@ elmer92413
I have never looked at the rating of a game in my entire life. NEVER. I don't understand the point your trying to make. I've always thought that people play games for fun. If for you M = fun thats fine, but your missing out.

And as for my 2 cents. The video is the same stuff we have all been seeing for a good part of the year now. I just want to be able to play it. HD isn't important to me at all. I'll take my 'crappy' looking games any day as long as their fun.

@ alex

Agreed! Seems Mr. Miller missed the point by a mile and then some.

Everyone is entitled their opinion, regardless of how retarded or idiotic it may be. The game industry has a history of marketing that is either suspect or down-right pathetic. Wii's marketing campaign, while annoying at worst, is not even on the level of say...a GTA...or Bulletproof or even the overhyped, overblown sports marketing that we are subject to every damn year.

Wii is supposed to cater to the masses, from the simplistic games of Wario Ware to the die hards with Metroid and Zelda. I'm getting a Wii at launch with at least three games and some VC downloads. I'm not getting a PS3 anytime soon. Just as Blake mentioned above, I look at the PS3 library and it's a case of been there, done that with prettier graphics. It's not bringing anything new to the fold even with the SixAxis which was added AFTER Nintendo debuted the Wiimote. Phil Harrison made it clear of what Sony thought of Nintendo's development after TGS '05. Now all of a sudden Sony supports motion technology for PS3? WTF-ever.

Hey, I don't expect everyone to like the Wii anymore than I expect everyone to like the DS. But credit is due. Nintendo is going in a direction that is anything but status quo. I can't say the same for the PS3 or even the 360. People hate change in general, Trolls hate change even more-so. But just like any other advancement, if it is properly supported others will follow (I'm looking at you Sony).

Nintendo is the only developer in the world that I would trust to make something as different as Wii and provide 1st party software for it.

Some of these comments are insane. I won't address everything on here that's annoying me, but:

1) Most of the games shown in the video were children's titles? I don't think that's true. If you count WarioWare and Rayman as children's titles, that's 2. Wii Sports does NOT count as a children's title, unless for you, a lack of blood or realism is all that defines a children's title. In which case, God help you.

2) Op. Prime, when you say the Wii is a GC 1.5 at best, which specs are you using to come up with this number? It seems to me that we don't know enough about the system specs to make this assertion. Many of the games look thoroughly next-gen to me, from the most recent videos of them I've seen. I honestly think the graphic inadequacy of the Wii is being unrealistically overhyped. Those graphics do not come close to "sucking".

optimus prime is hilarious.

unrelated:

i love how people are so intent on convincing others to not get a wii or informing them of the wii's "huge downfalls".

do you trolls realise that the majority of the public does not read joystiq and does not know a whole lot about video games nor do they really care that much. they go "hey that looks pretty fun. i should get that" they don't say "hmmmm but does it do 1080p? how many processors does it run?"

i work at an electronics store and 85% of the people that come in there know nothing about electronics. i actually heard someone the other day come in and say "you know you should really get the PS2. i heard on the news that the PS3 has a bug in it and it can blow up. plus its not going to be released until next year anyway" i try educating these people but it honestly does no good.

also, if you're posting on here trying to convince someone what console they should get chances are its a lost cause. the people that post on here are generally already quite informed and have made their decision.

my advice is: if you're going to try to convert someone to a nintendo, sony or microsoft fanboy goto some random message boards that aren't video game related and get them talking about it. post all your "facts" about your favorite console there.

i originally didn't plan to make this post this long haha. if you read it, thanks.

i have my wii preordered and i'll be getting a ps3 in march when my tax return comes in.

Several people have said that the preview makes all the Wii games look kiddy and have sited the whole "RP-T" at the beginning of the video as their proof. Well, in case you don't know, RP stands for rating pending. The point is, RP could very well turn out to be a "M". Point is, don't start dissing it till it comes out and you actually know something about it.

>Once again Nintendo has set us all up for disappointment...
And shown that they really don't care about the gamer...
Only the bottom line...<
It's a company. Companies make money. What you're doing is the equivalent of complaining that water is wet.

>Yes, reguy, a glimmer of hope was sparked. Until I realized that the Wii was originally supposed to be an add on to the GCN. The betrayal I feel is beyond words.<
You "realized"? Based on...?

>So even though Nintendo is all about games, and making "games for all ages". They've yet to address the mature audience. They still won't come out and embrace the M rating.<
Because "M" games are not for all ages. Are you listening to yourself?

>Only 512mb of flash, anymore would cost more money.<
Amazon has a Gig SD card for as little as six bucks. Also, what exactly would people be putting on the system that would take up half a gig of memory?

>When will we realize that Nintendo just like AOL is no longer #1. <
Which has what to do with the price of tea in China?

>Nor will they ever be again. <
Unsupported claim.

>And just like AOL who is trying to save their image so is Nintendo. <
I didn't know Nintendo needed to save their image. Tell me, when did Nintendo get sued for providing customer service that actively tries to get more money out of the consumer?

>Normally this would be true if their was a SIGNIFICANT change in hardware power and specs. Is Wii a significant step up from GC... n the same vein as PS2-->PS3 and xbox-->360?

NO... if you think so then youre just delusional.<
So everyone who disagrees with your unsupported statement is automatically wrong. Good to know.

>The devs have been working on GC for 6 years, and they've maxed it out. This means theres very little room for any improvement at all since Wii is maybe GC1.5 (at best)... so, top looking games will be something like RE4 x 1.5. And, this is if the devs put their time into it.<
Except that Nintendo has refused to release any official specs on the system, and the only unconfirmed one I've seen-for the processor-were well over "Gamecube 1.5". You. Are. Talking. Out. Your. Rear.

John and company...
Way to miss the forest for the trees...
Did you even read my entire comments...???
Did you NOT see:
>And it's not even just a matter of being slapped with a M rating.<
Hello?! Look at list of games I want more of, first being KOTOR - rated T! I know that the rating doesn't make the game.
The thing of it is that Nintendo is making games for the lowest age group, and then saying that that game is acceptable for *all* ages. Which is true, but not true to the spirit of their mission. They need to make games for the lower ages, middle ages, and upper ages. Games is plural. I don't want 1 size fits all games. I want games aimed at the older audience. Anybody can play Candyland, but kids don't play Risk. And if it just so happens that the upper ages games is rated M then so be it. Do you not understand? I know I'm not the best with words, but bare with me. Think about it. Let it roll around in your mouth. Taste is before swallowing.
hehe...
swallow...

John, you may or not remember. But several years ago, Nintendo announced that they were coming out with a attachment that would add 5 years to the life of the GameCube. Best rumors at the time were a hdd add on. They also said multiple times that they weren't going to make the same mistake of being last to launch. Well Microsoft took everybody by surprise when they announced the 360 would be launching so soon. And well Nintendo is last again. We never saw said attachment. Add 2 and 2, I see Nintendo scrambling to get a next gen console out that is built around said GCN attachment. I'm sure the attachment was somewhat along in development for the GCN. Why else do you think the Wii so closely matches the GCN architect. Nintendo even said the GCN games could be run almost verbatim on Wii hardware! Why do you think the Wii is so cheap and so profitable so soon? Why isn't the Wii leaps and bounds above the GCN? Looking at the differences between the NES, SNES, N64, and the GCN, you can see it. And don't give me that crap about how the Wii looks great on a SDTV and *nobody* has a HDTV. The Wii better look good on a SDTV they've had 20yrs to nail down 1 resolution. How much longer do you think it's going to be until HDTV *is* standard? The Wii IS great NOW. But couple years down the road when the Wii hits its plateau graphics wise (remember developers have already had 6yrs on the very, very similar GCN hardware) the 360 and the PS3 will still be getting better. Short term Wii rocks! Long term Wii sucks. :( Once again, Why is that? Because the Wii was not meant to be! The Wii was just supposed to be an attachment to the GCN!

And on the 512mb of flash. Yes John, it truly is that cheap. Which leaves you to wonder why Nintendo is being so cheap about adding more.

And on the AOL, it's an analogy. A comparison. You know giving the Dreamcast as a reason for how the Xbox360 could too fail. I'm comparing how AOL used to be such a huge company, to Nintendo and how they used to be #1 in video games. The thing is AOL will never be as great as they used to be. Even though they are trying to become more of a portal site, like Yahoo!, and how Nintendo is going about this new controller. It's to little to late. Just like how AOL is a joke, Nintendo is slowly becoming the same. Don't pop a blood vessel thinking about it. It's rough, but it does get a bigger idea out. Don't nit pick the details of a line by line comparison of AOL and Nintendo. See the big picture! Look at the Forest not the trees! :P

And on graphics again. Why do you think Nintendo is NOT releasing specs? Why do you think pre-alpha dev kits were mod'd GCN ones? Why do you think demo units were mod'd GCNs? And by mod'd I mean an attachment ;) was added, aka the Wiimote. :P

Sure. We just didn't address all of them.

>John, you may or not remember. But several years ago, Nintendo announced that they were coming out with a attachment that would add 5 years to the life of the GameCube. Best rumors at the time were a hdd add on.<
Can you link to this alleged "announcement"?

>Well Microsoft took everybody by surprise when they announced the 360 would be launching so soon. And well Nintendo is last again. We never saw said attachment. Add 2 and 2, I see Nintendo scrambling to get a next gen console out that is built around said GCN attachment.<
You just said you didn't know what the attachment was. "Wii=Gamecube attachment" is an awfully distant conclusion to jump to.

>Why else do you think the Wii so closely matches the GCN architect. <
Because it's easier on developers? Because it reduces costs for both Nintendo themselves and said developers? Because it's not good business sense to build an entirely new architecture when you already have a perfectly good one?

>Why isn't the Wii leaps and bounds above the GCN?<
In what areas? It already has integrated wireless, USB ports, SD card slots, VC, online play, and, of course, the controller. It's also smaller and more energy efficient. It also looks cooler.

And, to answer your question: because it doesn't need to be to be a good system.

But couple years down the road when the Wii hits its plateau graphics wise (remember developers have already had 6yrs on the very, very similar GCN hardware) the 360 and the PS3 will still be getting better.<
Software arch.=!graphics capabilities, and developers almost never max out a console's pixel-pushing power early. Also, Nintendo isn't going for people who care about power. They're going for people who want to play games. Don't make me drag out the DS analogy.

>And on the AOL, it's an analogy. A comparison. <
An analogy illustrates *logic*. And you can't compare something that is to something that doesn't exist yet. Also, Nintendo has never bent consumers over the back fence. They've been championing "accessibility in games" for, what, two decades?

>And on graphics again. Why do you think Nintendo is NOT releasing specs? <
To get people to focus on the games. Those things you buy a video game console for?

>Why do you think pre-alpha dev kits were mod'd GCN ones? Why do you think demo units were mod'd GCNs? <
Because the software is built on the Cube's, and, as already pointed out, those were either just Cube *cases*, or the *early demo units* were, in fact, modified Cubes. *Not indicative of the final product*.

>Once again, Why is that? Because the Wii was not meant to be! The Wii was just supposed to be an attachment to the GCN!<
The PlayStation was "supposed" to be an SNES attachment, remember? Look how that did. See, that's an analogy.

>And on the 512mb of flash. Yes John, it truly is that cheap. Which leaves you to wonder why Nintendo is being so cheap about adding more.<
I said "SD Card". Flash is more expensive than SD. And, again, keeping costs down.

>If you are still reading, here's a cookie!<
No thanks. I don't like reindeer chocolate.

Just a little science

>59. does anybody else notice that the top of the wii-mote changes color when they press a button

This is most likely just the IR light coming from the wii mote. Even cheap webcams will pick display changes unseen parts of the spectrum. You can try it with your camcorder and a TV remote, notice the front of the remote light up on playback, but you don't see it happen normally.

>61. Look at the Forest not the trees! :P
The health of a forest can be determined by looking at the trees. Those who are educated don't glance over facts.

An observation: Why does Sony feel the need to have specs for 120 frames per second?
The human brain perceives 25fps as a continuous uninterrupted movement. 60fps is the extreme of what can be perceived consciously. Imagine a spinning top with dashes of equal lengths drawn on the visible surface. At speeds exceeding 25 cycles per second, a solid line is seen with brief fluctuations. At speeds exceeding 60 cycles per second, no observable difference can be detected. It seems to me that this over engineering simply goes hand in hand with the law of diminishing returns.

Elmer, your indignation over the whole thing is amusing, but pointless.

Yes, the Wii architecture is similar to GC. The Wii is more powerful by a fair chunk. That it's not as big as the jump between the SNES and 64 is really irrelevant - Developers are not hurting for graphical power, the graphics are no longer a hindrance to art direction, and further development will have very quickly diminishing returns. Nintendo's refusal to release specs on it doesn't really say much, they have nothing to gain by giving fuel to idiots who lack imagination to do anything more than compare numbers.

But it's funny how much of a big deal you're making about the wiimote, like it's a personal affront to you and has injured you deeply. Pffft. How about this - the way the previous management at Nintendo pushed the GameCube, it had expended its ability to grow in the marketplace, and adding the Wiimote to it would not have sold more consoles and very few games would have implemented it. The limitations like disk size were encroaching more and more over time. It would have been an utter waste. Just like the powerglove, in fact. But no, they should have just released it to make you happy.

The Wii is fair competition for this generation. Releasing this new console with a bump in power, space, built in connectivity, and the wiimote will encourage production of games that can take advantage of all of them without worrying if everyone bought all the parts. The Wii isn't “supposed” to be anything other than what it is. It'll optimize the chance for the controller tech to make a real difference.

And, for the record, I wouldn't have minded if Nintendo put more than 512 for storage, but the truth is that no amount they could ever add would be enough, so instead you can buy SD cards that will get progressively larger and cheaper. They only needed to put in the minimum to accommodate some VC games. Non-issue, but I do hope they support USB drives.

I will agree with your points about the quality of certain T/E games, but my experience is that Nintendo's T/E games are still entertaining to adults while being accessible to children. The problem I believe, lies in 3rd party developers that are not competent at making games that are both playable by the young and interesting or any challenge to the old. They make kiddie crap, and the best market to dump it on is the Nintendo system. It's a problem, but there's not really much Nintendo can do about it without aggressively shrinking their market base, which would be stupid. It does look like a fair amount of effort is being put into making games that appeal to different ranges of age groups. Another consequence of a well-made Wii game should (I hope) be that the player’s true skill sets the pace of the game. If you suck, being slow and careful will get you there eventually. If you rock, you can charge ahead into the fray. I hope people learn a lesson from fl0w. The last problem I see is that skill is just one dimension – completionists, for example, will find a game to easy because they grabbed every powerup along the way.

Carl: I just went back and watched the video, it really looks like the player just changes the angle of the wiimote when he presses the button, and the reflection visible to the camera changes, that's all. We obviously don't know for sure, but I'd put good money that the Wiimote does not emit any IR at all (and I'm guilty of stating this as fact, even though I can't cite references). I'm pretty sure it's just a camera, and the sensor bar is actually just a couple IR LEDs. IR shows up dim red on cheap cameras, or pinkish on cameras with the IR filter removed. Some (crappy) pictures from E3 showed glowing spots on the sensor bars. In the video, the front of the Wiimote flashes blue for a moment, which is most likely reflections from the TV.

On to framerate, a flash of light 25 times a second looks constantly on if it's standing still, but if it's moving, it's obvious that it's flashing. TV and movies are recorded so that most of the light during the 1/25th sec interval is captured, so a moving object appears as a blur, and our brain puts the frames together as a line of motion. Video games render one exact instant at a time, and generally, artifically rendering that blur of motion to make it look smooth takes much more processing power than just putting up many images for the eye and brain to average on its own. More FPS always means smother motion, even though the eye can't distinguish between frames.

BTW, 60Hz monitors hurt my eyes. The upper limit varies from person to person. TV phosphors stay on longer I think, so have less headache inducing problems. LCDs are constantly lit, but I dislike some of their characteristics, but those problems are almost entirely gone in the newest ones.

GameSpot's equivalent article is linked below

Took me awhile to find the articles...
10 to 1 the Wiimote was in line for a release like the Mic, Kongo Drums, Keyboard, SD MemoryCard adaptor, and IBM's hdd add on. (and yes the last 3 are there just to show my astute knowledge of GCN "Peripherals" that never made it or at least over here in the US, in the keyboards case, I personally was much looking forward to the SD adaptor and Keyboard, PSO needs all the love it can get! That and that massive keyboard controller would have made one heck of a close quarters weapon! I'd link a pic of it but I've hit my 3 link limit already in the main discussion. But a quick Google search will give it to you.)
But I'm glad Nintendo decided to focus their next console on it instead.
