Sep 20th 2006 9:12PM
360 is finally getting some JRPG love. Surely this will appeal to a much broader audience.
bm @ Sep 20th 2006 9:15PM
I literally lol'd at the DOAX video.
MarxMarvelous37 @ Sep 20th 2006 9:16PM
Dang, I think I just got sold on HD-DVD...
nootau @ Sep 20th 2006 9:17PM
Just so people can start understanding. FPS and Third Person shooters are just about the same (at least on the Xbox 360). Take GRAW. You can pick first person or third person views.Gears of War is another example of a FPS with the camera choice as third person. If you want to call them third person, pesudo-third person would be a better term. Lost planet is one of the few that is trying to go for a "real" third person shooter....SOCOM is an example for the PS2.
A REAL third person shooter would be something like the PSP version of KillZone or The old PS2 versions of Contra (when you were overhead).
nootau @ Sep 20th 2006 9:18PM
SOCOM is an example of a psuedo-third person shooter on the PS2....i couldnt go back and edit lol
Jason W @ Sep 20th 2006 9:38PM
IM not into RPGs at all. None of these games impress me much. Im more into Gears and Halo 3.
Me @ Sep 20th 2006 9:41PM
The one thing xbox will never have is FF...except for FFXI, but thats another story !!! So these other rpg's wont really matter !!!
AndrewNeo @ Sep 20th 2006 9:42PM
You should have quoted Keanu Reeves as saying "OMG! FTW!" instead.
Derick @ Sep 20th 2006 9:57PM
Um...Isn't aren't the first and last videos the same trailer for Lost Odyssey?
bm @ Sep 20th 2006 10:03PM
"Dang, I think I just got sold on HD-DVD..."
Over a 320x245 web video? ROFL!
Ndric @ Sep 20th 2006 10:23PM
They look nice, but some looks like they can get very repetitive.
Dr.Swiss @ Sep 20th 2006 10:26PM
@ rockintom99
Very funny, but I don't have to. By default, the volume bar in the GameVideo trailers are set in the middle. No volume adjustment required.
fahmi @ Sep 20th 2006 10:27PM
why still people hasn't mentioned god hand yet?
oh my god, that game sucks ass.. it doesnt deserve coverage. and perhaps, TGS should ban that company from promoting their products again based on that sh***y game. oh my god.
idioteraser @ Sep 20th 2006 10:43PM
Dead or Alive Extreme whatever 2 isn't even pretending to be a vollyball game like the first one was.
It's some of Itagkai's masturbatory fantasies broadcasted to as a videogame!

So when are these videos going up on the Xbox Live Marketplace? Watching squirming postage stamps compressed to hell and back is just peachy and all, but I'd like to see them in 720p! So far, there's the Tenchu video and HL2 video on the US Marketplace and also the DOAX2 video on the Japanese marketplace (thanks a ton to whoever mentioned earlier today you can get access to the Japanese content with a Japan-based Passport account!).
Pag @ Sep 20th 2006 10:59PM
Dr.Swiss, I used to have the same problem as you. Even though the volume slider is in the middle, I didn't get any sound. But if I'd move it, sound would come back -- it's some weird bug, I guess. He didn't mean to increase it from 0, but just move the volume slider a bit to get around the bug.

Yes lets just play the exact same rpg for 80,000 versions. I'm personally very happy to see some new Japanese IPs come out. FF continues to just prettier and get less fun with every sequel.
Eggman @ Sep 20th 2006 11:06PM
Wow, I was expecting sony and nintendo to put on good shows at TGS but totally didn't c that coming from msft. Some really sweet shit there. Sony has their work cut out for them, not only do they need to WOW us... they REEAAAALLLLYYYY need to WOW us.
This is sonys last chance to justify to a LOT of gamers out there, $600 buys them more than the 360... or even as much at this point would help their cause. With 1080p support announced earlier and the OPTION of an HD movie format, sonys fighting an even steeper up-hill battle.
Jonn @ Sep 21st 2006 12:15AM
RE Lost Odyssey:
1. Wait, so we finally get to play those cutscences from FFVII?
2. Did he just *slice fire*?!?
3. So that's what happened to Meteor.
RE Lost Planet:
Shouldn't the tempature be spiking when something explodes? And that's awfully light clothing for hundreds of degrees below.
RE God Hand clip:
I LOL'd when "Level Up" appeared. Really.
RE DOAX2:
I think my fanservice meter just broke.
Infil @ Sep 21st 2006 12:48AM
As much as this looks like it'll have an impact on the Japanese market, I don't really think it'll be the case. Lots more Japanese games need to come out. But this is a nice start, hopefully Xbox will continue to make strides. But I really think it does come down to them wanting to support Sony more than Microsoft. We'll see, though. Interesting games, nonetheless. And it's nice to see Microsoft literally counter every last pro Sony had going for them.

Nintendo doesnt participate in the TGS.

"Over a 320x245 web video? ROFL!"
LOL. Yeah, I should have been more specific. I was referring mostly to the Picture-In-Picture alternate angles and commentary. That's pretty sweet. I have read enough on AVS Forum to know that the actual quality of the picture will be noticeably better on my 90" screen.
Tom @ Sep 21st 2006 2:45AM
ZOMG! I want Trusty Bell and Lost Planet! ahhhh!1!11! The rest look good too, except for God Hand, which appears to suck...
atomicpond @ Sep 21st 2006 3:27AM
As always it's about the games, and as I've been saying for ages the 360 is winning on games which is why I bought one. There are a handful of must haves out right now for this decent priced/powerful system and then you have all that lot above (As well as the other XB exclusives).
And yet people STILL can't see past the Sony hype and just go and pick one of these bad boys up and actually start playing games instead.
Another feather in the Xbox 360's cap!
Psaakyrn @ Sep 21st 2006 3:46AM
My opinions:
Lost Odyssey: Horrid. Simple attacks take WAY too long, and the fighting is way too un-natural: trying to loog realtime when it isn't doesn't work.
Blue Dragon: Interesting, but... a) What's with the 20+ battle options in one screen? b) Is anyone else getting bored of the 20+ second FMV supermoves? c) Does anyone else feel that those moves would play better using motion-controls?
Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dreams: Short, but battles look way better than the previous two.
Lost Planet: Looks good, but I've some doubts that the controller can really handle 3rd/FPS controls that well. We'll see. (vote: best of the videos in this list)
God Hand: Nothing new.
DoAX2: Nothing new.
HD-DvD: Nothing unexpected.
Conclusion: If this is what TGS have to offer, no wonder Nintendo decided to back out. Surely there's better games/videos out there, right?
matjet @ Sep 21st 2006 3:49AM
do NOT compare blue dragon with Miyazaki films. blue dragon looks good, but they are still on different planes of existance.

720p version of all those videos and more :)

"Conclusion: If this is what TGS have to offer, no wonder Nintendo decided to back out. Surely there's better games/videos out there, right?"
Nintendo didn't "back out", they don't participate in TGS.
"do NOT compare blue dragon with Miyazaki films. blue dragon looks good, but they are still on different planes of existance."
VERY eye of the beholder. Hey, there are even those who don't really like any Miyazaki's stuff. People have different opinions. I can see what the author meant.
As for the videos themselves, they've definitely got me interested in Lost Odyssey now. It looks a little dark and colorless (and not cute) for my tastes, but wow, it seemed pretty cool. I was expecting a little more from the battle system...maybe something pseudo-realtime, definitely something more cinematic. I mean, come on, you can jump around and stab people in the head in cinematics, but all you can do in combat is a weak-looking slash? The actual gameplay combat didn't look nearly as brutal and interesting as the FMVs.
Blue Dragon looks fine and all, but not really my thing. When they compared it to Chrono Trigger, I was hoping that by "enemies on the map", it meant that you wouldn't even change to a battle screen. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Looks the most straightforward traditional of the RPGs.
I was already looking forward to Trusty Bell, so seeing a video was a plus. Still excited. They need to work on the synch, though.
Lost Planet looks great and the demo was a blast, but I don't know if I want to shell out cash for it just yet. Probably end up as a bargain bin purchase eventually. Now that my connection finally finished loading the video, I amend this. I HOPE I wait until it's cheaper. It's looking better than ever, and those explosions are still awesome. Multiplayer seems like a blast.
DOAX2 was looking classy as always. No surprises here. I have to admit I'm looking forward to seeing what new minigames/sports it has to offer. If you actually played the first one, you know that it REALLY WAS A VOLLEYBALL GAME...and a fun one at that. People like to talk about it like it was porn or something, when it wasn't in the least.
I'd bother to load up the God Hand video, but the school's connection is so terrible here that it'd probably take at least a half hour to download even the low quality. From what I've seen between the internet and videos playing at stores in DenDen Town, looks pretty funny anyway. Haven't seen enough to give any real critiques or comments.
Alex @ Sep 21st 2006 5:59AM
Dr.Swiss: He's not kidding. Move the volume slider off center and the sound will come. I get the same problem.
rockintom99: Agreed 100%. After seeing these videos, I'm pretty sure I will eventually have to pick up a PS3 or 360 after the Wii to satisfy my inner graphic whore.
maximus @ Sep 21st 2006 8:59AM

Winning against what? If you're considering what console has currently the best RPG games then it's the PS2 by a long long way.
None of those look anything worthy of being a system seller. PS3 has the next Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy as well as new titles from Nippon Ichi and Level 5 making PS3 the best option for RPG fans. If FPS and PC type games are your thing then the 360 will have more to offer.
Zeeman @ Sep 21st 2006 9:50AM
maxiums,
I can make the same argument about the 360. You are forgeting about the Western RPGs, which by the way are getting quite popular and the 360 has lots of them. Combine that with the fact that JRPGs are on the rise on 360 and I can just as easily say that the 360 is the RPG machine..
So to conclude, the 360 is the all around machine.
Good RPGs,
Best FPS,
and all the sports you can handle,
Live.
foobob @ Sep 21st 2006 10:36AM
Lost Odyssey: absolutely stunning! Hironobu Sakaguchi of Final Fantasy fame proving to be a real visionary. I believe the XBox 360 now has a good chance of grasping japanese gamers attention. That, Blue Dragon and the steady releases by Capcom, Tecmo, Sega and a few others.
American gamers used to the likes of Halo and Doom may be turned off by another japanese RPG, but believe me: this is hot and good news to XBox and M$. Not that i'm a M$ fan or even willing for XBox to dominate the market...
mocax @ Sep 21st 2006 10:39AM
I'm a sucker for over-the-top, exaggerated action, unlike boring westerner rpgs like KoTOR and Oblivion.
Lost Odyssey, Lost Planet and Blue Dragon totally sold it for me.
Woody @ Sep 21st 2006 11:00AM
Not a 360 owner, but this is starting to tempt me
Jake @ Sep 21st 2006 2:35PM
Am I the only one that loves JRPGs for the most part but absolutely can't stand turn based systems? It is so farking boring picking attacks.
I am loving Oblivion right now, but I wish their battle system was a bit more complex. Just if it had a more complicated sword fighting system than back off, block, attack, attack.
Here is my dream:
A game like Oblivion in openness, Final Fantasy in story and cutscenes, and has battle based on complex sword mechanics and spell casting like Oblivion on steroids. And I want it called Final Oblivion.
Pent @ Sep 21st 2006 4:44PM
If these are rpgs for the xbox360, holygod, I was totally turned off by their current selection of games when I went to purchase a new console so I ended up not buying it at all, hate that gaylo 1/2 shit considering the pc has better stuff since 4 years ago... and doom 3 on a console?? lmfao
