We wait for Wii (Philly downtown edition)

9:05 AM: Arrival. The first person in line has been there since 6-something in the morning. He's a hardened camper, having already scored a PS3 in the pre-order sale earlier this week. The person directly behind him showed up about an hour after he arrived. By the time I arrived, there were 12 total standing in line. Now, this is GameStop, the place where the hardcore gamer hangs out. The place where "mainstream" never ventures, so we weren't expecting grandmothers or many women in line, but the demographics in this line did nothing to add credence to the idea that this was a mainstream lineup. Of the first 12, 2 were women, one of whom was holding a place until her little brother showed up to claim it.
The rest of the liners-up are male, aged 18 to 35. Several are Drexel students and unabashed "Nintendo Fanboys." "I've never owned a system other than Nintendo and never will," proclaimed one mohawked, unemployed art school graduate. He was cool though: he offered to do a Dunkin' Donuts run for all of us.
9:30 AM: The line has 15 people now. I ask the dude behind me (sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering at Drexel) if he planned to buy a PS3. "Naw, I don't have that kinda money," he said, twice.
9:35 AM: A passerby asks, "This for the new PlayStation?"
Someone in the crowd says, "No, Nintendo."
Passerby says, "Oh, they got a new one?"
9:45 AM: The line has grown considerably. It's at about 20 people now. Another passerby walks by and asks, "What come out today?"
"Nintendo Wii," says one of the liners-up.
"New game?"
"No, Nintendo's new system," says someone in the line.
"What system is that?" asks the passerby.
"Nintendo Wii," says someone in line.
"Oh yeah?" says the passerby, who then finally passes by.
10:00 AM: The store manager says she's taking pre-orders for 32 systems today. As of 10AM, there are about 27 people in line. The store opens, and customers are let in two at a time.
10:25 AM: I place my order: Nintendo Wii and Zelda. A casual poll of others in the line indicates that my order was very similar to what they planned to place. Zelda was the big hit, plus random mentions of other games: Metroid, Madden, Smash Brothers. As I leave the store I count again and determine that there's still about eight spots for people to walk up and join the line. They'll likely be sold out of pre-orders by 11am.

I was right upstairs at the EB Games, where things seemed pretty much the same. Turns out that guy my line was right in saying the Gamestop line was longer than ours. Passersby upstairs asked the same thing. "What are you all waiting for?" "What's that?"
One guy resorted to just telling people it was a new Nintendo system and kept it simple.
Me @ Oct 13th 2006 3:34PM
why would anybody wait in line for a POS last gen hyped up system ??!!!
atworknow @ Oct 13th 2006 3:39PM
Screw you number 2. :) Anyway. I went to preorder in the dover delaware mall at EBGames. The majority of the people in the line of 30 people were over 40. I'd say about 20 of them. They had 32 availalbe for preorder.
Easy_G @ Oct 13th 2006 3:42PM
Lucky jerks. My gamestop in SLO was only taking EIGHT preorders. I showed up at 8:30 and there were already 15 people waiting.
Dracula Jones @ Oct 13th 2006 3:45PM
And the rest of us cry, chained to our desks.
OtakuCODE @ Oct 13th 2006 3:59PM
Well, I just got done punching myself in the balls over forgetting to go reserve a Wii this morning. Had work stuff on my mind and it just didn't enter into my consciousness until I just got a chance to check Joystiq. Sigh. Called the 2 Gamestops and the ebGames within 10 miles of here in Clarksburg, West Virginia... all out.

I wondered if the people that were there at the mall even had real jobs. My salaried job is pretty laid back and they don't mind if you leave for a while and come back.
N-zero @ Oct 13th 2006 4:05PM
YEAH I live in California in the Valley. I went to the Northridge mall only 6 people their. Then at about 8:00 a.m it was up to 26 at 9:00 a.m their was 33 people in line. Everyone got to pre-order but the store was out of pre-orders after that. I was number 8 in line. The Gamestop out side the mall had about 45 people waiting in line. They only took 30 Wii pre-orders. Too bad for those other people.
Todd @ Oct 13th 2006 5:30PM
Tons more hype and interest to get the new Nintendo. I was only in line for the PS3, just like everyone one else in line, so we could sell it on eBay. Honestly, less people want that system than you realize.
Carl @ Oct 13th 2006 4:03PM
Yeah, I went to the EB Games on State Street in Madison at 7 am this morning, and I thought I was lucky enough to be 15th in line. There were about 6 people who were there when the stored closed yesterday too. So yeah, about an hour before the store opened, an employee came and cut us off at 11 Wiis, and I was denied. He then told us to go to the mall because they had 22. I had to go to class, so I didn't go to the mall, and I later found out the mall actually only had 8. Such crap.
White Rose Duelist @ Oct 13th 2006 4:03PM
atworknow - It's called sick leave. I got my preorder in and then headed to my cube for an afternoon of wishing it was 11/19.
BklynKid @ Oct 13th 2006 4:08PM
Why would you wait in line to pre-order something that you'll be able to easily pick up on launch day?
Losers...
Dux @ Oct 13th 2006 4:10PM
32 SYSTEMS!!!! TAKE THAT SONY BEOTCH!
rawker @ Oct 13th 2006 4:08PM
The gamestop near me: i got there around 9:45 about 20 people in line, they finally opened around 10:15 said they were taking 35 preorders, there were about 5 people behind me, so everyone there before they opened got one, it was rather nice.
fyreblazer @ Oct 13th 2006 4:13PM
Wow, people actually waited in line at the gallery? Was there a line for the upstairs gamestop too?
sean @ Oct 13th 2006 4:12PM
Showed at up 8:30, store opened at 10. I was #5 in line.
Ended up growing to about 20 people. They only had 12.
This was at bloomingdale, illinois

"Why would you wait in line to pre-order something that you'll be able to easily pick up on launch day?"
Yea thats true..1 million at luanch and then I hear 4 million by the end of the yr.(My memory is a bit vague)
SerenityKry @ Oct 13th 2006 4:12PM
Chained to your desks? I looked at my boss and told him that the Wii was up for pre-orders and limited. It's gonna sound insane but I'm gonna go to the store and camp for this system and be in a little after 10.
He smiles, I don't care, go for it.
Luckly he is some what of a gamer himself and totally understands the video gaming hobby... addiciton, whatever you refer to it as.
serb @ Oct 13th 2006 4:17PM
its funny that nintendo is trying to target casual gamers, but everytime someone random walked by they didnt even know nintendo had a new system
Apoklypse @ Oct 13th 2006 4:15PM
Please do not call it "Downtown". It is Center City Philadelphia. Show me one traffic sign that says "Downtown" and I will gladly apologize.
PJ @ Oct 13th 2006 4:22PM
I totally agree with the #2 post. Nintendo's new system is just another way to ripoff fanboys. Don't believe me? How many times has the Gameboy been "updated" and re-released? Honestly, why would a hardcore gamer even bother with inferior hardware at a next-gen price? Xbox 360 core is just $50 more and you can still play the gorgeous Gears of War, Bio Shock, and Call of Duty 3. Perfect for a graphics whore like me :)
Pierce @ Oct 13th 2006 4:22PM
i didnt think there was anything left i hadnt seen someone bitch about on this site in the comments yet but #19 has proved me so very wrong.
GXXXX @ Oct 13th 2006 4:23PM
WHY WOULD YOU WAIT? 1 MILLION AT LAUNCH RIGHT? 300 MILLION PEOPLE ON TUESDADY!! USA ALONE!!
YES NOT ALL 300 MILLION PLAY, BUT EASY MORE THAN 1 MILLION ARE NINTENDO BUYERS.
pockyninja @ Oct 13th 2006 4:31PM
We wait in line because we're hardcore (silly Sony fanboys).
Got to my store in OK at 5:30 AM, I was 9th in line. The first guy had been there since 2:30 that morning. By the time the clerk came in at 9:00, the line had grown to about 30 people. He counted off the people in line, and told everyone after number 15 that there were only 15 preorders to be had. A few minutes later he came out and apologized to number 15, saying they actually had only 14. Bad day.
Proud to be a Wiitard @ Oct 13th 2006 4:31PM
because, PJ, not everyone is a graphics whore.
Me? I'm a nintendo whore and have been since I first played NES.
I guess I'm not who you're talking about though. I love to play games and have quite a collection, but I don't go around telling people that one system is better than the other and insulting people that don't agree, so I guess I'm not 'hardcore' right? I guess I'm not 'hardcore' because I don't choose ONE system over ALL OTHER VIDEOGAMES. Because we all know, to be a 'hardcore gamer' you are only allowed to play games on one console. nevermind that every console has something to offer, and pc has just as much to offer. but people that are willing to spend their money on more than one console and are willing to actually consider for ONE second that, gasp, you can actually have fun playing video games on every console and on PC, I guess people like me just aren't 'hardcore'
fuck being hardcore. I don't have to go peacock myself around in front of my peers because I am so socially retarded that I value peoples worth on WHAT FUCKING VIDEO GAME CONSOLE they play. If thats what being 'hardcore' is, fuck it. I am just a jackass that plays videogames because they are fun. hardcore be damned.
pockyninja @ Oct 13th 2006 4:32PM
Oh yeah, and we play Nintendo games because we like fun.
LaughingMan @ Oct 13th 2006 4:36PM
Doesn't it feel kind of weird preordering a Gamecube game for a new system? (Zelda:TP) Yes yes, it has a great new control scheme (wow it completely revolutionizes the fishing mini game!) but when it comes down to it, it's the same game you had reserved over a year ago for the cube. Doesn't exactly scream confidence, but we'll see I guess.
Mactor @ Oct 13th 2006 4:36PM
"its funny that nintendo is trying to target casual gamers, but everytime someone random walked by they didnt even know nintendo had a new system"
Have they even begun advertising the Wii in mainstream media yet? I have not seen a single billboard, television, magazine or newspaper ad yet. Even the radio ad I heard for the fusion tour only mentioned Nintendo, not the Wii. I am sure they will begin blanketing these mediums in the coming weeks.
Mr. Khan @ Oct 13th 2006 4:37PM
Meh, got mine at GameCrazy a few weeks back, I'm glad i didn't have to get in the rush for preorders as my parents would NEVER let me skip school unless i was sick as shit
Now its all about praying that they get at least 8 units at launch (bows head and prays)
Btw, i think its hilarious that all the entries under the recent posts are "We wait for Wii" A little excessive, no?
Kevin @ Oct 13th 2006 4:41PM
I agree, it's Center City - not downtown Philly. However, I switch it up sometimes when saying "I'm going downtown." Regardless, the "Gamestop" upstairs is an EB Games (yeah, basically a Gamestop). I was there in line, arriving at 9:30ish. I made a comment in another post but to sum it up, there was a line. There were more people than systems available fifteen minutes after opening, so some people ended up not happy. I was number 6, so I am indeed happy. Now I wish I had pre-ordered a PS3 so I could take advantage of Sony fans.
serb @ Oct 13th 2006 4:47PM

if less ppl want it for 600 bux how the hell do u think your gonna sell it on ebay for 2,500bux
aZn_1080p @ Oct 13th 2006 5:51PM
LOL Those passerby comments summed it up perfectly. Even after all the puff pieces Ninty has bought, the average joe (you know, the one who is going to drive Ninty's 'revolution') could still care less, and is only interested in the PS3. Only the hardcore Ninty fans are excited...
Now imagine when Joe Sixpack or Peggy Punchclock walks into a store to buy a system, sees the PS3 and 360 with amazing graphics, and then sees the Wii with stick men playing tennis.... "hmmmm those graphics really suck he/she says to herself, there must be something more to it, I'll give it a shot". (S)he then tried to play, only to finds that not only do the graphics suck, but (s)he can't even control the stickman's movement!!! (S)he is basically just waving her arms around trying to hit the ball in a digital equivalent to wack-a-mole, with crappy graphics to boot? What system do you think (s)he's going to choose?
Proud to be a Wiitard @ Oct 13th 2006 6:32PM
aZn, (s)he is going to choose the one they can afford. do you think the everyday person cares about how many sweat drops you can see on someones forehead in a video game?
Eric Robbins @ Oct 13th 2006 6:41PM
I got in line for both the PS3 on Tuesday and the Wii yesterday at around 8:00. Not 8 in the morning, mind you, but 8p.m., 14 hours before they opened. And I wasn't even the first in line for either.
eric @ Oct 13th 2006 7:14PM
what gamestop is that? i thought it was the one in the gallery at first, but it isn't, is it?
J @ Oct 17th 2006 5:41AM
Got to mall at 6:00 a.m.
Was #2 on line. Got my reciept here.
Azn = Fanboy.
I would have sold PS3s if I had the cash to get them. People will easily pay $2500 for one b/c their rich parents would buy those spoiled bastards anything. I take my hats off to anyone who waited in line and actually got one.
Tim Woo @ Oct 13th 2006 9:24PM
I'm guessing it's at the Gallery. I'm sure as hell it's not at KoP or any other mall.
Jei @ Oct 13th 2006 10:53PM
I'd say people who see a game that looks fun will buy that game that looks fun. To me, not many other games "look" fun on the other systems. Those games look like games for the ones who are into games, not into being entertained by games.
tails52 @ Oct 14th 2006 12:05PM
Wow... This absolutely amazes me. So much ignorance in the comments of this news article, but I won't touch on it. While mainstream advertising is nice, there are two sources of advertising that are pretty much free and far quicker in some cases.
1. Word of Mouth.
2. The Internet.
Think about it, most folks have the internet these days. I'll be picking up a Wii to add to my collection of systems this generation, sure it doesn't have the graphical horsepower of the X-Box 360 or the PS3 but I think most people here have forgotten about games are meant to be: Fun. If you can't have fun with uber advanced graphics, then I truely pity you. I adore all my systems equally and always will.
quicksilverzxc @ Oct 14th 2006 9:18PM
Dude, my EB Games had 11 Wii preorders and 13 PS3's. Some people had waited since 10pm the night before out in the upper 30 degree Fahrenheit cold of Wisconsin...and I showed up 30 minutes early to find out they all had numbers and I would have to wait for the next preorder session. I kinda wish they just wouldn't take preorders and I would be happy to wait in line November 19 if I knew I was getting a Wii.
