Is this the gimmick that makes the PS3 fun?

"so you can access files on a home PS3 from any WiFi connection -- in the beginning of 2007."

sounds a lot like location free all over again... too bad only hardcore users will use the service... just like location free tv.

.ed

The success of Slingbox proves that people like the concept of having access to their data remotely. People will utilize this feature if they make it easy to sync your PSP to the PS3. If all I have to do is connect it through USB and press a button, people are savy enough to make use of it, especially if they roll this firmware update out at the same time they start selling music and movies online.

.ed: Well, LocationFree required its own box, that no one had. This will work with a PSP and a PS3, which millions of people will have. Coupled with Blu-rays ability to support managed copy (who knows if the PS3 will support it though), you could watch your movies on your PSP from anywhere in the world! That's a lot cooler than 1080p!

The one thing really want is to be able to hook this thing up to my cable box or use a USB tuner. The addition of that and a recording functionality would put this system over the top for me, but I anticipate they won't include something like that until they've established themselves on the gaming front and people get used to the currently announced features. Too much, too soon won't continue to sell consoles in the future.

Just a random thought: perhaps this is how people can access chat messages while in-game (and etc)?

DBX00 @8:
This would really be great, and don't worry, as PS3 will allow homebrew everything might be possible. If the machine API is accessible enough, soon you will see many free application on the internet doing a lot of cool stuff for PS3.

"But, i would still like to access my PS3 media from a PC or laptop at a wireless hotspot; let me do that Sony! For free!"

You do realize you can do that right now with a networked PC and pretty much any other wi-fi device that supports video, right?

My bet is almost nobody is going to use this functionality. It's functionality that already exists, and nobody uses it now - even though everybody's got a networked PC at home. Part of the reason is that it's not always easy or straightforward configuring your router for this sort of thing (and there's nothing the PS3 can do to fix that), not to mention firewalls on the other end that often can't be poked through no matter what you do (at work, for example).

But probably more important, I think it's just a LOT more reliable to play media you have stored with you vs. having to look for a wi-fi hotspot somewhere (and most of them are for-pay anyway).

So, basically I think this is a non-feature. It's obviously intended to pump up the PSP's sales but it's not going to help. The PS3 will succeed; the PSP is still just as doomed.

in fact you can do similar stuff on the psp with homebrew anyway. If you get the PIMP streamer you can just stream media (any music, movies and pictures) wirelessly to the psp

Of course, you need to know and be able to use homebrew though.

Here's a link if you want it, http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/825

I am thinking the way patent law is in the US. Sony has the potential of being sued by Sling Box if they stream over the internet to another computer. I am no lawyer but if Sony can sue and win over the DVR issue. What stops them from being sued over this?

So you're telling me that the PS3 and PSP will allow me to take ANY video on my PS3, and I can wirelessly take it over a LAN, and while in the same house, watch it on a substantially smaller and lower-resolution screen while substantially depleting my PSP's already pathetic battery? WHERE DO I SIGN UP?!?!?!

#16, SlingBox can't sue Sony for this... Sony came out with LocationFree TV before SlingBox. The PSP was always intended to play recorded files. If you look at the memorystick website, it suggests that users can convert recorded TV shows from their Windows Media Center PCs to PSP format and save it on their nice big memory sticks. Or, if you don't want to do that, plop down like 300 bux on a locationfree base and stream TV directly to your PSP. I've done both (both at home and remotely at my friends house) and it works just fine. Anyway, it's a natural next step to have the PS3 streaming content to the PSP. With more and more firmware upgrades, the PSP becomes less selective of what it won't show you ;-)
