Hey, I owned the Pac-Man board game. Seriously. I think it was from around 1982 or so (I definitely remember playing it in '84).

The pieces themselves were not well-constructed - I remember breaking at least two of the Pac-Men and a ghost. The marbles were durable, but they admittedly made the holes for the marbles on the game board narrow and thus it was rather easy to have them scatter - particularly if you played on the floor (and don't even ask if it was on carpet).

The concept itself was neat, but the games were rather short as the board was small and there were only so many marbles. Even a two-player game could be over within 15 minutes.

It was sold at a yard sale years ago... I'd never play it again, but it'd be nice to see it again for old-times' sake.

Also, though you won't see it in stores, there is a Pokemon board game based around catching and training Pokemon. You can get it off of Hasbro's website, and Nintendo has been known to give out copies as prizes at Pokemon events (I got a copy at a tourney, myself).

Nice piece.

My first game based boardgame was Xaxon - the game wasn't much but it had some cool pieces from memory. I think the LOTR Risk is worthy of a mention as it captures the feeling of the movies (more so than the books) and is a heck of a good time.

@32

That Pokemon board game was actually available in stores for quite a while, I picked one up at Toys R' Us years ago, and played the heck out of it with friends. It was surprisingly fun. Maybe I can dig it back up.

The Pac-Man game was actually pretty fun for a board game.

MB also came out with board games for Ms. Pac-Man, Zaxxon, Donkey Kong, and Berzerk.

what about the WoW board game? has anyone played it?
$80 is a bit much for an adapted board game... think TCG will do better, picking up a starter deck isn't that big of a commitment...

Civilization: The Board Game

Not the best adaptation of a video game but still fun to play if you can get past the mountain of rules. The game's main selling point was that it had 76,000 pieces or something. I think I've only played it a couple times due to the complexity or the rules. Half of our game night was spent learning the rules!

HOLY CRAP!!! i used to have the pacman board game too, i had completely forgotten about it until seeing the picture, wow that brings back memories, like when me and my brother leatherface had to go help grandpa, and the time when my brother had to stop those smugglers in that cave, wow, flooding back i say.

That pac man game had the same fascination for me as did this little smurf bus i had that would pick up and drop off little smurf schoolkids... i liked the whole "mechanical picker upper" thing... very much in the katamari mindset for me.
(off to dig through boxes at home)

I thought Civilization was a board game, then got turned into a video game, and then they made another board game based on the video game (confusing, no?). Am I wrong on this one? They made the Warhammer series based off of the board game. Risk and Axis & Allies have been turned into video games. I think it's a bigger risk to translate a video game into a board game than vice versa.

They do make board games out of every IP now, though. Simpsons, Sex and the City, Star Wars, 24, CSI, ESPN. They even have a Tomb Raider Board Game. Most of them are crap, but I think the attention to detail in the board games like Doom & WoW are much better and probably a lot more fun and engaging than, say, the 1000 different versions of Monopoly or Clue.

I loved the Pac-Man board game! Alas, my copy also likely ended up as yard sale fodder. As did my copy of Clue: Master Detective. augh. now that was a good game. Time to browse eBay...

Blokus is like a Tetris board game, only better.

I had the Pac-Man game pictured as well. And the Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda and Q*Bert games from the mid-80s as well. Good times.

Warcraft: The Board Game

Note, that's not WoW, just good ol' Warcraft. The art and rules are based loosely off of WC3. The game does a startlingly good job translating a real time strategy environment into turn based play. Each turn has four phases, and each player completes a phase before the next phase begins. For example:

Player 1 harvests gold/wood
Player 2 harvests gold/wood
Player 3 harvests gold/wood
Player 1 moves pieces
Player 2 moves pieces
Player 3 moves pieces
Player 1 deploys newly trained units/complete construction
Player 2 deploys newly trained units/complete construction
Player 3 deploys newly trained units/complete construction
Player 1 spends money on new units/buildings
Player 2 spends money on new units/buildings
Player 3 spends money on new units/buildings

In this way, the game stays fairly balanced. Player 1 doesn't get to have his army up and running on his turn before Player 2 even gets his gold for the day. This does get a bit confusing, as new players will have a hard time remembering the order of the phases, and who begins phase 1 each turn (it rotates). Combat is pretty logical (melee units can't take out flying units, and ranged have first attack at either). I haven't played too many times, mainly due to lack of interested partners, but when I've played, I've really liked it. The only thing I don't like is the oddly shaped peices. It's really hard to design your own "map" with the completely baffling ground peices you've been given. They are odd shapes, and hard to fit together any ways other than the ones given to you in the manual.

The difference between the four races (Orc/Human/Undead/Night Elves) is mainly in how far up you can level specific types of units, and if there's any innate magical ability to various units as well.

I dig the game, and I really need to find more people to play with.

There have also been a handful of tabletop RPGs based on video games, the most obvious being the (World of) Warcraft games. There haven't been a whole lot done commercially, since the licenses are often too expensive for most RPG publishers to afford.

Just recently 1km1kt (a site for people to post free tabletop RPGs) had a contest for video game inspired RPGs created in only 24 hours. People really ran with it, and came up with games based on DDR, Frogger, Master of Orion, Alien Hominid, Q*Bert, Sonic, etc.

Me too - both the pac-man and zaxxon ones. I'd completely forgotten about them until I read this. The guy earlier was right - carpet did not work with pac man very well. I have a vague recollection that zaxxon was the much better game though.

The World of Warcraft board game is sweet. With all the different ways you can level up your characters and the randomness of the quests it is never the same twice. And to top it off, there is an expansion due out in a couple of weeks. Sure it is expensive, but I think it's worth it.
