Presumably what you'll look like playing Zelda on Wii

Nintendo has posted four new Wii Experience videos shot at "special" locations featuring one American, two Japanese, and one French gamer having a go with Zelda: Twilight Princess. We've sent Joystiq's Fido (he's a Basset Hound) to sniff out said locations and crash the party, but in the meantime, these Nintendo sponsored marketing materials will have to do.

Yep, I'll certainly kill myself if I ever look like that.
teknotom @ Nov 1st 2006 1:59PM
That would be one FRENCH gamer. Do all Europeans look the same to you or something? Seriously, though, this looks cool. I must admit i've had a hard time envisioning how it would be playing certain Wii games, Zelda being one of them, but it looks like a really good control system.
Mullinator @ Nov 1st 2006 2:01PM
My face will probably look something like that, however I will be more wide eyed and excited since, after all, it's the new Zelda game i'm playing here. I will also be surrounded by various junk foods and the room will be pitch black to ensure the screen is the only piece of visual information my brain is receiving.
I may also have a meditation session before playing to get myself properly psyched and "in the zone".
Jordan @ Nov 1st 2006 2:02PM
ppl in my family and others make fun of them playing video games enough as it is... you will be surprised however as to how many ppl in your family will want to try to use this controller... i couldn't care less as to how i look, look at ppl playing DDR or Guitar Hero, people are going to love this that much more, and for me, ZELDA is the shiz
JUJUSTSHUTUP @ Nov 1st 2006 2:03PM
that looks re fucken tartedddddd
gameclu @ Nov 1st 2006 2:03PM
I showed my dad, who is in his 50s, these videos a couple of nights ago. He bookmarked them because he thought they were fun to watch. He also came to his own conclusion that the wiimote will open video gaming up to a much larger market.
ejflex @ Nov 1st 2006 2:06PM
The whole swing the wiimote/swing the sword thing is cool and all, but Nintendo def should have included an option to go to the original control scheme.
reguy @ Nov 1st 2006 2:09PM
why does nintendo think i want to make a slash move every time i fight an enemy? that would be fun for about 4 seconds or until the 10th monster whichever comes first.
imagine if we had to play god of war that way, we would all be dead.
epobirs @ Nov 1st 2006 2:10PM
It looks like a teledildonics demo.
Miharu @ Nov 1st 2006 2:16PM
Hah that was great, but I'm also a bit doubtful as to how long people can swing their hands until they get tired and just want to finish the game with a regular controller... I'll buy it at launch, and we'll see then.
noizbot @ Nov 1st 2006 2:17PM
Hehe... it remains mildly amusing for me to listen to dorks that play videogame calling other dorks playing video games retarded. Yes, because we all look so cool holding controllers. And for the "do all Europeans look the same" winner, well, that's in the USA section for what it's worth. Not that I can be too surprised with the type of posts that happen here, with articles such as this pandering to that sort of "people".
Anyway, the Wii is yet unproven, much in the same way the DS was unproven for almost a year. I'm preordering because I strongly believe that the system will be huge -- meaning a huge variety of content -- although the usual staple of Nintendo franchises would likely make it a must-buy for me, regardless. Zelda for the Wii all the way, and I even have -two- GCs.
sanchez @ Nov 1st 2006 2:18PM
Wiitarded... OMFG!
@ Nov 1st 2006 2:24PM
Wernte these the same type of 'expereince' type ads they used to promote Power Glove?... to show you how involved you would be in the game. That went well.
is @ Nov 1st 2006 2:26PM
In every piece of footage Ive seen of people playing Wii, they seem to be having a great time. Makes me want mine sooner! I also really believe that my girlfriend and her freinds will be intrigued by the motion control. She herself gave up on LoZ:OoT, becuase she couldnt get to grips with the control system. I can see her being more tenacious with this method, which looks way more rewarding and, of course, intuitive.
Nintendo really are on to something with this one.
krizage @ Nov 1st 2006 2:26PM
Is it me or does it look like there is a delay (significant delay) between the motion and the actual action that said action should illicit in the on screen character. It looks like the entire gesture must be complete before the animation begins... so your on screen swing begins the moment your actual swing ends. Will that work? If there is any timing necessary for the game... that could get pretty aggravating. I would love to see this thing work… but you have to give the machine enough input to understand what you are doing. How could they overcome this problem?
teknotom @ Nov 1st 2006 2:30PM
I was joking with the all Europeans comment. I'm from England.
Chessasaur @ Nov 1st 2006 2:31PM
Does the nunchuk (sp?) have motion sensing too? I saw the first guy moving it sideways a couple of times.
Sloan Ranger @ Nov 1st 2006 2:37PM
Oh boy, > strikes again. I don't think anyone has brought up the power glove as many times as you. It's actually impressive. You ROCK!
Reguy, I don't think you have to deliver roundhouse-sized swipes for the wiimote to register a sword swing. But it's great for emphasis every now and then. I'll let you know on the 19th, not that you really care of course.
James @ Nov 1st 2006 2:38PM
Well i take it you must be one of the many fat obese gamers out there reguy.
Nah just joking, i doubt you have to make motions as big as that plus a lot of the time you can just run past enemys in LoZ games, so I imagine it shouldn't be that much trouble.
Shad Genki @ Nov 1st 2006 2:38PM
I noticed the delay too. Not significant, but a fraction of a second does make a difference.
John Chamard @ Nov 1st 2006 2:40PM
I too will have a silly grin on my face. Zelda looks amazing.
benjamin @ Nov 1st 2006 2:41PM
"Presumably what you'll look like playing Zelda on Wii"
A douche?
What? No, I'm not bitter that the Gamecube version of Zelda was delayed only to cater to coming out for the Wii. Not at all.
mykie @ Nov 1st 2006 2:41PM
Looks like a person having fun playing the Wii, what's the big deal?
I guess he could be slack-jawed, glossy-eyed, gazing emotionless like a zombie at a TV while tapping buttons on a controller repeatedly.
Bonanza Bill @ Nov 1st 2006 2:48PM
@Chessasaur
Yes, the nunchuk has motion-sensing. Moving it sideways like that makes Link do the spin-attack.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 1st 2006 2:49PM
Whoa, what's up with the Thai ladyboy in that second video?
shase @ Nov 1st 2006 2:50PM
why do people keep mentioning zelda on wii when they can get it for GC just as easy and doesnt need to shell out 250+? like saying i want to get a 360 because of Madden.
nzdsgirl @ Nov 1st 2006 3:00PM
Hey, why didn't they put any girls in those Zelda vids? Why only young men? That's not cool, you said your console was for everyone Nintendo! I really would've liked to see a girl playing.
@ Nov 1st 2006 3:02PM
"Oh boy, > strikes again. I don't think anyone has brought up the power glove as many times as you. It's actually impressive. You ROCK!"
I never knew i had a following. Anyways, if you choose to ignore history then that is your problem. Ignorance is bliss after all.
To those that remember Nintendo pitching similar ideas as the end all in the past; they may be a bit more cautious.
Uh_Oh @ Nov 1st 2006 3:10PM
Wow they all look retarded how embarassing :(.
John Lucas @ Nov 1st 2006 3:12PM
Looks on point to me.
But I expect nothing less from the Kings of Gaming.
Decade after decade never letting me down.
18 days...
...just 18 days.
Just gotta hold out for 18 more days...

Speaking of Wii experience vids though I love all of them I have to say this is one of my favorites.
Just listen to her discover how easy & natural it is to play it. Then listen to her light up & shrieking with glee.
This first video with this other one I'm linking under it is what I like to call "The Sugoi Girls".
Hell, I'll throw in the Asian-American girl too even if she DOESN'T say "Sugoi". "Oh my Gosh!" is good enough.

To those that remember, Nintendo had little to do with the Power Glove, as it was produced and sold by Milton Bradley, a company that was notorious for their horrible games for NES, aside from Abadox.
mykie @ Nov 1st 2006 3:28PM
err, Power Glove was MATTEL, not Milton Bradley...
Mattel didn't make ONE good game for NES, let alone the Power Glove...
Dominic @ Nov 1st 2006 3:47PM
It looks like a ton of fun! Definitely a nice escape from just pushing buttons. I am definitely leaning towards getting one now.
Shagi @ Nov 1st 2006 4:00PM
I want to see the videos that didn't make the ad campaign. I'm sure theres a lot of chips trying in vain to play with their Wiis. Speaking of chimps thats all these videos are essentially, they give a chimp 5 minutes with the Wii and then show you the best parts.
Even when I'm fixing my car (something thats not fun at all) I still will smile or chear when a part that was stuck comes loose. These people are just chearing beacuse they managed to do something they weren't sure they could do. Play it for longer than 5 minutes and watch how fast those smiles turn to dour dissapointed game faces.

It seems that the action is stuttering on the screen like it's having trouble keeping up with the fast hand movements that's being translated into various moves for Link. Anyone else see that?

Sure pal.
Hey, I think I hear a giant crab that needs to take some massive damage. Take care of that for me, will ya?
Meanwhile, I'll be playing Zelda.
Invader Alex @ Nov 1st 2006 4:37PM
yes seeing someone in that view looks stupid. How about looking at someone playing a regual game from that view?
yeah they look stupid.
This is really to show a person reaction to game that they are playing...
jabbertrack @ Nov 1st 2006 4:38PM
Give me a camera, some models, and Ikea furniture and I could make pulling weeds seem fun with enough footage to pull from.
TheKingInYellow @ Nov 1st 2006 4:51PM
I have yet to see a video or pictures of someone use the Wiimote where they are not smiling. Nintendo's site, or anywhere else.
This speaks VOLUMES to me.
jabbertrack @ Nov 1st 2006 4:57PM
"43. I have yet to see a video or pictures of someone use the Wiimote where they are not smiling. Nintendo's site, or anywhere else.

marketing pwns you doesn't it
try other websites, like 1up or something... or some videos from E3 where people have odd smiles while they shake the controller thinking it's not obeying them
or maybe you're only seeing what you want to see
TheKingInYellow @ Nov 1st 2006 5:04PM
Or perhaps the first few minutes take some getting used to, since the experience is entirely foreign to people?
Nah, that couldn't be it.
Pete C @ Nov 1st 2006 5:16PM
What?? You mean I'm not going to be squeezed on the couch with my hip, multi-cultural male buddies and funky-cool girl gamer friend playfully pushing and shoving each other around whilst laughing and reacting to the on-screen action?

This is footage from the AARP event earlier this week (Or was it last week already?). No paid models faking glee etc. in an IKEA-furnitured living room - just someone who probably never played a video game before having _fun_ (see his smile?). That says much much more about the power of the Wii than any ads produced by Nintendo imo.

Trev @ Nov 1st 2006 6:33PM
i would just like to note that the controls did not look very responsive at all. the guys slashes the controller, and 1/2 a second later, link attacks. wtf!?
mor @ Nov 1st 2006 6:43PM
Looks pretty good
oh by the way if any one wants to know where they can steal a wii from, target already has many stocked, i saw them when a bunch of cardboard displays fell down behind the locked glass videogame doors.
Jonn @ Nov 1st 2006 7:45PM
Their eyes look dead.
No, seriously.
Nicholas Sulikowski @ Nov 1st 2006 7:56PM
The Power Glove couldn't even do half of what the Wiimote does. The Power Glove could only sense roll, and the buttons were placed on top of the glove in a relatively inaccessible place. The Wiimote on the other hand has all the buttons nicely placed, and it can sense motion in three dimensions instead of one, and can be used as a pointing device.
