We wait for Wii/PS3 at Toys R Us (Boston Edition: Part 2)
Last night we left our band of intrepid PS3 and Wii pre-order hopefuls to survive the brutal New England evening. They survived the night -- but not without incident. The police were called by disgruntled pre-order hopefuls, who said a fight had broken out in front of the store. The police were ready to send everyone home but, upon seeing the people wrapped up like burritos trying to stay warm, the Dedham police had the common sense to realize there was no fight and let them stay outside. At 5 AM Toys R Us employees allowed the people to come into the vestibule and at 6 AM began handing out sheets of paper. They were not allowed to pre-order both units as originally stated and had to pick their poison: PS3 or Wii.
Today wasn't just the PS3/Wii event at Toys R Us. They also started selling the Elmo TMX today -- they were the only folks walking out with an item in hand. A group of parents and grandparents were set up behind the Wii/PS3 people. Tammy (pictured right) found a comfortable spot on top of some carriages. Bill was the first of the Elmo group, and was only one behind the last Wii pre-order person. Bill said, "I have a PC and when I play it's on a PC. When my child comes of age then I'll wait in line for a Wii too ... but now I wait for Elmo."

Around 9 AM the cops and security showed up for a second time. Once again, somebody reported a fight -- jealous, jealous people. The officer walked in and asked what was going on. The assembled crowd said there was no fighting. One of the parents mentioned they were there for Elmo so the officer said, "No fighting. Elmo is on his way." Later on one of security guards turned around at the door and said, "No fighting, no clawing, no hair pulling." One gamer retorted, "That's the Elmo people you have to worry about!"
Irina, our capitalist from the night before was struggling in the morning, asked if it was still worth waiting the night, "Don't know." If she gets her $2000 on eBay, we're sure she'll be fine.
The rest of the people who camped out the night were in high spirits -- and became more excited as the morning progressed. Asked what they did between 2-5 AM they said they pulled their cars up to the sidewalk in front of the Toys R Us and got some sleep and warmth in their cars. They were appreciative of Taylor Aubut, who had set up the entertainment system in the back of his car the night before.
At 9:30 AM they began packing up their chairs in preparation for the doors opening. "Rude Ken," the store director, came to the door to let people know how the pre-order would play out. They'd be opening the doors at 10 AM and people would line up outside the media section and allowed to enter in groups of 4 to purchase their units. Those wild and crazy Elmo folks could pick up their stuff at the register.
10 AM everybody proceeded very orderly and got their pre-orders. Alfonzo, who was #1 in line, said good-bye to Emilio (pictured at right) and went off into the sunshine, the proud owner of a pre-ordered PS3.Taylor who was #9 (pictured below with his Wii pre-order), who didn't get a PS3 pre-order thinks he still has a chance of getting a unit at launch. He'll be camping out again to see if he can get a PS3 at a local big-box store that he believes will have extra PS3s. Of course, at that point it'll be late November - we hope we don't have to report on dedicated gamers being sent to the hospital for exposure, because it's going to be freezing!

(Side note: The Toys R Us management, especially "Rude Ken" the store director, should learn to be a little nicer. Maybe if y'all were a little more respectful your corporation wouldn't be hemorrhaging money. If reporters show up to do a nice fluff piece about people waiting in line all night -- let them take photos.)

i camped. i got my wii. one of thr groups i was hanging out with actually had a barrel fire and was using that for warmth. one disgruntled parent attacked the manager after learning that there were no wii's left (she got there at 10:30 am, so she was late)...anyway, my experience wasn't as cool as joystiq's but i am tired as all hell and i can't wait to sleep :)

Or you can play 360, PS2 and Gamecube for a couple months in the warmth of your home...

200 people showed up to my TRU. They raffled the systems off, they let us join in both the PS3 and Wii raffles. I was a few ticket numbers off from winning a PS3 and/or a Wii. I'm not worried about Wii, it'll be in surplus and I work at EB now so getting one will be no problem. PS3? Eh...
So my TRU had a measley 10 Wii, that's just ridiculous but not as bad as PS3. 1 Tard Pack and 3 Premium. Complete bullshit and I feel sorry for the guy that one the core bundle, I would have traded it for a Wii preorder.

So... the elmo preorders were on the same day? (they have elmo preorders?) Were they intentionally trying to make a queue?
Anyway, what was the ratio of PS3, Wii and Elmo waiters in the line?
christian @ Oct 29th 2006 1:21PM
i worked at toys r us during the whole x360 fiasco and that company has no idea what it's doing when it comes to video games.. . for anyone that gets a console through them just be careful, they'll try to add-on so much extra crap that i think it's worse than any gamestop or EB .. .
Taylor Aubut @ Oct 29th 2006 1:25PM
#7 I was at the toys r us reviewed in this post, the ratio was 8 ps3s (7 premium 1 core) 20 wii and a butt load of elmo enough for 2 per person sitting in line so probably around 100-150 elmo

Trismegistos @ Oct 29th 2006 1:56PM
Wii is supposed to have enough units to cover the launch right?
I can't see the point to lining up for a Wii console when there should be enough.
The PS3 looks like it will be a good console but the launch lineup is not worth getting the console at launch. There are around 4 games that aren't multi-platform. But then again if there is not a lot of production you would want to get one ASAP for when the really good games drop.
It is going to be interesting watching the Xbox360 and Wii go head to head this Christmas. I'm in Australia so no PS3 until April 2007.
Christmas 2008 should be even better. That is when we can start expecting the truly top shelf titles that are meant to sell the consoles.

I laugh at you all. I walked into my local game crazy a few days ago and preordered the 2nd to last Wii, my friend who happend to be in the store preordered the last one just to say he had one. No lines, no camping, no worries. Oh, and the best part is, they've been taking preorders for months!!!
Brody Brooks @ Oct 29th 2006 2:51PM
I camped outside the Toys R Us in Sunnyvale, California and it wasn't quite as hectic, but still interesting. The store was taking 8 pre-orders for PS3, and 20 pre-orders for the Wii. Here's what the line lengths were:
PS3: 8
Wii: 31 (est.)
I asked around the lines (there was one for the Wii and one for PS3) and all but one of the people in line for PS3 were planning on putting their catches on eBay. Nobody in line for the Wii claimed to want to sell theirs, in fact they were keeping theirs.
There's something to think about.
JET @ Oct 29th 2006 3:08PM
I was in Clarksville Indiana.
PS3 - 4 (3 60GB/1 20GB)
Wii - 10
Elmo- 40 (2 per customer)
Arrived at 4:45PM and was 3rd in line. Management allowed us to wait in the entryway until the store closed, then it was outside into the soul-sucking cold. PS3 sold out at 7:00PM, Wii at 1:30AM (pre-time change).
Most of the systems were being purchased for resale. Even the folks who only got Wii & Elmo felt the wait was worth their time and that Wii will be impossible to find come launch day. They'd heard the 1 million number being thrown around by Nintendo, but after EB's severe allocation cut followed by Toys R Us's cut, they believe the number is significantly inflated. "You might happen upon one," one person told me, "but you won't be able to just go out and buy one."
Man, if pre-sale was this crazy, I shudder to think about what launch will look like.
JET
PS: The store's Big Book didn't have the $10 gift card with $75 purchase, so after getting our slips a few of us ran out to buy Sunday papers that had the coupon.
The pre-order slips are nice. I'm glad they let us keep them. It'll make a decent trophy for a night of pain and suffering.

I arrived about an hour early, near Minneapolis, MN. About 22 people were already lined up. I thought it was just a joke when someone started saying everyone after the first 10 or 15 people were just getting Elmo's, referring to the Elmo craze almost a decade ago. After all, why would people line up for an elmo?
I didn't get to pre-order a Wii, but the manager offered me an Elmo. What a cruel joke.
Andy @ Oct 29th 2006 3:50PM
I remember calling one night to Zellers(I live in Ontario) and I asked about Wii preorders. They said they were taking them the next morning, such a coincidence, and that there would be 10. Me and my friend went, well actually, I forced my mom to go, I was away that weekend. lol. Anywho we were there 30 minutes before the store opened. There was my mom, my friend with his mom and 2 other people waiting there for preorders. I got number 4. They were bundles, had to pay all 455(after tax) for Wii, Excite Truck, and Rayman Raving Rabbids. I may sell back Excite Truck to somewhere, but I'm definitely keeping Rayman, cause it looks funny as hell. I feel empathetic for all those who stayed out all night in the cold. I'm surprised these crazed game fanatics don't burst into fight to reorder the line and get in first place. So people fight on the internet, yet these so called "fanboys" are civil in reality? lol interesting. Anyways, I'm glad I have my Wii preorder. I love my pre bundle, but if I couldn't pre bundle, I'd much rather put 50 dollars down, and that go towards the system rather than taking a chance at trying to get one on launch without a preorder.

I'm waiting a few months for Nintendo to get any potential janks out of the Wii. 360 launch, anyone?
Jake @ Oct 29th 2006 5:17PM
Well Alex I couldn't disagree with you more. Nintendo is notorious for shipping consoles in perfect working condition and they've never had as many heating/freezing issues as either Microsoft or Sony. Hell I'm sure with all their systems combined over the last 20 years they've never had as many as the 360 launch.
Plus, Nintendo isn't really running risky new hardware here. Meanwhile during TGS PS3's were overheating out the ass and they're not even released yet.
cas @ Oct 29th 2006 5:32PM
I pre-ordered at EB the day they started. No camping, freezing or fighting. I just walked in at 10:30. I guess I got super lucky.

"people actually wait in line for days for a videogame system receipt?"
See! Someone is paying attention. I mentioned this in the last article.
Pre-Orders: 10-20 hours
Console @ Launch: 5-8 hours
It doesn't add up. Most of these people could've camped outside a Best Buy (which will have far more consoles than Toys R Us) and received an actual console in less time.
Just for being so ignorant, I hope people lose their receipts.
Daniel @ Oct 29th 2006 5:38PM
I arrived 3 hours early at the Nashville, TN TRU (Madison area). I was about 20th in line. The store had 3 PS3's and 15 Wii's. I was 8th on the list for preordering the Wii. By the time doors opened there were around 70 or so people in line. They sold out of the 15 Wii's before making it through the whole line, leaving about 10 people Wii-less, (hehe I said Wii-less).
dsub @ Oct 29th 2006 6:01PM
next-gen gamer-how do you figure that the wait time is less? Where do you get 10-20 hours for?
When I got my PS3 pre-order I showed up at 3am, was 5th in line, and waited for 6 hours until 9am to place my pre-order.
First of all, I guarantee you that there will be people who will start lining up at least as early as noon on the 16th or 17th respectively...if not earlier. In fact, if one really wants to get a PS3/Wii, isn't that the smartest thing to do anyways in order to ensure a good spot in line? Afterall, most stores will likely only be getting 20 or so PS3's at MOST. So my suggestion? The wait time will be much longer @ launch. Perhaps if you are getting your console from a store like EB that'll be open at midnight, or a 24-hour joint like a Wal-Mart...but most other places, like Best Buy/Circuit City/Target, etc. are not open 24 hours, and will not be open at midnight. Surely not to sell off 10 PS3 units. They know people will wait until they open at 9 or 10...so why go through the trouble of scheduling people to stay? None of these stores opened at midnight for 360, or PS2, or XBOX, or Gamecube...so why would they open at midnight now? Like I said, the only way your getting a PS3/Wii at midnight is if you've got one pre-ordered at a place like EB/Gamestop or your going to a 24-hour business.
All I can say is, with that attitude, you don't sound very dedicated to getting a console at launch. Let's say your theory is right (this mostly applies to people in the northern half of the country)...in that case...which would you prefer?
Wait outside for a pre-order overnight for 10 hours in 40-60 degree weather to gain the ability to just stroll up at 11:50pm on the 17th, walk into a nice warm EB/gamestop and pickup your system, or...
Wait outside for 10+ hours in 20 degree weather with possible snow/freezing rain so that you can get a console at 9/10am and afterwards be so exhausted and freezing that you can barely stay awake to say said console...meanwhile, all those who waited for a pre-order have been at home playing in their nice warm homes for the past 9-10 hours while you froze your ass off.

Apparently you needed some star power to score one here: is that Vince Chase from Entourage in the first pic?
Tacoman @ Oct 29th 2006 9:01PM
The TRU launches sound pretty brutal. I'm glad I got in my Wii preorder on the first wave at EB, the weather was nice and the store was in a mall.
The guarantee I'll have one on launch day by waiting a few hours for one 6 weeks in advance is a bit of satisfaction, 3 hours then to be able to waltz in at my leisure on November 19. plus it seems to be becoming part of gaming culture, whether or not it's reasonable. I wholly expect Wii to be in stock for whomever wants one at launch, those who want PS3 aren't so lucky. At least it's not Japan, where they're not even taking preorders for the 100K units (big launch-day line generates exposure for the stores, looking at you Bic Camera); I fully expect things to get a little wooly here, not to mention there.
The games are shipping early, too. We can pore over Twilight Princess' manual for 5 days before the console launch, yay!
Judd @ Oct 29th 2006 9:06PM
"Just for being so ignorant, I hope people lose their receipts." Next-Gen-Gamer
I'm not sure about Toy's R Us, but I'm pretty sure at Gamestop even though they ask you to save the reciept you don't need it. You definitely don't need the reciept for games, they have your information in the computer.
I am fine with people selling systems on Ebay. It's a free market and just like import sites like Lik-Sang, I feel like once you buy a system you should be able to do whatever you want with it. I just hope people realize that it's a gamble. Yes, tons of people bought 360's on Ebay, and charged over a $1000 for them. And yes tons of kids come Christmas time will demand a PS3 from their parents, and they will do whatever it takes to get one. But they said in part 1 "One of the few people in line not selling his PS3 on eBay..." If more people want to sell it than buy it, they might not turn out that lucky. Remember the concept of supply and demand is you need more demand than supply. I'm not saying those who sell their system on Ebay definitely won't make a profit, I just hope those people realize that it is a risk.
P.S. Does anybody else think that guy in the first pic looks EXACTLY like Adrian Grenier, who plays Vincent Chase on Entourage? http://imdb.com/name/nm0004978/
That guy is way too much of a pretty boy to be a gamer.
Bats @ Oct 29th 2006 9:12PM
Got my Wii and some elmos to pay for it in Pinole, CA. I'm actually really unhappy with the way this preorder went, and the Gamestop/EB as well (I stood in line for two hours and walked away with nothing). More than a dozen people behind me walked away without the Wii they came for today, including some who waited from 6 am! The store would not confirm how many Wiis they were getting, or whether or not they would let those getting PS3s get a Wii as well. Fortunately they did not, or I wouldn't have gotten a Wii.
All stores should have posted the rules the night before to prevent this from happening. I'm surprised there haven't been reports of violence/vandalism due to frustrated, exhausted people being denied. At the least, there are a lot of people who will not be shopping at Toys R Us again. Is customer service dead? These guys dropped the ball here.
Cassius @ Oct 30th 2006 12:51AM
The day after the EB Games pre-orders came I went to Gamebuzz a store here in Montreal. They offered me a 2 way deal with my Wii pre-order; either I pay an extra 50$ on the Wii and I get off clean or I buy 4 games and 2 accessories with it. At first I thought this stupid and wanted to pay an extra 50$ but then I thought; Hell, I wanna buy those 4 games anyways. So in the end, I'll walk in for a wii and 4 games and 2 accessories on the 19th.
also, even though they say there should be enough Wii's on the 19th, you never really know what might happen hence why I'd rather get a pre-order just to secure my console. On the other hand, I'm not hardcore enough to go wait a few hours. The solution came up easy: buy 4 games and 2 accessories. Nobody waited in line to get those preorders because your Wii ends up costing like 600$cdn so I walked in during the day and on the 19th, I'll walk in during the day. No wait time at all. Just the way I want it.
GeekFather @ Oct 30th 2006 12:56AM
I waited outside at a local toys r' us starting at about 1:40-2:00 am, Had the cops come by several times because of some drunken idiot who was playing his music real loud. Finally after 7 hours a few more of the people inline called him in and got him to go away. He free up a spot so my friends little brother ended up being 20th on the wii's and that was it.
Ended up getting an elmo too and selling it for 50 bucks to some guy who needed 5 for his kids. Good day.

I remember I forgot to preorder a 360 and then I decided not to camp out to get one either. Then the following week after launch I walked into Sam's Club and picked up one of the 100 or so 360s they got in. Something tells me I will have no problem doing the same for the Wii (I have no desire to get a PS3 right now because of the cost. Perhaps one day).
boardgameaddict @ Oct 30th 2006 11:07AM
I got my Wii pre-order in on September 17th at the Nintendo world store @ Rockefeller center. They said they'd have enough for walk-ins for at least a week after launch but I predict they'll never run out. Nintendo will keep it's flagship store stocked. They'll also release the console at Midnight on the 17th with some cool prizes and giveaways. At least they did that for the DS Lite launch. Since midnight hits the east coast first, I'll be one of the first consumers in the country to be playing my Wii!!
As for the PS3, Sony will patch it 5 times before I even think of buying it. The first run of hardware will be as buggy as the software it ships with. All the receipts on eBay are going for $1400 or more with one guy predicting that future units will auction for $7000. No thanks. I wait until the hardware, software and frenzy all settle down and then I'll buy one. If it's anything like the 360, that'll be March.

Maybe I did not get the picture correctly. However, North America has a total population around 331 M. I really don’t see how 1 M unit can be sold out on launch day. Can you imagine every one out of 300 ppl (regardless their age) going out the same morning to buy a ~$300 dollars gaming machine? I really doubt about this.
