As a member of the Apple Defense Force, I must stand up for my comrads and say we fight the best fight.
Death to the Microsoft Infidel.
Jay @ Oct 1st 2006 8:40AM
Funny. I bought one of those fancy shmancy new iMacs the other day. Very powerful machine for it's price (£750). cannot fault it. It's even got 2 of my Apple hating mates desperate to buy one, mostly for the Windows dual boot, the incredible all-in-one design, the utter silence of the machine and the iLife suite. Apple's best move was moving to Intel chips.
shit I've lost the point... it was something about buying a new iMac and using my Dell monitor for an extended display but with my NES not working with it. yea.
Sami @ Oct 1st 2006 8:54AM
Funny, but where is the Sony Defence Force? They're really putting up a fight these days when they're not sure about winning anymore.
Exbzurg @ Oct 1st 2006 8:55AM
wow first 2 posts were apple fans, you nintendo fanboys better step up and defend your honor!
LP @ Oct 1st 2006 8:57AM

I'm not an Apple fan. I'm an Apple user, with a dual boot to XP for the only thing OSX doesn't give me - games. Which, incidentally, got its first virus 6 hours in.
Tsk @ Oct 1st 2006 9:00AM
Vlad,
This is becoming very stupid indeed, you need to get your head outta your ass and stop posting all this pseudo-psychological nonsense that is only meant to push your fat head even further up your rectum while trolling for comments on the sly.
Intangible 360 @ Oct 1st 2006 9:10AM
At least this graph was done correctly, unlike the previous one.

Psaakyrn @ Oct 1st 2006 9:23AM
Bah. The NDF might be too poor to afford a proper website, but they still have the overall mindshare via word-of-mouth.
(note: I am not a member of the NDF. Really. Now can you get the red pointer of my forehead?)
Gerwurztraminer @ Oct 1st 2006 9:38AM
Well, at least this graph is monochromatic so it doesn't *confuse* anyone.
Mikelx215 @ Oct 1st 2006 10:06AM
Yeah... that's not funny Vlad. It seems like all you do now a days is make fun of this alleged Nintendo Defense Force. I don't think that you're earning much respect for this. I'd suggest you report on other things for a while.
Kenny_Banya @ Oct 1st 2006 10:08AM
Keep blaming on this "NDF" for having awful feedback on your 12 aged dumb posts, VC. That will help. U're 12, right? (at least mentally)
Lekko @ Oct 1st 2006 10:53AM
whereas the Microsoft defense force seems to pretty much everyone nowadays...
However, when you get to majority status (at least in the U.S.), it's not defense anymore, but supporters.
gamesarefun @ Oct 1st 2006 10:57AM
and what was the point of this post? i guess that dud is trying to be funny. I do like NDF. But maybe there should be some symetry on dissing all the fanboys for the 3 systems since they all troll on this site?
someone else shoulda got the axe instead of the other guy. i come to joystiq for good news, posts, and interesting debate. not garbage, zoolander.
Moogle @ Oct 1st 2006 11:07AM
I don't think the NDF is has been putting up much of a fight the past few months. Seriously, why fight when the battles so clearly already won?
Maybe it's complacency, maybe we're just basking in the glory.
*waves NDF flag*
John @ Oct 1st 2006 11:12AM
What are with these stupid graphs that mean nothing.
Enough of that idiocy.
"Nintendo defense force" Yea okay.
Raxephon @ Oct 1st 2006 11:16AM
Can't get NDF out of your head, don't you vc?
It seems you had some traumatic experience with them XD.
Joystiq should left this kind of news (fanboy-ism/bashing) before it's too late... IMO of course.
If not at least your site can still make money because of Defence Forces barging to your site, seeking wars lol.
Steve Roger @ Oct 1st 2006 11:51AM
I guess I just don't get what's funny about mentioning the Iraqi defense force. The Iraqis are paying a huge price for our intervention. They paid a huge price for under Saddam. We've got Americans dying over there. This just is not funny to me. I am not trying to nasty to anyone. I am just really uncomfortable with this type of humour.
rautiocination @ Oct 1st 2006 11:53AM
Clearly someone thinks the only thing a graph needs is straight lines and to be drawn on lined paper.
A bar graph typically has no progression along one axis . You have labeled the axes in a way which means they represent the SAME THING: measuring how extreme specific "defence forces" are.
To correct it, label the x (horizontal axis) "specific groups which I childishly take issue with" and the y axis "excitement of coming products which I choose to perceive as blind, rabid fanboyism"
Y'know, I always preferred joystiq to kotaku before this . . . this may have just pushed me over. If you have an _opinion_, write a goddamn article, don't spend 3 seconds creating something which doesn't even make sense then expect people to accept it.
serbz @ Oct 1st 2006 11:53AM
its funny how the NDF our now after VC
Ian @ Oct 1st 2006 11:55AM
Yeah Nintendo fanboys get way to defensive. Just like Sony fanboys. Their only hurting themselves from playing good games, but if they would rather play Killzone over Halo then thats their choice. Its a fact, fanboys hurt the industry.
Jeremy @ Oct 1st 2006 11:56AM
I agree that Nintendo's fanboys are the worst. I grew up on Nintendo and they are my company of choice, but I don't consider myself one of the fanatic/extremists that you see prevalent on the net.
If you watch Digg for example any realistic negative press about Nintendo is marked as innacurate even when it's true, and the comments get down right nasty. Anti-anything else they boost to front page whether it's true or not.
I think this has to do with the fact that many Nintendo fanboys are just that, boys.
Joe Mama @ Oct 1st 2006 12:03PM

"6. I'm not an Apple fan. I'm an Apple user, with a dual boot to XP for the only thing OSX doesn't give me - games. Which, incidentally, got its first virus 6 hours in."
I've been running XP since it came out, and I've never suffered infection or intrusion by a worm, virus, or hacker. Safe surfing and proper security software virtually eliminates the threat. There's a reason Apples are "safer" -- hackers don't bother with them because they're such a niche market. Once Apple OS software hits a certain critical mass, it will be no different than XP.

here vlad, this might help you the next time you have a puerile, non-fact driven point you want to illustrate through an arbitrary bar graph: http://cstl.syr.edu/FIPSE/TabBar/BuildBar/BUILDBAR.HTM
The ZeroCorpse @ Oct 1st 2006 1:46PM
That whole "nobody makes viruses for Apple because they're a niche market" meme is utter bullshout. Hackers don't make viruses, worms, and trojans to affect the majority- They do it for attention and to prove their programming skills. Don't you think that the first hacker to actually bust into OS X would be pretty damned FAMOUS for doing it?
So far the only one who managed to do anything close to hacking OS X was only able to do it when given a profile on the Mac, and allowed basic access by the guy running the experiment. If he hadn't been let in the front door, he wouldn't have gotten ANYWHERE.
The only people who say "it's because there are fewer Macs" are people who have never used OS X for any decent length of time. *NOTHING* gets into a Mac without asking for administrator's permission. Nothing is installed without administrator's permission. Nothing can affect any of the system files without administrator permission. Really- the only way you can get a virus or malware on a Mac is if you are REALLY stupid and give permission to the program when it asks to infect your Mac.
As for this "niche" thing- I don't think XPDF members have any idea how many Macs are out there. 20% of all computers in use today are Macs. That's no small number.
"Apple's market share is greater than that of Sony televisions, Tag Heuer watches, and the COMBINED shares of ALL European passenger cars sold in the U.S., including Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, and Porsche." (Appliance Manufacturer & Market DataBook of Automotive News)
There are MILLIONS of Macs out there. Apple has sold over a million Macs this year alone. So please- stop pretending that there are only a hundred of us out here. The Mac has a longer lifespan, so it's not replaced as often as a Dell or Compaq, but even so, 1 out of every 20 computers sold is a Mac. That may not sound like a lot, but when you consider how many millions of people buy computers every year, that comes out to a lot of Mac owners.
This myth that Macs are rare in the real world is ridiculous.
hey you, pickachu! @ Oct 1st 2006 1:48PM
Nintendo fanboys are by far the worst of any fanboys ever to come with a company.
I've never seen such a bunch of rabid, lying, stupid, blind, hypocrites to ever have existed for one purpose: Love Nintendo.
They don’t care one bit about themselves, as long as Nintendo is happy, they don’t care if they aren’t getting value for money, fun, or in fact, gaming of any kind.
Just ask nintendo fanboys how long it’s been since they had a good game come out on gamecube? It’s been about year and half since re4 came out. Just imagine from then to now what the hell these fanboys have to do? Lol, that’s how bad it is.
All they can do is come to sites and chat shit about other companies, talk about how they loveeee Nintendo and look longingly to the future, that maybe Nintendo might actually put games on their next system.
Ever wondered why their seems to be so many of them when their consoles sell so little? They just aren’t got nothing to play. Why do you think that games like new Mario bothers which is the same as it was 20 years ago sells so well. Why do you think they will tell you BRAIN AGE is a classic. You just imagine that’s all you have, and the gamecube for a console? Exactly. There isn’t nothing to play, this is why they are so rabid, they haven’t got shit to play, so it makes them even more rabid, they have to dig deeper and deeper to convince themselves why they love Nintendo, its not pretty a sight. Its why you have them screaming on boards “I broke my 17th ps2” Why else do you think Ms and Sony fans seems so small and less rabid in comparison? Because most of them are either playing their ps2 which still receives loads of games and loads of good ones at that, and ms fanboys have next gen right now. They haven’t got time to chat shit on boards about other companies. They are playing games, its something most Nintendo fan boys haven’t done in a year.
No, Nintendo fanboys, they have nothing to play right now until "new gen" comes out. (read new gen is actually rip off gen, where Nintendo try to squeeze everything out of their fanboys this generation, giving them 20 year old tech, but hey, Nintendo fanboys love old technology? haven’t you seen the DS?)
Worst is their lying and hypocrisy. Remember N64? Remember snes? Remember how they touted how having better graphics was great. In fact with the snes, it was just the fact it could display more colors that was great. How they said *that* even improved gaming? Remember the emphasis on multiplayer gaming and how they loved that too?
Now look at them. They are quick to tell you that consumers (and themselves) don’t care about graphics and they are quick to tell you that the fact that no 3rd party game will have online until well after 2007 (remember ninetdno fanboys, the developers don’t get the dev kits with online on them till 2007, not that online games wont come out till 2007)
Have you noticed how people now say games are "multi format" yet it doesn’t even have the wii or Gamecube versions? Eg assasins creed, team fortress 2, resident evil 5, Portal etc. They have been phased out of good 3rd party gaming and they don’t even realize it.
So when Nintendo losses they start making up facts, "yeah sony has only sold 50 million ps2 and ps1 and the rest are waiting in store rooms, whereas Nintendo, the most consumer orientated company on earth greatly underestimates figures" or "xbox360 are only doing this well because people are getting 10 replacements each".
But hey what can I say; someone has to make the other fanboys laugh? So cheers Nintendo idiots, at least you give me great enjoyment, your comments are hilarious, that’s why I love this site. So many accumulate hear im bound to get a few laughs a day here. Hey, and yeah you keep hating on VC, seeing as he has a job on your favorite blog? That makes lots of sense,” lets keep generating hits so that the company has no reason to fire him” that makes SO MUCH sense. Lol.

I think it's funny how the graph was made incorrectly, but is trying to be all "cool". I also think it's funny that "hey you, pikachu" complained that Nintendo fanboys spend all their time replying to internet posts and not playing games, when his own response is the most long-winded here.

I don't think that's the case. What it looks like to me is a humourours diagram meant to provoke fanboys. The graph itself has no statistical value and is not based on any hard data at all.
It's a joke.
And what is with all the people writing nasty comments about Vlad? If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. It's amazing that I'd have to bring up this rule that we teach to elementary schoolkids in a blog filled with 16-40 year olds. Grow up. It would have only taken a second to scroll past Vlad's post on the Joystiq homepage, yet people come here and complain about it being a waste of time.

That's funny, I've never heard them say anything about consumers not caring about graphics. What I have heard them say is that graphics are *less important* than they are made out to be.
And I won't pretend they weren't disappointed with no online till 2007. Still, it's just something else to live with. Kinda like a console starting at five Benjamins.

The Wii has only four launch window titles published by Nintendo. What was that about third parties?

Except that it made no sense even then. If we're not allowed to say anything not nice, that pretty much eliminates all negative criticism, ever.

Hey, Zero - regarding your comment:
"Really- the only way you can get a virus or malware on a Mac is if you are REALLY stupid and give permission to the program when it asks to infect your Mac."
The problem I've seen with 98 and XP is simple. You go surf the net, and some pop-up comes up that says your computer is running slow, click here to speed your system up.
Joe Average consumer, who is NOT smart enough to buy a Mac because he just went for the $400 eMachine system at Best Buy since it was cheap, clicks. Lo - and spyware, adware, and other assorted goodies then flood his machine. (That's one reason I kept the machines my kids used when they were younger off the same network as the machines my wife and I use - I'd average six hours per month cleaning it up and getting it running again.)
Microsoft software runs about 95% of all home computers in the world - you really can't argue with that number because it's true. Mac users - and I do know several of them - also tend to be more educated and/or more job specialty required to get a Mac. I also agree with Epic - if you use some common sense - AV software, etc., then you probably also won't get a virus running XP, either. Granted, my personal machine is behind a firewall with assorted goodies running on it to keep it clean - the point is that they work.
The primary cause of virus infections and spread goes back to the idiot that clicked on that e-mail that he shouldn't have - sort of like that TV commercial shows where the guy melts his whole office down.

Well, at the very least, Joystiq commenters are a fickle bunch. When you praise Nintendo, the opposition fills the comments section with 'omfg fanboyismmmmm'. So you make a joke about Nintendos supporters (which, I will agree, Nintendo fans are a bit more hardcore than the others), and the everyone fills the comments section with the exact same damn thing.
The reason WHY Nintendo has such a loyal fanbase is because of *history*. There are those of you out there who can argue that sony/xbox are blah blah blah awsomeness, but Nintendos been in the damn market for a really long stretch of time, and has earned (well earned) the respect and fanbase that it has.
The most commonly seen (at least among everyone I know up here in Peterborough, Ontario) 16/32bit era console is the SNES. People still have some of their old games kicking around for it, and Ive still got friends firing up Mario Kart and Super Mario World all the time.
Theres a reason for that. Just like he-man, they have the power.

Well said, Komrade Kayce from Msg #46.
For those who've forgotten, none of us would probably be playing ANY videogames right now if it wasn't for Nintendo stepping in in the mid-1980's.
Could you FATHOM a time when gamesystems were shunned by TOYSTORES??? Toystores now. Nobody wanted them because they were seen a passed-by fad/bad financial risk. Gaming at best would've been relegated to home computers & would NOT have had the cultural impact it has now. It would be a hobbyist endeavor practiced by a VERY niche group of people. Remember consoles are nothing more than game-centric computers. Consoles may have died in the mid-1980's as everyone was beginning to ghead toward computers for gaming & other things.
The industry almost died in America & Nintendo's way of doing business SAVED it. Sega wasn't going to be able to do that & if Nintendo didn't show up Sega wouldn't even be the competitor we knew them to be.
Since the Famicom/NES all others have been trying to dethrone the king of the hill. And that's Nintendo. Graphics upgrades & features additions. All this was/is designed to uproot the true leader. Nintendo's existence is WHY the competition does what it does & has done.
To this very day the WHOLE INDUSTRY *STILL* rests on Nintendo's shoulders. Sony nor Microsoft run this business in reality. Nintendo is the engine that keeps gaming alive & moves it forward still today. Competitors enrich the scene, that's true, but if Nintendo was not here I guarantee you gaming would slowly die out as a pastime as we know it today.
That's why virutally everything Nintendo does in regards to the gaming experience becomes standard. From business practices to gameplay to interface. That's why they are able to go left when everybody else goes right. It's because they are the TRUE leaders of the industry. Leaders tend not to follow crowds or trends & do things their own way.
Those who know history & are older than their teens will recognize this. I remember gaming BEFORE Nintendo. 30 years on the planet & have seen this industry almost since the beginnings. I KNOW what Nintendo has brought to this industry & am appreciative for what they still continue to do.
Think about it. After the universal success of the NES why didn't the Nintendo go up on price after owning about 90% of the market? Everyone does that after a measure of success. Why does Nintendo INSIST on making sturdy quality products that can withstand the greatest abuse even to that of SCUD missiles (Google the Gulf War I GameBoy story)? Others don't put as much into making their products as durable so why does Nintendo? Why is Nintendo as a developer consistently for nearly 30 years the best in the business? There ARE no BAD Nintendo games. Why is that? Why do people assume them to be the ones who give quality & affordability while giving everyone else a free pass in regards to these things?
Why is their customer service renowned in the business?
I hear that common refrain that all business only care about money. That's garbage. Of course money's important. To everybody here. That's why your relgious officials keep asking for donations.
But no it's MORE than that with Nintendo. Because if it wasn't they would cut corners & get lazy with what they do. They have pride in their creations & respect for their buyers. Seeing as Sony is the current console leader not nearly as diligent in making their products quality & how people don't seem to mind this...Nintendo should therefore follow the crowd & become like them. But they don't.
It's like your local neighborhood small business. They bake cakes. And when they make a cake there's a lot of care & concern for what goes into it & how the customer will accept it. They don't just slap together any old thing to make a quick buck. And if you ever accused them of doing this it would be like you shot a arrow right through their heart. They would take personal offense because they care about what they do.
That's Nintendo, folks.
They've owned the handheld market ever since the Game & Watch. A damn near monopoly for the great majority of those years. YET they continued to put out quality products that no one has been able to match YET. WITHOUT real competition I might add before the PSP came along. How do you think that more powerful better featured systems like the Sega Game Gear & Atari Lynx all fell to a simple black & white screened system called the Game Boy. And it stayed B&W for 9 damn years before finally making the jump to color! What does that tell you?
You know realizing what Nintendo means to this business it honestly makes me wonder why everyone is *NOT* a Nintendo fan. At the very least respect them for what they have done & continue to do for this pastime we love so much.
I truly believe that people won't know what they miss until it's gone.
Nintendo is like the parents you didn't appreciate as a kid only recognizing their value in retrospect. Only AFTER you moved out do you finally understand.
