Poll results: What genre do you enjoy most?

The votes are in, and we didn't even fudge with the electronic ballots. Though the non-scientific poll caught flack for bundling "platformers" with the action/adventure catch-all, it was for naught. The RPG genre wins with nearly one third of total reader votes. What does it all mean?
Thanks for voting, Joystiqers!

Wii will rock you!
LordMinogue @ Oct 4th 2006 4:38PM
it has to have a plot, or kick-but multiplayer. otherwise i cant take it.
32_Footsteps @ Oct 4th 2006 4:42PM
Um... the saying is "it was all for naught."
As for what it means, I think it just represents that hardcore video gamers are much more likely to play and support RPGs than non-gamers, especially when you compare sales of RPGs in general to non-RPGs.
JPRacer @ Oct 4th 2006 4:45PM
I find it hard to belive that RPGs are still that popular. 10-15 years ago RPGs were for me and my friends our favorite genre but we haven't played a RPG for 2-3 years and I don't know a sigle person that play RPGs. Except WoW but's that a MMO. Oh yeah, Oblivion is probably the only exception.
Erik Novak @ Oct 4th 2006 4:52PM
If anything, this poll shows the 360 isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
James @ Oct 4th 2006 4:53PM
I think claiming that RPG's are the overall winner is off-base. FPS werent that far behind.
Besides, did the pole make people choose their ONE favorite, or their favoriteS?
I love fps AND rpgs AND Action/Adventure (including platformers) You would forcing me to choose one, can i cant say which i would have selected - so making someone choose ONE may lead to erroneous results.
Then again, even you claim this is not scientific...
James @ Oct 4th 2006 4:55PM
" If anything, this poll shows the 360 isn't going anywhere anytime soon."
I guess your painfully unaware of the 360's lineup for the rest of the year and 2007.
Whose flacid penis do you have in your mouth? Sony's or Nintendo's? Or is it your PC's?
Toneman @ Oct 4th 2006 4:58PM
It means that people like pressing the X button over and over. RPGs take no skill, just be higher level then the monsters you fight and you win.
"What will you do?" Select attack, press X
"What attack?" Select slash, press X
"Then what?" Select win, press X
Osiris @ Oct 4th 2006 4:59PM
Just because someone may not play RPG's that often, doesn't mean that they aren't their favourite genre.
I generally love RPGs because they are the most involving, often with deep storylines, and that sense of achievement from improving your character/s.
azesino @ Oct 4th 2006 5:00PM
"Whose flacid penis do you have in your mouth? Sony's or Nintendo's? Or is it your PC's?"
Lol I like that one
otakucode @ Oct 4th 2006 5:00PM
It means that RPGs rule the WORLD, not just Japan, and Microsoft better step up with fun RPGs with TURN-BASED combat!
AoE @ Oct 4th 2006 5:32PM
Cool stuff, I'd love to see the results of an rpg specific poll too... How much crossover is there between sub-genre enthusiasts; and more importantly, which sub-genre is the most popular? I'm guessing MMO... but with the number of console gamers around here... who knows?
Gorvi @ Oct 4th 2006 5:01PM
Um, James, I believe he was saying the 360 is here to stay, not "going nowhere". Just a thought though.
Raynre @ Oct 4th 2006 5:02PM
What does it mean?
It means that, in my lifetime, Final Fantasy 42 will see the light of day.
Chris @ Oct 4th 2006 5:02PM
Only in a poll with hard core gamers would RPG win.
crono141 @ Oct 4th 2006 5:11PM

Another "slow reader day" (James)?
Reading Comprehension FTW!
Gimbal @ Oct 4th 2006 5:18PM
If the people who like FPSs also like action/adventure, then combined they outnumber the people who like RPGs.
I'm betting Ubisoft knows this.
J @ Oct 4th 2006 6:03PM
It means the target audiences of The Sims, Madden, and GTA don't visit sites like Joystiq
CJC @ Oct 4th 2006 5:26PM
Yeah, I loves me some RPGs- particularly the action/real-time variety. Less than a week until Tales of the Abyss is out.
howhow @ Oct 4th 2006 5:42PM
You know what this means??
This means that the majority of hardcore gamers (that have nothing else better to do when not playing video games), prefer rpg/1st person shooter and action adventure.
Now i have tons of friends and co-workers that would have chosen sports as their favorite. But ironically, only 3% of voters voted sports. These same friends and co-workers are not the types to frequent game blog sites let alone partake in a poll.
Personally, i enjoy keeping up wtih all the facets of video gaming and voted for RPG. But keep in mind that there are thousands (millions even) of gamers out there that just don't keep up with gaming news on blog sites.
so basically, sports would have a much bigger presence in my opinion (though i'm not a big fan of sports games myself)
Oniel @ Oct 4th 2006 5:48PM
RIP in peace fighting games can't believe that you are truely dead.
ninja @ Oct 4th 2006 6:00PM
No love for TPS? (3rd person)
Come on SOCOM fanboys! (and soon to be GoW fanboys) !!!
howhow @ Oct 4th 2006 6:05PM
#23 summed up what i was trying to say hahahah
Jeffrey Rommel @ Oct 4th 2006 6:11PM
Just a reminder, the single biggest RPG in history (and today) is not turn-based.
(see World of Warcraft, not to mention The Legend of Zelda series)
SuicideNinja @ Oct 4th 2006 8:45PM
I'm a final fantasy fan, and I'm usually that guy that levels up to 99 and gets everything in the game. Even so...I've put way more time into Halo 2 than all FF's combined...
If Ninja Gaiden and Dead Rising offered multiplayer...well..there would be a lot of time there, too.
james f. @ Oct 4th 2006 7:04PM
I think this poll means that rpg players like voting in polls on video game sites.
I mean c'mon the poll itself is like an rpg game mechanic. Almost as exciting to!
I like rpg's and turn based however stale have their place(especially when you have a serious back injury or the flu) But Oblivion totally converted me on what an rpg "should" be.
vaylen @ Oct 4th 2006 7:26PM
You know how innacurate this poll is when sports gets 3% and Madden and NCAA Football sell more units than EA can print.
rafa @ Oct 4th 2006 7:45PM
#20 hit it right on the head. This poll is only what hardcore gamers think. Hell, most of the console wars and all the bitching back and forth is only what hardcore gamers think.
Casual gamers, like most of my friends, don't read game sites. They all have 360s because of EA Sports.
Zed @ Oct 4th 2006 9:06PM
I like simulation/strategy best. Heh.
GRRiMREEAPeR @ Oct 4th 2006 9:09PM
if capcom wasnt so obsessed with next-gen games ( i love rising n lost planet btw) and got off there behind and mad quality 2d fighting games again... like mvc2, or cap vs snk... then that fighting result wouldent be as low... the only reason its so low is that us fighting game fans have been negelected for (in wat is my opinion) SUB-PAR 3d fighting games... they were never as fun, and lack the x-factor street fighter, and old school mortal kombat had. i know ittl never happen but ill even buy a ps3 if they make marvel vs capcom 3 excluesivly for it! lol and i sony.
GRRiMREEAPeR @ Oct 4th 2006 9:11PM
i loathe sony* lol long live xbox!
foobob @ Oct 4th 2006 9:22PM
Sadly, i believe this comes in the wake of WoW craze, not because people genuinely love RPGs or videogames for that matter.
I mean, many people into mass-market phenomena like WoW or The Sims are just casual gamers following the latest trends and their close friends. They enjoy the social activity behing it, not the games exactly...
gamesarefun @ Oct 4th 2006 10:09PM
uh, people who play rpgs are also the type of people go go on these messageboards to vote as they're making their way online to play some multiplayer online game. go level 60 wizard of whatever. lol
oh and let's be clear: action adventure includes 3rd person shooter games. go lost planet!!!
Tom DeFigueiredo @ Oct 10th 2006 1:21PM
It means hard core fans are are hard core fans. RPG lovers are not the idiots who play WWE and Nascar Racing games like the middle of the country. Or what I like to call hell.
Garrett @ Oct 5th 2006 2:44AM
Ah, but are those RPG votes to do with Japanese, Western or Massive?
Putting those three together is like merging sports and racing. Each is so different from the other two.
VampireHunter Z @ Oct 5th 2006 12:41PM
This poll sample is flawed big time. Sports can't be that small. If there was input from casual gamers it wouldn't only be 3%. Just look at how Madden single handedly take over the charts. I love RPGs but talk to any of my casual friends and they think it's crap.
