Is it me or did Adam Sessler seem really calm in that video.

He must have been taking his medication that day, because he wasn't the "CRAZY IN YOUR FACE X-TREME TO THE MAX ADAM SESSLER" that we see on G4 these days.

He actually seemed like he would have made a decent news anchor back then.

"Now, explain to Jr that he needs to stay within range and sight of the wiibar so that the wii can pick up his coordinates.

Nintendo is showing something that works (pointing and gestures) and extending that to something that doesnt (hiding behind couches)."

It does work.
Nintendo does not show you shooting THROUGH couches, which any moron could think of, even juniors.
They show hiding behind couches, getting up from behind it, aiming and firing, which of course works, since you're sending a signal to the Wii.

I'm glad to see the Atari 2600 mentioned as a comment. Many often forget that a lot of cutting edge technology was released or developed for the VCS, including wireless control, force feedback, motion sensing control, body control, voice control, 3-D glasses, and even mind control (!)

As a note, I had that Pelican Tilt-Pak for my N64, and it sucked nuts.

You had to set your "neutral" position, and then hold the controller like that 100% of the time, unless of course you wanted to move. That sounds simple enough, but holding a 2 handed device perpindicular to the ground is not easy, and got uncomfortable fast. It was an interesting way to play Star Fox, but since no game was designed with a Pelican accessory in mind, it was always inferior to the control stick. To be honest, I used it more for its "turbo" function (3rd party turbo abilities on a 1st party controler, hell yeah!)

Now, I played the Wii at the Fusion Tour (i was kinda drunk.. there was a bar, and it was close to the line, and I had like, 4 vodka-tonics, so, take this with a grain of salt) and it was a blast. Previous concerns for graphics and lack of HD and digital surround were out the window. It really is just pure, fun.

So where does this leave Sixaxis? Somewhere in the middle of course. It's not full blown motionsensing, but it isn't tacked-on either. Well, compared to the tilt-pak style of tacked on. I would be willing to bet that games that offer the option of tilt or control stick will mostly be played as control stick. However, Sony can still have games designed where you can control say, a ship, the camera and a turret all at the same time, independent of each other, which is something a non-motion sensing 6AX can't do.

It's true what a previous poster said. I think it was post number 25.

How come a controller that came out in like 1999 has tilt AND rumble and 7 years later Sony can't include rumble in their controller? It's b.s. that they say "it's so last gen." They are trying to believe their own lie. They ommited it because they would most likely had to pay Immersion for including rumble. It sounds stupid, but that is one of the reasons I don't want to get a PS3. I'm pretty sure they will eventually include rumble in their controller because a lot of people will be complaining (a lot of people have already started). Oh yeah and with 600 bucks, I could pay off a credit card.

Sony should just pay the damn fee and avoid the countless lawsuits. Microsoft did and I think Nintendo did (not sure if Nintendo infringed on Immersions patent though).

p.s. I remember reading comment from somebody in a forum that I can't remember at this time. It was hilarious. Something along the lines of "Sony should quit the electronics business and they should become a law firm."

Good, because, you know, that would be going backwards.

I think they are both gimmick.

Cept Nintendo has more to lose, because they don't have anything to fall back on. If the wiimote fails, the wii will. If the "sixaxis" fails, then the ps3 has a ps1 controller with analog buttons. I think the Nintendo fanboys have more fervor than the Sony fanboys because of this. They know if they don't push and push and push this controller, it is possible it may fall flat on its face. Just as Sony fanboys know that if they don't push and push and push the Blu-ray, the PS3 has the same possibility.

Then comes the way of point out whose side who is on. If you think the wiimote will fail, you're a Sony Fanboy. If you think blu-ray will fail, you're a Nintendo Fanboy. If you think both will fail, you're a MS Fanboy.

I find it funny :)

"Nintendo believed thier system needed more "extra features" after seeing 360 Media Center in action, so they put together the Photo Channel, essentially a useless feature"

So would you rather have them let you use SD cards but not allow the viewing of pictures / videos that are on them? That doesn't make sense. just seems logical especially considering they ditched dvd playback. i think this just kinda inadvertently 'competes' with the 360's media center capabilities.

Nintendo was the first to make a game for an existing platform that was created specifically for a tilt sensor. Kirby Tilt'n'Tumble was released in the year 2000 (Japan) for the Game Boy Color. The game was extremely intuitive and you could tilt the Game Boy Color to roll Kirby around. You could even bounce over things by using a "frying pan" flicking motion, tossing Kirby into the air and flipping enemies upside-down.

The Pelican controller was a third party controller where the tilt function simply duplicated the analog thumbstick. Nintendo was the first to build a game around it. There may have been tilt-sensitive games before, but I would expect that these were arcade games. Microsoft's Sidewinder Freestyle Pro included Motocross Madness, but you would be hard-pressed to say that it felt like it was made for the controller. Rather, it seemed to be the other way around.

Optimus, you forget to realise that the wiibar is NOT meant for coordinates. Therefore, you could be swinging like a sword at the back of the room facing the wall. The sensor bar is for the mapping of pixel perfect accuracy. Also, I swear I heard that the SIXAXIS only has a tilt function, measuring tilt by 15 degrees on X,Y and Z planes, but no accelerometers like Nintendo, or at least work nothing like the Wiimote.

Can some people name the games that are going to be released for the Wii, cos as far as I know, they are all pretty much remakes of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Monkey Ball, Wario, Rayman and the rest are either kiddy games like Spongebob or games that are gonna be on every other console anyway like Call Of Duty 3.
I mean if this really is it then it just confirms in my mind I will not be buying a Wii, cos I hate these kind of games, and as one person has already said on this page, we were playing mario and zelda on the n64, and every bloody ninntedo console before it.

I say it should be PS360 all the way!!!!!!!

If you don't have a DVD player, I really advise getting a PS2. It's really cheap nowadays and you get a good games library as well. Of cause, if you do not trust Sony products, you can always get another DVD player for a relatively low cost.

Thanks for the links! I was trying to find some concrete information on how the Current competition is actually hurting the games industry, and that link does a good explanation. :}

motion sensative controllers have been around for alot of years and to say sony stole the idea off nintendo is just ridiculous.

if you gotta say one has stole then the other has too since it aint new tech and as for nintendo's way of useing it that aint new either what about the iToy from sony you can move your arms and legs ect to move your characters on screen just like the Wii.

so has nintendo stole the idea from sony's iToy ? and i dont think sony have done the motion sensative as a last minute idea to combat the Wii since the iToy does that quite nicely and i think the Wii remote is going to get tireing very quickly i can see peeps soon not useing it as it will be arm aching and leg aching and soon get fedup with that and go back to the normal controller.

where as sony's controller you can sit down and use it and is more convienent than standing up and waveing your arms and legs around that is ok for the odd game now and then but not for all games .

and as for the rumble i dont think sony has left it out because of the lawsuit from Immersion imo they left it out as it would most likely affect the movement since it is all in the one controller but the Wii has a motion addon that you place infront off your
TV which is how it works out the position of the controller ie if it is moveing forward backwards left right ect ect and therefore cannot be affected by Rumble.

@ #65, why the hell would you need a 5th DVD player in your house. Your PC plays em, your XBox or PS2 plays thenm, why the hell does Nintendo need to boost console price to add in a feature EVERYONE ALREADY HAS IN 5 OTHER DEVICES?! Also I could barely see a person swinging around an ugly big SIXAXIS controller, compared to a sleek Wii controller.

@ #64, Are you kidding me? So you think Zelda is a kiddy game? Might I add the average gamer, according to statistics, is 33 years old? Bet you never saw that coming. Launch games include Zelda, which is a brand new series, Rayman(NOTHING like the other Rayman games), CoD 3, Red Steel, and many other games.

For anyone who thinks Nintendo has all 1st party and kiddie games, you are simple retarded. Nintendo has been in talks with Take Two, the owners of Rockstar Games, and they have a much, much more expansive library this time around. Developers really see it as a profitable and smart move to develop games for the Wii, due to the vast hype. Nintendo doesn't even need to advertise to gamers. Just post new footage of Zelda and you'll have nerds have orgasms all over the world. lol

Many claim Sony cares more about its gamers and consumers than Nintendo, and I find that utter bullsh*t. Is Sony not the one who gives out explosive batteries, rootkits on your CDs, DRM, and to make it worse, they force Lik-Sang to close down its doors for the stupidest of reasons. Thousands of gamers relied on buying games, not only for PS2, but for other systems, and Sony stopped that.

To the person who said Nintendo has no fallback if the Wii fails........BZZZ, wrong. As far as it has been media wise, everyone is praising the Wii with great enthusiasm. I hardly doubt this little machine will flop. If it happens to do so down the road, there's also the portable market, which Nintendo continues to dominate. You know, the DS Lite? If you didn't know it's that "little portable that could" that's beating the pants off the PSP.

Optimus:

Duuuuuuuuuude, do you even know what metaphorical means?

Okay, metaphorical is the opposite of literal. By taking something literally you are only looking at the face value. If something is metaphorical, that means it is more like a representation of something.

It should be no stretch of the imagination to assume that the Wii trailers and marketing is meant to be taken metaphorically, especially the ad you keep mentioning about kids ducking behind the couch while playing Red Steel. We should all know that we don't have to actually duck behind a couch to avoid being shot in the game, it's just common sense (even to uninformed non-gamers). The marketing is simply intended on showing how you are more 'in the game' (as I stated previously) with the Wii than with a traditional controller.

You're either taking Nintendo's marketing (and life in general) FAR to literally, or you're just trying to spin Nintendo's deliberately metaphorical marketing to be literal statements in an effort to decry them.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not the latter. Here, some reading you might find beneficial:

comments are hilarious.

the wiimote was a great idea combining two functions (point and tilt). It was neat but not completely original.

the SIXAXIS was a tacked on little feature to steal some of Nintendo's thunder.

Nintendo is not kiddy, Nintendo is not at fault for some games that might appear to be kiddy that were not made by nintendo but appeared on their hardware anyway.

take this sony fanboys!

Zelda > Genji 2

Excite Truck > Riiiiiiidge Racerrrr

Tony Hawks downhill Jam > Tony Hawk's project 8

Wiimote > SIXAXIS

yeah, call me a fanboy if you wish, but I really hate sony's controllers, consoles, and first party games, I just love the third party games that come out on their system and no others.

I've got my wii preordered, picking it up launch day and I'm gonna have shitloads of fun whereas sony fanboys will be out shopping for HDMI cables if they were rich enough to buy a PS3 and lucky enough to get one.

Xbox360 = Wii > PS3

The thing is, Sony claims they couldn't do this before because of the costs to manufacture the controller claiming it would cost over 50 bucks, when back in 99 there was one with rumble AND motion sensing for 30 bucks, so this really proves that Sony only brought out the controller to compete with the Wii and they took out rumble because of Immersion, not the cost or "impossibility" of it.

Everyone keeps saying that the motion sensor in the wii is required to play all games, but its not. The DBZ game being ported to the wii lets you play it on the gamecube controller. it's just like how not all games on the ds use the touch screen (mario kart anyone?). and if ive learned anything from the ds, then for about the first 8 months or some, anything not made buy nintendo will suck ass on the wii. after that, the games will get better has everyone gets use to programming for it. then there will be smiles for all
