My friend and I would try to make each other laugh with "power blast" - blowing as hard into the cartridge as possible for just 1 second. The louder the noise, the more amusing it was. It did work, though.

One time, that same friend went nuts and put INK all over the connectors on his cartridges. I have no idea what set him off, it was something never spoken about whenever I went over there. One day I just went and saw a paper towel on the kitchen counter with the name of the game written on it, and the q-tips actually used to clean them under it. Super Mario 2 and Life Force must have had 7 or 8 blue-ink covered cotton swabs each. The way it was "not discussed" led me to believe he got in a ton of trouble.

I'm assuming the alcohol mentioned in the original article here came into play when his dad cleaned them.

If you poke around the interweb, you'll find some articles about the primary cause of Bad-Connection Blues: the Nintendo anti-piracy ("lockout") chip. Most people who were NES fans will recall turning on the machine and seeing the title screen for a second or two, then having the power cycle, blank out, show the screen, blank out, etc... -- this is caused by a failure to "authenticate" a legitimate (licensed) game. Most of the time, the important pins (e.g. memory) connected just fine, but the communication between the on-cartridge lockout chip and the chip in the console was spotty or just didn't work. This results in the trademark blink-blink-blink. So, by cutting a single pin on a single chip inside your NES, you can totally eliminate the random-restart type of dirty-cartridge failure. Definitely worthwhile!

Power blowing. But in short, controlled bursts... you get more velocity this way. The goal is to expel the air out in a short period of time, not a long period of time (the harmonica method is flawed).

I Lick my lips before blowing to moisten them(Spittle is the key). left to right or the opposite doesn't matter. when inserting the cartrige, insert it in until
it first touches the contacts. then push down until the back of the cartridge touches the lip of the cartridge slot and cannot go down anymore. then "wiggle" the cartridge in left to right until it go's down. then insert another cartridge in on top to hold it down. if this don't work, clean the contacts on the cartridge with acitone. DO NOT USE NAIL POLISH REMOVER!!!!. go to home depo and by a gallon jug of acitone for $5.00 and it will last for ever. if you took your NES apart,... ...don't look at me like you never did ;-)... ...you could remove the sheet metal protective cover and the plastic deck. put these parts in the closet. oyu can insert the cartridge directly in to the contacts on the cpu board, then put somthing heavy on top. I used a whisky bottle(everyone knows alcohol always works!).
