HD Adoption comments above mine:

The fcc has required to switch all channels to digital. Digital does not equal HD. The fact of the matter is 90% of market already has digital in the form of cable and satellite service. HD is a subset of digital channel.

I was at best buy 360 launch. Will be for wii launch and ps3 launch. I have to admint I am least excited about the ps3 launch. I am an avid gamer but the launch lineup is easily the weakest. Resistance is about the only worthwhile title.

In any case Wii will get my loving, 360 will get some hugs, and the ps3 will get the leftovers. :)

Long lasting 10 year console.

Someone said it best, not sure if it was this thread. in 5 years, MS and Nintendo will be ready for the next gen of systems, whilst sony (if they still exist) will still be resting on their "PS3 is a 10 year console) laurels. At this point (in 5 years), Nintendo will lauch Wii2 or Super Wii or whatever the hell they'll call it, it will be fully backward compatable, and upscale all the old games to 1080p, as well as have the motion controls.

Sales of PS3 (if sony is still around) will start to plummet, and they will be FORCED to come out with a next gen PS4, or lose out entirely.

The Cell crap is getting rediculus. Developers don't see the point in multithreading games becuase the cost/benefit ratio isnt there. Its not just for Console games that devs are complaining, they are also complaining about Intel's Quad Core CPUs. Really, there's only so much you can thread on a CPU. Just think about it, you have each of these on one CPU core: AI, collision detection, and physics. So there you only are using 3 cores of the 7 cores in the Cell.

Also, if I want to spend $xxx on "next gen hardware", sign me up for an Nvidia 8800GTS. It will be cheaper than a PS3 and will be 2x as powerful as the PS3.

"Not to take anything away from the PS3's technological achievements, but PSPs and 3DOs can win on paper all day long."

Oh come on! There is no way that you can compare the most successful non-Nintendo handheld and the $700 bomb and call yourselves anywhere close to an unbiased site?!

In one and a half years, the PSP has shipped around 20 or so million systems, and sold at the very, absolute least, 14 million of those. Sure that not quite as many millions as the DS, but that is millions nonetheless. Yeah, PSP (and everything else) is getting clobbered in Japan, but everywhere else it is selling pretty comparably to the DS.

If “merely” 20 million systems sold in one and a half is enough to put the PSP in league with the 3DO, then I can't imagine what you must think of the Xbox and Gamecube, which each have only accomplished slightly more hardware sales than the PSP with about 3 times the amount of time on the market (and at lower prices for at least a good part of that).

And, by the way, I am in no way a PSP fanboy. I own a Psone, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PSP, GBASP, and by December, a DS Lite.

As far as the article itself, yeah, it's largely a lot of bull. The PS2 overwhelming won last generation, and it was superior hardware wise the Dreamcast, and inferior to the Gamecube and Xbox. So, obviously, the race cannot be decided by specs alone, nor by any other single factor.

@98, Yea and by then most people will have HDTV's and 1080p will be the standard. I'm sure Nintendo will release a multicore, uber powerful machine then. And what was the last system that dominated for 10 years. Thats right no system did. That is just Sony propaganda. After 5 years the PS3 will be incredibly outdated as will the 360 and the Wii. Hell, all 3 are already outdated graphically.

I really am not going to use this article to buy my system. During the XBOX vs. PS2 vs. Gamecube generation, they said the Xbox won the most categories. Years later, the Xbox was the first to die in the yeaar 2004. if you don't beleive me check electronic gaming monthly. next the gamecube went to hibernation, but is still living today, (beleve it or not) The PS2 is set to live another 2 years. During that time the PS2 got the least categories but truned out to be king(#1). I m predicting the wii to win, because of the least amount of categories...

Any way the console im going to buy is either PS3, or wii! Which ever one is at my nearest Toys R us in december 2006. ( probably, ps3 as not many people can afford it)

This article spells doom for the ps3.
when haS the most powerful system ever won a consel war? think about it xbox even lost too the gamecube if you look at the numbers. But over all the least powerful ps2 won by a long shot.
DS>psp big time
n64 was way mor powerful than the ps1 but gues who won that one.
neo geo way more powerful than nes, but also 600 dollars and got its ass kicked. So how does this have anything too do with how the consel wars will turn out? By my calculations this article actually means wii victory.

Hi. I'm DocWho's doctor, Dr. Hu. I apologize for unleashing this mental black hole onto the world wide web. After sedating him with elephant tranquilizer, I was able to extract the truth with sodium pentathol. In his natural state, his tormented soul is incapable but here's what he actually wants to say:

"I'd like to offer a sincere apology to everyone whose time that I have wasted with my inane ramblings and logically abominable arguments. I was merely angry at my mother and father who failed to purchase a PS3 for my exlusive usage this morning; they also didn't buy me my glorious 1080p TV that I will use to court azn_1080p in an elaborate and raunchy monkey ritual of sexy time. I shall take my anger out on my failures of parents now instead of you intelligent posters who have been patient with me.

I take back everything that I have said about the PSP. Those were all contrived and fabricated lies; visions from my own Sony shrine that emits hallucinogenic incense that hangs above my bed. I created those lies even though I knew no one would fall for it because I just detest Nintendo for releasing a system that surpasses my own in fun factor and playability. That leads me to my next deficiency as a human...

I'm not ambi-company enabled; I can only purchase things from Sony due to a deep psychological problem.

Of course Sony is a fairly good company and we all agree that we owe them for their many good games. They make good games and bad mistakes like any other company. But childhood trauma or some other equally damaging event(s) prevents me from seeing this and thus I have to convey my points of view onto the general populace.

The origins of my repetitive and unimaginative "Wii FTL" comes from actually fearing that it might turn out to be a system I want. My other self will hurt me if I play it. Thus I've been instructed to put down the Wii routinely and as much as I can even if it appears as poor English. If I fail my other, currently sedated, self, I will be whipped like a dog. This treatment was successful in rooting out my "irrational" desire for the XBOX360. Now I associate Microsoft with the pain that gave me the whelps on my back.

Rest assured though; Dr. Hu (who I have named myself after, affectionately, out of pure appreciation for his good samaritan job as my saviour and translator) is making me play long sessions of Mario, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Halo 1-2, and hopefully Gears of War. This will kill my other Sony-ized self with a little bit of luck.

However, this treatment is dangerous. Every second of pleasure I experience is also unspeakably painful. I need your guys's collective support so I apologize for my idiocy. Please give me a hug!!! Thank you for doing your best to correct my irrationality. I appreciate everything that you have done."

Well, there you have it! He isn't a Sony-bot afterall. Underneath that big, overheated, Blu-ray tattooed exterior, he's still a human.

Please join me in supporting this fellow human being for we should all be kind and magnanimous. DocWho, I just want you to know that you're welcome. For my efforts, and everyone else's efforts to help you ascend to the next level. We call it rational humanity. Thank you for being so understanding.

Haha, I really like the huge picture after the areas the PS3 wins and the noticably smaller xbox 360 and Wii pictures. I'm not saying its some big clue that gamepro is biased, but you have to wonder why they did it. I used to actually read Gamepro at airports when it was available, but the last two times I've gone to buy it there was some big goofy anime picture on the cover. Anybody that puts Dragon Ball Z on their cover in 2006 doesn't deserve to be taken seriously as a gaming journalist.

We cant be 100% sure of who is gonna win this war. Me, I'm not even totally sure of who I think will win. Honestly, I see PS3 and 360, being really close. Although 360 is gaining a lot of games that used to be Sony exclusives, Look at Guitar Hero 2. Thats coming to 360, also I have heard Gran Turismo 4 is landing on xbox. Also Assasins Creed was rumored to be PS3 only but is now being released to 360 as well. Sony is loosing a lot of their strongest titles to multi platforms.

"Zebulunite , how can you not call yourself a fanboy, that comment you just made was exactly what a fanboy would say. "

So I'm a fanboy for pointing out the absurdity of comparing the PSP and 3DO? That's like saying someone who says the Gamecube is as successful as, say, the Atari Lynx is a fanboy. Both are absurd, false, and completely BS.

I also noted that BS of the article, and said quite factually that the next generation race will not be determined hardware specs or any other single factor.

What exactly did I say that was fanboyish? I pointed out the facts, and even noted the supposed, at least, discrepancy between PSPs shipped and PSPs sold. Geez...I guess "fanboys" are defined, at least by you, as anyone who thinks the PSP isn't a complete faliure.

Can we put one damn thing to rest??
Zelda is a GC game no more. That said it is still a great game I am sure but is not nextgen at all it only implements the wii controls in to it.
Nintendo will have the nextgen games for the wii but they will be nextgen on gameplay and not graphics, that is the territory of MS and Sony.
Why is everybody so blind? The X360 is like the PS2 last time and the PS3 is like the original XBOX. No way the Sony machine is less powerfull the X360 if anything is way more just like theXBOX was.
We all saw how that turned out...
So it is up to MS to stand its ground against Sony and Nintendo, right now it is their turf to defend they ar e the king of nextgen...
That said, I beleive if sony can keep its word, and ship 6 millions PS3 by Martch they will sell out and close the gap really fast and if MS can not get more suport beside PC ports for the X360 I can see it losing ground to PS3 and Wii very fast....

What do these systems all have in common: SNES, Playstation, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Playstation 2? They all have 2 things in common 1.They were the least powerful systems in thier generation's console war. 2.They won their generation's console war.

Anybody with a brain should be able to look back at the past 15 years and see that consoles with the highest "speed/power, graphics, storage" never win the console war. What reason can be given to show that this will somehow suddenly change?

The Wii has already won.

A kindly message to my fellow joystiqers (to whom it may apply).

when someoneone posts a couple times and is boviously being immature and pointlessly argumentative, it is probably still safe to respond, even to try to have an intelligent debate with them. However, after their tenth comment or so, it generally becomes obvious whether or not someone is just a flamer. At this point, please resist the urge to feed the flames.

If you really want to fight it out with them, arrange a meeting in the parking lot of an anbondoned warehouse.

But seriously, almost every joystiq thread is now finding a way to become a flame war between rabid fanboys...it is beyond old.

Karosso, the Wiimote can only have one extension connected at a time, be it the nunchuck, the lightgun, or whatever. I'm assuming the classic controller plugs in as an extension, which would mean that you need two Wiimotes to play virtual console games multiplayer, but not two nunchucks.

Also, games such as Wii Sports Tennis and Wario Ware: Smooth Moves don't even use the nunchuck attachment, so people who want to play those in multiplayer would probably prefer to buy just the Wiimote, and not spend extra for the nunchuck.

I have not given Nintendo much credit the last two consoles but, can't stop thinking they made a great move by not trying to compete on the same foot as Sony and MS, they will give us something different and we will be better for it I am sure...

Wow, yet another fanboy rant from all sides. About 10% of these posts have any validity to them at all. It's sad really that almost no Sony fan posts make any sense. You can tell that they're just talking shit, while the 360 and Wii fans actually have real points to make.

Think about it, PS3 will have how many systems at launch? As compared to the already install base of 360 and the launch amount of Wiis 2 days later. Look for the numbers Sony fans, they're easy to find, I won't hold your hand through this, you need to learn how to be respected on these blog sites.

Think about it, PS3 has a complicated-ass dev kit, whereas the 360's kit has already been used for a year and the Wii is using basically the same one as the Gamecube had, that every developer already has and knows how to use. Anybody who knows about the industry knows that Sony only survives because of it's third-party games. How many of those developers do you think will stay when it will be way more cost effective to develop games on other systems?

Think about it, all you Sony fans who are bragging about how quickly the reservations were taken at EB/Gamestop. Duh, do you know how many people are trying to sell those PS3s to stupid people on Ebay who will buy them for thousands of dollars and have no good games to play for months? (launch line-up is looking pretty weak for PS3)

Think about it, 360 already has established online play and Wii will also be online, for free, right out of the box with by far the best party-game lineup under their belt. When Nintendo's first-party games go online, it'll be over for 360 and PS3. Do you know anybody who hasn't had a good time playing Mariokart, Smash Bros., Mario Party, etc.?

Sony is getting too big for it's britches. I'm sure it'll do well, but there's no way it can stay on top this generation, it's shot itself in the foot from like 5 different angles.

For the record, PS1 and 2 did have the biggest game libraries, but what most Sony fans don't acknowledge because they can't handle the truth is that only 5% of those games that came out are actually good games that are fun to play (none of them first-party titles, and to those developers who made the worthwhile games, I give you props, but not Sony, for being given the credit by idiots who don't think).

That's the problem with you Sony fans, you talk out your ass like Ace Ventura, nothing worthwhile to even waste time reading. But only time will truly tell, so a year from now I can say that we all told you so. Noone stays on top forever.
