Ill be staying at version 1.5. With the firmware emulation system in place, there is really no need to update. I have 2.71 emulated on my system at the moment, anyways.

I'm at version 0, because I sold that POS after I realized the only reason I had it was to play NES games, and I can do that on my DS with just a little bit of purchasing.

I'd rather carry around 1 handheld than 2.

Good luck to all those that are sticking with firmware 1.5 with emulation, because once they tie this machine to the PS3 and Playstation Network I would assume that you will see constant upgrades that will force users to upgrade to continue using it with the network and PS3.

We can definitely expect the PS3 to have automatic updates when the system logs into the Playstation network. Software mods are pretty much a thing of the past as long as you want to play multiplayer games on a unified network.

So my PSP (if i ever use it again after the recent Lik-Sang thang) will be updated to this soon.

You're asking why the fanboys who fall back on homebrew as their reason to support the PSP don't go to the GP2X? The same reason more Jewish people don't eat crab cakes - it's against their religion.

IanC, how does running homebrew make anyone a "dickhead"? Because the large corporations say it's "wrong"? When you purchase something you OWN it. You can do whatever the hell you want with it within the boundaries of your country's laws. Not being allowed to is like a car manufacturer telling you that you can't put in a new stereo or speakers, or upgrade the suspension or engine. It's rediculous. Since when did hardware/software manufacturers get more legal protection than any other market? Idiotic DMCA...

Because I can't import one because LIK-SANG got closed by sony, so the only handheld homebrew is a hacked PSP.

I have 1.50. Usually play some Zelda, Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger. But as soon as the emulator starts getting som more interesting additions in the PlayStation Store (Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and so on), and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops shows up in the stores, I'll have to upgrade. Sucks, doesn't it?

I'm to much of a Metal Gear-fan to wait a couple of months so they can make some kind of hack that makes it playable on 1.50.

I doubt most of those sticking with PSP homebrew and 1.5 are going to be purchasing a PS3.

And if they could afford a PS3, they probably could afford a new PSP exclusively for homebrew.

Just upgraded to 2.71 SE-B yesterday and I must say its incredable. Basically its 2.71 firmware, with the ability to natively load homebrew just like 1.5, natively load iso's from the xmb without the need for emulation, and a recovery menu so you won't brick your system. God I love homebrew, why would ANYONE EVER upgrade to stock???

Why upgrade? I got Atari, NES, Genesis, Game Gear, SNES, GB and GBA at the palm of my hands. My PSP's a universal remote for my TV and surround sound. I can stream TV using my Location Free TV, listen to one of the 50 mp3s, maybe even play on of the 2 movies or 4 games saved on my 4 gb duo. Not to mention I can check all my email on my email client.

My PSP can do everything a normal firmware can do plus more.

Anyone that says keeping your homebrew at 1.5 is stupid is dumb. You get the best of both worlds by not upgrading. All the features of the new firmware updates plus all the functionality from the homebrew community.

I have a DS and rarely touch it because I need all-in-one device and the PSP suits my prefrence...

Wait, Sony makes games for the PSP? I thought it was just for running Nintendo ROMS, and badly ported PS2 titles.

DS is way better than PSP. I had a PSP, I bought it the week of release, and I thought the DS would fail. Silly me. I just dumped my PSP on some poor soul on eBay because I was tired of broken promises from Sony (remember that slick keyboard that will never see the light of day) and I was using my DS WAY more than I had ever used the PSP.

Face it guys, the PSP is dead, and if the PS3 is relying on the PSP in any way, or the Sony hopes that PS3 sales will cause PSP sales they are dead in the water.

PSP is dead? Since when? Korexz, you really need to take off that blind fold you are wearing, cos you don't seem to be seeing whats going on around you, PSP isn't anywhere near dead, the games may suck, but it is the second best handheld behind Nintendo compared to anything that has been released before, plus it is second in the media player industry and most likely will do well once and if it enters the phone industry, unless Sony messes it up.

Nobody cares about DS in this comment section, this is a PSP conversation, if you want to talk about how you ditched the PSP, go and converse on the DS fanboy site where they will gladly accept and praise your comments, alternatively a DS ARTICLE.

I wouldn't be found dead with a DS if you wanna hear my comment, cos you seem pretty happy to state yours, I'd rather stand in a camp fire (Don't mind Wii though, I'm getting Wii). :)

I've upgraded my PSP, can't be half bothered with old game emulation, I play them on my PC without needing them again on my PSP, but unless there is reason for me to upgrade again, I'll wait a bit and see what happens.

Wait a second... if they are releasing 2.82, does that mean 2.81 got cracked? I thought that one was still safe.

Couldn't the hackers just look at the new version, find out what was changed, and... crack 2.81?

Buckshot: Same, 1.5 and not changing. I upgraded to 2.0 last year for LCS and SOCOM, turns out it wasn't worth it. I really want MGS, Killzone, and VCS though. But its a shame I won't get them cause Sony feels the need to force updates in games. Before the PSP came out Sony said they would never force people to update, looks like they lied. I hate how they require updates for games for no reason, they blame homebrew when really its them preventing us from buying games. I have homebrew and I'd gladly give Sony some of my money, to bad they don't let me....

To those of you running homebrew on your PSP, all I can say is - enjoy it while you can.

I had my PSP on 1.5 for a good year, just playing homebrew games and so forth, and everything was fine.

Then all of a sudden it started acting up. Games wouldn't load. Files wouldn't appear on the memory stick. The system would freeze up when I entered the system settings.

It took me a good 6 hours to figure out how to reinstall 1.5, and then I thought I'd update to 2.80 - Screw homebrew. I was sick of not being able to play new games and demoes, and being able to run emulators and read text files wasn't worth losing my PSP over. And bang. Firmware corrupted during the flash. No more PSP.

As the system was over a year old, no warranty (and Sony probably would've known I was running unauthorized code on it anyway).

I've since bought a new one, since there's a ton of games coming out soon (plus the downloadable PS1 games), with a new 12-month warranty, thank you very much, so I don't have to worry about the same thing happening again.

Still, I'm out of pocket, and looking back at all the badly emulated games I was testing out, I really wonder what the whole point of it was.

So by all means... It's your PSP, you can do with it as you see fit. But just be aware that you're playing with fire, and don't come crying when you get burned.

Heh, a lot of great games coming out for the psp.. right. I hope the paycheck is worth trying to sabotage other people's recreation, guys.

1.5 firmware until not just one, but several "killer apps" appear on the PSP.. and don't have five minute loading times. Even then you might only be able to pry my Phantasy Star IV and Chrono Trigger out of my cold dead hands.

@ Ian

You can run the new games using a simple game swap method. Insert a game UMD that works, start it up, and while on the white-themed PSP intro quickly swap the UMDs over. It works with the new VCS.

It was a video I watched... let me go find it!

OK this is a similar video... not the exact one. But it's the same method.
