Today's hottest game video: New Wii promo trailer
Nintendo fanboys gushed all over YouTube (and their pants!) today at a new promotional trailer for the Wii. For those who have yet to pick up on the console maker's subtle formula for making commercials, we'll guide you through the process:- Find a group of people of varying age, ethnic background, gender, and height.
- Give them all Wiimotes.
- Have them stare into the camera and smile while they wave their arms maniacally.
- If need be, splice footage as a means to explain why people may be shaking their arms maniacally at the screen (else the audience might think these Wiimotes are magically controlling us -- you, sir, will not make a marionette out of me).
You might notice a dichotomy between the groups playing certain games. Wii Sports had a family of players, Excite Truck attracted a teenage audience of male and female. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Twilight Princess, however, were both played by the loner twenty-something male sitting in a dark room. Are you trying to tell us that our 80-year-old Irish albino grandmothers won't get a kick out of wielding two samurai swords in a Yakuza-inspired environment?
Check out the video after the jump.

Makes me want to buy a Wii at launch (but I won't, waiting 'till a must have game comes out first [Zelda doesn't count, it's on the 'cube])

I wish there was more Zelda advertising.
I remember back in E32004 when they first showed it off, it garnered so much attention.
No everyones all over Wii.
I think they should advertise Zelda and glorify it as the game of the year and then state profusly that its only on the Wii.
That would generate more hype and sales in my eyes.
Cherry Ghost @ Oct 29th 2006 12:47AM
Jeez, did Reggie Fils-Aime steal your lunch money Mr. Miller? It's an advertisement, you know, what a company puts out to sell their product; if you haven't heard by now Nintendo's strategy is to appeal to as many people as possible.
Personally I think the clip should've shown pale, zit-faced, overweight teenagers complaining about how Red Steel isn't 1:1 and then yelling up to their Moms for more Hot Pockets.

John - So you're advocating that Nintendo...should lie?
I'm pretty damn certain that this will be Nintendo's last console, and they will shift the focus to handhelds, and software for Sony and Microsoft's consoles..and wouldn't this be best for everyone involved? A console that is already so outdated powerwise...I just can't fathom how they expect that to work out for the length of an entire console cycle.

And you're right Ross...
All those "complex graphics" are sure to be killer...

socrates they might as well say that...
As the only way you'll be getting Zelda on the Cube is to buy it online...

Once again Nintendo has set us all up for disappointment...
And shown that they really don't care about the gamer...

I really think they could have chosen some better looking dudes for the red steel and metroid one, I think they were going for intense but they just ended up looking odd. Not to mention trauma centre dude. He just looked kind of creepy.
Not a bad ad all the same, still not as good as that sketch one though.

Yeah, totally. Nintendo sux!!11
As we ALL know, games can only be fun if you can rip someone's stomach lining from their body and devour it. Or if you can aim your gun just right to blow someone's body to pieces.
That's the only way they can be fun. Of course, why didn't I see this before. I should throw away all of my E and T rated games. Goodbye Katamari Damacy! Goodbye Metroid Prime! Goodbye Super Smash Bros. Melee! You aren't M-rated, so you suck!
Come on now. You're not even trying anymore.
Ark @ Oct 29th 2006 1:19AM
That's the promo for Mexico's EGS (Electronic Game Show), a crappy event of videogame. So expensive, an over 200-person line for just play 3 o less minutes and the PS3 room was just a rotating stuff with the console and 4 TV's showing old trailers.
Oh yes...if someone buy the VIP ticket, they can play before the other people who don't have it. And it's soooooo expensive.
In Latin America these people are just using "exploits" made by the hype.
Ritz @ Oct 29th 2006 1:23AM
I'm just as baffled behind for the reasons why Wario Ware isn't ready for launch. Obviously it's not for the graphics. I imagine it will be for more crazy mini-games. That shouldn't hurt.
Who gives a damn about the ratings. Unless the game is rated Early Childhood, I have no problem playing the game. "E is for everyone", not "E is for kids", amirite? If it's fun to play, its fun to play.
And check your stories, too. Joystiq has already updated that Zelda will be available in normal retail stores come Decemeber. Still a kick in the teeth for GameCube owners, but regardless, it will be available.
Wait another 20 days before you decide on whether Nintendo has disapointed us or not. Until then, sit and wait.
ABigSmall @ Oct 29th 2006 1:24AM
socrates and elmber92413, you guys are so wise and knowledgeable! Of course you know how successful the Wii will be even without trying out any Wii games. And specifically to you, socrates, how did you brilliantly figure out that a console's processor speed is directly proportional to its success? You know, even though the PS2, the least graphically able of the current=gen consoles, captured the largest audience. But let's not cloud the issue with facts. In other words, I highly praise you, as you certainly live up to your name.
Oh and elmer92413, your abundant usage of ellipsis and punctuation mark-triplets adds a literary glint of wonder to your comment. As does the fragment about Rating Pending being equivalent to a kiddie rating.

Abigsmall - "And specifically to you, socrates, how did you brilliantly figure out that a console's processor speed is directly proportional to its success? Did I say that? No.
What determines a console's success is having a wide range of elite games that are able to capture a large diversity of the types of genres of gaming.
That was the essence of the NES and SNES, but Nintendo lost that friendliness to quality 3rd party developers with the N64 - and has yet to recover. In order to be amenable to what game designers are doing, you have to have the processing capacity, and storage in order to enable porting. The fact that Nintendo has taken itself out of the game on both of those fronts - well, you're going to see the ramifications more and more as time goes on.
And it is a pretty dumb analogy to compare a tiny difference in power amongst the 6th gen console - to the HUGE difference between HD PS3/360 and the Wii. The point is not that a tiny graphical edge makes all the world, but not having the power to get ports for all of the hottest games - that does. And I didn't say that the Wii would fail financially...but that Nintendo might well be better served leveraging its strength (the software licenses it owns and handhelds).
But props on the angry and vapid arguments and all.
elmer92413 @ Oct 29th 2006 3:30AM
Just for the record...
I'm a die hard Nintendo fan boy...
The Wii will be the first next gen console I buy...
And yes I am the King of Ellipses...!!!
There is a reason I write like this too...
I'll set it aside for the below for sake of clarity...
...
ABigSmall, "technically" you could argue that the PS2 is better/equal than/to the GameCube, see RE4, FFXII, Shadow of the Colossus, ect.
Or look at the Xbox compared to the GCN, Xbox better graphics *and* sales. But PS2 compared to Xbox. It can go either way.
Aside from the above.
socrates makes a valid point. The PS2 was inferior *but* it had a head start. The Wii is inferior *and* is last out. Reversal of the PS2's situation. And you can't point to the DS and say that innovation wins, and thus so will the Wii. Because you could say that it was Nintendo's last gen dominance is what leads to it's current dominance. And thus Sony will take this gen of home consoles.
And Nintendo is on a losing streak, Sony has a winning streak, and a third player doesn't make it any easier for Nintendo.
One could go on and on comparing stuff like the above.
And each time reaching a new conclusion.
Yes, reguy, a glimmer of hope was sparked. Until I realized that the Wii was originally supposed to be an add on to the GCN. The betrayal I feel is beyond words.
And rating wise. The RP-T just goes to show that Nintendo is still unwillingly to give us M rated content.
Yes, yes
I have RE0-4,X; ED; MGS; ect. But how many of those are straight from Nintendo?
Eternal Darkness and Geist; 2 out of 43. And even then they are really 2nd party titles.
So even though Nintendo is all about games, and making "games for all ages". They've yet to address the mature audience. They still won't come out and embrace the M rating. Technically all those games are RP (actually upon further review it appears the ESRB has already rated a number of them! 27 to be exact) But Nintendo will only say that T is as high as they'll go. Kind of disheartening. And it's not even just a matter of being slapped with a M rating.
Look at why Silicon Knights left. They wanted a convergence of story telling and game play. A more "cinematic" approach to game making. Mean while all Nintendo wants to do is ship out the "pick up and play" titles. Perhaps you don't like games with substance. And only want your arcadey, quick pick up and play games. But I want more from my games.
Give me my KOTOR, Oblivion, Xenosaga, FarCry, ED!
But don't forget that Nintendo wants to broaden the video game market. They are going after the biggest demographic. Which just so happens to be women over 40, who 9 times out of 10 are playing online games. Not Wow, but Yahoo games, stuff like Bejeweled. So what kind of games is Nintendo putting out?
And the announcement that Nintendo is making a profit from day 1 on the Wii? Just adds insult to injury, salt to the wound. Thanks Nintendo for making the bottom line your #1 priority. Not as you said, "We are all about the games." Yes, yes I know companies are out to make money. So in other words they didn't make the Wii all it could be. No HD that would cost money. No DVD, that would cost money. No internal HDD, that would cost money. Only 512mb of flash, anymore would cost more money.
Do you guys not see it? Has Nintendo completely pulled the wool over our eyes? Are we like women who go back to abusive relationships when he says he'll change his ways? When will we realize that Nintendo just like AOL is no longer #1. Nor will they ever be again. And just like AOL who is trying to save their image so is Nintendo. But it's to little to late. Just like the Titanic, Nintendo will take many a fanboy down with her. Or they will become like EA. A massive tree with so much rotting flesh underneath that fresh bark.
Sorry for the rant...
But I couldn't stop the flood once I opened the gates...
And so please forgive my treasonous and blasphemous words against the Big N...
Do not strike me down O Great Miyamoto...!!!
And spare my ass Reggie...!!!

BPM? @ Oct 29th 2006 3:39AM
Socrates, Nintendo was ANYTHING but friendly to third parties in the NES days (not so sure about the Super NES days, though). Their policy with third parties back then was if you put your game on NES, you couldn't put it on another system (such as Sega Master System) for some time (I forget how long, but it was an idiotic policy).
Back then, Nintendo was pretty much all there was (just like it was pretty much only PlayStation last two gens). You either went with Nintendo, or against Nintendo. And many developers didn't want to go against Nintendo, since that was where the real money was.
Graphics are not everything, Socrates. Nintendo has proved that time and again with their handhelds. All of their handhelds were techinically inferior to the competition (from Game Boy vs. Game Gear to DS vs. PSP). What has won them the handheld market is continuously pumping out fun software.
Software is what will win the war. If Wii has the best games, overall, it will be the "winner." If PS3 has the best games, it will "win." If 360 has the best, it "wins."
And while Wii's graphic capabilities are nowhere near that of PS3 and 360, it doesn't mean they "suck." Plenty of current-gen games look GREAT. Resident Evil 4 on GameCube and SoulCalibur III on PS2 are a couple of great looking titles. Personally, if games continued to look that good (or marginally better), I'd be satisfied in the visuals department.
But if a game looks good, but is boring to play, then the game sucks, end of story.
It's more important that the game is fun than if it's nice to look at. And, no, I cannot say the Wii will be fun, nor can I say it won't be fun.
But based on the impressions from those who have played it (as well as the comments from the numerous developers who liked it), Wii will be a very fun system.
And, I don't know about you, but that's why I play games: because they're fun.

First of, where did Nintendo say T will be their highest rating? And if anyone says that that has been their policy since forever, I'll note that Conkers Bad Fur Day was made by Rare when they were a Nintendo first party developer.
Second, most "Mature" games don't use their "Mature" classification to good effect. In games, I don't care about Sex scenes, that's what proper porn is for. Excessive violence only targets the testerone-heavy crowd: female gamers might play such games, but it's more likely that they play them based on gameplay than graphics.
Thirdly, do NOT insult Nintendo for making a profit. In a relationship, do you expect yourself to provide everything for your partner? Microsoft and Sony might offer a better deal (based on pure hardware price vs quality), but that does NOT in any way make Nintendo's deal bad, it's still money for good games. Remember, initial lossmaking is a unique occurance found in very few industries. Microsoft does it because they're a newcomer, and needs marketshare badly (there's no profit if there isn't sufficient marketshare to drive them). Sony does it because they use its side effects to boost up the value of their other company products (like movies). Nintendo doesn't do it because it serves no real benifit to them (there's no point in marketshare without profit).
Next, about HD-TV: Remember that a large number of consumers do not have HD-TV, especially the target audience Nintendo is marketting to (everyone). By including HD-TV capabilities, it means that those people without HD-TV is paying extra for something they don't use. Similarly, most people have DVD players (and if you don't, the PS2 is really cheap now). So putting DVD playback is also generally an extra expense. Hard drives? Don't forget that Microsoft memory storage options is propietry, so you're paying more for them. If you already have an SD card, you already have extra storage options. In Sony's case, it's not propietry, but you've to get the $600 version to use it.
Next up, backwards compatability. For Sony, to transfer old save files, you'll have to buy an add on (this could be seen as an advantage, but Sony's already putting in additional hardware to handle backwards compatability). Microsoft messed up backwards compatability, so is the complete loser in this department. For Wii, it uses no additional hardware other than control/memory ports.
Lastly, about company lies/questionable practices: All console makers have lied or have questionable practices one time or another. Most of Nintendo's questionable practices were in the past, during the NES/SNES era. Microsoft is new so there isn't much time for them to be nasty, but their Backwards Compatability messup has already burned more than a few developers; last I heard, Psychonauts is STILL trying to work on 360. Sony however, has had most of their problems at recent times: Overstating hardware then cutting back, Overstating launch areas then cutting back, Pushing back launch dates, Negatively criticising motion capability and multiple SKU then implementing them, Launching at rediculously low numbers even though they assert they can have 4 times that number in 1 1/2 months, etc. Perhaps a lesson of humility would help Sony, just as it helped Nintendo.
Oh wait, wall of text. I guess no one important would read this them. Ah, whatever.
Infil @ Oct 29th 2006 5:33AM
Just for the record, socrates, the Wii is already looking pretty spectacular as far as graphics goes... on SDTVs. You can bet that by the time the Wii is into 3rd generation titles, they'll be pretty close to "maxing" the graphics on an SDTV. Or, at least, to the point where the law of diminishing returns really kicks in.
Wii lacks the power to compete in HDTV *only* with the next-gen consoles. This is currently a small part of the market, and will continue to be for the next several years. Wii, meanwhile, will appeal to hardcore gamers (regardless of television fidelity) and will attract new gamers to the fold (many of which do not own an HDTV, or simply don't care one way or the other).
I don't think Nintendo is worried.
As for WarioWare (coming from the original article), it's clearly been delayed because of the wealth of software available at launch. Most people don't have enough money to buy what's available NOW, and many people want WarioWare too. Nintendo is wise to wait on this, and hit us up with another good title in January/February. Meanwhile, we have Rayman and Monkey Ball (and Wii Sports in a way) to satisfy our mini-game needs. This shows Nintendo really is committed to trying its best to lower long gaming droughts.

I LOVE how people still think Nintendo is doomed and will drop out of the race.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/10/console_wars_a_.html
"Sony is in trouble. Its earnings plummeted 94 percent to $14.4 million because of costs related to its laptop battery recall. But it also reported a $369 million operating loss in its video game business because of start-up costs for the PlayStation 3."
"Sony has $4.7 billion in cash, and $3 billion in short-term debt and current long-term debt."
If anything you should be worried about Sony. If there is a massive PS3 recall or another hardware problem elsewhere they are done for.
"In Redmond, things are looking brighter for Microsoft. The company has $31.8 billion in cash."
That is the reason why Microsoft can loss millions at each half financial year on the Xbox 360. If this was any other company the Xbox brand would of single handily killed it and lost thousands of jobs. Any way you look at it the Xbox 360 is a money trap.
"Nintendo reported sales of $2.5 billion, up 69 percent from a year earlier. Net income was $458.6 million, up from a loss a year ago. Nintendo has $6.6 billion in cash."
That's right, not only is Nintendo the only one out of the three actually making money on the video game industry, they also have more fat to sit back on then even Sony.
Look at this report and honestly say to yourself these three questions:
If the PS3 fails will Sony drop out of the industry?
If the Wii fails will Nintendo drop out of the console gaming industry?
If the Xbox360 doesn't turn a profit (it has already failed in the sense that it hasn't been able to make money out of the gate to begin with) will Bill Gates finally pull the plug and just be done with this little adventure into the gaming industry?

NO NO NO
Normally this would be true if their was a SIGNIFICANT change in hardware power and specs. Is Wii a significant step up from GC... n the same vein as PS2-->PS3 and xbox-->360?
NO... if you think so then youre just delusional.
The devs have been working on GC for 6 years, and they've maxed it out. This means theres very little room for any improvement at all since Wii is maybe GC1.5 (at best)... so, top looking games will be something like RE4 x 1.5. And, this is if the devs put their time into it.
Wii is gonna suck graphically forever, this is already apparent and will become moreso in the next few years, you should just get over that fact and move on.
Besides, according to Nintendo you guys dont care about graphics. And, mini-games dont require good graphics anyways.

ummmm...
Marc...
I never implied that Sony as a "whole" was doing good...
Haha...
I think we all know otherwise. We all know that Sony is banking on the PS3 to save their collective asses.
Add that too. They will be fighting tooth and nail to stay on top. And Nintendo is, hopefully, going to be putting 110% into this console war too. Opps, I forgot. Nintendo has billions of cash reserve, in US dollars no less. And they are making money from day 1. Yep, I'm sure they are feeling the same financial pressure Sony is facing. And as it's been said time and time again. Nintendo can survive without their own console. They still have the handheld market and a great software lineup. But Sony wouldn't be no where near the same if the PS3 tanks. They have nothing left to lose. They are taking great risks with the PS3. They could have played it safe like Nintendo. Given us a marginally improved PS2, at a lower price (than the PS3's current), and give us some gimmicky controller (we all know motion control wasn't first thought of by Nintendo). If they did that, there would be no question who would win. But instead they've taken a great risk with the PS3. They've decided to put their neck on the line and really give us gamers a "next gen" console. And for that I applaud them. But as it's sometimes said in sports, Sometimes it just comes down to who really wants it. Truly Sony has much more to lose and gain then Nintendo. (But here's to hoping that Nintendo can get the fire of hell under their collective asses and make us proud once again!)
PS Thanks Marc for pointing that out... :P

What can I say? I want a Wii, real bad. The thing is while this add makes it really appealing to have one, at the same time I'm seeing what kind of games they are mainly playing (children's games really, admit it) and I have no problem with that, it's just those aren't the type of games I want to conquer. I want to conquer Red Steal, finish the game, 100%, and Metroid as well, but then I see some car game which will never come close to Gran Turismo and it's like meh... just do career mode and I'll never play again. I think boxing could be awesome and I wish for Nintendo to get the rights for at least one Mortal Kombat game. Everyone loves MK, but please don't make the weird story mode thing like in the last few games, just plain arcade.
Oh well, I guess I'm going to buy one and play it and if I don't like it, I bet someone will want to buy it, because I expect a minor shortage.

The fact that this vid provoked so much vitriol is reflective of the dire current situation in the technological sphere. Fanboyism has swollen from the natural tendancy to favour ones own product choices into a venomous crusade for dominance by one 'team', much like the attitude of wild-eyed sporting devotee's. My worry is, that as has happened because of those over-enthusiastic sports fans, the mob-like status of fanboysim may lead to actual 'hate' crimes levelled by one body against the opposing, equally closed minded zealots.
Sony vs Nintendo, Apple vs Microsoft, Ipod vs any other mp3 player: fanboyism is now found in any and every quadrent of the technological field. There is no question that our desire to fulfil or primitive urges for tribal warfare by picking our side and championing their vision, is clouding the very reason that the relevent activity is engaged with in the first place. Case in point, I am quite sure that the fanboys who post on joystiq spend far more time arguing than they do playing the games they so passionately celebrate.
Watch the video again. They're games. They are fun, and to be enjoyed. They are not the shanks and spears of your self-purpetuated conflict. I urge every fanboy reading this to vow to henceforth only use his voice to invite another to play with him, and never again to engage so woefully in this tired and ceaseless fracas.

Woohoo, I got owned on the Internet! So I guess the praise I gave you, socrates, is undeserved? OMGWTF?!? And I wasn't being angry, just highly sarcastic. Then again, you can't really tell tones of speech with text-only communication.
Either way, to be on topic, I'm going to avoid watching that promo trailer.

Okay to all of you bashing Nintendo and prasing Sony, let me give you a news flash. I plan on buying the Wii and the PS3. I will be buying 4 games with my Wii and 1 with my PS3 (Keep in mind that money is not the issue with me). The Wii is just more fun. I am buying the PS3 for Final Fantasy and I have to wait a year for that. The only games I can even think about buying at launch are Resistance and maybe Full Auto 2. (I liked the first one, please don't kill me.) The Wii launch is much different for me. I am buying Zelda, Excite Truck, Rayman, and Red Steel all on launch day. That is only one day minus all of the games I will be renting. Now, if the PS3 is next gen, why do I feel let down everytime I see a PS3 game in motion. Sure it's pretty and all, but it's got a been there done that type of feel. Nintendo is taking a risk and showing that games and the way they play are more important. Call me a crazy person, but I agree with them 100%. This is hte first console EVER that my sister, my mom and my dad are interested in. I have had to force them to take a look at games since my first NES. With the Wii, they are really excited aboutit and it is not even out yet. By the way, they think the games on the Wii are gorgeous. Anyway, what I want to get across is that don't buy into the whole graphics are what make the next gen systems. The Wii might not be in the HD era yet, but 1080p with crappy games jus isn't that interesting to me.

Lol, i like how people say one thing yet mean another (or just have no idea what they are talking about). Let's face it. Nintendo does have good games coming out for it this time and anyone that argues that is just lieing to themselves. The ps3 also has some good games at launch, but did you read the price tag and see how horrible Sony is doing financially? the 360 has a very very limited amount of "good" games on it (halo) and I don't see any reason to even bring it up. Also why do people who obviously don't want to use a motion sensing controller even watching Nintendo's preview? Then they go on to say "Nintendo isn't the first one to come up with the idea of motion sensing", as if Sony or Microsoft were the first ones to come up with the controller that looks nearly identical as the very first consoles came out. Let's not talk stupid and expect it to work.

With 1080p you can see the pimples on the boxer's face. I'm so excited.

I love how you make it sound like:
"Find a group of people of varying age, ethnic background, gender, and height." is some sort of trick in the advertising.
FYI Ross Miller, non-white people do play video games too.
