I don't believe Apple *ever* focused on gaming. It's not on their agenda, and that's fine. I didn't buy a Mac to play games. If your main concern when buying a computer is "Can it play the newest games?" then you're not shopping for a computer- You're shopping for a gaming rig. There's nothing wrong with that, but people need to realize that the Mac's audience is not made up of people who want to have a computer geared toward gaming. We want a computer for work and as a tool.

For my toys- for my gaming- I have consoles dedicated to this task. Apple's attitude is fine. They give me what I want in a computer (sometimes more than what I want, actually) and they give me what I want in a digital music player. I don't need them to be buddy-buddy with game developers as long as they keep making good things that make my tasks easier. This is where Apple excels.

And once again I'll say that the games on the iPod are not meant to compete with the portable gaming market. They are little bonus items for iPod owners. Nobody's going to buy an iPod to play games, and so I fail to see why game designers need to have been mollycoddled by Apple.

This move kind of makes sense. Apple will obviously make more money off their own games, so by limiting the competition, they get more profit.

Sure, this will piss off devs, but I don't think Apple is expecting to sell a lot of games per ipod. If you're not planning on selling a lot, there isn't much of a need for variety and you need to maximize the per sell profit.

I'll ignore the flamebait...
I think Lorben has pretty much nailed it. iPod has no intentions of being a gaming device, and are only offering this as a sort of extra incentive. so for the people who want to play games and own an ipod, they'll have no choice but to pay directly to them; no profit loss to third parties.
Although, i'm not sure if this will hurt them in the long run; it's never a good idea to burn bridges.
