Joystiq hands-on: Lost Planet multiplayer (Xbox 360)

We start as the blue team in the bottom of an icy valley. As we move uphill, the red team ambushes, lobbing a half dozen grenades toward our group. We disband, and I climb left up a small hill behind the remains of a brick building. As one foe pursue me, I throw a gum grenade onto an adjacent wall. I run away and they pass the remains just as the bomb goes off, knocked down both the brick wall and my assailant.
Practicing with my grappling hook, I scale to the top of a nearby building and jump across the rooftops. Eventually I come upon a sniper rifle. Climbing up an adjacent lookout tower, I sight a lonely gunner from across the map. Locking him in my sights, I fire one shot into his stomach. He dashes left behind a wall, but I can still make out his cowering, tranlucent figure. I fire two shots that don't hurt him but knock down his cover, he continues left and jumps down into a hole. As his head finds its way into my cross hairs, an ill-timed framerate hiccup saved his life. I quickly realize the lag was caused by the giant mech who swiftly blows me away.
I respawn after a few seconds and try to track down my former possessions. Heading right, I stop to dig out a grenade launcher out of the snow. I find and take vengeance upon upon my recent killer. He jumps out of the mech and I take his place, not realizing the folly in my hasty decision. Upon entry, the screen flashes "danger" and I learn that the glorified auto bot has very little health remaining. A grenade lands at my feet as the game lets me know that the blue team has won the round. My last image is of my soldier engulfed in explosions.

It sounds fun, maybe they'll release a demo.
Footlong! @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:08AM
yah, a multiplayer demo would definately seal the deal on anyone, like myself, who is between game purchases. I'm sure it's gonna be a great game, but how do I know its multiplayer will be on par with rainbow six vegas or battliefield bad company.? and i can't imagine capcom hasn't thrown a multiplayer demo together yet. that single player demo came out in what, May?

Flash.
1. Its the only way that you can play console HD games without travelling to the future.
2. Xbox Live
I mean, if you haven't got an xbox360 by now, you either can't afford one or don't like console gaming. There's plenty of good games, of which Lost Planet is certain to be one, the demo from nearly a year ago was great, can't wait to see what it looks like.

This is the main reason why I don't have a XBox 360...All of their really good games end up being shooters. I bought a XBox and had many games but all of the really good ones except for Fable was a shooter games. I am not a big fan of shooters games. It seems that this will be a good game just like many XBox 360 games but still doesnt change the fact that it is a shooter. Just think about all the shooters that have come out or will come out (Gears of War, Perfect Dark Zero, Lost Planet, Halo 3, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty 2, etc..) Xbox 360 is a good gaming console but it needs to diversify a little more to be able to beat Playstation 3.
Kuu2 @ Sep 23rd 2006 10:16AM
Multiplayer sounds like its a killer. I already loved the demo from last year. Can't wait till this game ships.
J.Goodwin @ Sep 23rd 2006 10:18AM
PS3 doesn't have anything that 360 doesn't have until November. March in Europe.
At that point, 360 will still have two important things that PS3 will have in extremely limited quantities:
Games and Online play.

FLASH,
You crack me up. I love un-attended 13 year olds on the internet. They make for such interesting comedy.
As to answer your question. I'll sum it up in one point, as Ben Hobb's already pointed out, but you didn't understand.
1. Can you buy a PS3 right now? No? Then that is the biggest reason to buy a Xbox 360 vs a PS3.
Looking to hear back from you.
striderhayasa @ Sep 23rd 2006 10:40AM
uh...when did Sony show actually gameplay of Heavenly Sword? I've only seen CG.
Personally, I haven't bought an Xbox 360 because the library has too many first person shooters, too many PC ports and not enough quality original content. For $400+ dollars, You have to do better than that.
@ SuperMario 20, I agree with you 100%.
The original Xbox had the same problem which is why mine got sold. Lost Planet looks great though but I'm not convinced that Gears of War is going to be a must have for me. We'll see but as a whole, I'm not convinced that Xbox 360 is the console to own. PS3 is too expensive and it's anyone's guess as to whether it's going to actually work out of the box. Wii is unproven and after looking at some of the screens and ports, developers are still trying to sling their wares for quick cash ins instead of producing quality product. The only game that UBI has shown that looks interesting is Rayman. Red Steel still has issues and everything are just lazy ports.
"sigh" thank goodness for the portables.

1. xbox live
2. the same exact graphics, from what we have seen LO looks better than naything on the PS3 so far.
3. its out now.
4.it also has 1080p.
5.rumble
6.you dont have to buy cars and enemies in games.
7.seemless connection to xp.
8.live anywhere
9.more games
10. and the most important of all is the worst fanboys on this side are not as bad as you.
11. heres a bonus microsoft has never lied about any game when showing a video. if they showed cg its cause we knew damn well. AKA forza 2.
12.oh yea did i mention that we got MORE than what was promised?
Jeremy Wright @ Sep 23rd 2006 10:52AM
Fine, I'll feed the troll.
1. More games: by the time the PS3 comes out, there'll be more than 100 360 games available.
2. Better games: Sure, some of the games in the PS3 launch window look great, but expect that for the first 6-12 months after its release, the 360'll have the better lineup. Who knows after that, but right now both consoles have fairly firm lineups for the next year.
3. Xbox Live: Every game, full integration, always on. Plus it's totally stable. The number of "online" games for the 360 by the time the PS3 launches'll be somewhere between 40-50. The number by the time the PS3 launches'll be somewhere between 5-10.
4. XBLA: Whether you love or hate microtransactions, more than 50 games available for cheap, for your girlfriend / sister / kids / wife / mom is a great little thing. Plus, it's a nice distraction when you reach that "frustration point" in a full game.
5. Rumble: Sure, I said it. I've played the PS3. On racing games the lack of rumble was really noticeable.
6. Price: It's only about 70-100$ more expensive than the Wii. And it's more than 100$ cheaper than the PS3. Controllers are cheaper, many games are cheaper. All in all, you get a great package for an "okay" price.
7. Connectivity: Until you've streamed movies and pictures from your PC or used the 360 as a DVR you really don't understand the full power of the box. You think the PS3's a cheap BR player? I think the 360 is a stupidly cheap DVR.
8. Versatility: Plug in my iPod, it plays my music. Plug in my thumb drive, see my pictures. Plug in a decent number of peripherals. It just works. I can't believe Microsoft made something so easy to use, to be honest.
9. Demos: Nuff said.
10. Upgrades: We already had one dashboard upgrade, which was fairly substantial all in all (as many features as an Apple OS X upgrade). We'll have another very, very soon (likely before the PS3 launch). I'm sure the PS3 "sideboard" (or whatever) will be nice, but it'll also be a fair bit behind the 360.
That said, I'm sure I could come up with 10 reasons why the Wii and PS3 rock as well. The reality is that, to me, each system has its own strengths and weaknesses. If you love the PS3, then buy it. It doesn't make you an idiot or a fanboy. It makes you passionate. And if you have fun *gaming* with your system, then it's a success for you.
Me, I've been gaming with my 360 for 8 months now, and I've loved it. It was more than I'd ever spent on a system before, but it is generations better than my Xbox or PS2.
I can only hope you have the same satisfaction with your PS3. If you do, then we were both right ;-)

Top 10 Reasons to buy a 360:
10) Because I can
9) I think it will be cheaper to run the 360 in winter to heat my place than the heater.
8) I can use the power brick to shore up my walls during a hurricane.
7) Riiiiiidge Raaaaaacer (yeah, it's got one, too)
6) Because the controller works without me having to flop around
5) It's like a pet! It's alive! http://www.360voice.com/blog.asp?tag=Briarios (ok, yeah ... I've actually been playing Baten Kaitos on the GC recently)
4) Buying the 360 is the environmentally proper thing to do ... (yeah, I don't know what this means either)
3) Chicks dig it
2) The trippy music lightshow calms my Hulk-like rage.
and the number one answer
1) To piss Sony off
Honestly, I love my 360 ... I like the ability to download trailers and demos, Dead Rising rocks, Oblivion is excellent, I'm one of those weirdos that is really enjoying N3. I'm looking forward to the Wii ... and the PS3 -- when it's affordable.

360 vs PS3
1.Launched with a faulty hardware. Charged customers big backs you get them repaired.
2.Huge, bulky, everything external.
3.Same price/more than a PS3, after buying a HD-DVD and xboxlive, and yet the ps3 is more refined, future proof, and everything's fit in the same box with silence and no heat.
4. The best games to date are COD2,GRAW, and Oblivion. Ps3 will have Cod3,DMC4, Heavily Sword, Resistance, White Knight Story, Oblivion, etc. They all will look good at launch/better than the 360's launch games/and the same if not better than 360 year later games. And given the fact that they have more space for games, games what have 2 hour game play like Tomb Raider. lol.
5. Halo 3? All hype no deliver. Halo 1 and 2 are horrible and are nothing unless you entertain yourself play Multiplayer mode for an hour.
6. No region coding. Meaning we can import all those yummy Remix, Japanese only RPG, etc games.
So if you want to support a monopolizing company, with bad hardware, and crappy games, by all means.
jojo29 @ Sep 23rd 2006 11:26AM
@Flash, SHADDUP!!! I'm ashamed that your a sony fanboi, as i myself love the Playstation brand BUT not to the point of being a douchebag like yourself.
Right now the 360 saddens me. Everyone is talking about how the Ps3's "launch" is "mediocre". Ok lets recap. What did the 360 have at launch. Hmmm Call of Duty 2 was their best game BUT i could get it on the PC!!
Jay @ Sep 23rd 2006 11:34AM
I don't think you should speak about faulty hardware until Sony releases the PS3. The defect rates were way higher for the original Playstation and PS2 as compared to the 360. I managed a video game store (Funcoland ... anyone remember those?) at the time -- we had defective units stacked to the roof!
Sony is known for beta testing their consoles by selling them ...
Ben Hobbs @ Sep 23rd 2006 11:57AM
I'm always amazed that people can get so excited about a cable, HDMI is just a cable - it doesn't always look better, isn't necessary for 1080p etc... Just today I switched over a customers DVD Player to Component because it looked better than the HDMI picture did.
As for region coding, I own a Japanese 360 and have a mix of US, European and Japanese games - All work flawlessly.

On the FPS glut on XB360, which also prevents me from getting it, until PS3 or XBox 360 have some cool Guitar Hero / Katamari / KOTOR / Monkey Ball diversity, I'll stick with Nin and my PS2.

I don't understand the FPS ragging about the 360, especially since GoW and Lost Planet aren't even first person. It's like complaining that nintendo is only for kids because all it has are Mario and Zelda. Stop the console stereotyping, it's dumb.
In a quick braindump, non FPS games I can think of on the 360:
Dead Rising
Saints Row
Oblivion (which was a 360 game ported TO the PC rather than the reverse)
PGR3
Cloning Cylde
Geometry Wars
Coming:
Mass Effect
Trusty Bell
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon
Forza 2
Viva Pinata
Settlers of Cataan
Alhambra
Lumines Live
Castle Crashers
Small Arms
Loads of games people are looking forward to. Hardly an "FPS-only" portfolio.
Endejas @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:01PM
You can't really compare launch games for the PS3 and the games that are coming out now. The developers have had a whole year to fine tune their games (remember, PS3 delayed?).
@ Flash.
1. PS3 will be pushing online because of Xbox Live. Kudos to Microsoft. No one's yet to see it, so you cannot compare quality. We'll have this discussion again in November.
2. Read above.
3. It's out now. PS3 was supposed to be out now.
4. He didn't say the 360 could do 1080p "better than the PS3". He said it could do it. Upscaling's fine. Keeps dev costs down, and gives more chance for originality. Most PS3 games are going to be 720p anyways. The power of software, eh?
5. Rumble. It's true. Go cry about it.
6. He got that from the recent [rumour] that Gran Turismo HD will sell in two versions. 1 will include vehicles and tracks, and the other will be upgradeable through micro-transactions. (i.e. buy a car - $.50, track $1.00)
7. I don't care you have a Macbook. +90% of the market has a Windows machine. If Vista ever ships, then we'll have integration there too.
8. Live Anywhere. Do you even know what it is? Because judging by your comment, it seems like you don't.
9. It's true. We have more games while you don't have a system. GRAW, Chromehounds, Oblivion, COD2; the list goes on, and will continue to grow. (Lost Planet, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and of course Halo 3 [among many others])
10. Looking through this thread, that seems to be true.
11. I don't think Microsoft ever promised HD-DVD in 360's. At least, they haven't since E3 05. And I still get a chuckle from remembering Sony's little under-handed trickiness.
12. lol. Let Japan enjoy their price drop [on the gimped PS3]. And as far as promising goes... E3 05.. that's all I'm sayin'.
So 360 owners have been experiencing next-gen game play for almost a year now, while you have been drooling over the scraps of good news that have been found in the plethora of bad. I'll let you get back to begging your parents for that $600. Unless you want to go for the gimped version.
;)
serbz @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:02PM
just pointing this out, 360 only outputs hd-dvd movies in 1080p, which you have to buy a 200 dollar add-on for anyway, and is ps3 land thats all standard for movies and games
p.s im not a fanboy i just love proving ppl wrong=]
Ian @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:05PM
LMAO! FLASH :D
You humor me, so because the PS3 has 1 good looking launch game that you must have played otherwise you wouldn't say its so awesome (sarcasm ^_^) it automatically beats the 360? Why don't you get back and start counting your money for a 600 dollar PS3 with 1 good launch game. Obviously you don't know that theres tons of great 360 games like CoD2, Oblivion, Saint's Row, Dead Rising, etc.
Damon @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:10PM
@ serbz, I like proving people wrong too. :-)
Quoted directly from the MS TGS press release:
"In addition, Microsoft announced that its fall software update, scheduled for release later this year, will allow all Xbox 360 consoles around the world to output game and movie content in 1080p resolution. "
See full press release here:

Happy @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:11PM
I don't know why everyone always complains about all the FPSs on the 360.. out of the games I've bought so far only one of them is an FPS and it is the only one I've considered returning. (Maybe I should have went with COD2 instead of PDZ =/)
Chris,
1. I don't know anyone whos 360 has broken, but Microsoft already said they would repair 2005 360s for free and give some people refunds.
2. According to Joystiq the PS3 is bigger than the 360. If by "everything" you mean the power brick then yes its external but it should be behind your TV where you can't see it.
3. Dumb argument because not everyone is going to get an HD-DVD drive.
4. My favorite games to date are Dead Rising, Saints Row, and DOA4
5. So the reason why Halo 2 is still popular on xbox live today is because it sucks?
6. I don't like RPGs but I'm pretty sure those boring turn based games shown at TGS are coming to north america.
Jason @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:11PM

p.s ps2 is gonna still dominate this holiday season
FSK405K @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:19PM
Nintendo (why?) doesn't show at TGS, except last year to premier the controller.
FSK405K @ Sep 23rd 2006 1:23PM
If by dominate the holiday season you mean, those few who can buy a PS3 love it, while everyone else buys Wiis like mad, and the $130 PS2 sits on shelves hoping that people who don't have it yet will want it for Guitar Hero 2, then, yes, PS2 will dominate. Of course if on Nov 24 the PS2 drops to $100, the GCN price, then Sony will kill.

i hate how all the playstation fanboys quote these "future" games saying how great they are when know one has realy played them at all!! it makes no sense how can anyone know if a game will be gd or not?? its not as if there has never been a bad sequel it wouldnt be that much of a surprise if even the next metal gear is shit, i certainly wouldnt be surprised i have read MANY impressions of games coming for the ps3 and everyone usualy has exactly the same thing to say which is they are STALE i.e. barely any improvement in gameplay over their last gen counterparts.
Also flash, m$ have never ever said that the xbox 360 would include HDDVD they only ever said it could be a possibility
Oblivion has NOT been announced for PS3
HDMI is not all its cracked up to be, it sends the hd signal without compressing it thereofr the equality is suposed to be better?? when in actual fact the results when compared with composite, vga or DVI arent even noticeable.
I have a ps2 and i have very fond memories of it, i also have alot of self respect, it was after all the lies sony told i decided not to invest in a ps3 (wheres my router functionality?? wheres my extra usb ports gone?? :-( ....)
TRUE HD!!! WTF I HAVE A SONY BRAVIA TV THAT OUTPUTS 1080i AND 720p IT SAYS ON THE BOX THAT ITS HD, SO GOING BY THEIR OWN LOGIC THEY HAVE LIED TO ME!! BASTARDS I BETTER GO AND GET MY MONEY BACK!! (sarcasm) see even sony themselves cant keep up with their own bullshit
Who cares if m$ is a monopolising company, sony also was a monopolising company before they lost a shit load of money because their consumer electronics quality are medioca to todays standards.
NEWSFLASH!!! nobodys comparing launch ps3 games with 3rd gen xbox 360 games, especialy sincethe big devs have had both dev kits for around the same time.
i will hang sum if i see another xbox360 + hddvd = post trying to compare prices because everyone seems to forget the value of choice, so the prices are closer now with the added hddvd for xbox360 but know one is considering the pricelesss ability to be able to choose.

Flash-
What I wanna know is... Have you actually played any of these PS3 games your using as your defense? I have neither a Xbox 360 nor plan to get a PS3 anytime soon (becuase PC is better than booth, for me anyways). It's really annoying to see people say how great these PS3 launch games will be when they have never played them (unless they are in the press and went to E3 or something) And besides, nearly every single launch line up for consoles is always bad, which is why I didn't get my PS2 until 2 years ago when all the really great games were out, and the console was half the price as it launched. And my PC has had graphics better than either the Xbox 360 or PS3 and I've had it for 2 years!
You can say all you want about how great the PS3 is, but save it until it's been realeased and you can actucally have used it.

Wow. Some days, you wake up, read Joystiq polls, and realize that you hate humanity.
As far as Lost Planet goes, from this post it sounds like just another deathmatch game. From what I've seen of LP, it seems like the best thing it has going for it is the look and feel of the game, not the gameplay. That being said, it still sounds like it will be awesome when it comes out.
Jake @ Sep 23rd 2006 2:26PM
Isn't this post supposed to be about Lost Planet Multiplayer. How did it turn out to be about a system that doesn't play Lost Planet and isn't even out yet?
Jeez.
Anywho, I think LP looks like a very fun game. The gameplay, with grappling hook, mechs, characters that move relatively slowly, and some other features, this game looks to be a nice spin on the shooter genre.
And no, PS3 won't be getting the game. Maybe the jealosy of that fact is what has attracted the trolls. ;)
Me_Izme @ Sep 23rd 2006 2:46PM
Yeah, they must have removed the posts of this "FLASH" character. Which is a shame, because I needed a good laugh. It's weird reading comments attacking a person who's posts are no longer active.
ANYWAY...
The singleplayer demo Capcom released was one of the best demos I've played on my 360 (next to Dead Rising ^o^). I can't wait for them to release a multiplayer demo to last us until the game's release.
@#42 (Godfather): I agree. The game is more about its look and feel rather than its gameplay. Not to say that the gameplay is bad, just not much that is new to get excited about, other than the constantly dropping health (due to the temperature) and the need to replenish it constantly, rather than periodically after you take some hits from enemies.
KBeat @ Sep 23rd 2006 3:29PM
I cannot wait for Lost Planet. I'm more excited about this game than I am GOW, especially after reading that the entire single player game in GOW can be wrapped up in about 10 hours. I get cold just playing the Lost Planet demo. :)
Kudos to Joystiq for removing Flashes posts. I wish they were more proactive in weeding out the foul-mouthed fanboy trolls (of all platforms) who are ruining the comments section.

After getting to play Lost Planet Multiplayer at GC2006, I can understand what all the fuss is about. It is a great game and plays really well when you have mechs and soldiers running around gunning each other down. Graphics are pretty good, the action is fast paced and the sound is pretty cool too.
My main reason for liking Lost Planet is that it is yet more Capcom love for the 360. As a gamer I would love to see more games crossing over from different consoles so everyone can get to play the best games no matter what console they have. Maybe we may see Devil May Cry appearing on a 360, who knows!
