FSK405K:
From what I understood, Ron Bertram (Nintendo Canada's VP) said that there would be 1 million Wii units available day one in Northa America. 1 million at launch for Canada alone sounds like it'd be way to high. That means 1 million more will be divided up amongst Japan, Europe, and Australia (as well as South America I believe). Then, between launch and December 31st, Nintendo will release at least another 2 million world wide, bringing 2006's Wii total to 4 million units shipped.

Sounds good to me, but why do we have to listen to a Canadian for our US launch numbers? I just can't trust him.

@51

It's not just the US launch numbers, it's North America's launch numbers. As for listening to a Canadian, would prefer someone from Nintendo of America telling us one thing and then someone from Ninendo of Europe telling us otherwise? Remember the issue with the Wii being region free and then not being region free?

I think it's safe to assume that the VP of NoC can give us a reliable answer.

Anybody who disagrees with that headline should be shot for ignorance on sight. There's nothing fanboyish about it, it's just a fact given the numbers...

Joystiq team, you should honestly think about starting to ban some people around here...

I'm in total agreement with you, J. I've been reading Joystiq for years and only in the past few months have I started reading the comments. Before that I was never aware of the bias of this inanimate website.

There are a ton of people who get very upset by any opinion which doesn't completely support their beliefs, and they want nothing more than to derail good conversations going on in the comments sections by sidetracking us with their ignorance and need for attention.

And then there's people who were just never taught how to communicate in the first place:

Elve: "Relax guys is Joystiq ... we can expect thing like this every day"

Is that your impression of a caveman, or is your grammar really that bad?

I think that either way you look at it, both will sale like I said, however nintendo will probley take the initial sales from sony, which I figure are huge as far as accsessablity and a quick market grab, espically if it is as adicting as some say, this could be a well placed marketing scheme, as I recall, they build a billion dollar manufacturing plant with IBM, and I assume because of that, nintendo will be able to meet the demand(well at least I hope). As always nintendo has put out quality hardware, so I assume sony might be the only to have "problems" when their system launches, though on sonys plus side, they do have a extensive library, that if you look at it, might help keep there software sales alive. Though I think even though nintendo's system might be the weakest of the bunch, it always depends on the knowledge of the programmer. What I mean by this is that if you have someone that knows the cubes code well(re4 for example) you can make a good looking game, and a long one(just more discs) but if it 2-3 times more then the cube, I am personally not worried... at all. I plan to get a ps3 when its like 199... probley 4 years from now.

The Wii will out sell the PS3 without a doubt. In virtually every game generation the least powerful console has won, PS, PS2, DS. they all had (have) more powerful compertition yet they still out sold everything else. Power isnt everything.

Have you ever stopped to wonder. One million units? They are going to need a big fucking warehouse(s) to store them.

Shocking news: cheaper product sells more than a highly-priced one! News at 11!

yeah, yeah, it'll sell more, it'll turn into real profit for Nintendo, and it'll also be a pumped-up last generation console. Plus, the wiimote is a fad which will quickly grow old as people tire of swinging their arms all around... most likely, it'll only be used in point-and-click games like FPS's or the card and board games targetted at non-gamers...

For some reason I just cant get excited over the wii. In my opinion the specs on the wii are what the gamecube should have been, and if Nintendo didnt want to copete power wise with the xbox 360 or ps3 they should have come out with a system that would have been at least half as powerful as the 360 or ps3. I used to play nintendo games but over the years one strange and unexplainable thing happened, I grew up and so did my taste of games. Unfortunately Nintendo could not do the same.

^Twilight Princess. Metroid Prime. Red Steel. Excite truck. Splinter Cell 4. COD 3.

Just because something is "kiddy" doesn't make it any less fun.

Granted wii will have a few more mature games but a few exceptions to kids games does not make a complete overhaul that Nintendo needs. Think about it, in order for Nintendo to succed it needs more then just Mario, Metroid, and Zelda, true they are well established franchises that do very well, but the wii will need new exclusive games that will make gamers outside of it's current target audience want to get the system.

I remember the day the gamecube launched. I decided about 1 in the afternoon to go see if I could find one. I walked into bestbuy and asked if they had any left. The bestbuy employees pretty much laughed me out of the store.
I almost went home but toysRus was across the street so I decided to try over there. I walked over to the videogames and said to the two guys at the counter.

"any gamecubes left?"
"turn around" they said

I turned around and there was a whole pile of gamecubes, untouched, still stacked in their pyramid shape.

I picked up the gamecube and the extras and they rang it up.
"$287.55" they said.
I opened my pockets and saw that I had only brought $286 dollars with me.

luckily I had a $1.55 in the coin keeper of my car.

That is exactly what third party games, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Project HAMMER, and Excite Truck are for.
