Ridiculous "black 360" with ridiculously cute cat [update 1]

This "black 360" crap is really getting silly. That's a test kit that my cute-ass cat is pwning. Nothing more.
Yes, we'd love to see a black 360. We'd also love to see an orange one. And a green one. And a pink one. Eventually, these things may come. But the black 360 hooked up to a Samsung monitor is nothing more than a test kit.
Can we move on now?
[Update 1: posted another photo of a cute cat with the same type of Xbox 360 debug/test/review kit after the page break. Thanks, Dan!]

my cat is totally more awesome than your cat. my cat talks on my headset if I set the controller down. and he's siamese to boot. and he chews through ethernet cables like nothing, so I had to go wireless.
actually, maybe your cat _is_ better than my cat.

More attention is on the Black 360 than the PS3 right now. Thats seriously not good for sony.
4th dimension king @ Sep 28th 2006 12:28AM
Holy Flat Black Batman!
g0d damn that looks awesome.
josh @ Sep 28th 2006 12:29AM
more attention is on the cat then the black 360.
Amos @ Sep 28th 2006 12:29AM
I wants me some test kits...
And possibly some cats. Damn you viral marketing.
hoob @ Sep 28th 2006 12:29AM
You know, if you say it's getting old with all these people and their pictures of black XBox 360 test kits, why keep posting about them? Just stop altogether.
Guy- @ Sep 28th 2006 12:29AM
I’ve never seen an Xbox 360 test kit with a normal hard drive on it. As far as I know the test kits all have those big thick hard drive cases on the end with the fire wire ports.
killploki @ Sep 28th 2006 12:32AM
my cats breath smells like cat food................
Firegirl @ Sep 28th 2006 12:37AM
Just please, please, no PINK ones! The black does look totally awesome though.
kris @ Sep 28th 2006 12:39AM
They should try to take some of the market away from Sony by making a really ugly 360, At least then there'd be a choice of ugly consoles in the next generation.
vc @ Sep 28th 2006 12:41AM
Well, Guy, now you've seen one.
Infil @ Sep 28th 2006 12:50AM
Your cat is awesome.
Teri @ Sep 28th 2006 12:53AM
Guy-'s right.
The Debug (test) kits are white with non-detachable internal hard drives. The Dev kits are black. That's not a test kit or a Dev kit...but it is probably just a 360 with a custom latex paint job.
troll @ Sep 28th 2006 12:55AM
MS just copying PS3.
What's all the excitement about?
Aaron @ Sep 28th 2006 12:57AM
would it be impossible to powder coat paint this thing black? i mean im sure its not unheard of to paint these things
hoorj @ Sep 28th 2006 12:58AM
Teri, you're wrong. Guy's wrong. You don't think Joystiq was sent test kits to run pre-release code?
Brandon @ Sep 28th 2006 12:58AM
Yeah, it looks cool, but I like the white just a little better. It certain stands out in your mind since as of now, it is really the only white thing around your entertainment center (note: your iPod is not a part of your entertainment center). Plus the fact that the tray isn't chrmoed makes it look like an incomplete design. I realize that the core white 360's also didn't have chrome DVD trays and I think the same thing about their design. Without the chrome, or some other way to make it stand out, it just lacks an element of design.
I like the textured look to it, which must be latex paint if the Teri really knows their paint. In a way it looks close to the black silicone skin I have for my iPod. Now let's see MS release a blue 360 with the same paint The Llamma used. (find it at llamma.com)

JJ @ Sep 28th 2006 1:07AM
Or its a black replacement case ordered off of many sites like DEcalgirl or something.
Personally i'd want a chrome 360 case. Gaudy i know but its oh so shiny
PIpe @ Sep 28th 2006 1:12AM
Thats some real shit, i just bought my 360 a few days before i hear for the first time about this rumor. the black 360 looks really sweet, if its true i'll just have to sell it. good thing i could get around $410 for it, even though i only paid $347.15 total and yes its a premium version.
ill trooper @ Sep 28th 2006 1:12AM
Looks like an electric razor. Powdercoating it black is a good idea, then it would be high gloss, like the system from XXXX called the XX3, you know what I mean... Now THAT is a tough looking box, but not trying to start arguments here, just my own opinion.
Problem is I don't if you can powdercoat plastic like this, it's a baking process usually done on metal, and while they do have powdercoating for wood, I think plastic might warp and deform in the final heat which 'skins' (melts/hardens' the powder into the final finish.
Anyway. The effect could likely be done with high-gloss paint as well, but the 360 does have a molded-matte surface, so you'd have to lay down some thick layers...
Teri @ Sep 28th 2006 1:17AM
The test and dev kits both have non-detachable "sidecar" mounts containing the hard drive. And as for painting a 360? We're not really talking about something profound here. Just google "Xbox 360" and gaze upon the variety of 360 case mods that come up. Black paint? ::shrugs:: Not that special.
Agrajag @ Sep 28th 2006 1:22AM
Wow. I call out animal cruelty! That thing could overheat any minute!
vc @ Sep 28th 2006 1:25AM
Teri, you're wrong. You may work in QA, and the test kits YOU use may be white, but this is a test kit sent to the media prior to console launch. It's been in our possession since three days before launch. It came in this box:
http://img.engadget.com/common/images/3060000000054337.GIF?0.1028748071970414
Don't be so stubborn. You need me to boot it up for you?
vc @ Sep 28th 2006 1:30AM
Technically, it's a "reviewer kit" which may be the source of your confusion.
Lee @ Sep 28th 2006 1:30AM
Damn, all this talk about a black 360 and VC (or his cat) has been sitting on one the whole time.
I always knew you were holding out on us.
/sarcasm

samfish @ Sep 28th 2006 1:40AM
Hey, is that a Korat?
That's what mine is. You can get some serious bank off of thier kittens if you can breed them pure.
http://www.koratworld.com/home.html
vc @ Sep 28th 2006 1:42AM
Hey Samfish -- it's a solid blue Tonkinese actually. Korats are perty! We looked at those, but went with Tonk because they have a more outgoing personality.
Cyde @ Sep 28th 2006 1:44AM
Meh, who gives a shit what color the console is anyway? How often do you look at your console? Mine's tucked away in a console beneath my TV. If the hard drive was 25% bigger or something that might be newsworthy, but who cares what color the outside is?
l3ftonm3 @ Sep 28th 2006 2:12AM
they should make some camo 360's. Or possibly release a halo3 edition 360. Onyx black and change the ring color to blue, with the dvd tray being chromed. Or my favorite a copper colored 360, that would be awesome.
Sagev Sal @ Sep 28th 2006 2:20AM
Can you move on?
If you're tired of the black 360 stuff, then stop posting about it. Or does somebody's boss have them whipped ;)

If Microsoft starts offering a free kitten with a 360, I'd finally buy one. A kitten and Geometry Wars is worth $400.

Teri @ Sep 28th 2006 2:39AM
::shrugs again:: You can boot it up if you want. Whether it's a "reviewer kit" or a retail with a new coat of paint is impossible to tell from a picture. They'd be virtually identical.
Point is, whether it's one or the other, that means it's not authentic.
And besides, who said I work in QA? ;)
ShockWave @ Sep 28th 2006 3:22AM
There are two black 360's
1. XBox360 Development kit - is black and haves a non-removeable hard drive , the hard drive is also bigger than the retail cause developers first test the game from it and then test it on DVD9
2. XBox360 Reviewer or Test Kit - is black and haves a retail removeable hard drive , this console is not different in hardware is only different in color.
Keith L. Dick @ Sep 28th 2006 3:23AM
Cat is cool, I could care less about the color of a *Box* that I will only look at when I pop a CD/DVD in...
Tom @ Sep 28th 2006 4:22AM
"A kitten and Geometry Wars is worth $400" ~ Oro
If you're willing to buy then I'm sure they're willing to sell, though you should know the MSRP on a kitten-geometry combo is actually $312...so the Games Division at Microsoft might finally start turning a profit.

You're kidding me, Tom... all of the Xbox 360 bundles that come with matching cat in my area run at least $800. I've heard rumors of an upcoming flame point model with Persian that runs up to $2000, though.

Yeah, let's move on. We gamers have no control whatsoever over what these big corporate gaming companies will do. Isn't that right, Sam and Max?
