Xbox 360 cooks a fine scambled egg
In case you didn't know, consumer electronics run hot at times, especially when overheating. Yes, hot enough to cook eggs. So after one failed attempt in cooling a red light blinking Xbox 360 with heat gun, a few blokes decided to try something different; make breakfast. I'm totally not playing my 360 anymore. I need a system that runs cool. After all, isn't that why we play games? Cool systems?
[Thanks, Ethan]

Joystiq you've just given the SDF their lunch with this post!
*splits before SDF arrives*

I am pretty sure the same thing would happen if I put an egg on the heat sink of my computer's cpu or gpu... This would be more interesting if they had a couple different consoles/computers lined up and did an egg cookoff time trial.
get over it @ Oct 31st 2006 10:48AM
i say put it back together and send it in to microsoft for repair... it'd be interesting to hear what the service tech had to say about finding burnt egg in the console when he opened it up.
big daddy woo woo III @ Oct 31st 2006 11:15AM
I have not ever seen the blinking red light on my system and I was one of those crazies that bought the system the day it came out. I know that M$ has stated that due to all the bugs in the first batch that they will replace the system free of charge. So I thought that I would wait until I have an issue and then send it in..... even if it is a year from now. Maybe I might get the newest upgrade..... nah they are not that smart.

That's quite an expensive frying pan.
vidGuy @ Oct 31st 2006 10:57AM
I'd be more impressed if the egg cooked on el jefe, the power brick.
Martin @ Oct 31st 2006 1:07PM
And another thing Sony left off of their fact sheet.
How much does Sony charge to let you cook an egg???
32_Footsteps @ Oct 31st 2006 11:16AM
Deadpool has me thinking - we should do the fried egg test on all power supplies. I'm fascinated to know how much we'd be cooking on each console.
That, and it'd give me an excuse to break out my Julia Child impersonation. "A little wine for the recipe, and a little wine for the Julia..."
Dave @ Oct 31st 2006 11:18AM
I still think MS should have included this from the start. The first games machine that can cook you breakfast
rdj75 @ Oct 31st 2006 11:18AM
It would have been really be funny if when he put the eggs on it the red lights of death went away and it was now working just fine with eggs.
epluribus @ Oct 31st 2006 11:24AM
Whatsamatter, Blake? You sure don't seem to be going after this with the same venom and vigor that you would if it was the Cell chip they were showing. Now why would that be...
Linkamus @ Oct 31st 2006 11:25AM
The Wii is pretty good at keeping sushi fresh.... yep... runs that cool bitches!
Chris @ Oct 31st 2006 11:31AM
Come on Joystiq what is this.
He is using the heatsink. of course it's going to be hot THAT'S THE POINT!!!!
why even post this? This is so retarded. Hot things are hot... bravo!
T-Man @ Oct 31st 2006 11:34AM
Interesting use of the Boondock Saints soundtrack. When I think of an overheating console i know the next thing to mind is holy vengeance.
Thryon @ Oct 31st 2006 11:36AM
Just for fun
Eggs will coagulate (cook) at around 63°C (or about 145°F for you Americans). But the process can start as low as 35°C (95°F). Knowing this we can now determine what else can cook an egg.
Hot pavement on a summer day (can hit 40°C)
Xbox 1 (max heat of 45°C)
Playstation 2 (max heat of 39°C)
Most home amplifiers (max heat of 45°C)
Average home computer (approx. 40-50°C)
Avearge Gamer's computer (approx. 50-80°C)
So you see, you can pretty much coagulate an egg on just about anything with direct heat. If you do not have a source of heat, then you can apply a voltage to the egg to increase its heat to acheive coagulation, and for you, you need nothing more than a cell phone. Cooking eggs is no longer an impressive acheivement.

its funny watching people get mad over a joke.

To big daddy woo woo III:
I think you need to check what you think "M$" [sic] said about replacing early consoles. They extended the warranty to one year (I believe from their standard 90 days) and provided refunds to those who had already paid for repairs, but that's it. If you've got a launch era console, your Microsoft extended warranty is going to be just about up, and you'll be paying for repairs after that if you have any issues.
JodyAnthony @ Oct 31st 2006 11:45AM
NovaCharged, maybe unlike the Sony fanboys, the ms fanboys either a)know a joke when they see it, or b)have better things to do than bitch and whine on the internet every time something with a slightly negative connotation is posted about their console of choice
hyperion @ Oct 31st 2006 11:54AM
ironically that is the 360's liquid cooling system that they are cooking the eggs on.
ill trooper @ Oct 31st 2006 12:31PM
Hmmm... Tastes like... hmmm... Capcom ZOMBIES!
Viridium, I still haven't received my $129 refund from Microsoft for the repair of my launch day 360... Any news on that whole thing?
Brian @ Oct 31st 2006 4:12PM
I feel like a dildo for even reading this.
syco @ Oct 31st 2006 4:31PM
Ah man, the screwed up a 360 to show that they are toasty... they're running 3 PPCs, of COURSE they run hot.
They could have given ME that 360. Then I too could play...

@17 "Cooking eggs is no longer an impressive (sic)acheivement."
Lol, are you serious, cokking eggs will always be an impressive achievement.
Also, to evrybody with the ZomGG!!11 s0 O1d!!1! attitude, chill, go read engadget if you like it so much and stop the trolling kthx.
I for one part can only read joystiq sporadically and don't have time to visit the great myriad of websites that cover gaming and tech so I DO welcome the job joystiq does. Such haters...
joe smith @ Oct 31st 2006 2:04PM
I like the idea of a service tech seeing an egg in there. Not sure that would be covered...
This was cute. One hopes they will do the same with the PS3 -- which draws about 100 watts more than the 360.
nfoo @ Oct 31st 2006 2:18PM
I'm still waiting for a press release by Sony, stating:
"On the PS3 you can fry a whole chicken, not only an egg."
gon @ Oct 31st 2006 2:37PM
ps3 grill
ZeroCorpse @ Oct 31st 2006 4:27PM
Sony: Oh yeah? Well the PS3 can cook an egg in 4D because of the superior Cell processor! 1080p! Let them eat cake! Get another job!
CYRiX @ Oct 31st 2006 7:03PM
welcome to heatsinks, they get hot.
beny @ Oct 31st 2006 5:21PM
LOL, PS3 runs even hotter, have to have AC on full blast to cool 30 ps3's
reppy @ Oct 31st 2006 7:32PM
That was gross. At least put down some foil so it's not cooking on the heat sink itself.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Nov 1st 2006 4:50AM
*Hyperion: "ironically that is the 360's liquid cooling system that they are cooking the eggs on."
No, he was using the GPU heatsink, which does not have heat pipes. The CPU has heat pipes.
What I find ironic is that people complain that these machines run hot because of the high-end graphics. In fact, the XBox360 graphics chip uses a fairly plain aluminum heatsink with the DVD drive covering it. It's the CPU (physics, AI, multitasking) that has that huge f***ing copper cooler with heat pipes and massive amounts of airflow.

I am so happy that this was put out over the internet. I have/had a first run Xbox 360 and had nothing but problems since I opened the box. I hope this opens Xbox 360 customers eyes, because if you do have a problem with your console, I hope you don't expect Xbox customer service to help you in any way other then lying to you and taking more of your hard earned money. My 360 had 3 flashing red lights after a few months of gaming. Xbox customer service told me I need to send it in for repairs at my cost! So, whoever put the comment saying that the first run consoles will be repaired for free by Xbox, you better guess again! I had to pay $140 for Xbox 360's mistakes; oh no I am sorry they gave me a 20% discount, $104 for my repair. The Xbox customer service actually told me over the phone that either you have to pay the charge or tough luck. So, I was forced to pay the charge to fix my already expensive frying pan! So, I get my "refurbished" console back, and it was cracked and not put back together correctly. So, I had to send that back and finally I got another “refurbished" console that as of yet hasn't caused me a problem...knock on wood. If you do experience any problems with your 360 I recommend turning it into a frying pan, if not you are just going to spend more money for something you can't control. After everything I have been through with Xbox 360 (oh! and there is plenty more that I don’t have in this brief message) they offered me one of the worst games out for Xbox 360…Kameo! I am very interested in finding more 360 consumers that have experienced problems like mine, so please contact me via email nivek4986@yahoo.com. I do not want anyone to go through what I have been though with Xbox!
