Online co-op for twitch style shooters would be difficult to implement without some basic changes to the game mechanics because of latency issues.

A Treasure-style answer would be to have both players on the same fixed scrolling playfield, but have each player vulnerable to only certain colored attacks/enemies, which only they would be able to attack, barring a latency adjusted special of some sort (think Layer Section, with each player on their own layer, only able to attack enemies on the other layer using a special weapon).

That would be pretty freaking cool now that I think about it.

However, it does mean that direct to internet arcade style coop isn't coming anytime soon...it would just suck (think twenty enemy / bullet updates per second on a FANTASTIC connection and you're getting the idea...generally it would be well below that).

I think Assault Heroes will fill this genre quite well. I played it at DigitalLife this weekend and while there are clear differences between the games (like raiden is flying and AH is driving), but the scrolling, vehicle shooter thing is done pretty well in Assault Heroes. And with pretty decent 3D graphics.

IMO Assault Heroes is not groundbreaking by any stretch but it does harken back to the gameplay style of Raiden and the like...but in a ATV.

No more old rehashed games. Let's get some good games that work first then we'll talk about it.

They really should be using the XBLA to put out rare gems that got passed over, games from obscure systems, multi-player games like Perfect Dark, or indie games like geometry wars. MS has done a fantastic job of squandering almost the entire last year by putting titles like Frogger and Dig Dug on XBLA.

Raiden Project was on the PS1. It had both Raiden and Raiden II. My roommate and I played that game coop about everyday in college. I would buy Raiden II in a second on XBLA.

Raiden Project and Parappa the Rapper are the only PS1 games I've kept over the years.

I would love to see a redone version of GoldenEye 007. Rare owns it but I don't know if Nintendo owns a piece too. 007 is my all-time favorite FPS. If it had online multiplayer and redone visuals (just to clean it up some) I would pay $10-$15. Another great game would be Perfect Dark.

There's a whole school of old school games which are perfect for Live, with co-op play, and like Robotron they need the two stick controller, though the original layout used a rotory encoder, they'd do with a robotron layout no problem:

Frontline
Ikari Warriors
Time Soldiers
Heavy Barrel
etc.

Oh, man Raiden II would definitely fill in the coin-op classic category of XBLA! I definitely hope it makes it to XBLA.

While we're on the subject, how about R-Type? I'd be happy with the original arcade game, but adding R-Type III or R-Type Delta, or hey, even an all-new title, would be phenomenal. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that R-Type was one of the most important shooters of all time.
