The fact that Nintendo announced that they will be making movies in-house has seemed to be forgotten. There are more than one that they are working on if I remember correctly. That is all that was really said. Anyways, I believe that there is something up their sleeve as far as DVD playback is concerned when it comes to this. To me this a no-brainer. I just wish that Nintendo will quit driving me crazy with their U.S. government-like policy on secrets. Still at the same time surprises are fun and all

who cares? who wants their console to play dvds poorly when a dvd player that produces a better picture, is less than 50 bucks and doesnt cause an expensive console to burn out early.

i'd rather have a dvd player

@41 - Those $40 DVD players are manufactured by dodgy chinese companies that don't pay their licence fees to the MPEG group. Every DVD enabled device is required to pay patent licencing fees to the MPEG group, something along the lines of $20 per device.

the difference between $250 and $270 is significant in the eyees of the consumer (but let's not get onto the whole thing about nintendo making a profit at launch). It's not inconceivable that DVD playback could be included as a WiiShopping Channel purchase, for those who actually want it. $25 worth of Wii points would satisfy the MPEG group and cover nintendo's costs, and only those who really want it would have to pay for it.

Just theorising.

Would be nice, but honestly they'd need something more than just DVD playback (personally, I won't be able to get a wii at launch so if it were true, it'd be a win-win situation for me).

Give us the darned rechargeable controllers! *fanboy side awakens and demands an MMORPG on Wii without monthly subscription*

At first, I was mad about the AA batteries in the controllers, but after having thought about it, its actually a better idea.

First, its supposed to look like a remote. How many TV/DVD/Receiver remotes do you know of with rechargeable batteries built in?

Second, I've been needing to get AA rechargeable batteries for a long time now anyway (Wireless RF keyboard eats batteries), so now is a great time to use them in Wiimote as well.

I really wonder what this last secret is. Prepare to be disapointed. I am not getting my hopes up to high.

What does it matter if it plays DVD's? DVD players are $30 or less now. There is no point in adding the functionality, and besides if you don't already have at least one DVD player of some kind in your house then you shouldn't be getting a Wii.

I hate it when they come up with "better" versions of what they originally released. I don't care much for this upgrade. Who needs so many dvd players at home? Besides, although some might consider this as a perk, I would rather have my stuff separate from one another. I want my PS3 to for games, my dvd players for movies, my cd player/component for music, anyway you get my point.

i believe if they were to add functions like the dvd player, it should be free. This is like the fuctions they add like their internet browsers.
