Whereas Ridge Racer 7 impressed us, Konami's Coded Arms Assault left us writhing in pain. The game was a comedy of errors and should never have been shown. Among the game's many, many technical flaws include:
A jerky frame rate that frequently slowed down when something happened, no matter how small (e.g. reloading your pistol)
Very low polygon count. We're pretty sure we've seen GameCube titles use more horsepower, which is not a good sign for a PS3 game.
Cheap-looking explosions.
Bullets and grenades left paths in the air that can best be described as "a line of sprites."
Horrendous load times (about 43 Mississippis seconds)
Unresponsive camera controls that had only two speeds (stop and spin wildly).
Beyond all that, Coded Arms Assault is just another derivative first-person shooter. It offers nothing to set itself apart from the crowd, including its paltry visuals (shown at 720p, though you'd be hard-pressed to notice). We'd consider this a mediocre PlayStation 2 game, and it's supposed to be next-gen? Tsk, tsk, ...
Here is a video of the demo:
Here are some shots of the Coded Arms Assault booth:
This reminds me of that game Oni (I forget the name) it was a PS2 "launch window" title that was supposed to be so badass with "levels designed by real architects!" In the end it felt like the whole budget went to the real architect.
Point is games are always crappy at launch. I'm excited for Wii because they have at least 2, maybe up to 5 or 6 launch games that look like they will hold their own come a year from now when the Gears of War / MGS4 equivalent of awesome game is released for it.
I hope PS3 has a playable demo of Eight Days because that game looks awesome and I don't really believe the trailer I saw at ebgames was in-game footage (given Sony's track record).
Cone, seems to me that u r a sony fanboy. "The game was a comedy of errors and should never have been shown." joystiq stated that this demo has too many errors, its not even eligable to be called a demo, next time read the whole post.
"This site must be paid off by ms.THE GAME IS 50% DONE YOU MSFANBOY RM."
Tip to developers: Don't show your game to the press if you don't want them to talk about it.
It sounds like some people are used to magazines and IGN or GameSpot who give rosey previews all the time... only to give really low review scores in the end. Teh biased, indeed.
I hate to admit it but I was one of those that really enjoyed the original on the PSP. The video looks like it was made for the PSP not the PS3. Hopefully their decision of making the leap from the PSP to PS3 was not a mistake.
Oh no, the PSP version's controls are putrid and the gameplay is wooden. I literally watched multiplayer matches where people stood in front of each other trying to get the crosshairs lined up right to get a hit with the shotgun. could hit a barn with those controls.
I was never excited about a PS3 version of that dreck. You'd think Konami would know better...
this isn't surprising. a good game like Devil May Cry I have faith in, no matter what problems the current build has. you simply know that Capcom has the ability to pull it together before release, especially given Capcom's recent hot streak (Okami, Dead Rising, Lost Planet even though it's not out yet it's GREAT!)...
on the other hand a bad game like Coded Arms, which has been bad in every conceivable form to this point, is a very peculiar choice for a PS3 title. why would you want to sink millions of dollars into developing a PS3 version of what is undisputably a bad franchise? simply calling it Coded Arms hurts this game. anyone who had the misfortune of playing the first one on PSP or having hands-on time with the PSP sequel at E306 would stay away from this game just because of the name, even if this one did happen to be good.
so why is this newsworthy? it would be like writing a Joystiq post titled "We Ate a Piece of Crap and it Tasted Like Shit"...
Joystiq hates Konami and Coded Arms. See previous E3 snubbing. Can you say SOUR GRAPES? Who knows if the game will really suck on PS3, I just wouldn't take this site's word for it.
Coded Arms 1 on PSP was a totally competent FPS with as adaptable a control scheme as possible on a single analog device. It looked great and had nice quick levels - the game itself just lacked depth and variety. People who hate it either never really tried to play it, or lacked patience to adapt to the controls.
It's funny to see the Nintendophiles bashing the single analog FPS when their previous N64 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark still stand as the highest rated titles to date in this genre.
This is a con to game conventions... Developers have to rush and put "something" out there. I'm sure the games will be better once their polished up a bit.
Anyone notice that at e306, "nintendo was doomed because the wii was a gamecube" but aat tgs06 we must cut sony some slack because the games are not finished...............
"literally watched multiplayer matches where people stood in front of each other trying to get the crosshairs lined up right to get a hit with the shotgun. could hit a barn with those controls."
I believe you maen "couldn't" hit a barn... Meaning the aim was impossible to use in even hitting the largest of objects...
The theory / story behind the game for PSP was interesting, but the actual gameplay was shit. Hopefully this cleans up, because I wanted to play a real game based in that world.
My question is, who expected this to be a good game anyway? It's a below average shooter, with a derivative story, that started life on a handheld, from a company that has never made a great shooter! Move along, nothing to see here. Post more White Knight vids.
For the record, Joystiq slammed the E3 Too Human demo as well. Anyone claiming that Joystiq is MS biased is an idiot. Like many people here, I will say that it's the developer's choice to display an unfinished and buggy game. Don't expect people who actually get to play it to defend it just because *you* want to like it.
I think Too Human will kick ass, but I believe Joystiq if they say the demo sucked.
I don't get it either. Konami could have made a PS3 version of Jackal or Contra. Salamander or Axelay. Hell, I would have taken Legend of the Mystical Ninja on PS3 before Coded Arms. How well does Konami expect this to do in the face of Resistance and Call of Duty?
@ House husband
Agreed! I'm getting the Wii and I'll be the first one to shout when something on it looks like shit, even below what's expected from the hardware (I'm looking at you Farcry) Sony doesn't get a pass especially when you have companies that are showing what the hardware is capable of. Konami should have kept this under wraps until it was proper or just killed it and moved on to something else.
It is very unprofessional for Joystiq's Ross Miller to post such bias garbage. And it's not unprofessional to show a "rough demo" of a game "in development."
"One of the most impressive portions of the unfinished and admittedly very rough demo were the reload and jump animations." - Juan Castro, IGN http://ps3.ign.com/articles/734/734322p1.html
@pixelator "It's funny to see the Nintendophiles bashing the single analog FPS when their previous N64 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark still stand as the highest rated titles to date in this genre."
Dont bring that bull here. You know that nub and the analog stick on the 64 are different.
Hey, I liked Oni. Granted, the final version lacked a few of the promised features (multiplayer deathmatch) and was a bit rough around the edges, but let's remember the game was in mid-development when Bungie got swallowed up by Microsoft and subsequently rushed out the door before all of Bungie's folks got absorbed into the Let's-port-Halo-to-the-XBox collective. I still break it out every now and then to play it, just because it's fun to romp through the levels and do some no-holds-barred butt-kicking.
"We're pretty sure we've seen GameCube titles use more horsepower, which is not a good sign for a PS3 game."
Since when did GameCube become the benchmark for crappy looking games. I seem to remember GameCube cross platform stuff usually looking better than PS2.
Anyway, give the Devs a break on this game. I'm sure everyone working on it is doing their very best. It's hard to have a game in various stages of completion and then have to show it to people.
I read the first couple lines of your post and was like "lol, he is teh joking"
Um, but you werent.
Joystiq hates Konami? Wow, y'know what, you're right. I guess i totally missed all those jabs at MGS and Castlevania that they have been making lately.
Joystiq hates CodedArms? Well...hey so do I and so do most people who have realized what a crappy franchise it is.
Also, you try to make the point that "Nintendophiles" who praise goldeneye, etc despite its sinlge analog control are hypocritical for bashing PSP games with single analog. I would like to make the alternate point that since we "nintendophiles" (and according to your definition a nintendophile is anyone who likes goldeneye and PD64...so...just about everyone) have seen FPSs that kick ass with a single analog, we should be able to expect that other FPSs could do the same. Coded arms doesnt. Its simple comparison.
I know that liking video games is a subjective matter, but, in this case, I will make an exception. Coded Arms is bad. Just horrible. A waste of Konami's time and money.
This is retarded. You're condemning a game that isn't even finished yet? Not only that but on an xbox 360 site, and NOT ONLY THAT but about a console that will be the xbox 360s greatest rival? Lame. Your information is extremely biased, unconclusive due to lack of REAL facts.
Not to mention the rest of you idiotic fanboys are comparing this game to other games that are nothing like this one.
