TGS: Killzone 2, WRU?!

When Sony showed the now-infamous Killzone 2 trailer at E3 2005 I got goosebumps all over. Though we're all aware now that the trailer was merely CGI flimflammery, the memory still haunts those of us lucky enough to experience it in that darkened theater with sound so rich and deep it gave us a heart massage.
Therefore, it's with no small disappointment that we report that Killzone 2 remains AWOL. After mysteriously disappearing from the E3 2006 lineup, Killzone 2 failed to show up at TGS.
Some would suggest that this isn't a big deal as the Japanese gamer doesn't dig FPS games all that much. That excuse doesn't explain the huge presence of Resistance: Fall of Man in Sony's TGS booth. What gives?

Maybe they know it cant live up to the expectations people have.
nambit @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:44AM
What about Halo3? Nothing mentioned about that either and no one breaks a sweat.
ejflex @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:44AM
Maybe they know they lied their asses off and it ended up coming back and nipping those asses that they just lied off.. umm... off... or something.

killzone might be late but it'll rock

Halo has made appearances only in pre-rendered teasers. Sony however has gotten accustomed to the practice of saying that some presentations are real-time and running on the final specs and that causes these problems when you see a tech demo like the one at e3, it's only natural to expect enough progress for a playable demo.
nootau @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:59AM
ummm...Halo 3 has release information, mid-2007. KillZone has vanished, with no word on possible release, etc. Zero, Nada.

These renders take a long time, guys.
Armin @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:13AM
Killzone 2 doesn't exist. Only the pre-rendered trailer does. Nothig has been mentioned since E3 2005 from the company.
It was a hoax to hype up the PS3 at E3 2005, nothing more.
Zedd @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:27AM
I actually think it's more likely that they are focusing on Resistance, because that's their big launch FPS. Showing more of Killzone 2 would obviously steal most of Resistance's thunder. We'll see more of Killzone 2 at some big event after the launch, if it can live up to the E3 2005 trailer is another question...
cheese @ Sep 23rd 2006 6:49AM
Killzone 2 will be the PS3's "Second Coming"--the first being Resistance--as much as Halo 3 will be the Xbox 360's "Second Coming"--the first on 360 obviously being Gears of War. Based on the graphics of Gears I would be very careful of trying to downplay or predict what Killzone 2 will look like in finished form, especially having seen Resistance in action. Oh and btw, yes, Japanese could care less about FPS games.

In OPM the dutch edition, They had an interview with Guerilla about Killzone liberation for the PSP. At the end of the interview they asked if the PSP-titel can communicate with the PS3 game Killzone2, guerilla said: Its all in development so im sorry i cant tell you that, more information of Next-Gen Killzone will come after the launch of Killzone liberation.
So There you have it guys, just wait a few months, it will come....

Very true Killzone was no where to be seen,no where at all.
However there was Ninja Gaiden, GTHD (1080p), MGS4, FFXIII, FFXIII-V, Resistance, Motostorm, FI, Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3 (1080p), Ridge Racer 7 (1080p), Lair (being in 1080p and having too many things going on at the same time not to mention can't be done on the 360, Mobile Suit Gundam (1080p), White Knight, NBA '07 (1080p), Devil May Cry 4, Heavenly Sword and The Eye of Judgment: Conquerors of 9 Fields (which in its own right is very innovative can't wait for the xbox vision camera to pull that off.)
But you are right Killzone was nowhere to be seen maybe they had some other shooter that they are trying to promote who knows.
Point of the post: there are actually great games at TGS great sony games at that. Where the hell are the blog posts on those games. I can understand the anti-sony thing to get hits but there isn't even an attempt to post the stuff thats worth looking at. I made that list off the top of my head and I lnow I'm missing more games. When the Microsoft event is held I can see it now non stop posts on if not all majority of the 360 coverage.
I just love you guys, keep on doing the great work. By the way did anyone else notice at least 5 games in the impossible to do 1080p? And Lair the most technically impressive of all doing it without a hitch. Give the props where they are due thats all i ask.

Bungie doesnt use pre-rendered cgi on their cinematics , they always use the in game engine in real time , HALO 2 Teaser wasnt cgi , was in game but didnt have AI or controls processing so after adding those it takes a huge toll on the hardware making it look like it shouldnt. HALO 3 is real time , you should see the making of halo 3 teaser.
John @ Sep 23rd 2006 8:07AM
It was there. The game was just in the 4th dimension while joystiq was still in the 3rd dimension. Still drinking analog water with their non-digital mouths. So last generation. Come to the Fourth generation; the digital Kool-Aid is fine.
Todd H. @ Sep 23rd 2006 8:10AM
Umm... #4 Halo 3 was not prerendered it was running real time on the in game engine. Bungie even showed it was not prerendered after the screening of the teaser by moving the camera around the environment. whereas kill zone was just a pretty CGI film like FF VII advent children.
Kumman @ Sep 23rd 2006 8:36AM
resistance is a launch title isn't is?
launch is coming soon isn't it?
See the connection?
yakapo @ Sep 23rd 2006 8:48AM
was it just me or was the dialogue on the cg killzone 2 trailer really bad?
"listen up, aim straight!" (as opposed to what- aiming crooked?)
"get off, get off, get off this thing!"
in the future we drop soldiers into combat on flying open air barges?
and in the future, we have no need for helmets right?
SelfConshus @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:18AM
Umm...Killzone 2 isn't at TGS because it either doesn't exist or it's no where near ready to be seen. Besides all that, why would they show it anyway? They are pushing Resistance hard right now and it's most likely going to be launching with the PS3 itself. So why steal it's thunder? I say we'll see something new around Summer 07.

Hey, at least the helghast weren't screaming KILLL THEMMM!!!!!!! in the same voice every 5 seconds. That got old quick.
I really don't get why people are excited about Killzone 2. The original was horrible and derivative. The only reviewers that really liked it were PSM and OPM (I wonder why?) I mean, if the first game in the series is crappy, then why would you even want a sequal?
Jonn @ Sep 23rd 2006 9:49AM
They're not showing it because it doesn't exist. Nothing's been shown but the trailer. No box art, concept images, anything from the guys who are supposedly making the game. And they certainly needed something to blunt the stab of the price announcement during E3.
And if they had Killzone 2, they *wouldn't need Resistance* for launch.
De Nile. Not just a river in Egypt.
Chris @ Sep 23rd 2006 11:46AM
i say that halo 3 and gears of war will make this game not sell as much because microsoft roks and with fps like gears of war and halo 3 comming out it has a better chance in that field if u ask me
Wild Homes @ Sep 23rd 2006 12:52PM
you make a valid point asking why we're all so excited about Killzone 2, it certainly isn't a world-ending franchise. however, I'm less inclined to worry about pouring tens of millions into that franchise than I am worried about Konami pouring tens of millions into developing a PS3 version of Coded Arms. if Killzone is a mediocre-to-good franchise, Coded Arms is a crap-ass-to-shit franchise, and Konami seems unable to let it go.
I get the idea of making same-gen sequels to underwhelming titles because it allows you to get a little more money out of the same development assets that could presumably help you break even, but why make a next-gen title with all new development costs and materials in a franchise that won't do anything to help the game? I don't think anyone who might end up buying Coded Arms Assault will do so because they loved the bad PSP versions in the series...
but I'm with the guy above. a lot of pretty impressive things (with the exception of GTHD, a 1080p port of a last-gen 1080i title does nothing for me) were running at 1080p for the PS3 at TGS, and Lair in particular looks mind-blowingly great. I just hope that the game is a bit more engaging than Rogue Squadron With Dragons. kudos to Sony for pulling off some pretty impressive titles.
Shipley @ Sep 23rd 2006 2:05PM
Killzone 2 isn't being shown not because they can't do those graphics, but because Killzone 1 was boring and doesn't deserve a sequel.
Tim @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:30PM
Killzone will never live up to peoples expectations
bobvid @ Sep 23rd 2006 5:33PM
Killzone 2 WAS at TGS you silly pies.... except it's called Killzone: Liberation.
Killzone 3 is for PS3.
J Brandon @ Sep 24th 2006 9:49PM
I really liked Killzone, but it wasn't because of the story, gameplay, graphics or any of the usual reasons. I liked the atmosphere. It sucked me in -- that grayed out war-torn look always gets me as a sci-fi fan.
But when will Sony really get the flaming they deserve for passing off CGI as real gameplay?
I'm a hardended game journalist and I got sucked in. I thought, how could Sony trick us all with a fake? That would piss us off so much we might not want to fanboy all over the PS3 as much. I think the worst one was that mud racing game. The real thing at E3 was stupifyingly lame. Surely they must know the corporate term "managing expectations"?
