PS3: Dual Shake is dead, long live Sixaxis

It's official, Sony has decided not to use our clever "Dual Shake" moniker. Instead, they've announced the final name of their (somewhat) new PS3 controller today: Sixaxis, in light of the interface's "six degrees of freedom" initiative. The dual-shock-less controller supports both wireless and USB wired connectivity, Bluetooth capabilities, and will sell in Japan for ¥5,000 ($42) on its November 11 launch.
Two additional accessories were also priced: A memory card adapter used to upload PS and PS2 data to PS3's hard drive (as expected) for ¥1,500 ($13) and a state-of-the-art Blu-ray/DVD controller for ¥3,600 ($31) for would be movie watchers. Both will be available at launch.

I will still call it the Dual Shake, thanks.
Wow, $30 more dollars for the remote. Who would buy this thing.
Mastertoad @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:37PM
Dual shake?
Want dual fries with that? afaik it was Dual Shock.
Justinq @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:37PM
Woot! PS3 is for the SUX0RS!! PWNED!
VampireHunter Z @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:39PM
Any pictures of the Blu-Ray/DVD remote?
randomshagz @ Oct 3rd 2006 4:42PM
sounds expensive
Rask @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:39PM
Man I wish they had changed the design of their controller.
After using the 360 controller for a while, the Dual-Shock feels so uncomfortable to hold and use.
Sixaxis is nice and descriptive I guess. I just hope publishers put it to good use.
Doomstalk @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:39PM
What, was Wiiknockoff taken already?
Methane47 @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:43PM
What's that? A joystiq post that isn't blatantly bashing? the PS3? OMG! lol... Except for the couple loss of rumble coments :D
Also in the news... Resistance Fall of Man and Genji were officially priced today at 5980 yen... That's 50 bucks american... Here is the link to the article.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/736/736935p1.html
That article also has other prices of games Like Armored Core will cost a whopping 8k yen..
J @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:41PM
Apparently they're calling it this 'cause the Wii-mote has 3 axis' of detection, and they think 6 would make it sound better.
iceatcs @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:41PM
Joystiq got pwned!!!
You fucking dumb - it is "DualSHOCK"
copa @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:41PM
How will a 6-D controller work with a 4-D system?
dsub @ Oct 3rd 2006 2:48PM
I have one quarrel with the PS3 controller. What do we do when the INTERNAL rechargeable batteries no longer want to charge? Look at iPods...Apple got quite a bit of grief from alot of people (including myself) when they were told they'd have to send their iPod back in to get the batteries replaced because they wouldn't hold a charge anymore?
I realize the controller would have to be used quite a bit for this to happen, but my first rechargeable battery for my 360 controller just died...thank god it's external/I have the option using AA's. What do you guys think of this? I don't think I'm the only one here who doesn't want to have to buy a brand new $50-60 controller every time my battery won't charge anymore.
niindre @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:42PM
Man Sony is making this too easy - isn't that pronounced 'sucks asses'? ;)
Rask @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:42PM
I'm officially copyrighting the term "Suxaxis"
=)
dsub @ Oct 3rd 2006 2:49PM
also...how about a PS2-PS3 controller adapter so we can still play guitar hero?
vidGuy @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:44PM
Wow, Sixaxis. At least Wii-mote isn't the official name of the Wii Remote. What every happened to the word controller?
@Mastertoad - Dual Shock was the PS2 controller. Dual Shake was the term coined for the PS3 controller - what I found interesting was it doesn't shake at all (no rumble) and you don't shake it to use it, but whatever.
With a Japanese price of 5,000yen, this will likely sell for $49.99 in the US.
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned it is a crippled PS2 controller (no rumble) with a yet to be shown/proven tilt function. At least move the left stick to its rightful position!
LaughingTarget @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:14PM
Maybe the PS3 can't play BluRay right out of the box and needs the controller, much like the original Xbox. The controller is used to pass on the lisence fees to the consumer. That or it could also have some sort of tilt functionality to use in play-back, though I can't figure out how that would work.
Caravan @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:44PM
Illiteracy is a scourge. Dual-Shake was the tongue-in-cheek suggestion made by Joystiq for the PS3 controller's name. Now, go back and read the first sentence of the post again.
Justinq @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:45PM
ICEATCS
You just got pwned and you suck! You are way behind times man. There is no "DualSHOCK" for the PS3 they got sued by immersion and won't pay to use immersions technology...therefore the controller has no vibration feedback and is now a copy of nintendo's motion feedback controller.
You are a complete dumbass!
Vincent @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:45PM
Actually, guys, they dropped the Dual SHOCK name when they lost the actual SHOCK of the Dual Shock. They changed it to Dual SHAKE cause you can SHAKE the controller, and as far as I can tell, they kept that little knockoff in there. So yes, it WAS Dual-Shock, then it WAS Dual-Shake, now its Sixaxis... woooo.
SolarDonky @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:46PM
Looks like the Sony fanbois still have a piece of crap controller for FPS.
The internal battery for the wireless controllers is Nickel Metal Hydride - aka: battery memory for shorter and shorter rounds. You will HAVE to buy a new controller at least once a year if you're an average gamer.
Not only is the battery gonna crap out soon, but the USB cable for charging WILL BE SOLD SEPARATELY!!! You cannot use AA batteries.
TO SUM UP:
- No replaceable batteries
- Comes with rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride
- USB charging cable sold separately (don't know price yet)
- Yet another crappy computer for FPS
Raynre @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:46PM
BTW, it's SIXAXIS, not Aixaxis, just like they call it the PLAYSTATION 3.
God knows I always look for a chance to yell at my friends whenever I speak to them...
vidGuy @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:47PM
Just for you people who like to claim ownage:
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/new-ps3-controller-loses-dualshock-vibration/
Raynre @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:47PM
Blah, Sixaxis. My laptop keys stick...
Pretty Obvious @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:50PM
I would take rumble over this crap any day of the week.
masterpaul @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:51PM
6 axis omg... This sucks and they let the whole world know that the Wiimote is better. Nice move Sony!
reguy @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:52PM
@doomstalk
lol thats the funniest shit i've heard in weeks
lol
ROG27 @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:52PM
Holy crap, what a bunch of xbox fanboys here...it's like a circle jerk in every freakin' PS3 blog. You should just buckle down and buy one already because you are all obviously nervous about something PS3 has to offer. Either that or you lack the emotional will-power and stability to live life without blatantly endorsing one product over another. Why don't you all apply for a job at Microsoft? Pathetic.
AK @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:54PM
The controller is not "rumble-less", nor did it "lose" the rumble feature,
it is now "rumble-free".
Get it straight guys.
Plethorin @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:54PM
Viva la Allied Wiimote!
rafa @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:57PM
Meh, I turn off the shake in most games that use it well anyway (like an FPS). Why would I want my controller shaking while I'm trying to snipe someone? It's that much better if it's not shaking. As if the shake was a good representation of anxiety.
Does anyone know if the Wii-mote shakes?
Lekko @ Oct 3rd 2006 12:59PM
Sixaxis spelled backwards is Sixaxis.
Also: they announced that the internal battery will take 30 min. to fully recharge and that it will last for 30 hours on a charge.
Sweet, I'm looking forward to this pricing model: expensive system, cheap peripherals and industry standard upgradeable parts like a standard interface HDD.
Vincent @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:00PM
@ROG27: I hate Microsoft.. so it's not EVERYONE that is a M$ fanboy. However, I hate Sony even more, and I always have, aside from their 10+year old awesome TVs.
Their DVD players suck, their game systems suck, their computers suck, their proprietary formats suck, and their new TVs suck. There is nothing good left of Sony, out of what little good they had in the first place.
As for the Sixaxis crap they're pulling, I say have your fun while you can. Cause that steaming pile of excrement isn't going to fly very far.
As for the only reason Sony has ever done well (fanboys, please read this..) Squaresoft, Enix (now Square-Enix, of course), and Konami. If it weren't for those three developers, Playstation 2 wouldn't have even come out. You've come this far only because Carts were too expensive to make games on compared to CDs.
masterpaul @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:01PM
The wii mote does shake and also has a speaker.
It also has a motion sensoring technology that the PS3 could not even dream of.
Note: That you can turn of the rumble, if you don't like it.
vidGuy @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:01PM
@ rafa,
The Wii Remote has confirmed rumble, and it is also rumored that the nunchuk features rumble (a developer mentioned it a week or so back).
anti-usa ftw @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:00PM
It is so funny to see fanboys flaming around for no reasons.
Suppose all the joystiq and xboys never will move on from "Attack on Pearl Harbor"
Most of Americans refuse Japanese products.
Same thing in Japan too,
Lotta of Japanese refuses to buy 360 because USA nuked their cities.
Jacob @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:01PM
Since no one's noticed yet, I think I should point out that SIXAXIS is a palindrome.
Me again @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:02PM
There are more changes to the controller than meets the eye also. Tweeks to sensitivity of the joysticks and buttons and also physical changes to the L2 and R2 triggers (making it badass for every game out there). Take all of these changes and the added motion sensing capabilities and what you get ... are a bunch of pissed off fanqueers who don't like sony because they either like nintendo for their kiddy games or xbox for their shitty hardware, or are too poor to buy the better of the three (PS3) !!! Man..that's alot of jealous people...LMAO !!!! Sony kick's fuckin ass...get over it !!! Once you see your friend playing a game on the PS3, you will be forced to get one !!!! Get ready to wait in line kiddies !!!!
Art Guy @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:02PM
SolarDonky - Is all that really true??? Do you have a link?
There is no way after all the other stupid stuff that Sony has done that this could be true. You have to have replaceable batteries for when it dies while playing.
reguy @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:05PM
funny that the system that calls itself fine dining cant pick up the check(Immersion)
so basically they dine and dash(ie steal)
and then kaz goes on to say that they didnt include rumble because it would be too expensive for the consumers, well thanks for looking out for me sony!!!!
oh how i love spin
Wild Homes @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:08PM
the name is cooled, it reminds me of Firaxis, and that's a good thing. after seeing the remote, I wonder if Sony put much effort into designing these things. they all look exactly like the PS2 units. ah well, I'm not going to get one for a long time. I found my price point for value and I'm going to drop whatever extra money I have into building a new PC for Vista and Crysis.
(which, by the way, no console is capable of running adequately.)
matt @ Oct 3rd 2006 10:23PM
@Lekko
Hilarious. Freakin' hilarious.
Tony @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:10PM
Art Guy, he's pulling that out of his ass. No one knows for sure yet if you will be able to replace the batteries.
By the way, all you fanboys here need to grow up.
Miniboss @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:09PM
"Suppose all the joystiq and xboys never will move on from "Attack on Pearl Harbor"
Most of Americans refuse Japanese products."
Wow. That's an amazing leap of logic you just had there. I like the 360 and I like the Wii. Does that mean I have a problem with the Russians?
Jonn @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:11PM
> 25. Holy crap, what a bunch of xbox fanboys here...it's like a circle jerk in every freakin' PS3 blog. Not very good at this "Fanboy logic" thing, are ya?
Justinq @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:10PM
Looks like microsoft has this generation of gaming in a lock. Easy win for msft!
Sony is losing all of their once 'exclusive' titles and basically has shit for titles now. There is not one great thing about the PlaySuckStation times three that will appeal to the masses.
Ringworm @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:12PM
Its only a matter of time before Sony implements a PSP redesign with touch functionallity.....
Lefty @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:13PM
its rumble-less not rumble free. and rumble is a big part of many games and a huge reason i am in no hurry to soend 500-600 on a so called next gen console. U had an input and remove and output and u call it next gen? and u could always turn rumble off but now those of us who liked and loved rumble have no wya to turn it on. So if ur one of the few who don't like rumble donlt act like every 1 of us who heloed by those 100 million ps2's feel the same. And calling us xbots for wantign rumble is freaking crazy. we have a right to be upset. And getting upset at that shows maybe sony fanboys have somethign ti be afraid of. I want my rumble (saying this as my controler shakes from crashing my car in gt3) so sad
ALH @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:19PM
sixaxis? Are they trying to make us feel even more embarassed when we go into a shop to buy this stuff? its bad enough when you say that youd like a wii :(
Vincent @ Oct 3rd 2006 1:16PM
I'm not even going to take #35 as a legitimate comment. Not only do I hate people that don't format sentences and paragraphs correctly, but I hate Sony fanboys. Note that I never directly insult Sony fanboys by calling them stupid, or spoiled, or ignorant, or anything like that. But Sony fanboys always resort to calling people names or making fun of them, because that's all they have.
They know Sony is inferior when it comes to design, quality, fun factor, etc, so they have to try to belittle the competition as much as possible. Ohh MS hardware sucks.. yeah? Your first PS2 still works? Mine does 'cause I never play it, I know too many people who have gone through 3 or 4 PS2's by now.
Nintendo games are for kids. I'm sorry but that comment can only come from someone who constantly loses to a 10 year old in Mario Kart (and other sports) and Smash Bros. If you were actually good at games like that, you'd enjoy them a lot more than anything Sony puts out.
And the being too poor to buy a PS3 comment... saying something like that is not anything to be proud of. Haw haw you can't afford the uber l33t Blu-Ray (which most fanboys actually call Blueray, LMAO.. d=...).
And the worst part is. Look how intelligently my posts have been written over the.. very long time of me posting on Joystiq. And look at what Sony fanboys spew out of their fat fingers mashing on keys and missing commas.
I think we clearly see who the victor is.
