PSP's PlayStation emulator released, not by Sony
The homebrew community has beaten Sony to the punch, releasing the first PlayStation (1) emulator for PSP, called PSX-P. But, as this is simply the first public beta version, the emulator suffers from speed issues, among other defects. Riiiiidge Racer is reported to clock in at a paltry 10 fps.PSX-P is compatible with PSP firmware v1.00–2.71 (an eLoader is necessary beyond firmware v1.50).

Suck it Sony!
iceatcs @ Sep 26th 2006 3:42PM
Remind you that it have been ripped off from previous coder who made very first PSX emulator for PSP.
And 95% games are not working yet.
Lynx @ Sep 26th 2006 3:50PM
The GP2X has been emulating playstation games at better speeds than that for months....
It's just emulation - Sony will obviously be investing quite a bit in it's development.
crono141 @ Sep 26th 2006 3:51PM
The point is: who is going to pay for sony's download service (in 2 months) when they can get all they games they already own to work for free given just a little bit more time?
The last ace in the hole of the PSP has been effectively neutered.
FSK405K @ Sep 26th 2006 3:53PM
Why did homebrewers beat Sony to this? Was Sony concerned that no one would buy any PSP games if they could just play PS1 on it? I would be.
JimmyHACK @ Sep 26th 2006 3:55PM
1) IT DOESN'T WORK WORTH A SHI*T
2) Prolly won't get any better because its just a ripoff of someone else's earlier work.
3) The sony one will work great.
nothing like seeing thief within the homebrew community.... pirates ARGGGGG
Sam @ Sep 26th 2006 3:56PM
it's just a matter of time before they get this running well.
FSK405K @ Sep 26th 2006 3:57PM
lol a guy named JimmyHACK shouting epithets about our fine homebrewers.
Vasil @ Sep 26th 2006 4:06PM
Meh..The GP2X one is going well enough. I'm hoping for improvement on both. Actually, all GP2X homebrew is great. All it's missing is a larger homebrew community. But when I'm looking at the comments on PSPUpdates, I tend to change my mind.
John @ Sep 26th 2006 4:13PM
It looks promising, Im sure if they continue development, it'll be running well in the near future.
Portable Resident Evil, I can hardly wait.
ketsuke @ Sep 26th 2006 4:13PM
As a gamer that used to own a PSP this is good news in the sense that with time maybe it will be worth it to go back to the PSP. So far there is SNES emulation on the DS, but it barely works. Maybe once the PSP implements PSX emulation we can get some good games in. My soul for Chrono Trigger!
Marino Rancier @ Sep 26th 2006 4:19PM
It's very sad to see people desperately trying to find ways to use their PSP. I bought one and return it after 2 weeks. It just wasn't worst it. Please, don't take this personally, but if dished out 250 clams to play NES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, and -old console name here- , then it is time to reasses your need for this device. It's very sad that Sony went and screwed up the one portable that could have kicked nintendo's ass for good. They sold us a Movie Player.
JimmyHACK @ Sep 26th 2006 4:21PM
@ 8
sorry friends gave it to me in highschool cause i played pc games....
im sory it wasn't something cooler like maybe "FSK405K"
if i changed my nick once a week like some people maybe i'd luck out with one you would like. then maybe we could date, cause you know i am posting comments here just to impress you...
back to the topic, this emulator will not live to see more than 1 game playing at 100%

"Portable Resident Evil, I can hardly wait."
You don't have to wait. It's already on the DS :P
That aside, I'm glad to see the PSP hacker group still going strong. Long ago when I owned a PSP (before it broke and I got my money back which I used to buy ds games), I downloaded all the newest stuff. It's amazing what these guys are capable of doing when Sony (or any big company for that matter) can't do with all the money in the world.
Will @ Sep 26th 2006 4:29PM
I just don't see why anyone would get excited about playing PS1 games on the PSP with its one analog stick. Well, unless of course you were like me and begging for some justification for the excitement and expense of purchasing a pretty little piece of eye candy and now don't want to face the inevitable truth that the PSP, as is, just isn't deigned well.
The ZeroCorpse @ Sep 26th 2006 4:31PM
Yay! More 10-year-old games you can illegally play on your new $200 console!
Where are these "homebrew" games I keep hearing about on the PSP? All I ever see is pirated ROMs.
LostToys @ Sep 26th 2006 4:38PM
Marino Rancier,
I would agree with you if the only purpose of the PSP was to play emulated titles.
For me, I welcome the chance to play PSX and older legacy titles for the simple reason that there are always months in between title launches. It is always nice having content that you can play in the interim.
Vegito @ Sep 26th 2006 4:47PM
I originally bought a PSP for Metal Slug Anthology. Holy shit. If I knew this was all it had to offer and MSA would be announced for the PS2 and Wii, I really doubt I would've bought it. Half-working emulators and homebrew. Seen it, only with much more progress: PC and GP2X. Atleast the multimedia features are good..Oops. Well, atleast all the other kids will think I'm cool for owning one. Yay trendy!
crono141 @ Sep 26th 2006 5:03PM
I wonder why anyone hasn't (or have they) figured out a hack to tear the psp open and use its UMD drive on, say, a PC?
Then make a decent PSP emulator for PSP.
Maybe people would buy PSP games then...
Oh wait, no they wouldn't. PSP games suck, and the only thing its good for is playing crappy rez movies and mp3s.
At least its still DRM free (for now).
Rayek @ Sep 26th 2006 5:04PM
Yeah, suck it Sony.
dudelookslikealady @ Sep 26th 2006 5:05PM
Jimmy hack your name should be jimmy troll maybe then you can date him LMFAOROFLOL!
Bones3D @ Sep 26th 2006 5:08PM
I've heard rumors of an official sony PSX emulator that can play PS1 titles from memory sticks, downloaded from a service similar to the virtual console option we'll be seeing on the Wii in the months ahead.
One thing I'm curious about though, is whether or not the code base for it will be based off of Connectix's Virtual Game Station, which they purchased to EoL the product a few years ago.
Newbie Sensation @ Sep 26th 2006 5:15PM
Emulation is for people who can't afford consoles. BUY THE REAL GAMES, PEOPLE. DS fanboys are so full of shit, spreading this "PSP IS ONLY GOOD FOR EMULATION" crap. The PSP has good games with REAL graphics, while the DS has GBA-quality kiddy shit. The OFFICIAL PSX emulator will work and play perfectly, while all the homebrewers will be stuck playing old shitty Nintendo/Sega games and the DS fanboys will be stuck playing lawyer simulators and sudoku.
ketsuke @ Sep 26th 2006 5:18PM
The appeal (at least for me) of playing older titles in a portable format is that I missed a lot of these games the first go around, due to monetary concerns, life itself (joining the Marines) and other reasons. Now, as an older geek with a bit of disposable income and a bit of time, I would love to get down to some ol' school gaming at short bursts. I already have a GBA, and a DS and I love the fact that I can play anywhere, even in the john! So bring it, my wallet awaits!
pandafresh @ Sep 26th 2006 5:42PM
i dunno, i can name a lot of games for the psp worth playing. i dont know where people come from with the "NO GAMES ON PSP!" thing or the "ALL PSP GAMES ARE PORTS!" no, most psp games arent ports. people its okay to own a DS and not be a fanboy, it really is.
ar0s @ Sep 26th 2006 5:51PM
God damn fanboys. Just buy both consoles, tramps >:(
Dr.Swiss @ Sep 26th 2006 6:14PM
Awwww, poor Newbie Sensation. By the looks of it, you were probably balling your eyes out as you wrote that.
There there, little boy, you shouldn't waste your time blubbering here when there's livejournal and myspace waiting for you.
So wipe up away that running mascara and remember;
It's down the river, not across the street.
AoE @ Sep 26th 2006 6:50PM
@Newbie Sensation
Wow... Really? Because... I've got a pretty complete set of consoles starting with pong and ending with the 360 (well, until november) and I LOVE emulation, I even play games that I have the systems/carts for still. As for the "BUY THE REAL GAMES, PEOPLE." statement? I challenge you to find a copy of Snatcher for sale. In fact, I'll tell you what, you find a copy of that for me, and I'll stop using emulators... What? you say it's not for sale anywhere?! Sometimes it's not lack of money or lack of desire to part with it, eh? ;)
As for the rest of your post; are you on Sony's payroll or something? I ask only because that kind of brown-nosing is generally only inspired by a paycheck... You make some of the resident Sony fanboys around here seem like haters by comparison.
AoE @ Sep 26th 2006 6:51PM
Also, just to clarify, Snatcher for Sega CD, which (afaik) is the only release of the game in english. :)
sony funny @ Sep 26th 2006 6:54PM
poor sony. now who the heck is gonna pay to play their ps1 games when they can get it for free for their psp? homebrew is out of control.....i guess there is a price for being the best for home brew.....poor sony.
Cody @ Sep 26th 2006 8:36PM
Someone fed the fanboys today, didn't they?
I have no idea why it is that a simple post about a homebrew emulator for the PSP ignites an entire tirade by fanboys saying that the DS is better, no, the PSP is better, no, consoles as a whole is better, yada yada yada.
The PSP has some real gaming gems. For example, Loco Roco, Metal Gear Acid, Maverick Hunter X, Ghosts & Goblins, and Mercury.
The DS has some real gaming gems. For example, New Super Mario Bros, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Brain Age, Cooking Mama, and Metroid Prime Hunters.
Each console is for a different person's taste. You buy the console for the games you want to play. Just because someone buys a DS is no reason to literally hate that person and their decision. People should realize that even though that person is playing a DS when they have a PSP, they're still a video game player. And if they're already a video game player, then they're one degree easier to understand already, and you have a common bond with that person as it stands before you ever talk to them.
Fanboyism is totally unnecessary. Internet anonimity is no real reason to go hog wild and ridicule people because of their gaming decision.
Techni @ Sep 26th 2006 10:53PM
"The point is: who is going to pay for sony's download service (in 2 months) when they can get all they games they already own to work for free given just a little bit more time? The last ace in the hole of the PSP has been effectively neutered"
Ironic how PSP emulates everything Wii's Virtual Console does, for free.
Shagi @ Sep 26th 2006 11:46PM
I think there are a lot of morons on here emulating intelligent conversation.
Ratchet the Lombax @ Sep 27th 2006 12:27AM
@Newbie Sensation
I too have most every game system that has been out since the Atari 2600. I even have the Virtual boy (oh God why) any way like someone else said I like the PSPs homebrew emulation for its portability. As I can't really take 6 game systems around with me now can I? As far as "buy the real games" goes I do buy all the current gen games. But as was stated before you can't really find most of the old school games anymore. Plus I'm not going to hook up 6 or 7 extra game systems to my TV when I can just take out my PSP and play a quick game. I think the DS owners may be a little upset because we keep seeing more and more homebrew and emulators made for the PSP and not that much for the DS except for that Moonshell thing.
Also Cody I fully agree with you every time there is a post about a game system out come the fanboys to bash it. Like I said before I own all the systems out now and I like each of them for different reasons. Why can't gamers just come together and enjoy what we love the games instead of insulting each other.
Lastly the "Yay! More 10-year-old games you can illegally play on your new $200 console!" statement is kinda dumb because isn't this one of the big selling point of the Wii? Granted they will be legal since you can buy them but they are still 10 or 15 year old games on a $250 system and it isn't even portable.
7 @ Sep 27th 2006 1:41AM
I agree with Newbie Sensation. Too many DS fanboys on this site. But I've grown more tolerable of emulation/homebrew lately, as it seems alot of gamers have. If something really isn't directly available/OOP, I think emulation is kinda fair, even though I would've preferred giving money to the creators. Also, to whoever brought up Snatcher: I CAN sell you this Sega CD copy I ebayed years ago, but it's a horrendously overrated game. =p
Jake @ Sep 27th 2006 5:15PM
This homebrew version sucks, right now. They may git 'r' going, though.
pixelator @ Sep 28th 2006 2:03AM
"You don't have to wait. It's already on the DS :P"
I got it. And it sucks.
As usual, the DS Fanboys can't let any PSP thread go by without pissing all over it.
