Or, you know, come up with a solid enough game idea/business plan to get the right financing together...

Mind you I don't care for the works of either McFarlane or Salvatore; but McFarlane at least knows how to put an entertainment empire together...

Also, was there a point to this article other than bashing Curt Schilling? I don't know the first thing about baseball, so I don't really care either way; I was just curious....

How was this article bashing Schilling? I think it's a nice notion that he wants to try and get into development, though I wonder if he really knows the depth of what he's stepping into.

Wow. You would think JoyStiq would be happy for news like this. The fact that he can even get into the gaming industry is a big start, since baseball players, or any professional sports player wouldn't be caught dead playing games like Everquest 2.

Eesh, give the man a break. Its still in pre-production, he pitched on a bloody sock, and broke a 86 year old curse. The man has the right to do whatever the hell he wants to do. So, either you're with him, or your a damn Yankee fan.

My first suggestion: STAY AWAY FROM MCFARLANE!

That man has yet to contribute to a good game I know of.

He's rich, he wants to make a game. I'd do the same thing in his situation, I don't see what the big deal is.

Also, an addition to my comment.

Nobody wanted World of Warcraft. Now look what happened.
All I'm saying is, you can't judge a game before its even made. This news is about a month old, so I doubt theres much to base this off of.

every new developer that pops up has plans to blow the game industry away with some new MMO.

theirs 3 new companies all with the same goal in my city alone.

all of them backed by "some rich dude."

Thanks for cracking that egg of knowledge all over my head BklynKid. By your name you appear to be a Yankees fan, and if so it must feel swell to know that your team has been golfing as often as the Sox this fall.

I didn't find this article to cast Schilling in a negative light, but it will be interesting to see how his game comes along. Unless it's a sports-themed MMO (which would be pretty neat), hasn't every other type of MMO already been established? I don't see anyone joining Schilltrek over Everquest or WoW just because of who's behind it.

First, yay me for sending this in (and I'm a Met fan so don't start!!!)

Secondly, to #4: You'd be surprised. Randy Johnson is known as a very avid MMORPG player, and I'm sure he's not the only one (actually, that may be where Schill got the idea, since they were teammates in Arizona). Think about the unique hours athletes work, and how they structure their spare time. It's pretty common knowledge that many players watch soap operas during the day, since that's when they have free time. Others play video games when they're free, and I'm sure some enjoy MMORPGs.

Schilling is smart enough to understand that he needs capable personnel to reate something worthwhile; at least give him that.

Wasn't he very much involved with the now defunct High Heat series. I remember that doing pretty well. Anyone remember this? I don't think he's a rookie in games.

Schill is well known as an avid gamer. He used to play Everquest a lot, along with some ex-Phillies teammates (Doug Glanville, I think). He also is a hardcore grognard, playing wargames like Advanced Squad Leader.

(Yankees fan, btw)

His involvement with the High Heat franchise was through his MLS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) foundation. I.e., some amount of proceeds from sales of High Heat went to that foundation. He may have been the cover athlete at some point too.
