Joystiq at DigitalLife 2006

DigitalLife was a huge four day consumer trade show in New York City about upcoming technology and video games. (And it happened almost a week ago-- Blame my tardiness on Microsoft's open bar at their afterparty.) Attendees and members of the press were treated to demonstrations of the upcoming HD movie formats, new 1080p monitors, interesting streaming technologies, robots, and more. The biggest draw for people like myself were the games, and they were quite plentiful. Many unreleased games were on display, such as Final Fantasy XII and Elebits for the Wii. But the one thing that drew in the largest crowds had to be the PlayStation 3, playable to the public.

Sony launched the show with a keynote about their "true HD" products. Stan Glasgow, President and COO of Sony Electronics stated firmly: "1080p is TRUE HD! Microsoft is the sux0rz!!!!1"

Look at the smug look on his face as he shows off the publically playable PS3...

Of course, winning "Best of Show" will make anyone seem smug.

Sony picks up their trophy.

The Electronic Arts keynote was easily the best one of the bunch. Bing Gordon, CCO of EA, spoke about the future of games, and its convergence with Web 2.0, television and movies. Even if you hate EA, it's hard to disagree with their vision of the future: one in which games become more episodic, and feature more external community-driven interaction, as featured in The Sims, and the upcoming Spore.

One of the panel discussions featured at the show was "How to be a Professional Video Gamer," something I'm sure every Joystiq reader would be interested in. The PMS Clan spoke about the long hours of training each member must go through in order to win tournaments. Gaming is considered a sport to these people, and GGL is working hard on making video games an official part of the Olympics in China.

One of the many competitions that took place on the show floor. Simply blinking would cost these players victory.

Microsoft had a really awesome Xbox 360 booth, featuring new and upcoming Xbox Live Arcade games.

The cool thing about booth babes at DigitalLife is that they have a good chance of being robots. Hot.

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD player was on display. That thing is ginormous. It's almost as big as the 360's power brick.

Milky from 1UP was part of a panel that declared the winner of the holiday season. They picked Xbox 360 and Gears of War. They were obviously wrong:

the only reason the ps3 drew a big crowd was because it was right by the main entrance and right in front of the xbox 360 booth booth. most people didnt even know the wii was present and it was drawing big crowds too..it had more consoles and more people had an opportunity to play...but it did look pretty slick..ill give it that played it a fews minutes its the same as having a ps2 nothing...still buying it in a few years when its like 400 dollars too rich for my blood.
bungholio @ Oct 18th 2006 9:42PM
the PS3 is overrated(im not a fanboy of any system but its the truth and this is coming from a person that has a life outside of gaming[although i hardly play online gaming for the past few months or play video games the past few months]just get that straght)
Pedro Van Faulk @ Oct 18th 2006 9:47PM
1up had something nice to say about something that WASN'T the ps3? Now that is news. Luke Smith must have been sick.
David @ Oct 18th 2006 9:48PM

Man, I wanna be excited for the PS3, but I'm just not. I'll stick with my PS2 for a while. At least until the PS3 is under $200 on Craigslist.
Hemisphere @ Oct 18th 2006 9:57PM
Oh my God! The interview with the fanboys was BEYOND comedy gold!
"I'm telling you man, the PS3s gonna outsell the 360 by 10 to 1! 10 to 1 man. 1080p is BETTER THAN LIFE!"
Please, more interviews with fanboys Joystiq - take every oppurtunity you can, they're so much better in the flesh :)
Hemisphere @ Oct 18th 2006 10:03PM

For the noob that said: The PS3 Is Overrated..> Uhh It has not even been rated period yet, you can't rate something that hasn't been released moron.
For the Noob That Said: The Only Reason PS3 Drew a big crowd bla bla bla bla bla. Umm, why do you care?
Tempest Blayze @ Oct 18th 2006 10:12PM
Yeah. I think one of the big reasons the PS3 got the attention ebcause it was 10 steps from the enternce.
I played Madden Wii on Friday then came back on sunday and that madden Wii not working sign was up. There was a long line for the PS3 at the entrernce with vieweres who just looked.
For the Wii on the other hand both games were hidden but still drew a lot of crowds. Most people getting into what the people were doing and seemed very excited about something new.
Ezxra @ Oct 18th 2006 10:13PM
Oh mann.....brace yourselves...the ps3 fanboys are going to think this is massive ownage
irubratsforfun @ Oct 18th 2006 10:23PM

for like theres 1m Wii/Wiis and only 400,000 ps3 (but all the ps3s will sell but same with the Wii/Wiis so who makes the $money$?) and at least I'll be happy playing my Wii this year when you guys sit and....do....what ps fans do...whatever they do....
Ezxra @ Oct 18th 2006 10:27PM

Resident Evil is a 360 title too....
i laught at asian "abecrombie" with white "abercrombie" sorry ..but this was on a talk show the other day..
Methane47 @ Oct 18th 2006 10:36PM
Can you guess what game is playing in 1080p? -Read which looks better?
One is a third party port from a system that only(currently) supports 720p
And the other is a first party(kinda second party) game made with the PS3 in mind?
I do like the fact that the interviewer stated that its not the amount of pixels on the screen it's what you do with them...
n42 @ Oct 18th 2006 11:21PM
My favorite game at the show was Infernal at the Ageia booth. I thought it was a really good game. I hadent heard of it before the event. Me and a friend were very impressed by it. I imediatly compared the game to RE4 because of its similer controls and third person veiw. Everyone that was around me agreed. It looked great visually aswell. Though my time with it was short because the game locked up during play and an Ageia rep came by to fix it. With the growing line behind me i retired my spot.
While i didint get to play the Wii or Ps3 (darn lines) just based on the amount of fun people were having; id have to say the Wii was the place to be.
nick @ Oct 18th 2006 10:53PM
Quite frankly, the PS3 really didn't have a large crowd. There booth had to be one of the smallest booths for being one of the major players these days. Also the line to play the PS3, well i wouldn't call it a much of a line. Maybe Digital Life was being nice and just really feels bad about Sony. Or maybe some one was paid off. But whatever it doesn't matter the Wii is still a great system and by no means can it become a piece of crap if the ps3 fails or succeeds.
SpArDa @ Oct 18th 2006 10:57PM
Where is Digital life in new York city where and what street.
Retrofied @ Oct 18th 2006 11:00PM
Andrew, that Frogger duet was HILARIOUS. Can't stop laughing. Fanboys vid was sweet too.
rdj75 @ Oct 18th 2006 11:11PM
Its funny that around the 5 minute mark the two guys could not figure out which game was playing in 720p or 1080p. Lets face the fact that the average person playing from the average distance from an hdtv wont be able to tell the difference. This entire ps3 vs. 360 is so stupid, and everyone that argues about it is just as stupid.
GOLD5 @ Oct 19th 2006 12:54AM
I have fun with Wiis.
Me @ Oct 19th 2006 2:35AM
The PS3 is badass and i can't wait to get one this November. BTW guys.....you can't see the difference in a game running in 1080p or 720p on a small flat panel tv like they were using, especially at a distance (it's gota be a 40" + screen to tell a real difference anyways). Not only that but the basketball game was using a camera view from far out so you could see all the players and resistance was up close. The guys that were trying to decide which game was running in the higher resolution were standing about 10 feet away from the 20"+ screens.
Pince @ Oct 19th 2006 4:16AM
I can't believe that interviewer asked "have they found it to be a true next-gen experience"...yeah, because the sony rep is gonna say no, right?
Besides that though, I was impressed with the Sony Rep, even if it was the same old song'n'dance, he obviously had his lines memorized very well, and he seemed really honest.
The two Sony fanboys, made bile rise into my throat. *shudder* That was some of the most idiotic, incoherent bull that I have ever heard. Good luck with your ebay fortune kid, you're gonna need it.
I was highly amused by the fact that the two guys couldnt tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Booh
Lou D @ Oct 19th 2006 7:14AM
If I wasn't at work I'd been ROTFLMAO when I saw the interview with those 2 PS3 dorkboys!
LunarDuality @ Oct 19th 2006 10:22AM
The PS3 won the best of show this year, 360 won it last year and it wasn't even playable...
All of that proves nothing...it just means that it had a lot of buzz at that show.
Resistance looked good visually but the A.I. seemed pretty poor (I wonder what the difficulty setting they used) and graphics don't come above gameplay for me (even though I love pretty pictures). And I never saw any ridiculous lines to play it. What lines did exist were probably due to the fact that only ONE station existed to play it. The other two stations were basketball games. (Did anyone see more than the 3?) So, considering it's a major show in NYC it wasn't a mindblowingly long line or anything.
It was interesting to listen to the fanboys around the booth though talking about how great the PS3 is and how they're definitely getting it. Funny thing is that every person I've ever talked to about it that isn't a fanboy has said "I'm totally getting one." In response I said, "So, you've got $600?" And they balked... "That's what it costs?? I'll wait."
I think the PS3 is gonna be a monster of a system (in a good way) but I find it hard to believe that casual gamers are going to early adopt such an expensive console. And that IS Sony's bread and butter on the PS2 (Madden and GTA players and other people that own 2-4 games, not the hardcore gamers) I'm interested to see how this plays out.
LunarDuality @ Oct 19th 2006 10:38AM
I forgot to say...the highlights of the show for me personally was the Xbox Live Arcade booth and Guitar Hero II.
It was awesome to finally get my hands on Lumines, Small Arms (two solid buys for me) and also Mutant Storm Empires, Assault Heroes and Heavy Weapon. I am honestly a little disappointed in the pricing strategy for Lumines but I really only want the base mode for now anyway (I haven't played it on other platforms), so it might work out for me. Small Arms is a testament to the power of good compression and coding...that game looks amazing and will (I assume) be under 50 mb.
But I really can't wait for Guitar Hero II...too bad I'm stuck waiting for the 360 version which they said was a late Q1/early Q2 release.
It'sa Him @ Oct 19th 2006 12:23PM
I had a blast playing the PS3, and the lines weren't neccesarily long, just that, as someone said before, there was only one unit available to play resistence.
As for the Wii, while i didn't get a chance to play it myself, from what i saw, the people playing elebits weren't having that good a time. My guess is because it didn't look like a fun game... at all... i wish i knew what all the buzz about that game was about...
JohnHeist @ Oct 19th 2006 2:56PM

is HP selling some new magical printer or something, jeez?

#22 your a dumbass it is. alot of people are getting hyped up just for graphics and process power and they dont even know if its going to be any fun[unless you like to kill people and stuff but im not violent]let alone if the hardware will break on them after playing non-stop(i have no idea about computers and stuff like that cause i dont spend most of my day infront of a screen looking at computers or playing nerdy online RPGS so yeah i have a life)I think the PS3 will only appeal people that care about graphics and process power and stuff like that
