OMGWTF! Posting this shows how much you hate Sony.
LMAO
Psaakyrn @ Oct 27th 2006 11:35AM
Frankly though, we should be comparing with the 360 instead of the PSP here, seeing that the 360 is it's competitor. Does anyone has a list of 360 compatable media formats?
Also, there should be a segregation between hardware and data mediums. If they include CD, DVD, and Blueray, they should also include the data storage cards as well.. (assuming the memory cards will be the main method of data transfer between PS3 to computers)

if microsoft enables xvid and divx support with the fall update, as they're rumored to be doing, i will have their mother f'ing babies. it gets really, really, really tiresome converting files to mpeg, even if videora is an excellent stop gap solution.
p.s. yes, i'm a guy, and yes, i would still give birth to microsoft's babies for this. it would make an already very useful media center extender feature significantly more so.

Standardization is dead =(
bobby @ Oct 27th 2006 11:41AM
what do you expect ? joystick is a bias site the bows down to the Wii"s nutz. i cant remember one thing they themselves have said positive about 360 or ps3. they blow up the wii "gc 1.5 for kids". i know i want to be jumping around my livingroom , ducking behind my couch and crap thinking im dodging bullets in redsteel.......... sarcasm. funny how they try to make you think that doing that actually makes you dodge the people shooting at you . lol

And this list will only grow, similar to how the PSP's media list grew.
broseph @ Oct 27th 2006 12:00PM
I was suprised to see recordable Blu-Ray discs at Best Buy yesterday.
MetaHuman @ Oct 27th 2006 11:51AM
They should just add this to the end of the list:
-With time, EVERYTHING
Evan @ Oct 27th 2006 11:55AM
I think it's unlikely Sony would support divx/xvid because that is the codec of choice for pirated videos.
GJM @ Oct 27th 2006 11:57AM
Normally when I buy a console, I just make sure it supports GAMES.
Colin @ Oct 27th 2006 12:24PM
Yellow Dog is already selling their PS3 Linux...

evan: Wrong! That is a lame excuse. Many people(myslef included) convert their movies to store on their HDD for quick access. I have always done this and I always use the DiVX(.avi) format. The video quality is great, it supports 5.1 and the file size is very reasonable. The excuse that this is used by pirates is old and tired and is a slap in the face to someone like me who has invested hundreds if not thousands of dollars in digital media. To tell me to convert almost a hundred movies is not reasonable, allowing the 360/PS3 to support DiVX is! I sure hope MS is smart about this and adds the functionality like many expect them to do. Windows Media Center supports it, so why purposely cripple that functionality. Sorry to get off topic since this is more related to the PS3 but hopefully Sony is smart on this one as well.
gamerx @ Oct 27th 2006 1:05PM
Man who gives a shit about all these useless media formats? Sony spend your time making a good GAMING MACHINE. Give me a decent controller, an Xbox Live calibur online service, and good GAMES. Give me fast loading times and 1st rate hardware quality. Give me excellent customer support/service like Nintendo and MS.
Psaakyrn @ Oct 27th 2006 12:37PM
to #15 razer
I don't know which is true, but I just wanted to mention that being most used for normal copying and being most used for pirated copying are not mutually exclusive.
The ZeroCorpse @ Oct 27th 2006 1:24PM
Xbox 360 also supports AAC (MP4) and audiobook files (M4A / M4B). It's compatible with Windows media programs as well as OS X's iTunes and iPhoto.
And it upconverts DVD (very well!) over VGA.
Robotic House Plant @ Oct 27th 2006 1:27PM
Wouldn't it have been easier to say "VC-1" instead of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264?
It's interesting that although new codecs are supported, Sony is still using MPEG-2 as their codec for Blu-Ray, whereas on the PSP, MPEG-4 was the codec of choice. I wonder what developers will use.
And ATRAC, which I'm assuming is ATRAC3 or 3plus is not widely adopted outside of Sony, although a couple of other companies do support it. I can't think of a single piece of music I own that is coded in ATRAC format.
Absent from the PS3 list are WMA and from both lists, AVI and of course DivX
blahshigg @ Oct 27th 2006 1:04PM
DivX/XviD ARE MPEG-4, as listed. The only question is whether the PS3 will support playback from the hacked-up AVI container.
Ragnarokender @ Oct 27th 2006 1:22PM
I thought people complained it was too much like a computer. I thought the same people wanted the PS3 as a gaming console, not a video/audio player? Make up your damn minds and stop trying to flame on everything that gets decided.
Wild Homes @ Oct 27th 2006 1:21PM
for a lot of gamers slash tech enthusiasts, the next-gen winner is going to be the first console to to shake hands with the Xvid & DivX codecs. only neither Sony nor Microsoft seem willing to just put up and do it. ah well, it _is_ possible this weekend's (presumed) update will fix this problem.
PS right now the 360 doesn't support H.264 either, but since the add-on drive utilises that codec it's widely expected the fall update will give the console that support.
Spore @ Oct 27th 2006 1:25PM
Sweet! PS3 will read 3.5" floppies! I wonder if I can load up Wing Commander. . .
Phranctoast @ Oct 27th 2006 1:48PM
"Wouldn't it have been easier to say "VC-1" instead of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264?"
No.. because vc-1 isnt the same as mp4 avc/h.264.
JodyAnthony @ Oct 27th 2006 2:20PM
#5 (bobby), you do know that #1 wasn't being serious right? did you even bother to read the very small amount of text in this article? there is nothing negative listed (aside from the lack of divx/xvid support, but its not like any of the other consoles support it either, which EVERYONE freely admits to, no matter what they are a 'fanboy' of)
elmer @ Oct 27th 2006 2:48PM
It's extremely odd that they support a codec as complicated as AVC, but not a simpler one like ASP (advanced simple profile) which divx/xvid encoded files usually take advantage of, while they do still support SP (simple profile) MPEG-4 video.
This actually does stink of directly attempting to block downloaded divx/xvid videos when it's clearly something they could have added on a whim.
Lekko @ Oct 27th 2006 3:46PM
uh... PS3 can run Linux, which can play just about anything. If you don't like it, you could probably get a Linux video conversion program and have the PS3 convert whatever file to its own native format. A pain, yes.. but a solution.
thunderleg @ Oct 27th 2006 3:46PM
The only way Sony would support any variant of MPEG4 is with ridiculous proprietary Sony encoding software, or perhaps playback is only enabled for that idiotic Memory Stick.
I have absolutely no reason to believe anything else.
Brian Hoyt @ Oct 27th 2006 5:00PM
Why no SACD? You would think Sony would want their advanced audio codec to be there.
Jeffrey @ Oct 27th 2006 5:54PM
@28 Well you can use MPEG4 on the PSP as it is.
@29 The official specs have support for SACD, it even has the logo on the machine itself.
Kyle @ Oct 27th 2006 8:10PM
Just wondering, will dual-layer Blu-ray discs be compatible too?
Peter S. @ Oct 27th 2006 10:45PM
WTF? No Laserdisc? Ghey.
Anonymousaurus @ Oct 28th 2006 4:18PM
-yo where the hell the MacrAdobeMedia at?
DeShaun @ Oct 30th 2006 10:06AM
Betamax please.
I don't know...I just don't see the point in these systems supporting so damn much. Most gamers are somewhat tech savvy...well, at least enough to have a computer that supports all the formats mentioned and more, probably a line out to their TV or a good viewing quality monitor, and some form of stand-alone player like a dvd player that ALSO plays all that other stuff. The only thing I see worth noting is the Blu-Ray, which is something we've known forever. I don't really care about any of it, to be honest.
If it hasn't been mentioned already, support for other media cards via USB card readers would be great. This linux thing makes things interesting, but then again, linux targets a small audience (in comparison to just gaming and PC gaming in general).
As I see it, I still think the PS3 is a machine whose processor overpowers the rest of its contained hardware. Years from now, the cell's potential will be discovered, but the rest of the hardware won't be able to fully take advantage. 10 year shelf life under the current configuration is farfetched.
