That's no excuse for his insensitivity. He's a "professional" journalist that has a wide readership. His job standards bind him to professionalism that if violated, should justify canning. This post does not make fun of Americans seeing how there is no negative connotation associated with "round-eyes". There is a negative undercurrent with the opposite though. That's the difference.
