Yeah, I just bought a brand new 360 hooked it up, started up good, then got prompt for an update, after that the system just died with error message to call customer support. Called them up and said I would have to ship it in. So I decided to just refund it back to the store. I believe it's the new update thing that caused it. I had a few glitches and errors on my older 360, but that's working fine....what it did was bombed the brand new one useless. Error code was E 71....

Continuing from post above...I wonder if it will have any issues if I DON'T update my system, (after buying it brand new) just not hook it up to the internet. I assume it'll work, because before the new system was bricked I was able to get to the dashboard. The only drawback is no Xbox live for a while...hopefully not ever. What do you guys think...I don't want to plunk down another $300 just to find out....

I'm currently on my 2nd Xbox 360. But, about 3 weeks ago I started to get the 3 red lights and since it was a 2005 model, they "fixed" it for free. I say "fixed" because I don't know if they did or not since I received it back yesterday afternoon, plug it in, did the dashboard update, and then got the Black Screen of Death with E71 on it. So I called customer service and they want me to ship it back to them (another 3 more weeks before I can play it again). But this time they wanted me to pay for shipping. I asked to speak to a supervisor and now they are paying for shipping.

I love the Xbox 360, but it is VERY upsetting to have all of these problems with it. I really wish they would test things out before shipping them to the public and make sure that they don't create $400 paper weights.

You know, I swear that the number people who actually have bricked 360s is disproportional to the number of people who read Xbox blogs.

We've started a one-up-manship war! Whose 360 bricked the worst?

...

The dashboard update is a witch!!

They have fixed the update so it should nto freeze you now. Mine had never frozen or had an issue other than normal every day crap. I guess i got use to minor annoyances during my old Disc Read Error days with the PS.

The fix does not fixed already bricked machines, it just fixes the ones that it messed up but not bricked or stops boxes that havn't been updated as of yet from getting bricked. As far as I can tell if your xbox360 is bricked, you have to send it in to get it fixed.

IMHO they should TEST things before they release them....BRILLANT!

I currently do not own a 360, but was seriously considering purchasing one soon. BUT...now that I read all these reports of bricked systems, I'm starting to second guess that idea. I don't want to brick a brand new system (which I've read has happened so far).

What do you guys think? Is it worth the risk to buy a new system now with all these problems out there?

All what problems? they just fixed them all, if you havetn already bricked it, you arent going to, and since you havent bought one yet, you're fine.

Go for it, awesome system, I've never had any issues at all, and maybe 2 people I know personally ever have, (out of a ton of gamers).

@roundabout

like someone said earlier...you are reading about the people who have suffered. 6 million 360's have been sold. you do the math, but yes it very uch worth the risk. if anything, since you are just buying one you can return it to whomever you purchase it from as defective and just get another one.

Yes it is worth the risk, what other machine would you get? WII? Hardware similar to the gamecube, or the PSIII with no games anyone wants to play? Why not take the chance just for GOW, COD3 and of course Rainbow Six?

This update does not fix the problem for those who are unable to completely download the update in the first place. There is a ton of us on the xbox.com forums who are stuck in the "Update Failed" loop, rendering our xbox useless unless we have a memory to transfer our profile to. Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon.

The fix still does not solve the endless update/fail loop problem. So in reality, MS hasn't done anything. There is a lot of confusion all over blogs about what the problem is. Over on the xbox.com forums there is a 200+ post thread concerning people who simply cannot even download the update.

see: http://forums.xbox.com/7750426/ShowPost.aspx

MS has refused to fix this problem and they are just passing everyone off with, "wait a few hours." The "bricking" issue is obviously a problem, but all of these other sites are missing the point: many people can't download and update their xboxes at all, thus cannot play games unless the harddrive is removed, thus cannot save games, not to mention that none of us can get online for all these new XBLA games that you guys keep reporting on.

"Why not take the chance just for GOW, COD3 and of course Rainbow Six?"

I got all 3 preordered. I'm on my second 360, my launch core died in August. I bought a Platinum August 7th and called Microsoft last night to get the 2 year service contract. They said my 3 month (90 day) warranty is already up. Umm, how? After being on the phone for 45 minutes and waiting for the rep to get a supervisor involved my cell phone dropped the call. Called back and got someone else. Same deal, he said the previous person failed to put notes under my serial# so we had to start over. Once again on hold for a supervisor, dropped call. I realize Microsoft is not responsible for my horrible cell service. Just annoying that I'm trying to give them more money and they won't accept it. I bought my second system 8.7.06 and they said the factory warranty expired on 10.13.06. How does that make sense?

How come some people keep having problems with their console dying multiple times? I know alot of people with the system and never knew anyone have any problems. Either these people arent taking care of their system or they have really bad luck. Or the people in these blogs are really sony or nintendo fans and are lying to give the system bad publicity.

People with bricked consoles are a tiny but vocal minority. It's understandable as their shiny sparkly console just died and I'd be pissed off enough to shout about it too, but still a tiny minority.

Also, be assured that Microsoft are doing things and not just "waiting a few hours". That means they're doing something in that few hours and not just sitting around sipping lattes.

And they do test these things, it's insane to think they wouldn't. However there's always a large variation in hardware, and things slip through the net. In this case it's a pretty big blunder, and I'll agree that even though they're trying to patch essentially the same hardware each time they are cocking it up pretty badly by knocking out machines.

Exactly why I'm concerned at buying a new system at this moment. If I understand him correctly, he bought a new system the day the fall update became available, and it's bricked his system already. He has already returned it, and received a new one. I would be hesitant to try the update again.

Well,
Just got off the phone with Xbox Support. Went through the whole schpeel. Bottom line, My 360 is McAllen, Texas bound for "repair" and I'm exactly $139.90 poorer over a problem that isn't even my fault.

Even though I'm frustrated and have absolutely no confidence my problems are solved, I found it quite amusing that in the background of the call, I could hear all the other agents on calls with the exact same problem I have! You could hear:

"okay sir, now how many lights are red?"
"okay sir, at what point does it freeze?"

Unbelievable. Yet I still had to pay. For some strange reason, I have a feeling that I'll get those repair costs refunded.

It bricked just out of the first 90 days.
I sent it into M$, they sent me another
refurbished 360. Manufacture date 1/3/06.
This new update bricked my 360 now they say
they won't fix it because the manufacure date
is after 12/31/06. Needless to say I am
not happy. They want $135.00 plus shipping
to fix it.
