Why hasn't there been a film about the games real main character, Ryu?

I mean, Van Damme as Guile, the american GI makes sense for the era when a japanese hero would not have been so readily accepted. Now is a different story.

So do they think the only way they can get people to see this film is if its about a young hot chinese girl?

Why don't they just spend the extra money and make a CG film instead.
Some things just don't translate well into live action, just watch the DOA movie trailer for further proof. Okay, so it probably won't be that bad, but that doesn't mean it'll be any good.

#1, because he has no storyline worth filming.

Call him the main character all you want, but the story of Shadaloo and all the characters it involves is much larger and carries a bit more depth than Ryu's endless plight to find himself and more warriors. That's more suitable for a series.

Chun-Li actually has some meat to her story, considering she lost her father, was a cop, etc. Technically this could be really great. Technically.

As long as they don't play into fanboy-isms (flirting with the idea of romantic relationships with ANY character) and handle the cameos correctly, they could do well.

Please, no Van Damme or Kylie Minogue.

Seabiscuit KNOCKOFF?

Seabiscuit was an obvious Oscar-grab. Dreamer was a way better movie. Kurt Russel > Jeff Bridges, Dakota Fanning > Toby McGuire.

I love the way you people are arguing about SF stories when there pretty much are none. Theres stupid little bits about every character, none of which would amount to even a paragraph.

What was Chun Li's ending? She becomes a young single girl.. WOW, i can't wait for this to suck.

I would make a movie with Dan Hibiki. Maybe, when I have film-making noteriety I will be able to beg Capcom to let me make it.

DAN FRIGGIN' HIBIKI.

He needs his credit, for it is due.

I don't think they'd be able to find an actor with those legs, so it must be done in CGI. I just can't accept anyone as Chun-Li that isn't absurdly gorgeous and have massive face crushing thighs. Mmmm... gymnasts...

I for one am kind of pissed about it being centered around Chun-Li. I'm really getting sick of the Woman action movies: Tomb Raider, Underworld, Ultraviolet, Resident Evil, etc. Put Ryu as the main character and make it badass. The worst part about Van Dame's version was that Ryu was a nobody in it. Why cant they just make the movie loosly based off the Udon Comic series? The storyline for it is great and it includes almost everyone.

lol. ryu does have storyline tied to him. he and ken were gouken's students. and gouken incidently is Akuma's brother. where akuma continues his master's teaching, gouken abandon the most powerful move of the teaching. later, akuma killed gouken and ryu went looking for his master's killer. since akuma is the most bad-ass character in SF series, ryu lost the battle but akuma doesnt kill him because he feels Ryu can be much better by adopting a soulless technique that can leads to Akuma's super finishing move. of course, he wants ryu to be better so he has satisfaction in killing him.

ok, no need for me to explain furthermore. but RYU HAS A STORYLINE.

SF does have a great story. Get the comics and youll see they all have storylines connecting to one another. If anything SF has the best story out of any fighter.

Have to agree. Ryu does have a storyline. So does Chun Li no arguement there. No CGI please. I love CGI as much as the next but uh no. I think it should center around Ryu for one reason. Hes the keyhole to all the other characters. Ken, Chun Li etc. Have the main focus on him. Chun as a sub plot. The story does not have to follow word for word the games (since the game is not tooo in depth on story it shouldnt be a problem) Have Ryu looking to avenge his masters death (who doesnt love a cliche hook like that) Ken helps. Meets up with Li who is looking for her fathers murderer. Infiltrate MA competition, SL runs it as this underground cartel. Throw in some fighters for taste. Mix it up with in-arena fights and assaulting the cartel. Woo-ping choreographs lol. Great martial arts/action film. Cut print :)

Oh American audiences arent ready for a Japanese hero but they are for a Chinese?? I know what you mean but if they are willing to do Chun Li they should be ok with Ryu as well.

Send any royalty checks for uber plot to me :)

Let me know when you get that movie done, Metahuman, and I'll buy a ticket.

If they're going to do this, they should actually have it rip off of SF3, not SF2. You'd have a religious/mystical cult trying to take over the world, constant intrigue amongst the bad guys, random old guys kicking ass, a ninja, a girl constantly falling out of her gi, and Elena bouncing around with but a few scraps of cloth.

That, and it would remind fewer people of the previous SF movie, which is always a smart move.

Regarding Ryu:

I've been playing Street Fighter since the first one. One of my earliest gaming memories is getting yelled at for hitting the buttons too hard at the local Little Caesar's arcade. So I feel qualified to say that Ryu is an awful, uninteresting character that only total n00bs play.

But that's besides the point. His story, while great fodder for a video game and done surprisingly well in the original SF2 animated movie, is not exactly compelling material for anything approaching a good movie. In fact, Street Fighter in general is not great source material unless you really delve into what's going on behind the scenes, which they *tried* and *failed* to do in the last live-action movie.

Ryu's story can be the main one, but it can't be the only story the movie's based on, or it would get really dumb, really fast as he just travels around fighting different people to avenge the death of his master by fighting another guy. Chun-Li, at least, has the character dimensions of having to live up to her murdered father's name, being a woman in the culture of Interpol and China, etc. Her story admittedly isn't much different but it's at least got some depth beyond "I want to be the strongest warrior in the world".

The point is, it's still going to be awful and proof that Street Fighter should not exist outside the animated realm either way.

heck, they got chinese girls to play japanese girls in 'memoirs of a geisha.' why not get a chinese guy with some actual kung fu skill (how about donny yen?) to play a japanese guy, Ryu? yeah and i agree with everyone. ryu is the main character. he should be focused on, more so than guile, ken or chun li. and the movie's main bad guy should be sagat, not bison. there's plenty of great ideas to make a movie about ryu and sagat.

The only reason why Chun Li's going to be the main character is because they wanna make lots of cash from pervy geeks (worked for Tomb Raider, right?). It's probably the main reason why it's live action and not CG (which takes a butt load of money if done correctly by the way!).

Find me a hot chick who can act to play that role, and a good storyline (unlike Catwoman's) and you've got yourself a blockbuster.

I always remember the intro sequence to Bloodsport, wich had all the warriors from around the globe training in diferent ways. It was cool because you got to see an african treeclimber fighting a sumo. They should take the whole "Bloodsport" angle on it: Invitation of a mixed skill tournament where you follow the main man Ryu, his rival/friend Ken(played by Ashton Kutcher LOL), and assorted others with varrying reasons. In the end it comes down to those who are good joining up against the bad guys in the tourney(I'd make Bison as chun-Li's nemesis, and Akuma as Ryu's). But Chun Li is a good choice too. Lucy Liu is my candidate.

Daydreams aside, I figure it won't be as abysmally bad as the last one, and that one had some good quotes. Deejay: I'm not paid for this(potentielly deadly situation)
Zangief: What? You'r getting paid?
