WTF is up with that headline? It has NOTHING to do with the article at all. That headline is the most obvious example of Joystiq's blatant fanboyism towards Nintendo.

I refuse to preorder the Wii, locking myself into a specific retailer (at least, until I go throgh the struggle of getting my deposit back from them). Instead, I'll have 5 stores in my area to choose from: Walmart, Target, Kmart, Best Buy, and Gamestop. If I can't find a Wii in one of those stores, the demand is significantly higher than I anticipated.

Anyone know if 24-hour Walmarts will be selling them at midnight on the 19? I may be able to beat the crowd if I can weasel one out that way.

Yeah, the headline is a bit too much, but still - a pretty incredible feat to have 1 million consoles ready for launch.

? @ Tony

If Nintendo has more consoles at launch, and both consoles sell out (which is obviously going to happen), the Wii HAS to outsell the PS3 at launch.

Wait, was that sarcasm? :)

No, it's pointing out a statistical likelyhood. With just over twice as many units available, the Wii would have to sell only half its entire stock to "win". Given the heavy support, that appears so likely as to be guaranteed. Sure, it's not the best of headlines, but it still gets the point across.

I find it funny how different people see different "fanboyism" towards the three competitors. However, Tony, this headline does have to do with the article. Why? Because every console sells at launch (for every company), but Sony will ship far less PS3s than Nintendo ships Wiis.

Although, I must admit that this article is pointless. It's pointless because, when you think about it, even without the 1M, there would still be more Wii consoles than PS3 consoles on their respective launch days.

Bias? No.
Pointless? Yes.

What is wrong with you guys? I'll say what's been said:

Nintendo will outsell the PS3 due to the fact there are more systems to buy. That's it. Remember that 1 million is more than 400 thousand? So the headline actually DOES have something to do with the article. It's a small joke. The point of a headline is to get you to read the article. So whether you are a Nintendo fan or a Sony fan, when you see this headline, you feel that you should read it. It is not putting down the PS3, its simply stating the facts. You Sony fanboys
need to grow up.

On another note, how many units will be launched in Japan and PAL territories?

I believe the 360 launched with around six to seven hundred thousand units if I remember correctly, so to say there won't be a shortage of wii's is probably a tad optimistic. I know a lot of gamers and non-gamers alike that are looking foward to pickin one of these babies up, and truthfully, I plan on cashing in on that demand (The day gamestop/eb begins taking preorders, I'm visiting numerous locations in my area to put money down.. and I'll be outside of Bestbuy so I can buy one for myself too).

OK THATS IT!!!!!!!!!! I have heard enough of people calling Joystiq writers fanboys. First they were M$ fanboys, then they were Sony fanboys, and now they are Nintendo fanboys. Look just cut the crap. If some of the writers are personally excited about playing nintendo's new console then who gives a rats ass because they are in the same boat as alot of gamers. FPS with a wii-mote online and free. Nothing is gonna top that for a $250 price tag. The graphics will be more then good enough and if I can't see the ass hair of the orc I am killing then OH NOES!!!!!!!!!! TEH TINENDO IS TEH SUXORZZZZ!!!!!! (sarcasm of the highest degree). Look these guys pretty much give it to you straight. If they think that Sony's press conference was dull then so be it. Maybe it WAS boring as hell.

I am a fanboy of no machine and I don't own a console anymore. I have a PSP and a DS and thats it for right now. After TGS I can tell you I am most excited for the RPGs that are coming to the 360. I will get a 360 when the price drops to compete with Sony. I am definitely getting a Wii at launch because its affordable. I can't tell you how much I miss games that use some form of light gun and this will be a rebirth of those types of games (Operation Wolf Anyone??? Classic NES game with Wi-mote capabilities?? I smell a remake in the mix).

I think that since they have polled the gaming community(weird but true like its some type of election?) That the demand for both systems are higher then anticapated, in fact I think we will see a shortage of wii until feb of next year, and for the playstation, I see a shortage for the next two years, unless they can get there manufacturing lines in 2X's mode.

Anyone have launch details for the major platforms dating back to the days of the N64? I'm just curious if one million is "wow, that's a lot" or if it's "hmm, more than the PS3, but still not enough".

From the sounds of it, though, 1 million sounds like it'll be plenty.

Ok I realize that Joystiq didn't invent the blogging style, but the site that was linked to, digitalbattle, looked a LOT like Joystiq. From the little things like the comments on the side of the site, to the big things like following the same layout(blog entries occupy the same amount of screen, with the headline and text in the same colors and fonts). Maybe you can't sue for copyright infridgement, but you should definitly say something Joystiq. They stole your idea.

Unless they are part of Weblogs, Inc. also.

wii is made from older technology which is the reasoning for the large amount of launch systems. It doesnt have any powerful graphics chips like 360 either. I always want to try new things in games but i am very skeptical of regular casual gamers accepting this system for that reason and the reason of the controller.

Both systems will sell out but they will still be quite even in terms of money based on the price difference regardless of the 80/20 distribution.
Wii 250*1 million=250,000,000
Ps3(60g)320,000*600=192,000,000/
(20g)80,000*500=40,000,000 for a total of 232,000,000. So you can make an assumption that nintendo must release more than the ps3 just to stay competitive. Fine they will have an 18,000,000 dollar head start but Sony will make that up with other shipments.

Good point, Jason. But then it's also important to consider collateral purchases. There will be 600,000 more Wii owners purchasing games and accessories than there will be PS3 owners doing the same.

Let's take the conservative estimate of
each Wii owner buys one remote ($40) and one game ($50) = $90
each PS3 owner buys one controller (~$50) and one game (~$60) = $110

that's $90 * 1 million = $90,000,000 additional revenue
vs
$110 * 400,000 = $44,000,000 additional revenue

you make a good point but in terms of game output I believe ps3 games will be better than wii only because of the pure power of the ps3. so yes i agree the wii will be more profitable than ps3 initially but just like the ps2 did a few years ago it has longevity and a great library.

The title of the article talks about "The million machine march" held in Animatrix "the second renaissance" which is based on "the million man march"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Second_Renaissance#Million-Machine_March
That's why the wiimotes has those orange buttons similar to the eyes of the robots in Animatrix
So it's not pointless they just wanted to be creative
It's because the number ONE Million.
The xbox sold like 326,000 units in November according to WP

You're also forgetting the fact that many people (including myself) will be buying virtual console games at launch. I don't know what the average of these purchases will be (I will probably buy all of the SNES and N64 offerings right away, for example), but the last time I checked Sony wasn't making a penny off of their online service (or lack thereof) either.
Basically, Nintendo will be raping Sony when it comes to profit. The problem is, Nintendo's already rich from the DS. Bastards ;).

#24: Power doesn't decide how well a system sells. The Playstation, for example, was considerably weaker than the N64 but still managed to become the fastest-selling console of all time, leaving the N64 quite far behind. The PS2 was less powerful than both the Gamecube and the Xbox but managed to actually replace the Playstation as the fastest-selling system of all time and has sold more than double the amount of the other two combined.

If people were the kind of notorious graphic whores that everyone seems to think, neither of those would have happened.

btw, take a look at the front page and scroll down a bit. whats that i see? a story about the ps3 having a longer line at tgs than nintendo at e3? NO WAY!

that pretty much kills your "joystiq is biased" argument.

"i have one question for the people who claim joystiq is biased: WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE? if you dont like what they post then fucking leave already."

To be fair, there is bias among the Joystiq bloggers. They don't all share the same bias, but it's there. If it wasn't, then none of the Joystiq bloggers would be posting entries on the other sites (PS3Fanboy.com, nintendowiifanboy.com, xbox360fanboy.com).

"btw, take a look at the front page and scroll down a bit. whats that i see? a story about the ps3 having a longer line at tgs than nintendo at e3? NO WAY!"

Not only was Nintendo (Sony's major Japanese competition) not at TGS, but the convention is open to the public.

And, to go along with me 'they're biased, but not for the same thing' point, look at the difference between the TGS line entry, and this one. This one is from Kevin, the other is from Chris.

Oh, and just because people still comment on here, doesn't mean that bias doesn't exist among the bloggers. That's like saying because I don't like a Big Mac, I won't eat at McDonalds.

Are we to assume that the Canada VP is talking about all of North America, or that he means that 1mil will be available in Canada. If in Canada, then that really puts the screws down in other countries: 1mil in Canada, probably 1.5mil in US....1.5mil the rest of the world at launch? Has my NFL Sunday alcohol not worn off enough or do others read this the same way I do?

Ok look people lets get one thing straight, Wii will out sale the Ps3 cause its shipping more the Ps3 is only shipping half of what the Wii is shipping. But we all know that the Ps3 is gunna be king of the games cause of the graphics but Wii will be king of selling much faster just because its not expensive as the Ps3 or the Xbox 360 Ps3- 600 or 500 Xbox 360- 500 or 400 (i think) and Wii- 250 that means Wii is king of selling Im a Ps3 fan so of course im going to buy a Ps3
