Wii on another holiday hot list
Toy industry trade magazine, Toy Wishes, The Reuters coverage of the Hot Dozen -- Toy Wishes hasn't published it online -- mentions that the Wii qualifies as "family entertainment," a possible reason the PS3 didn't make the cut. Toys "R" Us took a similar angle when naming only the Wii to its list, saying the PS3 is "geared to a savvy gaming enthusiast," and the Wii is for kids and adults.
Published since 1999, previous lists have accurately predicted sell-outs, according to About.com.

It has been fortold.
clo1_2000 @ Oct 6th 2006 4:15PM
Or foretold, either way. I think its general consensus that launch systems of both systems will sell out this holiday.

Forget the NES, I'm getting a 3DO instead! I mean, check out the graphics!

The Wii is for kids and adults.
Very correct.
When the ESRB ratings first started one of the ratings was called "KA": "Kids to Adults".
You might recognize this today as "E"
"EVERYONE"

Yup, the hype is all good for the Wii as things keep rolling
But just because the hype is good, doesn't mean much (read: PSP)
Most likely outcome: Wii 67% (families, college kids, kids) X 360 22% (teens/other college kids) PS3 11% (techno junkies) Fanboys need not be mentioned

If the Wii manages to sell out this holiday with word of 8-9 million systems available by years end, Nintendo is going straight to second place by Jan 2007 and would not be far behind Microsoft for first place in the next generation race. That being said, 8-9 million systems is alot to sell in 2 months. It took the PS2 1 year to sell 10 million.
Good Luck Nintendo, may the gamers win....

I'm 24 and have a full-time career. I am also a gamer attending to LAN parties and such. I currently have a high-end PC, XBox 360, PS2, and a Game Cube.
It would seem I would be the prime customer for the PS3, but I simply don't have an interest in it. I barely bought any games for the PS2. I played FFX, MGS2, Dynasty Warriors 2, and Kessen. Since 2002, I have rarely touched it.
Truth is, I love to play mostly Online games like Halo 1 PC, Halo 2, Battlefield 2 for 360, and Real-time strategy games like C&C and Starcraft. I played World of Warcraft for a little while last year, but I didn't have time to get too deep. I also love the Zelda Games and Smash bros. series.
What I am saying is this:
PC: Real Time Strategy and MMORPGs
XBOX 360: FPSs and retro gaming
Wii: Children and innovative games and accessories
PS3: A Blu-ray player, but I do not have a High-Def TV so it is not worth it.
Sorry Sony, but I am not buying a PS3, even if the price was reduced. The games do not look that exciting. FF13 looks, well, odd. The system is only 10% more powerful than the 360. That means more games that come out on PS3 will come out on 360.
The best thing that Sony did make was a game called Infantry which is on SOE. It is fun, if that came out on PS3 I would buy it.

Jeez. Everytime I check out a Joystiq post, there's a mistake, and I kindly correct it (promptly) in the comments section. Not fishing for gratitude here, but don't you think that's worth at least a thanks or a star or something? If y'all want to hold yourselves out as a(n even marginally) quasi-respectable source for video game news, you have to walk the walk. Posters who help you do that deserve an occasional expression of thanks.

Monopoly Here & Now made the list? It's yet another countless iteration of Monopoly, 'cept now the properties cost a ton more. I don't know about anyone else, but I have to beg people to play Monopoly. Is this seriously what people want this year?

This actually sounds like bad advertisement to me. The Gamecube was refered to as a "kid's" console, a reputation that hurt Nintendo in the long run. This go around they need to get a broader demographic on board. Being mentioned in a list with "tickle me Elmos" and other kid's toys isn't really helping them lose that image. Neither PS3 nor the 360 are on this list because they aren't TOYS, they're entertainment consoles, generally catering to the adolecent group and up. While Nintendo has a strong fan following in the upper age groups, you average Joe would claim the GC (and maybe the Wii- time will tell) is for children (read: 12 and under). I realize this is a blanket statement but I would bet that factored into their decision to include the Wii on the list more than anything else. Just my 2 cents...

Hey Nonperil, thanks for pointing out the typo. Glad to have you around.

"Published since 1999, previous lists have accurately predicted sell-outs, according to About.com."
Well, you could say that the toys became sell-outs due to the lists themselves. Parents are desperate for somebody to tell them what kiddies like without having to resort to asking the children themselves.
I would like to buy a Wii this year. I really would. But I still have Neverwinter Nights 2, Bully, Children of Mana, FF 12, Twilight Princess (FOR THE GAMECUBE. I BOUGHT MY GAMECUBE FOR THIS GAME.), Resident Evil 4 for the PC, and a few other games that I can't really remember at the moment on reserve.
Yes yes, I know. I'm an old codger still stuck in the olden times of current gen.

I think I'd prefer the Elmo, provided that I had enough cash left over to get a bag of mushrooms too.
John doe @ Oct 7th 2006 9:08AM
The wii rocks the chart!
Mabui @ Oct 7th 2006 9:42AM
It's not just Toys r Us, theres a been a few articles as of late that say that Wii should be a hot little item from any number of news sources.
I can see Wii becoming hated, sure people like to put it down right now, but if it gets it's mainstream appeal than people will defininately be coming after it with pitchforks raised.
doom3 @ Oct 8th 2006 5:16AM
Hmmm it's on the toy list because kids also actualt want this thing... alnog with approving moms of course... All consoles are kiddy the whole industry is kiddy look at it's fan boys. They are not a great representation of adults...LOL The xbox360 isn't on here because not even kids want it... it's not as fun...maybe... The PS3 even kids know better than to ask for one of these, it's too much. It's like a elmo with blue ray... moms not having it...LOL
I guess we will see which xbox360 gamers where waiting on buying an xbox360. I still feel like they should have more must have games out for the 360 though. I mean what are the games current xbox360 owners buying or playing, except for GOW it's going to be a pack in soon?
Oyeah it's kids and adults you guys just can't read. Kids will always play video games and with out them the industry relys on guys like n8dogg who havn't even finished the games they've has bought. I understand man i got the same problem cus being older you have responsiblities.
Also too I wonder what was the percentage of kids out of sony's ps2 sales. I don't think they even know since all retail buyers are mostly over 18 years old...LOL
Also too the DS has alot of kiddy on it too braintrain and nintnedo dogs... very kiddy yet also cute which is some thing women love. Now Name one game you can get your girl to play on a PS3 or xbox360. That did not stop them from making guy games though.
No matter how many cute games came out for the system it's the games that are right for you that make you get it. If you don't like zelda, metroid, red steel, smash brothers, the games on the VC, then cool just say that. This whole over priced system is just an effort to look grown up in a industry built for kids and kid too grown to know better...LOL It's like action figures that also make coffee and play mp3s...LOL It's still an action figure and the xbox 360 is getting the biggest kiddy game ever yeah I'm talking about the pinata game. It's not on the list maybe becuase it is too kiddy and not seen as fun. plus too We all know Rare is the main reason for nintendos kiddy. Ms bought them in an effort to be fun but really just got kiddy cuz no one in their right mind bought perfect dark after playing it.
Really so far only one xbox 360 game makes me want one and thats strangle hold. I have a few Wii games I'm goning to get with no hesiation.
raindog @ Oct 10th 2006 3:29AM
Good points, doom3, but the lowest possible (i.e. best) score you can get in Brain Age is 20, so there really isn't much point in kids playing it at all. I would say that Brain Age is a good example of games for people middle-aged and older, and Nintendogs is a good example of games that appeal to women and girls. (Though of the women I know who have played Nintendo DS games, Animal Crossing seems to be the big hit.)
What 13-year-old fanboys think is "kiddy" really translates to "that which 13-year-old fanboys' friends think is uncool." The third-place finish of the Gamecube can be chalked up entirely to Nintendo's hostility towards 3rd party developers for the last 15 years. They put up with it for the SNES because Nintendo was still on top, then jumped over to the PS1 with enthusiasm. Only now are they starting to come back, and the quality of 3rd party games we see after a year or two will also make or break the Wii (the launch featuring over 20 3rd party titles is pretty hopeful, as long as they're not shovelware or demo level stuff. I am a little nervous about the focus on minigames, even though I know older gamers prefer a big variety of shorter activities, being an older gamer myself.)
Finally, try toking up before you play a round of "Herro Kitty: Roller Rescue" and then tell me that's a kiddy game. You'll never be the same again.
