I had one for a little while.. I never had any issues with it.. I'm not sure if it ever helped, but it did push a lot more air than the stock 360 fans did.. It was just too loud and since I didn't have any issues to begin with, i just sold it on eBay and said to hell with it.

That pelican usb stand makes you stand the 360 vertically. Has anyone had problems standing the 360 vertically as far as discs getting scratched or anything weird?

Yeah, I agree, I bought one and hooked it up and my 360 played for like 5 mins then I would get the 3 red lights of death. I would unhook it, and my 360 would work fine. After trying to get it to work,I just said forget its not really worth messing up my 360 for. I just took it back to best buy and got my money back..

I had the Pelican fan before I got the Intercooler as well.. It sucked bad.. it pushed almost no air and was pretty much a waste of money. I've always had my 360 vertical.. I've never had an issue with disc's being scratched or anything like that.

When I picked up my 360 at Best Buy, the floor guy was pushing this thing really, really hard, despite appearing to not know much about it. It made me not want it.

My 360 is running just fine.

I thought Microsoft has to approve all peripherals for the 360. Also, don't they receive a licensing fee for all peripherals?

I originally got one of these awhile back because my Xbox was crashing while playing GRAW, my GRAW disc was not dirty or damaged, and I did try other copies of the disc, so I assumed my 360 was overheating. However the problems continued even with the intercooler.

Last month I turned my 360 on and the intercooler started to make alot more noise than normal and I was suprised to see I got the red lights for the first time. After I rebooted the 360 a couple times the intercooler got progressivly louder and sounded like it was straining just to run. I disconnected it and I could instantly smell the fried circuitry.

This P.O.S. potentially could cause more harm than good.

This thing is such a piece of shit....I have one and used it once and it caused my 360 to overheat and turn off....haven't used it since and had no problems with my 360....I'm convinced if I continued using it, it would have fried my 360....what a waste of money, they should do a recall for this thing.

This 'Intercooler' just burnt the back of my 360. The plastic parts on the back power plug of the 360 are now completely melted.

This happened two days ago.

I wish I knew about this earlier.

Now my 360 is ruined and my warranty is void.

I noticed that after about a week or two of using the Intercooler my 360 was starting to freeze and was not responding properly to start ups and shut downs via the controller. I even got the 3 red light "ring of death", which was remedied by removing the Intercooler. Since, my 360 has gone back to working like an absolute dream. I did check the back of my unit however, and thankfully there aren't any scorch marks on it. There ARE the beginnings of them on the Intercooler's connector however. Looks like I got it off just in time.

Yeah I had mine and it actually helped more than it hurt. My 360 ran smoother and stayed consistently cooler with it. My 360 is in a very tight place and it over heated all the time until I got the intercooler. But, the other day I got the red circle of death and I unplugged everything and turned everything off. I went to take off the intercooler and I noticed it was stuck. I pulled and pulled and pulled until it finally snapped off, leaving the part of the intercooler that pluggs into the 360 still in the 360. I chipped at it until I realized some sort of adhesive, a glue of some sort was melty and actually seeped down into the 360 which is was caused it to stuck. I took out a blow dryer and used that and it loosed it up enough for me to take out, but it actually took out 2 of the black plastic pieces that cover up the connectors down inside the power cable slot, it didnt effect it any, but now my power cable doesnt snap and lock into place. Close call, almost too close...

Sounds like more horror stories than good. I absoulutely love this addon (minus the noise but you forget about it after awhile and doesn't bother me). I'll take the cooling over the noise anyday. Just a few questions:
1) How long are you running your 360? Are they pretty long sessions?
2) How old is your 360 and or the Intercooler?

Just curious because I bought my 360 last month as well as my Intercooler (had it on since the very first power up) and the thing works like a charm. My friend has a 360 as well and without the Intercooler and you can feel how hot the back is without it.

VOS, from what I have seen toss it before its too late, the 360 gets hot because it gets hot, but that never seems to cause problems the intercooler cools it down to what you consider a good temperature but your 360 is just fine with the stock fans, I leave my 360 on almost at all times never had a problem with it. (And my room is abnormally hot anyway so mine is probably hotter then the average person's 360), Trust me just get rid of it, if you are serious about keeping a fan back there then do what Microsoft recommends and get the Pelecan Fan stand, it plugs into USB so that it wont drain energy from the consoles source.

My 360 definitely runs better with the intercooler than without it. When I turn it on it’s a little loud but after the system heats up it quiets down considerably. I removed it once and played G.R.A.W. at a point I have experienced overheating at and it glitched up the video. I put the intercooler back on and the problem went away. My 360 was bought at launch and with the intercooler it’s been super stable. The various problems sound like house current variances. Ambient air temperatures where you are could be a big factor as it is with air cooled PCs.

Here's a very good review on the Nyko Intercooler versus the Pelican Fan Stand that I found very helpful. They found from three seperatesensors in the CPU, GPU and motherboard what temperatures were produced by the Xbox 360 system with a Nyko Intercooler on it, a
Pelican Fan Stand and the stock fans, all after the system had been playing Oblivion for an hour to make sure it was nice and toasty.

All of these are in Fahrenheit. Intercooler Pelican Stock
CPU 125 129 146
GPU 113 114 125
Motherboard 101 99 105
I'm going to buy a Pelican Fan Stand now that I've seen this. It can't/won't
DESTROY your console like the Intercooler can/does. As you can see both third party fans are comparable and both totally blast the stock
fans. This link is the the article, the readings from the sensors are in the middle of the second page of the article

Do what I do: get a small household desk fan, and blow it at the 360 from behind. It keeps it very cool, and, of course, runs on its own outlet. It's a bit noisy depending on the fan you get, but it's a heckuva better option (cheaper too) than the Intercooler.

I just modded my intercooler as of seeing these stories about it. I ripped out the power passthru and connected the power leads of the fans to a usb cable. Ironically, to get the USB cable I sacrificed (with prejudice) a Nyko Airflo pc joypad, which I havn't used since I use a 360 controller on pc now. I ran the cable thru the hole where the on/off switch was on the intercooler and epoxied the wires together. I also took my sautering iron and melted the edges of the intercooler's plug port so the 360's plug could pass thru the intercooler and into the 360 directly. I could hook up the intercooler to the 360 now if I wanted to, but since it's next to my pc, the usb cord is pretty long and I'll have constant cooling, even after the 360 has been turned off, which is good, since your processor loses all cooling fan power after being turned off, which is bad to a degree. Not having it plugged into the 360 is a plus though. The 360 was much cooler with the intercooler, but I did not want to run the risk of damaging the 360, so modding the intercooler was a necessity.

I got the Nyko intercooler after my first 360 went back to the mothership (ring of death, natch). I pulled it off this evening and inspected the back of the console -- no scorch marks there. I wonder if it doesn't "lock up" with the power connector perfectly every time, which could lead to arcing and scorch marks? I took it off for now just to be safe, but I might have a go at Cheese's USB power mod. That sounds like a good middle ground.

I bought the Intercooler at the same time when Table Tennis came out.

Now, I had my Xbox 360 since late November 2005(just a little over launch day) Games ran fine like Ridge Racer and NFS Most Wanted(the most played game). I usually play on an average 3 hours a day. Ever since Full Auto came out, I had nothing but problems with the console from glitchy graphics to freezing.

I bought the Intercooler, installed it and had absolutely no problems with it. It helped my console from freezing but not the glitchy graphics(flashing black textures)

A little loud but that's why we have volume control. I replaced my first generation 360 with the new batch(August 2006 manufactured) of consoles for a quiet DVD drive and better handling with the graphics(no more glitches) I immediately installed the Intercooler and played away.

It's been a whole month since I got the new console and it works great! No problems at all. I'm sure it'll be the same without the Intercooler although the Xbox would probably get really hot.

No scorch marks on either consoles.

Note: Instead of sending it to Microsoft for repairs, I opted for a newer console with extended warrenty at EB(first one was bought at Wal-Mart) Both 360s are Premium editions.

My intercooler seemed okay, until I started getting red ring errors regularly. Took off the intercooler, no problems. Put it back on - more errors. So I left the thing off and I've not had a red ring error since. This device is just a load of rubbish. Apparently there's a new device out from another company called the Cooler King that does the same job but runs off USB power and also gives you extra USB ports and a VGA port. Anyone tried it?

question:
everyone that is getting scorch marks and melted power outlets, what country are you located? i'm curious if perhaps the intercooler has a problem handling voltage levels from different countries. i honestly have no idea and just grabbing straws but i wonder if that's why some people have MAJOR trouble and it seems to work fine with others.

Some of you are idiots. Your Xbox 360 was designed to cool itself as much as needed as long as you treat it right and put in a well-ventilated spot-- That means not on carpet, not on top of other components, and not in an enclosed space. It needs to have 1/2 inch of space on all sides, like any good computer.

I have a launch console and it runs fine in 8-hour blocks of play, followed by movies and downloads. No overheating. No freezes. No glitching. It works just as it is supposed to.

If your Xbox 360 is overheating (highly unlikely if you follow the advice above and in the manual) then you either have it in a lousy place, or you have a defective unit and should have had it repaired before getting the Intercooler and screwing it up even more.

Most of the "overheat" rumors were message board B.S. started by Xbox-bashing fanboys. Less than 3% of launch consoles had problems (I can attest to that from my retail experience with the launch) and later models have been rock-solid stable.

Most of the time, overheating is caused by user stupidity. You have it the wrong place, or you're treating it poorly. If that's the case then you deserve to have the Intercooler wreck your console and void your warranty. It's really simple: Treat the 360 like a sophisticated computer and not like an NES. Give it space, stability, and room to breathe.

And if your 360 is on the carpeted floor and you're complaining about overheating, then you're an idiot and don't deserve to have nice things.

I've had an intercooler on my 360 for a few months with no problems whatsoever, not only does the 360 seem to run cooler but the discs no longer come out hot like the did before hand. I think most of the problems come from people not getting the power cable snapped in good and tight, when this story first broke I took my intercooler off but after a bit of research I put it right back on.

interesting. I have had it since Nyko put it out and have never seen a problem. If anything, it definetly cooled down the 360 drastically. On another note if you guys have iyour 360 connected directly to a wall jack than your really screwing your xbox period. That may be the cause of all these problems with them. If you don't have a surge protector ( recommend Monster products ) to clean the voltage out and separted it efficiently, than your going to 'cause problems with any electronic device you own. The reason being is that everyday you get spikes of surge throughout your house, anytime you turn on the light for instance will give you a spike every time. This is what 'cause alot of electronics to fail. GET A SURGE PROTECTOR, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!!!
...and knowing is half the battle.

Monster products are overpriced crap. If you want a good surge protector for your 360, spend $35 and get a small UPS from Belkin or APC. It does the trick quite well, and you aren't paying a premium for some colorful fonts and a quirky name.

Even if you just get a surge protector and not a UPS, get one from a company known for power supplies and surge protectors, not from some company that wraps copper cable in a colorful plastic wrapping and charges three times as much for them.

In regards to the last two comments. Surge protectors are nice but this is not always the case. The power brick has a built in surge protector so plugging the brick into a surge protector is a little overkill. I myself have my 360 plugged into a surge protector but Xbox customer support recommends plugging the grick directly into the wall. Also, another good company for surge protectors is Cyber Power. Monster is nice but your paying for the name.

This may not be a surprise ,but for those people who thinks that the 360 dose not need a cooler may be mistaken.

When i brought my 360 (which was recently, 20 of December 2006) i had already planned to make it play backed up games. For this to happen i had open the console and do a few things. I turned it on while it was open, after flashing the firmwire, i felt the outside metal case. It was extremely hot, ill have to say around 40 - 45 degrees Celsius or maybe even more. if the outside of the case was that hot then it would make sense that the motherboard would be running hotter. The reason why people don't notice the heat inside the console is because of the plastic case covering the heat.

After noticing the heat inside the 360 i decided to buy a cooler. i've did a little research and found that the Nyko intercooler cooled the xbox 360 and may extened the life of the console. And now after buying the product i read all these comments about how it stuffs up the 360 and void the warranty. I didn't mind about voiding the warranty (cause i done that already), but i didn't like that fact or rumors that it stuffs up the 360. Like Alex said and Microsoft said, the Nyko intercooler drains power from the 360, therefore damaging the console.

I decided to fix this little problem. I attached a 12v adaptor to the Nyko intercooler; this fixes the problem of it draining power from the 360 console. However I’ve also read problems about it melting. I’m not entirely sure about the melting problem, but I think that the hot air that is being blown out has something to do with it. So I guess the solution is to turn off the 360 after 5 hours or so.

The cooler cools only the ambient temperature. It dose in no way cool the cpu and gpu. Only way to cool those are to put a better heatsink and changing the stock fans. I’ve been using the Nyko cooler for a week or so, absolutely no problems here(no problems before and after the intercooler). I know its early times and something may happen in the future, if it dose ill post it. Ill say it’s an ok product but Nyko should have thought an alternative power source. With all the problems it has caused for people it is best for people not to buy this product.
