If you were to ask John Siracusa, the Nintendo Wii is not really "next-gen" when you think about it, citing its lack of horsepower that compares to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PS3 as reasons why. While we laud him for his praise of the GameCube, we can't help but feel that, in a lot of ways, Nintendo's Wii is the only next-gen offering for gamers. We base this belief on the fact that with each generation, things must be improved upon from the last generation. Before we can go into that, however, we have to think about what improved the last generation from the one before it. We'd have to say that bringing online gaming to the console scene is our choice for the single greatest improvement of that generation.
As for this generation, one could argue that, so far, not a single thing stands out above the rest. Maybe most of that can be attributed to the fact that only one next-gen console released so far, but with Sony and Nintendo's proposed plans of attack, we'd say that this generation, how we play games will be the single greatest improvement.
Nintendo's console promises a more immersive, fun experience. Different games that play in all kinds of different ways, and all that. We look to Sony and Microsoft, and personally, we don't see them innovating anything other than how to extract money from the gamer's wallets.
How about you fine folk? Are we full of hot air or do you find our opinions aligning more with your own?
