Coleco tiptoes back with Sega-filled handheld
Target is now accepting online pre-orders ($49.99) for "Coleco Sonic Handheld." Could this be the resurrection system Coleco hinted at almost a year ago? It's doubtful; instead of ColecoVision hits, this all-in-one portable is packed with classic Sega titles.Complete list of games:
- Sonic Drift 2
- Sonic Triple Trouble
- Alex Kidd in High Tech World
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World
- Altered Beast
- Assault City
- Astro Warrior
- Aztec Adventure
- Bomber Raid
- Columns
- Ecco II: The Tides of Time
- Fantasy Zone
- Fantasy Zone: The Maze
- Global Defense
- Kung Fu Kid
- The Ninja
- Penguin Land
- Quartet
- Snail Maze
- Super Columns

No ToeJam? Joe Montana Football? the original Sonic? Streets of Rage?
ugh.
Aaron Prather @ Oct 27th 2006 12:59AM
Who own's Coleco now? Last time I checked they were bought out by Hasbro.
ManekiNeko @ Oct 26th 2006 10:33PM
Coleco had to do things this way. Ironically, they don't have the rights to publish any of the games released for the ColecoVision, as they were all ports of arcade titles by industry powerhouses ranging from Nintendo to Konami.

coal-co or co-lee-co?
(R) @ Oct 26th 2006 10:02PM
Why does it only have two buttons? Are these Sega Master System games, or what?
portly @ Oct 26th 2006 10:06PM
A version of this thing is already for sale at Wal-Mart in Canada for around $40.00 CDN. I saw it this evening and thought it was weird to see Coleco and Sega on the same box.
AoE @ Oct 26th 2006 10:10PM
@(R) Yeah, those are SMS/GameGear games (the systems were virtually identical)
Not exciting for many people I know... but that list has me ALL hyperactive. SMS was my console of choice when I was a wee lad. Needless to say, my pre-order's already in :)
Interesting factoid: Snail Maze was actually a mini-game included in the original SMS. Boot the system with no game cartridge plugged in, and Snail Maze would boot.
BPM? @ Oct 26th 2006 10:21PM
Yes, the device has Game Gear and Master System games.
Looks pretty cool. I may pick one up one of these days (probably when it's in the bargain bin...).
dankicksass @ Oct 26th 2006 10:23PM
Thanks Coleco, I always wanted another Game Gear without the mass-adding cart slot. Ugh.
Aaron @ Oct 26th 2006 10:32PM
They started putting these on the shelves a few weeks ago at the Central Florida Super Target stores... they have about 5 different versions... Sega, Space, Racing, etc... $30 to $40 each I think.

"coal-co or co-lee-co?"
You just made me cry.
blahshigg @ Oct 26th 2006 11:36PM
It's pronounced "Conneticut Leather Company".
Jeff @ Oct 26th 2006 11:49PM
Ummm: http://pictures.kyozou.com/pictures/_3/2140/2139288.jpg
So yeah, not a new product. Just a re-badge.
JonDarkwood @ Oct 27th 2006 12:15AM
"coal-co or co-lee-co?"
I like to pronounce it "waste-of-mo-ney."
jorod74 @ Oct 27th 2006 3:31AM
what the heck? i am not about to shell 40 bucks for a tiger electronics ripoff that any kid born after 1998 would be insulted to play.
i miss the old 2600, the 8-bit NES, and gasp, the 16 bit machines, but the price for the setup is wrong when i can buy classic collections for the PS2 for half that price and get more games.
DarkTetsuya @ Oct 27th 2006 12:55AM
ASTRO WARRIOR AND SNAIL MAZE? SOLD!
Amos @ Oct 27th 2006 1:24AM
Does it play Game Gear games, as in, the actual cartridges? That would be kickass.
20XX @ Oct 27th 2006 2:09AM
ManekiNeko:
Does that include Colecovision conversions of Sega games? Somebody needs to rerelease Congo Bongo. I don't care who.
Brian Sexton @ Oct 27th 2006 2:37AM
Cool, I really enjoyed some of those games when I was a kid. I wonder if the display resolution is appropriate for the games or if they will look distorted like Phantasy Star on Game Boy Advance.
I would like to see one of these with the whole Phantasy Star series, Miracle Warriors, and perhaps Golvellius.
saboola @ Oct 27th 2006 7:16AM
You would invariably do better picking up a gameboy advance, the cheapest flash cart you can find, and loading a ton of emulators on it.
turkey @ Oct 27th 2006 7:41AM
I think you guys are missing the point, who cares if you can get the games on your ps2 for cheaper, they wont look as good on a tv, and its not portable.
It looks like a gamegear clone with modern battery technology (you would presume) and some games, at $5o is a steal for a trip down memory lane, for thoes of us who had and loved the GG first time round.
Hugh Jass @ Oct 27th 2006 8:40AM
I've had one of these for a little while now. My impressions are at http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=94760

"You would invariably do better picking up a gameboy advance, the cheapest flash cart you can find, and loading a ton of emulators on it"
That reminds me, I need to get a pass-me/flash cart for my DSlite. The only thing I miss about PSP was retro gaming on the go.
Anybody done this? Any recomendations?
George @ Oct 27th 2006 11:23AM
This thing looks kinda cool. I don't know why, but I think I am going to buy one today. For some reason this excites me more then Wii or Playstation3. Lego Starwars 2 soured me on my DS lite. That game was the worst!
frodo @ Oct 27th 2006 12:23PM
It's pronounced "Co-lee-co" because the name comes from "Colorado Leather Company".
Colin @ Oct 27th 2006 12:02PM
In Canadian Walmarts these are under the PlayPal brand name and the website is Playpalworld.com
lionzub @ Oct 27th 2006 4:17PM
Speaking of Phantasy Star. Would it have hurt to put that or another RPG on the system?
diskoboy @ Oct 27th 2006 12:55PM
Frodo - It's Conneticut Leather Company.
And while I do want one of these, I think it's odd the new Coleco teamed up with Sega to produce a handheld full of SMS titles. You'd have tought they'd have made a Colecovision handheld.
You could've probably fit every CV game ever made into one chip, and they could still keep the price around $50.
Welcome back, Coleco! Just don't ever try and pull that ADAM stunt again.
Snortin_PHP @ Oct 27th 2006 4:15PM
Actually I saw one of these at the Target in New Bern NC just this past weekend. Not sure why the site is taking pre-orders. I actually almost bought one.

They probably didn't want to bother with SaveRAM. *shrugs*
Cajun Mike @ Oct 27th 2006 10:32PM
What is it going to take for us to be able to get Zaxxon in some form from Sega? They have released their classic games in lame forms as they never include their great games...... and Zaxxon is always ommitted!
xiojason @ Oct 29th 2006 10:40PM

$40 for this is just wrong. It's $19.98 CAD at WM in Canada now, picked it up yesterday. Gtreat unit. Selection of games by and large is ridiculous - they could have picked SUCH a better selection - but the fact that games I loved like Global Defense and the snail game - SMS boot up screen included - GG Columns etc are included makes it worth it. Sonic Drift 2 however is inexcusably butchered by being played in a window about 20% the size of the screen - WTF??
