To the right of a long wall of playable PS3 demos (and a few trailers running on PS3s), Sony had on hand two PlayStation 3 units encased in cylindrical glass. Unlike previous viewings, this time Sony showed off what we presume is the final case design for its PS3 games.
The two cases shown were for
Grand Turismo HD and
Heavenly Sword. The
case designs were identical to what IGN reported about a few weeks back. However, both their mockup and
our my speculation were off regarding the outside shell, which is translucent and features only a tiny Blu-ray engraving in the top-left corner of the box.

I really dont get the big deal over the case, no more tacky than the green xbox DVD cases and seriously since when does the size or shape of the box effect purchasing decisions?
Although i do like these boxes better than the bluray, its not like its a defining factor or anything.

They could both be right actualy. If you notice the box art shown here has a japanese rating on it. North America could have the blue, while Japan has the clear. Kind of like Gamecube cases.

I liked the cover-art template... the small playstation 3 bar on the side (even with the sucky spider-man font and the "i'm a cheap toy from China" reflective silver finishing) is actually much better than i'd expect Sony to do...
Cause their design and marketing department has been on animal tranquilizers for a long time now...
But the translucid white case is uglier than a bearded-woman....

FETUS - some people do care about how the case looks. Here's a couple reasons from the top of my head:
1) I don't want to buy something for $60 when it looks like it should cost $6.
2) If this is going to sit in my reasonably attractive media stand next to all of my normal looking DVD, PS2, etc cases, I'd like it to be reasonably good looking itself, rather than like.... that.

Eshk. I like blu ray boxes more myself. I think the Wii cases look junky and odd, these look cheap (clear plastic might be okay, if there wasn't a huge gap at the top of the box), and the bright green cases for X360 are really distasteful.
*shrugs* while it is just a case, it won't alter my decision to buy if I already want it. Shiny new cases do draw in new attention though, which is what it's supposed to do.
That or they know nobody is going to buy games for $80 a pop and are cutting out the middle man, designing the cases so they fit on rental store shelves easily.

I didn't really care for the Blu-Ray mockup shown before, but now I find it a step above these clear cases. They look cheap – like when the video store prints out a scanned cover and slaps it on a generic case for extra copies.
Guess I'd rather have some color on the case, rather than no color at all.

A lot of people seem to have problems with the Wii cover art being "lopsided", the way the "Wii" logo sits only in the upper right corner. Fact is that as awkward as that is it STILL looks better than half-heartedly cramming your system's name and logo into a tiny-ass bar on the left side. The big empty space at the top isn't helping things much either.

The games disc comprises, I estimate, 70% of the material purchaes when buying a game.
Game box art and design are comprable to what album art and design were a few decades ago.
Tell someone that a Beatles album cover only served a utilitarian purpose and you'll most likely have an argument on your hands.

Sorry Will, i must not know anything about advertising or marketing because i figured people bought the game based on what the game is and the brief description on the back, more so than the color or shape of the overall box. As long as it fits on a shelf and doesn't have any sharp angles i think most people could care less what the color of the box is really.
I mean i dont particularly like green, but that doesn't stop me from buying 360 games or xbox games in those gaudy neon green boxes.

I have to say I agree.
I should start with this: I don't like Sony's business practices -- I have had nothing but bad luck with their products -- I will NOT be paying those insane prices for a PS3. BUT...
...they're fecking game cases. You're being fanboys/fangirls by sitting there, whining about how ugly these cases are or how doomed Sony is for using them. Seriously, they may not be the prettiest things in the world, but they're not the ugliest. They do what they set out to do, and that's all Sony needs from them.

If it's small enough to fit in 9GB then it will go on a BD-9 disk. What's BD-9 you ask? It's a 9GB Dual layered, red-laser disk identical to DVD-9 (except they probably add Blu-Ray's crazy DRM so it doesn't technically fit the DVD specs.
That's Blu-ray's dirty little secret. Finalizing BD-9 is actually one of the reasons for Blu-ray's delay to market.
Let's all say it now: BD-9
Because 9GB is plenty for this generation of games.

I think a lot of this arguement is just becuase a lot of the Sony fanboys came over to make stupid comments about Xbox360 and Wii's box art and case. People complained about the huge blu-ray logo at the top, and I think people were expecting better or worse here, just ready to comment on whatever.
It is just a box, and what really matters is the game inside. None the less, Box art and cases are supposed to attract to the eye as a marketing tool. This doesn't say much for the PS3 cases, considering they all look like rental boxes. People just see it as "cheap" becuase it's what rental places use for their cases, and what stores use for used games that have no cases. It's just a cheap look, and although it's just like the PSP, doesn't mean it's really good.
I think most of you are looking to into this, or just looking for an arguement. Truth is, it's still a marketing and advertisment strategy, and for them to slap something together which looks like no thought really went into it, people will say it looks stupid and cheap. It's just how it realistically is, and everyone should expect comments about it.
It's about presentation. What really matters is the goods inside, but the presentation on the outside can make someone say, "Oh wow, This looks sweets" just by looking at the cover. Like a Bra, the goods on the inside is what matters, but a good color and material can make the "show case" just that much more sweet.

OK a few things, i dont hate PS3 or the 360. I am going to get the Wii because you can never go wrong with Nintendo. Eventually i will get a PS3 after the price drops a tad. Now then, The case looks dumb. And with what Sony has been saying about them making no profit on the consoles they need to make the cases and the case art as sexy as possible so people will buy them. I buy games for their quality, but not everyone is the same. I can tell you right now that if they dont make things look a tad better they are in for some trouble.

But if you look at the WII and 360 case its like SUPER COOL for WII and 360 YEA LETS PLAY A GAME but this thing is like i have the best graphics and everything but everything else is boring dont play the game. And the games arent good either
