I like the whole Myst universe, especially the book, but I cant for the life of me figure out how they can keep a game like this fresh and interesting for several thousand people at any one time.

A lot of what makes it work is the personal vs. community thing mentioned in the interview. Each player has their own instance of all of the puzzle-heavy ages, so everyone gets a chance to go through all the puzzly goodness themselves. The exploration-heavy ages tend to be communal, so you can chat with a bigger group of players while doing the less brain-frying parts of the game.

There's the story, too, which is really kind of unique in that there aren't really any NPCs in Uru, and so the storytelling comes from the characters played by the Cyan staff. The Uru community, at least as it stands now, really stresses roleplaying as part of the immersion of the game.

There are some neat multiplayer aspects too, something I really hope they develop more as they add new content to Uru Live. There are a few sort of PvP puzzle games that can be a lot of fun; There's a sort of strange rock paper scissors type game that I never really got into, but that keeps a leaderboard of the top players in each neighborhood and neat things like that, and there's the training wall in Gahreesen, where you and your opponent each build an invisible maze sort of thing and try to solve the other's maze first.

Basically, there's plenty enough going on even as the game stands now to keep you occupied until the next update comes out. It really is a lot of fun.

I've been waiting for the full release of this game since '99 or '00 when it was still only known as "MUDPIE"... nearly had a nervous breakdown when Ubisoft pulled the plug before it even got completely out of it's Prologue beta testing.

As someone who's been playing the community driven Until Uru (http://plasma.cyanworlds.com) I have no doubt in my mind that if this is given a few months to get rolling from it's launch, then it will be a VERY successful project. I can't wait for release....

Nice interview. I've been excited about this for a while, it should be pretty cool. I don't know how long I'd do it for, but it seems neat.

Very nice article, and good interview with Rand, thanks for publishing it. Can you correct the release date, as it will be Christmas Season, NOT October 17. Thanks.

Hamsta and Chris: Thanks for pointing out the date mistake. I met with GameTap and Telltale in the same afternoon and misunderstood the Uru Live ship date.

Sooner or later all these WOW & Vanguard MMO fans are gonna get older, move out from above their parents' garage, get a college education, get a job, find a spouse, have kids, participate in community events & eventually realize they don't want their own kids being so absorbed in frag games (not as much anyway) as Dad & Mom've been in the past. They won't want to subject their kids to such a fatalistic gaming experience.

So I think Rand & Cyan are way ahead of their time in at least this aspect.

Thank you Rand and thank you joystiq for this very interesting and much welcomed interview.

I have been a Myst fan since 1993 having played it with my twin grandsons, (one one each knee) when they were only 5 years old. We played all the Myst games up to UruLive prologue. As teenagers they went on to play the shooter games like most teens.

Since UbiSoft shut the door on UruLive, it's been my dream to see it return. I see my dream coming true and I envision the day when my grandsons will return and join me to once again explore the marvelous ages as a family.

I love both aspects of the game. I love exploring, solving puzzles and discovering new adventures. I look forward to the new release.

You and me both my friend, you and me both, I just hope it has had a slight bump graphically to keep pace with todays technology. !!!!PLEASE!!!

However if they get The Skill R’ehrehm and The Art rehgehstoy Rehgehstoy to be playable in game I woudl definitely be happy with URU quality graphics. Especially if I can play them on a basic computer and still get good frame rate and textures etc.

I wonder if this is voice chat?
I have said it before this game should be for a console. I am happy that Gametap is paying Cyan for it's work on this product but the PC gaming market is shrinking and the advertising budget for PC games is shrinking more. I hope every one hears about this game and I hope I have a job when this comes out so that I can buy it!

This is in relation to arnoldo's comment

evan know the PC market is shrinking pc's are always upgradable with new software and hardware ready for wen new titles come out and consoles in the long run lack in the MMO aspect as it was the game final fantasy online needed a hard drive upgrade for the PS2 just to play it also haveing the ability to ugrade your video card on your pc makes pc a biger graphical proformer with a console what you see is what you got any way other then that uru live with its soon to have new content makes it a must play game offering things that most games do not makeing uru live one of a kind and i well be there for that haveing played all the myst games im realy looking forward to this

In response to Arnaldo, Uru does indeed have a voice chat capability built-in. I've used it in the temporary version ("Until Uru"), and I strongly suspect that it will be an integral part of the final version, and perhaps enhanced at that. Voice chat really adds to the experience, as the avvie who's doing the speaking gestures realistically, and the voice you hear is directional.

As for the rest of the experience, I am greatly anticipating the release of Uru Live! I was one of the many who were dismayed when Cyan's first attempt at a Live Uru was cancelled, and have followed the progress of Cyan and the Uru community with great interest. It was a great pleasure to visit Cyan in July and meet with many of the folks there. They are exceptional people, and I wish them all success with this new venture!

Thanks for a great interview,

Mowog

I've been an avid and horrifically addicted fan from the beginning. Unfortunately for people like myself, Uru was never released for the Mac. With the new Intel chips this is no longer a problem. It's been my dream to create and share ages with capable, artistic authors for many years. This is most definitely a dream come true!

What a wonderful interview, Rand and Mark! Your descriptions of what is to come, especially regarding age writing, will keep me counting the days until the grand opening!
