I've read over that quote a few times, and don't see anywhere where Reggie hints at the fact that this is an 'unprecented', new or unique thing to do.

A little clarification, Joystiq crew, would be appreciated. This post makes absolutely no sense.

Oh oh, the NDF is out in numbers! I better edit this down, stat!

When he says, "You know what" it's got that ring of, "ready yourself for some amazing news."

It's expected, not special, and it's made to sound special. The fact that GameSpot and other media are picking it up as if it's special reinforces our reading of the situation.

I won't get into the 'news-worthiness' regarding the post. (I've only got two stars and if one gets taken away, the other will be lonely). However, I read the news article on AP or something this morning. It actually made me think about taking Nov 19th off and making the quick flight from Chicago to NYC to camp out for a while. I mean c'mon, who wouldn't want a chance to meet a guy with the nickname of 'Regginator'.

So what if he's copying one fairly insignificant p.r. stunt? Isn't it better than copying say, the idea for a new controller? And it is new. I didn't know he would be there, did you? So that's news right? Oh man, Bush is totally copying Eisenhower. Russia copied the U.S. by making nukes. Valdimir copied anyone who ever wrote non-sensical drivel. See what I mean? It's all relative. You could say that Sony and Microsoft are copying Nintendo by even making video games in the first place, and that anything Nintendo does is copying the copiers, thus copying themselves and now not only does the word "copy" not make sense anymore but the entire space-time continuum is in danger of implosion. Shame on you for endangering the universe, Vladimir. For shame.

hang on a sec, so when one company does something it's news and when another company does it it's not. how many products when launched have representatives handing over the product on launch day? it's a PR stunt and like you said the media is making a big deal out of it, so what?

what really bothers me is the context that Joystiq is taking. i fail to see what part Reggie has said "we do what nobody else has done before".

so what's your beef Joystiq? are you implying they shouldn't do it? or are you saying they should do it because others before them have, and they shouldn't mention it because it's nothing special?

i don't expect impartial news from a blog, but twisting stories like this one appears to have been is worrying.
When he says, "You know what" it's got that ring of, "ready yourself for some amazing news.".
So this post is because he said "You know what" in a tone to imply they were doing something "unprecedented". How did you get that tone from a written quote.

We've all read the post many times by now and it's pretty clear it's a stinker. It's posts like these that make me wish Joystiq would just admit fault, rather than shouting "it's the fanboys, head for the hills the fanboys are coming" as a defence.

You guys totally missed the poiunt. Reggie never said it was unprecedented. Vlad said "Unprecedented" in a sarcastic manner. The post was about how this PR move is not nearly as unique as other news outlets are making it seem. Mainstream news is treating this like the first time it has ever happened and Vlad is simply pointing out that it's not and posing a public question, "Why is this being treated like something new and substantial?"

Ugh... Vlad, this is getting tiresome.

Of course it's a PR stunt, which, by the very nature of being a PR stunt will gather press. It will always make the news when a highly paid top brass exec takes a position behind the register (or wherever) and meets the masses. It becomes more than just a chance to buy an item, it becomes a chance to meet a (pseudo)celebrity.

Can you please show me, ANYWHERE, where anybody states that this was creative, new, or original? I don't see the writers you attack stating that it was a new idea either. They are just reporting a story. Why is it a big story? Because Reggie is a big personality in video games... now gamergeek can meet this otherwise unapproachable person.

Things don't have to be new or creative to be exciting or news worthy. They just have to carry interest.

Let's carry this to an extreme: If a major politician, a presidential candidate came to your town, hosting a little meet-n-greet/kiss the babys sort of thing do you think it would make the news? Its as overdone as anything can be, they've been doing it for literally hundreds of years. Yet I distinctly remember George Bush's 'Whistle Stop Tour' of California being a big deal with a huge turnout.

Am I saying Reggie is as big a personality as the president? Of course not, but he IS interesting to more than a few folks out there, which makes him newsworthy.

Vlad, (and other Joystiq editors) have you noticed how many times you have to update your posts to clarify your 'true' meaning? Do you realize that you are attempting to attack something as a non-story... with your OWN story? I am really getting tired of these half assed, poorly conceived editorials coming from Joystiq. I really am starting to think that it's just a way to push action on the site, and I usually don't bite on such conspiracy theories.

Here's the deal. Vlad is a full on Wii hater. He has stated privately (to people who have talked about it publicly on podcasts) that the Wii is a gimmick and that it is going to fail miserably.

So all of his Wii "articles" should be taken with a grain of salt.

Back on this topic, I think it IS actually news that the president of NOA is going to be handing out launch units. Regardless of whether it has been done before, it is still pretty cool.

"What really bothers us (and what prompted this post) is that this is making headlines at all. What gives? At the very least, these writers should be providing context for the news. This years-old maneuver shouldn't be making headlines."

Yes. It shoudln't have made headlines, so we all decided to write a lengthy blog post about it! Because, as we all know, nothing kills a headline faster than posting it to one the most visited gaming blogs on the Net!

Joystiq, and some its writers specifically, are in this weird limbo lately. Honestly. It's like a cross between not having enough to write about, a desire to appear as though they aren't "pro-[console here]" and against another, and a spinkling of gross self-importance. This post just baffles the mind, as it goes beyond the usual 'i'm bored on a friday i need something to write about' schlock into something even stranger entirely.

How is it that all of the Vlad bashers missed the entire point of his post? He took the reporters to task for not providing context when they reported the story, not Reggie for the PR stunt. The PR stunt he readily admits is par for the course.

I realize that many of the Wii lovers here are very young, but reading comprehension should have been mastered by the time you got to junior high. I realize that with two major console launches just weeks away, fanboyism is running at an all time high, but everyone needs to take a deep breath and relax a little.

Nowhere in the article does it say that this is unprecedented.

Going by Vlad's curious logic, it shouldnt be a headline when Sony releases a new console, since, meh, its already been done before...
