XBLA gets DOOM today, Soccer later
Id software's classic first-person shooter DOOM will be available for download on Xbox Live Arcade today for 800 MS points ($10 US). The game will include the full, four-chapter single player game. Co-op and deathmatch modes will be available via split screen or online via Xbox Live.Coming soon will be Sensible World of Soccer, based on the 1994 Amiga title of the same name. The game will allow you to play with the original graphics or an "updated, high-resolution look and feel."
No word yet on a ranking system. Scott Henson, Director of the Game Development Group at Microsoft, did remind us that all Xbox Live titles are required to have a leaderboard. How players will be ranked, however, has yet to be determined.

It's public right now, just FYI.
ScreamingSkull @ Sep 27th 2006 2:25PM
Got any details about it? Upgraded graphics, controls??
crono141 @ Sep 27th 2006 2:40PM
Co-op is going to get SO much more play on box than it ever got on PC.
That was one of THE best things about doom, co-op play. They need LOTS more games like this.
Rim @ Sep 27th 2006 2:34PM
Best Co-Op game ever made. It's sad that even todays games dont even have Co-Op as good as this. Almost as if games are taking steps backwards.
Mark @ Sep 27th 2006 2:39PM
Wow Sensi Soccer, in it's original form!! I wasted many, many hours on this back in the day on my Amiga. (Why am I more excited about this than GoW??!).
diskoboy @ Sep 27th 2006 3:02PM
Hey MS - how bout games for people who somehow mangaed to find an XBL Vision?
Playing card games with a camera isn't really my idea of fun.
Tillman @ Sep 27th 2006 3:18PM
is the co-op mode online as well?
copres @ Sep 27th 2006 3:35PM
$10 for doom? that seems a little pricey.
Tillman @ Sep 27th 2006 3:42PM
If it were $10 for just the game DooM, single-player, Id agree.
But making multiplayer over the internet Easy with the original Doom? Totally worth it.
A couple years ago I downloaded several different Doom "Launchers" for the PC, ZDoom, and some others I cant remember, so that a buddy of mine and I could play it over the internet. It was always a hassle to get working right, and even when it did, sometimes it stopped working right. This, at least for me, makes it worth the price of admission
SickNic @ Sep 27th 2006 3:47PM
I never really played the vintage dooms that were included in Doom 3 for the original xbox. Why in the world would I pay $10 for it now?
The only thing that interests me is the online play, but that alone certainly isn't worth $10.
sepll cehck @ Sep 27th 2006 3:49PM
I just downloaded it and played it for a bit. It is really as great as I remember it. Try out the demo and see if you like it. The game is fairly long and with online co-op this game is gonna rock for quite a while..
definitely worth 10 bucks....
ScreamingSkull @ Sep 27th 2006 3:51PM
I was actually thinking about getting this to try and ease my girlfriend in to FPS's, right now she's addicted to animal crossing on the DS.
Cabcru @ Sep 27th 2006 4:30PM
Congrats to Jostiq for printing the points _and_ the dollar value. Most journos seem to assume everybody is an XBLA user already and know the conversion off by heart.

1 MSP = .0125 USD
100 MSP = $1.25
:: 800 MSP = $10
:-)

10 bucks for doom ONLINE play is a bargain. theres currently no other alternative other than lan.
Doom multiplay is one of my favorite games ever
Koekoenutt @ Sep 27th 2006 6:14PM
This is definatly a nice addition to XBox Live, Though I do think $10 IS a little pricey. Online mode or not, The game is less than 50mb big, going off of Doom Legacy + Addition .Wad files.
Good Co-op, but I found it easier back in the day to log into BBS and play Co-op, and it was always harder to find a DM client. Wish it was Doom 2, with a 2nd player start on lvl 29.
Anyways, You can easily find this game anyone, and download Doom Legacy with updated graphics and mouselook, with more than a 4+ Deathmatch. Wondering if this XBox Live version is anything similiar to the Legacy program. Hope they worked out all the bugs to.
Also, Does this Doom have the 4th Special Edition to it? Seems like you can get more bang for your buck playing this game online, on your computer.. On any old or new computer at that.
rockintom99 @ Sep 27th 2006 6:15PM
It would be the most awesome thing ever if they brought Quake (the origional) to live arcade. I used to spend hours upon hours playing that co-op with my brother.
Koekoenutt @ Sep 27th 2006 6:16PM
Not to mention that you can do 10x more with the computer version, with updated models and skins and the ability to make your own levels with EASE. Using .wad files to add in new levels and toys and music. Wondering if the XBox Live version will be able to do so. Wonderful idea like I said before, but just not such a huge game to be worth the $10. I could see $10 for the whole Doom Series.. (Doom SE + Doom 2)
joe cee @ Sep 27th 2006 6:31PM
doom 3 backwards compatibility sucked ass so m$ had to resort to this old trash? classic!
Nick James @ Sep 27th 2006 7:30PM
Anyone who's crying about this never ever played Doom 15 years ago when it first came out.
Releasing Doom on XBLA for $10 is like releasing Halo 2 on Xbox 5 or whatever for $10.
Seriously. I haven't played multiplayer online Doom in so freakin' long... I wish it was Doom 2 too.
Fuckin' LOVE Doom.
Koji @ Sep 27th 2006 11:25PM
It would be worth the 10 bucks if live handled lag a bit better.
LinkerX @ Sep 28th 2006 1:07AM
Without doom the gaming world would not be the way it is today. It is worth more then $10 as a history lesson alone.
