Little correction. Shack News didn't "catch up" with anyone. The interview is background stuff I did for the upcoming Civ Chronicles series and was distributed by 2k Games PR. Shack News simply published it as did a number of other sites.

Civ Fanatics, for example. (http://www.civfanatics.com/interviews/CivChronicles_Bruce_Shelley.php)

In the interview, Shelley says you can play a complete Civ game in just 4-6 hours. From the reviews that I've read, it takes a lot longer than that to play.

Can anyone recommend AoE over Civ, or vice-versa? I know one is RTS and the other is turn-based. Thanks.

I'd recommend AoE but AoE III really disappointed me.
So then I'd recommend Civ but I got bored of the demo in about twelve seconds...

...sooo, given the choice, I'd flip a quarter.

Heads: put it back in your pocket
Tails: flip it over, re-evaluate
Quarter lands on its edge and rolls over a Ouija board spelling the name of one or the other game: you know what to do =)

@2

Essentially, Civ is a much more complex Risk game, while Age games are smaller scale encounters. An Age game is meant to simulate a war or a campaign, while Civ is the whole swath of history. Its hard to make a recommendation for you without knowing your preferences, as both are the standard bearers of their respective genres and are both tremendously good series.

For what its worth though, I prefer Age games.

Craig, Pirates was a year before Shelley arrived at Microprose.

dark082 - you can finish a Civ 1 or Civ 4 game in four to six hours, but both Civs 2 and 3 stretch things out a little. The beauty of Civ 4 is that you can customize the game to match your speed.

Civ and Age of Empires are really different beasts. It's like deciding whether you should read Tolstoy or Yeats. If you want a quick game with a lot of killing and combat, go for Age. If you want a longer game that gives you little cookies along the way, go Civ.
