Oh, I love me some Shenmue. I love me some Shenmue good! I remember how depressed I was when I learned it'd never be released on Dreamcast in the US. Sure, I bought the Xbox version but part of the allure of Shenmue was the journey that spanned multiple titles like the Suikoden series on PSX. I used my money cautiously and got all the collectibles I could find thinking that when I transferred them over to Shenmue II I'd be rewarded for them somehow...but since it was never released I'll never know, and my pristine save file was for naught. And now I'll never see the true ending to that enchanting saga...how depressing is that? Why didn't you jerks buy it!?

Chu Chu Rocket is one of my favorite multiplayer games, although I have trouble finding people willing to play.

Re-Volt was far better on the PC, and remains one of my favorite PC racers.

Shenmue... meh. The control felt too awkward for me. I only played it extremely briefly. Wandering around the house, slowly opening everything, finding absolutely nothing in most anything... took forever.
The control scheme did it in for me.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2, of course, is worth mentioning, because it's still considered the only 'real' version available on a console. Project Justice (The sequel to Rival Schools) is another personal favorite that I play from time to time.

Being able to choose your plays for football on the screen attached to your controller was a brilliant option afforded by the DC's unusual controller design.

The Dreamcast had lots of amazing games and capabilities for its time, but the games that I still dig out when I meet somebody who hasn't played them are Ikaruga, Rez, and Space Channel 5 (part 2!).

my dreamcast is very strange. the case is off (cause it just won't play with it on), guess it likes to be naked playing games, like many of us out there. also the vmu i have won't recognize any new games. it saves all of them under shenmue. i loved shenmue, but that's a problem. i don't even know how it's possible.

Soul Calibur was the reason that I bought a Dreamcast. It was the only Dreamcast title that I played nonstop until the day (a few months ago) when I donated my Dreamcast to some sort of charity. It was infinitely better than its predecessor and both of its sequels. Sure, Shenmue (also way better than its sequel) was awesome, but you could only play through it once. I definitely played Soul Calibur more than any other fighting game, and that's saying a lot.

No system release has been the same since then. The Wii might be close, but not close enough.

Intangible Fact - no, I had the Dreamcast during that generation and still found the game to be too involved for the sluggish control scheme.

The DC had some great games. Shenmue, to me, never was one of them for that reason.

I still play Jet Grind Radio semi-regularly---hasn't been anything like it since (including the disappointing sequel). Rez is always a good psychedelic time. I think they're overrating Crazy Taxi and the original Soul Caliber (great, but not neccessarily better than Soul Caliber 2).

But why no love for the game I bought the DC for---Worms World Party? For my money, it's *still* one of the best multiplayer experiences ever, and you have time to smoke a cigarette or... whatever... while playing. It's a shame Team 17 hasn't gotten anything right since 2001, but WWP remains on my personal list of Top 10 Games of All Time.

My dreamcast is only really used for soul calibur and the occasional revist to ecco nowadays, I have the ps2 version of REZ too, which i blast through now and again.

It would probably get more love if it behaved itself and actually started up when i powered it instead of grumbling and not doing anything. Ive already taken it apart once to fix that, i cant be bothered to do that again.*shakes fist*

I still have my DC hooked up to my hdtv along with my ps2, GC, xbox, n64, snes and genesis.

I've got one of the older versions that allowed you to play homebrew ROM, and DCEMU discs. I play my NES and SNES roms on there weekly.

Much love for the Shenmue. I went out and got the special edition of Shenmue II for the xbox when it came out. Ikagura is awesome. Sonic Adventures was good too. I still play a lot of Soul Calibur and Marvel vs Capcom (usually drunk w/ friends).

If it wasn't for the DCEMU community, I probably wouldn't have kept playing it though. I've played through all of my DC games at least once. The DCEMU crew is constantly making all sorts of cool content to use on the DC.

Totally worth picking one up for 20$ @ your local GameCrazy..

Since the 3D era started, everybody has that one game that they look at and say, "I don't think graphics in a video game can ever get better." One person I know said that about Super Mario 64. For me it was Shenmue. I looked at a picture of a cat in Official Dreamcast Magazine and wondered why the hell they had a picture of a cat. Then I jumped back, it was from a videogame! Just look at the screenshot for this article. That looks like a next-gen game not a six year old one. Ok so the gameplay was sometime a bit slow, but it was trying to be realistic. In real life if you have a meeting with someone you don't just walk up and they are standing right there for you. You get up, you find something to do during the day (the arcades definitely made that easy), and then you meet the person at a designated time. Then you go to bed.

I did buy Shenmue 2 for the Xbox though I haven't gotten around to play it, though I did see the movie to catch up on the story. And burn what are you talking about " Shenmue 2: Special Edition"?

On another not the Dreamcast has 10 of the 150 highest rated games of all time. http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp
That might not seem like much but it's not bad for a system that only lasted for a year and a half.

Time to put on your thinking caps people. The Wii will play DC games. Think about it. Make them available from the Virtual Console. Or even remake the games. Sega seems pretty supportive of the Wii. And Jet Grind Radio would be simply AMAZING on the Wii.

I'm glad I'm not alone in loving Worms World Party. It was the one DC game that everyone who hated Rez could agree on, and the game that whiled away many a stoned student evening. Admittedly it's nothing too special, but I think it was the most perfect Worms game on the perfect platform. Which does actually make it something special.

Illbleed. Horrible control and questionable gameplay but it was, and still is, hilarious. Setting aside the fact that Sonic is the devil (he kidnaps, I swear, your sexy doll) the very first level is called The Homerun...of DEATH. The whole game is lovingly crafted camp but does have its creepy moments.

Sexy doll. I just...I can't explain it, you just have to see it. The whole scene where the mother happily buries her son with his favourite sexy doll figure is classic (and very, very wrong).

Off the top of my head these are the games that I remember being relevant for my Dreamcast. I still have three of them. Resident Evil: Code Veronica is still the most complete RE ever made. There were no loose ends and the story is excellent. Awesome game with a crazy ending. Dreamcast will forever be the console that could've but didn't.

Maybe if sega would have released a REAL Shinobi for it or a Panzer Dragoon or a REAL update to Kenseiden or Streets of Rage....

Games that would be great Live games are Death Crimson Ox, Powerstone, Virtual Tennis, Virtual On, Crazy Taxi, Giga Wings, Shenmue, Ikaruga, Chu Chu Rocket etc. I' ve never disconnected my Dreamcast 'cause I'm consistently playing games like Bangai Oh, Street Fighhter 3, MVC 2, Rival Schools, and all the 2D Shooters. It's my favorite systems to date.

I second the notion that DC really belongs to the PS2-XBOX-NGC generation because its capabilities are a lot closer to PS2 than PS1, and may in fact be closer to PS2 than PS2 is XBOX. Maybe.

Anyhow, put me down for almost any 2Kx sports game, rayman 2, virtua tennis, soul caliber, code veronica, wetrix, rez, house of the dead 2.

@Judd

The original Shenmue 2 was a DC dreamcast only title. The xbox version is considered a special edition of the japanese release due to the inclusion of that "story so far" dvd.

"can you tell me about the Wu-Du?"

That Mega64 skit where they parody Shenmue is god-damned brilliant. I don't care how many times i've seen it, it gets me every time.

http://www.mega64.com/shenmue.htm

If its good enough for them to parody, it must be a classic.

I don't want to pour cold water on this project or rain on any ladies' parades but I just have one question for all of you Sega-loving fanboys: If it was such a good system with such good games, why did it die so quickly and force Sega to give up hardware? Oh, and sorry, but look up the actual facts, Sony DID NOT kill Sega (although they will be joining them soon in the gutter). See, companies have these wacky concepts some people might call "financial issues" but I don't want to confuse you lot. Basically, even if you are the biggest fan of a product in your entire little world, it doesn't necessarily mean that the company that produces said product is doing very well nor that the majority of consumers required to make said product popular and successful will do so. I know it might be hard to believe or comprehend as a fanboy, but just entertain the thought, that maybe, JUST MAYBE, your OPINIONS are in the minority. I know, I know, this is a geeks’ site and we are on the Internet but those of you whom have had success with women know what I’m talking about—oh wait, Sega fanboys…you know what, scratch that, you’re not going to get what I’m saying. Regardless, I'll say it twice because I know it's coming: Sony DID NOT cause Sega to go out of the hardware business, Sega got out of the hardware business by their own accord. Sony may have helped some but the sole blame is all Sega. Do some research and you’ll see. Down with Internet myths!!! Bye Bye Sony. Project Midway, indeed... Hello restored US dominance in the Interactive Entertainment Industry--it's been too long coming. The Japs had a good run but just like Capcom and Sega, it's time to humble what we created for them. Always remember, 2 bombs were required for surrender, THINK about it...

The fact that PowerStone 2 never got the recognition it deserves is one of the greatest tragedies in console gaming, in my opinion. Literally everyone I have shown this game to has gotten hooked on it. The 4-player action is right up there in the echelon of Smach Bros. and I think it would be in Capcom's interest to revive the series on next-gen consoles (ie. beyond a mere PSP port).
