Today's hottest game video
Maybe we should call it "Today's snooziest game video," because the guys at PlayStation 3 Magazine are lucky enough to have a working PlayStation 3 unit (what else?) sitting in their offices, yet they make it look like they're talking about the fuel intake on a 1978 John Deere tractor. Show some excitement! Maybe raise your voice a little bit, or jump up and get down on it. Do something. Millions of people wanna be fondling that thing, and they'd probably be howling with delight while they did it.We've seen human resources video presentations that are more exciting. Zzz. What makes it more noticeable is that we've seen these guys look a heck of a lot more exciting when handling a PS3. Maybe they've been up non-stop since they got it. We would have. Anyhow, they attempt to provide the world with a look at the PS3 startup process, and they sort of loosely take us through the steps.
"Once you get to this stage, it's already assigned the joypad a channel." Well, we hope so, because like the people commenting on the video, we also noticed that this unit takes a long time to start up. Also, you have to hold down the power button until it beeps to turn it off, and once it's in startup mode, you can't shut it down until it's done. Hopefully people won't mind the long load times, or the time it takes to shut the thing down. Ever try turning off your PC, and then accidentally hit the power button again after it's shut down? You have to wait until the entire startup process is done before you can shut it down, just like the PS3. Mildly annoying, but not a deal killer.
Quote of the video: when explaining how the power light changes color to show disk activity, *pause* "It's just thinking about it."
Check out the video after the jump, although you might want some caffeine for yourself on behalf of the PSM3Mag.com guys.
Plus, astute viewers out there might have noticed that our "Today's hottest game video" hasn't quite been daily just yet. Sometimes the hottest video is the same from day to day, so we won't re-post those. So we might have to find a new moniker for this new video segment. Just be assured that we're watching tons of simulated World of Warcraft sex, just for you.

Yeah... he does seem bored. I think the funniest part is that its hooked up to a TV that is really a POS. And I don't even have an HDTV.
bp @ Oct 27th 2006 2:27AM
its the size of a buick
todizlla @ Oct 27th 2006 2:30AM
lets see what all the people that ragged about the size of the 360s power supply have to say about the size of this behemoth. although i expected this because of the heatsink and airflow this thing must require
Usedtabe @ Oct 27th 2006 2:32AM
wow....just wow
Usedtabe @ Oct 27th 2006 2:34AM
THats another thing I'v found funny about the PS3. The xbox haters used to rag on it about its size, even some reviewers. Yet, I rarely hear anything about this brick of a PS3. Why is that?
FuzzyPickles @ Oct 27th 2006 2:35AM
lol PS3 is hueg
creepy @ Oct 27th 2006 2:51AM
sweet... less than a month more to wait!
rokobungi @ Oct 27th 2006 2:55AM
nicely edited!! didn't show a single segment demonstrating the load times of the ps3 (also I like how he console itself doesn't seem to load at startup it dumps you to the menu gaining those valuable extra seconds of loadtime. I expect a fmv at the beginning of every game to hide loadtimes also..... Yeah I know ps2 and 360 do this too but I'm sure someone defending the ps3 will pretend I'm praising the 360) ps.. yeah I'm still pissed that lik-sang is shut down I got half my ds games from them now I'll have to pay $70 to ebay scalpers instead of $50 for my import DS games
creepy @ Oct 27th 2006 3:03AM
lik-sang will be back... again. relax, mroko-bung-bungi. they've been sued to "oblivion" more than once, even by nintendo.
Me @ Oct 27th 2006 3:04AM
Funny how you say the load time is long for the PS3, when in fact it's actually fast...so is the connection between the controller and the console. you guys are crazy over here.
Aex @ Oct 27th 2006 3:14AM
That is kinda funny usedtabe.
Here are the match ups.
Xbox (8 lbs) 12.5 x 10.5 x 4
Ps3 (11 lbs) 12.8 x 10.8 x 3.9
When I first saw an xbox and picked one up, I thought wow this thing is freaking huge... and its heavy as hell. I got over that in like a minute tho, and started playing a game. Maybe people aren't bitching about the size, because its not new. Xbox did the size thing, so if you like xbox insulting the ps3 cause of the size is kinda the pot calling the kettle black, and if you like sony insulting the ps3 is kind of dumb... cause sony makes it... Tho if you like the wii, insulting the ps3 over the size makes sense.
I don't mind the size now, mind you had the ps2 been the size of the ps3, I would have blown a gasket... Til of course I set it down in the same spot it would be for the next 4 years and never worried about it again.
Bender @ Oct 27th 2006 9:41AM
I didn't think that took long at all to get to the start menu. Games might be different but these 10 seconds or whatever really mean nothing to me - that's just enough time to insert a disk or sit down and get comfortable.
Sean @ Oct 27th 2006 3:58AM
Come on, they're bored as shit because the PS3 is the snoozer of the century. What a lame console. Jesus that thing is bigger than my car.
Usedtabe @ Oct 27th 2006 3:51AM
I know what you mean Aex....A system's look never really bothered me. I just found it funny that on the internets it was a big deal, but thats probably because the internets are serious business ;)
Honestly, I wish the 360 would have been a little bigger, that way they could have put more cooling systems in it and not have had those overheating issues. Appearances mean nothing on a gaming system, IMO
jason cubs bear bulls rule 4life @ Oct 27th 2006 3:54AM
#10 a website said in order to make the game gengi for the ps3 load time to be fast you have to save part of the game to the hardrive i think it was from 15 secs to like 7 and i don't remember what website
jason cubs bear bulls rule 4life @ Oct 27th 2006 4:08AM
every time i see a ps3 it makes me want to cook a hamburger on the george forman grill lol. i would like to say that the whole thing with waiting for the system to power up to turn it off is going to be annoying. i would also like to say don't buy a gaming system at launch and wait for all the bug to be out of the system. also the games don't look good for a year or 2 and all there will be all the system updates if u wait and tons of games and maybe a price drop. i know this cuz i bought a 360 at launch and i got bore of it until graw came out. i wanna get a ps3 but $600 for a console is way to much cuz i even got pissed buying a 360 at launch. even if i wait 2-3 yaers for a price drop its not likely cuz it has so much technology in it and sony will lose tons of mone on it, it will take a while for a ps3 to drop in price but when it gets down to 300-400 dollar range i will buy one. I RECOMMEND BUYING A NINTENDO Wii AT LAUNCH CUZ ITS DIFFERENT AND CHEAP SO U CAN BUY ONE AND U WON'T GET BORED OF IT THATS A INVESTMENT. a year after ps3 you won't get bored of cuz they will have developed alot more stuff for it just like i am not bored of my 360 any more. just trying to tell be not to muy a ps3 at launch unless ur going to sell it on ebay which basically everyone with preorders is planning to do
p.s. sry for bad grammer to lazy to fix it

I think Sean said it all.
Metalmurphy @ Oct 27th 2006 4:29AM
"we also noticed that this unit takes a long time to start up." lol, compared to what? I counted 16 seconds, the 360 takes about 20 seconds:

FuzzyPickles @ Oct 27th 2006 4:31AM
I agree with the above statement about buying a Wii at launch but not a PS3. Nintendo already has a great reputation in this department, and Wii seems like even a safer bet because it runs on the same architecture as the GameCube. Whatever you have to say about the selection of GCN games, I don't think you can argue with how the console itself ran in comparison to the PS2. Never hanging up (in my experience), short loading times, seeming to perform beyond what its specs would have first indicated--just came across to me like a well-designed, thought-out, efficient machine and I'm sure the Wii will be no different. On the other hand... the PS3 is looking like a pig.
Metalmurphy @ Oct 27th 2006 4:31AM
Ah, and you guys bashing it because of its size... well at least it doesn't have a huge super hot powerbrick... add that and then see which one's bigger...
JPRacer @ Oct 27th 2006 10:42AM
Boring...
DarkTetsuya @ Oct 27th 2006 4:48AM

That's a really slick machine; high gloss black and those finger sensitive buttons. If you're gonna make a big machine, thats how to do it.
And, its quiet, not this constant WHIR WHIR WHIR WHIR WHIR of the 360 (lol... you know its true)... gotta love that 12x DVD eh?
I see Kevin Kelly is back .. roll up your sleeves folks.
gamerx @ Oct 27th 2006 5:58AM
OMG what a slow inefficient POS. man its gonna be Wii60 hands down this generation. let see...around 6 million X360 consoles sold, not shipped, to date. 6 million Wii consoles guaranteed sold by March 2007. Where does that leave PS3? 500,000 units for launch! forget about it. Sony even admitted its 2 million units by end of December 2006 target might not happen.
Once momentum starts rolling, its hard to overcome it. Look at DS. It came to market first, dominates worldwide now. X360 came to market first, already 6 million sold.
The only reason Sega pulled the plug on Dreamcast was cuz they didnt have any money, not cuz people werent buying consoles.
Sony is last place this generation, like it or not.
h2c @ Oct 27th 2006 5:59AM
I liked the tone of the video. It was no nonsense - just a straight up narrated showing of the PS3 starting up.
I much prefer clear and concise news bits like this video over digging through noisy and cluttered nonsense, like http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/index.html or http://ps3.ign.com
Ogi @ Oct 27th 2006 6:24AM
Since the PS3 doesn't have a tray for the disc, do you think that during insertion/ejection of the blue ray disc might scratch it the disc itself?
chad @ Oct 27th 2006 7:02AM
It doesn't seem to be "silent" like others have claimed, listen to the video at 3:23. Its about the same as the 360.
chad @ Oct 27th 2006 7:20AM
One other thing that hasn't been addressed, is the fact that it doesn't spit out the disk far enough to grab it by the middle. With how sensitive blue ray disks are to scratches this can't be a good thing.
Zeromaru @ Oct 27th 2006 7:38AM
This has probably been mentioned before (don't have time to read the comments), but if you accidentally start up a PC again you can just hit F1/F8/Del/Option (depends on your computer, lattermost for Macs) to jump into BIOS/Startup disk then press and hold your power button for a hard powerdown, rather than waiting for an OS to boot up (you could just hard powerdown during loading, but that has a tendency to cause problems because the harddrive is writeable, however the ROM, where the BIOS is stored, is not).
Zeromaru @ Oct 27th 2006 7:38AM
And my point being, of course, that that's just another thing a PC has over a PS3.
JJ @ Oct 27th 2006 7:49AM
Chad i think you may be confused, the hting is Bluray discs are supposed to be "immune" to scratches due to the new coating 3m designs for it thats supposed to be able to withstand Sand paper.
The problem was though, that one of the samsung players had problems reading through smudges and such, so it wasn't the disc, it was the player that had the problem.
Zero...there's tons of things PCs have over consoles of course... that goes without saying, but it also goes both ways though.
JJ @ Oct 27th 2006 7:58AM
Gamerx, DS is doing well not just because it came to market first (before the PSP Ninty had VERY few competitors to its throne...last one was what? Wonderswam? Game gear? Nintendo could survive off the portable market alone if they somehow lost console sales)
and as for Dreamcast, despite the reason, it still failed, it failed to be the money maker for Sega so they had topull out...a failure is a failure.
and yes the 360 DID come to market first, yet its still slightly underperforming. Do you osmehow think sales will pick up when it has competition? There's no way to determine who will win this gen at this point, yeah MS has a nice lead, but its not where you start out at, its where you finish at. (I mean you do realize 360 only had 500k at launch too right? and that ended up doing ok so far correct? Dont be a hypocrite now).
I mean if you're going straight with the came to market first thing...well PS2 came to market and its dominating the 360 as is the original Xbox (100+mil and 25mil to 6mil) so forget about it right?
Truth of the matter is we wont know whose doing the best until probably DEc 2007 once all systems have been out at least a year. We could get surprised.
What if Wii or PS3 become the fastest selling consoles to date? With numbers hat rival or exceed the 360? What if Ninty and Sony sell 6 million units in 6 months? 9 months? They would have a faster sell through rate than the 360 did even with competition.
So in the end we dont know WHAT is going to happen, not to mention launches are never definitive of the system itself.
THe 360 launch sucked, i didn't buy a game for it until February...but i love the system now. Just like i'm sure i'll love my Wii and PS3 despite the faact there's only 2 games at launch on either one i really want.
killr0y @ Oct 27th 2006 8:18AM
what a piece of crap. And talk about long boot up times! My 360 boots to dashboard in about 10 seconds, that thing took about 50% longer to boot to its ugly ass dash! and it takes 5 seconds to power off! LOL "park the hard drive"... That's funny, because harddrives have autoparked for the past 10 years, dude! Nice try though. Its just a clunky piece of crap and that's all there is to it.
Josh @ Oct 27th 2006 9:20AM
So why do they have to have plastic on the table? Does someone in the office have a problem of spilling drinks?
crono141 @ Oct 27th 2006 8:23AM
That 3M coating hasn't been implemented yet. Not exactly sure why, I think there's either a manufacturing problem or the current players on the market can't read through it.
Or... a... third thing.
Autoloading drives WILL scratch the disk. Usually very minor scratches though.
Just because a design was patented in 1999 doesn't mean they were going to use it. Wii's tech still pushed sixaxis into the market.
On Gamecube stability: I've only ever had 1 or 2 lockups. 1st was in Metroid Prime, I think the other was SSBM. Its never happened since.
The Intangible Fact~Cardinals Will Win @ Oct 27th 2006 8:38AM
It looks like an alright system. Thats all I can say. I like my 360 though.
Moogle @ Oct 27th 2006 8:39AM
People act giddy when they've just recieved a new toy and are seeing it for the first time. Not when they've been using it for weeks and are explaining some technical details to a camera.
I was in a photo shoot for some video game furniture. The photographers were getting seriously annoyed with the gamers - we showed no emotion at all when we were having fun, made for lame pictures. Eventually they ended up telling us to pose for most of them, and taking the rest while the games were off. The Wii is going to be the only system where people actually *look* like they're having fun when they really are. (Yes, the PS3 and 360 will be/are fun too.)
Seriously, Joystiq was hating on the 360 AFTER they received product. I'm sure the PS3 will have its problems as well, but they're really jumping the gun on the OMGAWFUL. Heh, maybe they know that they won't have anything to complain about when they get it. :)
Hmm. *goes to read year old Today in Joystiqs*
"Microsoft commits itself to saving PC gaming"
"Tell Microsoft which Xbox games you want to play on 360"
"The fan community takes a break from Revolution controller mockups to work on some conceptual portable Xbox pics. And, of course, it would not be a day without the OrigenXbox360.com website making headlines."
"Microsoft more officially announced the upcoming Xbox Live pricing to coincide with the Xbox 360"
"Sony reiterates a Spring 2006 launch window, but threw away 10,000 potential customers in the process - it is okay, because Microsoft was there to pick up the slack."
"Is the PlayStation 3 losing development support?"
"Joystiq finishes its weeklong introspection into the Xbox 360" ( Link for that one http://www.joystiq.com/2005/10/14/joystiq-hands-on-xbox-360-wrap-up/ )
Hey, found a negative one! "Xbox 360 trojan horse; retailers doomed"

That guy in the video must really enjoy turning that PS3 on and off...I mean, he does it like 5 or 6 times. Surely they could have explained more than just how to power the thing up and down for 5 minutes.

chad @ Oct 27th 2006 8:57AM
Here is a better video demonstrating how long it takes to turn on the PS3 and load a game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L5QXg2vYQM
From the time they start the game to the time it actually loads the game is 20 seconds!!!
The Realist @ Oct 27th 2006 9:16AM
The Blu-Ray scratch problem will be an issue for a while. There is .1mm of plastic between the data and the rest of the world on a BD. DVD/HD-DVD/CD has .6mm of plastic protecting the data. That's an 83% reduction in protection!
How many of you have scratched CD's? Sony knows this. Remember when BD launched they came in cartridges like mini-discs. Be really careful with your BD games and movies!!!
Yuki~Summer Ver.~ @ Oct 27th 2006 9:45AM

WAIT, how about strippers jump out of the PS3, its big enough to hold one, am I right??? Eh??? Guys???
Sorry, had to be stupid, its friday.
ill trooper @ Oct 27th 2006 10:06AM
The guy is conveying information, I don't think he's bored at all. Start-up and load times look exactly the same as my 360. The controller syncs up faster than my 360. Machine is smaller than the 360 when you account for the 360 power block. I'm interested in a comparison of the noise levels of each machine. My 360 gets annoyingly loud sometimes, as it's right near me in my home office. That's where the PS3 will reside also, so I'm wondering which is quieter.
Cool.

I wonder if the game'll keep playing for a while if you take out the disc mid-game. Y'know, like the PS2.
