Silver PS2 announced for $129

Sony announced today via press release that a "limited edition" silver PS2 will now be offered to North American gamers for $129.99 as it already has been to both the European and Japanese public. The shiny goodness includes a silver controller and integrated Ethernet port just like the black slimline edition. While the release makes no mention of an available date, expect the new color to hit stores before the Thanksgiving holidays. From the release: "To date, more than 111 million PlayStation 2 units and more than 1.12 billion pieces of software for the PlayStation 2 have shipped worldwide, making it the fastest-selling gaming platform on the market."
Should be interesting to see how well this little fellow sells next to all three next-gen consoles this holiday season. According to NPD, the PS2 has outsold the Xbox 360 every month (excluding April) since the latter's US launch. Live in our world, play in Sony's (for now).

Woohoo for the long tail of business.
Raynre @ Oct 30th 2006 7:00PM
Seriously, who -doesnt- have a PS2 by now?
You know, besides me.
Zaius @ Oct 30th 2006 7:01PM
I bought one last week, my ps2 died and I'm waiting to get ps3 when I move to japan.
I love the little guy.
Triz @ Oct 30th 2006 7:03PM
Best Buy advertised them on Sunday as available now.
ty @ Oct 30th 2006 7:03PM
they have them already for sale for 129$ here at bestbuy in manchester CT. Almost picked one up this past weekend.

Kellydude025 @ Oct 30th 2006 7:04PM
WOW...if sony came out with this 3 years ago, i'd be interested.
Evan @ Oct 30th 2006 7:05PM
Uh, BestBuy (Canada) has had these out on the shelf for at least a week, and their website says "October 20th".
Donny Boy @ Oct 30th 2006 7:06PM
According to the NPD... doesn't the old ass GBA still outsell the PSP?
All that proves is that older cheaper hardware outsells newer more expensive hardware.
Maxmidget @ Oct 30th 2006 7:08PM
Saw this in a Houston Fry's last night. There was a whole display. Didn't realise they hadn't been announced.
DarkMavis @ Oct 30th 2006 7:09PM
They had them at Target in Cottage Grove, MN earlier this week as well. They were on a rear end-cap almost like they were on clearance or on sale. Anyway, not for me. I'm going with the 360 just before Thanksgiving. I'm hoping for a 360 bundle of some sort....

GBA outsells the DS
Optimus Prime @ Oct 30th 2006 7:10PM
"All that proves is that older cheaper hardware outsells newer more expensive hardware."
GC sales would have been outselling 360 as well then; thats not how it happened... 360 just aint that compelling.
POOLSCLOSED @ Oct 30th 2006 7:10PM
Ugh, will Sony sell any individual silver controllers for this?
nick @ Oct 30th 2006 7:12PM
I'm done with the PS2. Bought one on launch day, which lasted a few years before having some hardware issue, then bought a replacement, which I've since given away earlier this year because I wasn't playing it as much. It was fun for a long time, but I don't see myself buying another one.
Onto next generation...
snoopaloop @ Oct 30th 2006 7:14PM
hey, just a quick question to anyone who knows the answer. I'm considering picking one of these up but I'm concerned the controller that the system comes with has had the rumble feature removed. Is sony still selling this system with the dual shock?
on a side note to Raynre, many people do not have a ps2. 111 million systems sold hardly puts a dent into the 6.5 billion potential customers available.
Chuggernaut @ Oct 30th 2006 7:15PM
OMG Supply and Demand. The less something costs, the more people will buy it, thus the PS2 sells strong. Oh, and there's no halo 3. The 360 being outsold by the ps2 is not new.
Bonanza Bill @ Oct 30th 2006 7:16PM
These have been out in the UK for what...over a year now?
Ben @ Oct 30th 2006 7:17PM
This unit is available now, I just received them at my work on Saturday.
Sub @ Oct 30th 2006 7:18PM
My PS2 broke a while back. I might buy this one, Silver looks a hell of a lot better than black.
As for the PS2 outselling the 360, of course it does. It'll outsell the PS3, too. It has nothing to do with the 360 being a bad machine, it has to do with the fact that the PS2 has a boatload of games available at this point and, relatively speaking, it's dirt cheap.
Donny Boy @ Oct 30th 2006 7:19PM
So Optimus Prime, by your logic... the PSP and DS aren't "compelling" since the GBA outsells them both month after month.
BklynKid @ Oct 30th 2006 7:23PM
I still don't own a PS2 and I probably never will.
I mean, it doesn't even do HD.
Optimus Prime @ Oct 30th 2006 7:32PM
Donny; yes, it does... a lot of people, given the choices of GBA, PSP, and DS choose GBA.. the PSP and DS arent compelling offerings...they're not worth the money to them.
That doesnt mean its not compelling to you... it just the majority of people dont think its worth it.
If youre in the market for a console, you can choose between PS2, 360, and GC... you can choose whatever; most people are choosing PS2... despite being a 6 year old console, people find it more valuable (compelling) than the newxt gen. console.
Will @ Oct 30th 2006 7:39PM
BklynKid -
You obviously haven't played GT4 have you?
kodec @ Oct 30th 2006 7:40PM
"Should be interesting to see how well this little fellow sells next to all three next-gen consoles this holiday season."
Gee, that would be interesting, but it's not exactly plausible since a certain next-gen console that is only launching with 300k units won't technically be on shelves.
diskoboy @ Oct 30th 2006 7:49PM
Ummm, they announced the North American silver PS2 about 2-3 months ago. And the relase date was October 24th.
Did you guys do something to piss sony off to have them send you an incomplete press release, several months later than everyone else?
Neo Rasa @ Oct 30th 2006 7:53PM
Yeah these were announced a solid month ago and went on sale pretty much everywhere in North America on the twenty-fourth of October. Long wait compared to the Japaense release.
diskoboy @ Oct 30th 2006 7:54PM
Oh - my fault. Sony's late press release is on the official PlayStation website. Which makes it even more funny.
Josh @ Oct 30th 2006 7:55PM
They've been available on Gamestop.com/EBGames.com and maybe Amazon.com for a couple of weeks now, I think.
I really hate the silver color...I wish SCEA would just release a white PS2 over here! Then I'd actually buy my first PlayStation product!
Troy @ Oct 30th 2006 7:57PM
This is completely off subject, but does anyone know how to submit a story to joystiq to post? FYI, its about the Lik Sang phishing emails asking for your paypal password to paypal you $9.99 b/c of their recent closing, so if ya get those, just report it as spam. But..being a computer geek like me ya'll prolly all know about that by now.
sicsided @ Oct 30th 2006 8:17PM
i work at a target, and we've had for sale for up to 3 weeks now.
Freeman @ Oct 30th 2006 8:19PM
I saw a whole rack of these at Best Buy in my neighbourhood (North York, Toronto). And they were 120 CDN, which is less US (but not much).
Xuse @ Oct 30th 2006 8:23PM
Hey Optimus,
Can you please change the page on your word of the day calendar? Your usage of the word "compelling" simply isn't compelling anymore.
In addition, I think Sony has mistaken the market for raccoons. Shiny silver is tempting but my nest is pretty cluttered as is.
George @ Oct 30th 2006 8:30PM
This is good for low income families. Any kid would be happy to find one of these under there tree this Christmas. It is also much less expensive to buy an old system and have a huge catalog of good games to choose from. I am going to hold off buying a Wii for a year or two. That way I am guaranteed to have a big library of games to choose from for half the price. I hate paying full price for games. Especially with crap out there like Lego Star Wars 2 for the DS.
spoo @ Oct 30th 2006 8:33PM
I saw this yesterday @ Target when I was shopping with the old lady. It looks slick and pondered buying it since my TV and Cable box are silver.
mrgreen @ Oct 30th 2006 8:38PM
im so glad these are coming out, this means that the slimline black ps2 might drop to under 100 dollars used. then i can finnally justify buying one used...o rmaybe ill just buy a big one after the ps3 comes out... the things illl do to play guitar hero, (my freind got back from vacation a few days ago and took his ps2 back, im in GH remission...)
FuzzyPickles @ Oct 30th 2006 8:50PM
I want a PS2 so that I can play Dragon Quest VIII, Shadow of the Colossus... and... um... I guess that's about it. Enough to justify 130 bucks? Not if I can get a used older model cheaper, methinks.
FrenchPoodle @ Oct 30th 2006 9:40PM
I thought this was announced a while ago, cause Isaw it in the Circuit City circular
n8dogg @ Oct 30th 2006 9:45PM
Whoo, Fuzzy, you need to broaden your interests a bit.
There are other games even within the genres of the two titles you mentioned that are worth picking up and giving a shot.
Allen @ Oct 30th 2006 9:47PM
What good is the ethernet port if you can't play FFXI on a slimline PS2, silver or otherwise?
Robert @ Oct 30th 2006 10:08PM
GameStop has actually already been selling these for a few days now.
B1gC72 @ Oct 30th 2006 10:10PM
yea i say these in my local best buy last week. its kinda nice i guess but who doesnt already have like 3 PS2's? (obviously exagerating, just saying that people that want one probably have one by now)
scott @ Oct 30th 2006 10:40PM
I already have it. Came out last wednesday. Geez, Joystiq, get with it. You dissapoint me.
delerious @ Oct 30th 2006 10:51PM
I saw silver or white PS2s at Target yesterday afternoon, in Huntsville. It looked like a new shipment, none had been sold.
:p @ Oct 30th 2006 11:05PM
@Optimus Prime
Most of the time I think your just flaming just for the sake of flaming something, but I do have to agree with the fact that 360 is not that compelling. Heres to hoping they change that around, but unless there are a few more killer apps coming around that I don't know about I don't see that happening.
As for the Silver PS2 I don't think its going to help drive sales much but you never know.. it is shiny.
digitalFrequency @ Oct 30th 2006 11:42PM
to be honest, i'm thinking about getting one of these. i dunno about that press release, but i did spot a bunch of them at target last week.
my super old ps2 died and i've been living off bumming off other friends with ps2s. and quite frankly, i don't think the ps2 has kicked the can just yet. being the epitomy of the ideal audience for the games that have been coming out, such as xenosaga 3, valkyrie profile 2, okami, and soon to be final fantasy xii and guitar hero 2. i don't have the cash to front for a ps3, but i think i'll be very well content with the ps2 until i rake in enough cash for the ps3, hopefully after a price drop.
FireResurrected @ Oct 31st 2006 1:58AM
The EB I worked at have had several units for a while now...
Me @ Oct 31st 2006 3:04AM
BTW Joystiq, 111 million is how many have sold !
Harrison @ Oct 31st 2006 8:40AM
I live in Glendale az. and the target near my house already has wii endcaps and silver ps2's. I thought this article said sometime around thanksgiving.
Noel @ Oct 31st 2006 10:31AM
You would think they could also change the color of the buttons and joysticks. The silver and black combo looks kind of cheezy. Even just a switch to a dark gray or something would have been nice.
