HD era arrives, nobody tells Microsoft South Africa

Not content with merely launching the Xbox 360 in local game stores, the South African and somewhat fidgety arm of Microsoft also shoved the next-gen console into the spotlight at rAge -- that's a really awesome acronym for "Really Awesome Gaming Event." The annual show provides a rare opportunity for South African gamers to gather en masse, play games, discuss trends, purchase goods and generally complain about ineffectual airconditioning. What better place to erect snazzy stands and lure uncertain gamers into a nexus of high-definition visuals and inescapable green lighting? Indeed, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to convince uncertain gamers as to the overwhelming and decidedly monstrous power of the Xbox 360.
Perhaps it was the fuzzy graphics, odd aspect ratios and the indecipherable text that gave it away, but it became abundantly clear that those lovely HD visuals were being strangled by a hissing composite cable. A quick inspection of all the consoles revealed a disturbing truth -- Core systems running at a paltry 480i, the mistake magnified for all to see on Samsung LCD screens. Stranger still was the fact that neighboring booths managed to get it right. Both EA and a prominent local distributor had correctly configured Xbox 360s, showing more adherence to the ubiquitous HD marketing than even Microsoft themselves. How did that happen?

We spoke to several people involved with the distribution of the console, all of them pointing the blaming finger at an amorphous "miscommunication." It seems that Core systems were deemed suitable for the show and were promptly sent out to the organizers -- the fact that the Xbox 360 Core does not contain HD AV cables was apparently overlooked until it was too late. Thankfully, one brave man made the connection and, in the final moments of the first day of the expo, arrived with a collection of VGA cables and rescued several (but not all) consoles from standard definition peril. The resolution (OOF!) came a bit late, but it certainly defused some of the embarassment that would have been an entire weekend of non-HD HD gaming.

microsoft be fuckin up!
Robo Saru @ Oct 3rd 2006 9:02PM
But, I thought the HD cable and the SD cable were the same, with a little switch to change the type - right?
quicksilverzxc @ Oct 3rd 2006 9:02PM
But compared to the PS2 which is all the South Africans had until now, the 360's 480i output was probably just fine to wow them. While it would've obviously been better to have true HD for all, it probably wouldn't have mattered until they compared the graphics to the PS3 a year or so down the road...

the core comes with the regular av cables only. the premium comes with both and it has the switch to change it from sd to hd on the plug. simple mistake and they fixed it. funny none the less
Izuna Drop @ Oct 3rd 2006 9:11PM
That was a stupid oversight. You would think they would have had better prepared for the event... especially when they are touting HD. It's especially embarassing that no one recognized that the core system didn't have the HD cables.

Argh! The Irony!!!

Wow. All I can really say.
charlesv @ Oct 3rd 2006 11:28PM
My brother lived in japan at the time of the 360 launch and had a very similar story. I believe it had more to do with misconfiguration of the tv itself than the xbox, but seriously this shit makes it hard to take these players seriously.
SuicideNinja @ Oct 3rd 2006 11:32PM
Being okay with standard definition? Not over composite.
While 360 gaming on Standard Definition can be acceptable with component cables, it really sucks with composite.
I brought Dead Rising to a friend's house yesterday (he's a poor family man, so SDTV for him). Ick...it didn't even seem like the same game. It looked decent, but you couldn't see the detail on anything.
This is a big goof on MS's part.
the_game_master @ Oct 4th 2006 6:00AM
480i isn't HD at all.
Its the highest SDTV picture you can get off a non HD television set and that can be achieved through the use of component cable. Not S-Video, Composite, or RF.
Greg2k @ Oct 4th 2006 7:46AM
To see people actually correcting a mistake like this is commendable. The other day I saw 4 HD-Ready LCD screens displaying an RF input of a 1080p sattelite TV source. So this is nothing in comparison. But it's nice to see they did something about it.
the Brayn @ Oct 4th 2006 7:54AM
Actually 480i and 480p is considered EDTV (Enhanced Definition) not SD or HD. Something I find interesting about this site is that everyone that posts in threads about how great the graphics look say that graphics don't matter but then a story like this is put up and everyone makes fun of Microsoft for having lower resolution graphics running. You people need to make up your mind on if graphics matter or if they don't.
sockatume @ Oct 4th 2006 8:06AM
Brayn: Actually 480i is SDTV. Only 480p is EDTV.
Also it's perfectly okay to make fun of Microsoft in this instance, as they made a big deal of HD. Regardless of where you stand on HDTV, that's an ironic blunder.
Chris @ Oct 4th 2006 10:20AM
I think it's funny how many people have an Xbox 360 and an HDTV and think that they only need to set the switch on the cable adapter to HD. The 360 defaults to 480p when the adapter is set to HD. Many people never change the displap settings in the dashboard to 720p or 1080i. One of my friends had a 360 connected to his HDTV over 6 months and never realized what he was missing out on, when I finnally switched it to 720p for him he was amazed, and felt stupid at the same time. Maybe this post will help some of those other slow people out there realize that they are not seeing true HD from their 360.
Him @ Oct 4th 2006 10:34AM
Actually, 480i is not EDTV. It's the resolution used by all NTSC TV's. 480p is EDTV, which is by the way considered part of the HDTV standard. Wikipedia can shed some light! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDTV =)
Dead Rising a month on @ Oct 4th 2006 4:21PM
Well what a royal F-up. However, it's just lucky they didn't put CRTs in their with Dead Rising on and it's tiny text problem, that would have been the biggest mistake.
I still wonder how many people are judging the Xbox360 on either SD TVs or HD TVs but with the wrong settings. PGR3 and Dead Rising (to name but two) games look stunning on HD but just "meh" on SD.
SauRoN @ Oct 5th 2006 2:51PM
Ludwig you forgot to mention that they setup the demo consoles in airtight cases, which caused basically every console to overheat.
