I, Mario [update 1]
A team of truly dedicated fans, without a blessing from Nintendo, are designing the Super Mario Bros. experience in a meticulously realistic style. This means breaking down the Mario story, turning the mushrooms into real hallucinogens, and finding out how a plumber would react in real life while fighting giant, mutated turtles. This means understanding why said plumber would throw fireballs, grow wings, and breathe under water. All that, and much more.
Join their team and figure out these daunting gameplay problems. We only hope the final version will be as entertaining as the other real-life Mario we've seen.
[Fixed idiotic spelling error, thanks Tee]

Sweeeet. Hallucinogens. Am I the only one who is worried about what may come from this?

Mario is a victim of Agent Orange used in Vietnam, kinda like that movie Jacob's Ladder. He's really in a coma in some New York Hospital, stuck on a diet of Mushrooms, Cake and Turtle Soup... This diet is keeping in a nightmare of mutant turtles and walking mushrooms. To which there is no end, and the girl of his dreams is kidnapped about every two years.
Sadly, in (or around) 1987, his diet was changed to something experimental. Vegetables and Fruit. He was able to battle his demons with veggies and fruit and for a short time, Mario woke up from his coma in the middle of the night... no one noticed... and then he went back to sleep.
He hasn't awakened since.

Sooo awesome. And they want to make it a game, too. A rated 'M' one. The sketches on the I, Mario message boards are freaking sweet for the most part.
Hopefully this doesn't turn into a crappy game version of the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

"I, Mario" has been around for at least a year now. It started as just a random idea in the forums on OverClocked Remix and had such massive support from a lot of people there that they eventually got their own message board. I did some digital coloring for a few of the concept sketches (namely the armored Koopa, Magikoopa & Geno) on the message board they got specifically for the project: http://specter24.proboards44.com/index.cgi

I swear if I were to start making fun of these Mario fanboys I would keep on going, and going, and going, and ...... you get the point! Hopefully someone tells them that there is a game addiction clinic now abailable somewher in Europe. Hopefully they will get a life, but maybe thats too much to ask for.

Dammit! I thought a while back it would be cool if Mario were put into reality and had to explain his situation. Damn procrastination (sp?)

Man, I'm reading some of the first post in the Story Development thread and what the HELL are they going on about? A bomb? In the mushroom kingdom there's lower gravity and humans can use telepathy? What the hell kind of story are they slapping together?
Not my idea of making the Mario universe more realistic or believable.

How are they planning on getting around issues of licencing and copyrights? Are they planning on making it some sort of shareware or an online game to try to get around it?
Besides such issues, it looks really cool and I hope they go through with it.

Nintendo has stated they want to push into more M rated territories. If this turns out to be decent, Nintendo would do good to pick it up and publish it. Not only would they use a major first party character to help shed the "kiddy" image, they'd also be getting a game that is very cheap.

@#9:
I pitched and argued some ideas on the board sometime last year. The thing with the story is that the Mario game really doesn't have one, aside from the "Rescue the Princess" theme. What they're trying to do is create an explaination for the state of the Mushroom Kingdom (floating blocks, etc... not including races), and not simply that it is a "Magical World". "The Bomb" is simply one way of explaining things.
Keep in mind that nothing is really set in stone, and a lot of the people aren't even sure it will go anywhere, though I'm sure many would like it to. ^o^
Damn. I'm getting the itch to start contributing again. That concept art is just so... bitchin'.

This project is doomed. Lookup the 3D version of Chrono Trigger for a similar supercool idea that tanked. Who thinks Nintendo will let someone make anything Mario that has hallucinogens? I would be thrilled to see it do well, though.
